Moto G 2nd Gen Sim unlock - Moto G 2014 LTE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm sorry if this is a bit redundant, I've tried looking for answers online but I keep getting mixed results, there's alot of terms that the word "unlock" goes with and I just can't seem to find a straight forward answer.
Can the Moto G 2nd Gen be sim unlocked in the sense that a samsung s4 or a galaxy ace can be? When I unlocked those other phones, all I had to do was root it and use some app or import a file on an sd card which unlocked the phone for me or provided me with an unlock code to use.
Can the Moto G 2nd gen be unlocked without actually buying a unlock code from a provider?
-Thanks

There's no way mate, you have to get an unlock code. Motorola actually put write protection where normally there is not so, pretty much that's your only option

[Q] Unlocking AT&T Moto X

Hi there!
I'm having hard days trying to unlock my Moto X by AT&T. I've got the phone almost a month ago and the problem is that I can't get the unlock code from any service, they just can't find it.
I made a few calls to AT&T and as I understood operators can't give unlock codes anymore. They asked me to go to att.com/deviceunlock to fill the unlock request form.
The form includes field called "Wireless number" and since I live in Russia I cannot provide any US number.
Is there a kind person who could get the code for me, filling the form with his wireless number (I can pay for that)?
Or maybe anyone knows another way to unlock the device?
Thanks a lot!

T-Mobile X bootloader unlock

Got my XT1053 today, which is supposed to be bootloader unlockable. But when I tried, it says not eligible. Anybody know how long it takes Motorola to update its system? I feel like I've seen other similar posts and I'm just trying to gauge how long I should elect to wait before I can unlock. Thanks.

I'm sure it's not the answer you are looking for but when I logged on to get my unlock code after two weeks it was there. I'm sure it was there sooner but I never checked until right after I heard the news that lenovo was buying motorola. Soooooooooo, you should have it in less than two weeks anyway.........

not sure what your talking about because if you want to unlock your bootloader you need to do here
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/87215/action/auth
scroll down till you see Moto X US / Sprint, USC, TMO then click on unlock and follow the directions

I'm saying when I enter my unlock code at that site, it tells me my device is ineligible, even though the T-Mobile X is most certainly bootloader unlockable. I read other people experienced the same thing and then it worked a few days later.

That is interesting for sure i guess i would give it a couple days and try again.
if you dont won't to wait to root you can use the root for locked bootloaders you will just have to wait till you unlock to install a custom recovery.
I got the same problem. T-mobile Moto X purchased while the Cyber Monday.
I tried to unlock the bootloader. And the system says that "Your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking.":crying:
When you get the string of numbers and letters while in Fastboot copy and paste them to notepad and remove all spaces then copy and paste it to the Moto site where it asks for your unique code. Hope this helps! I had the same issue and this worked.

After reading the initial post I decided to get my unlock code just to keep it handy as well. Much to my surprise, I too am see a message indicating that my device is not eligible. I have the GSM Unlock MotoX that I bought around January 6th. Lets hope that this is just a temporary situation.
Just got an unlock code! A couple hours ago it said "Your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking". So try!
P.S. I bought Moto X GSM Unlocked T-Mobile 32GB two weeks ago.
Update: got my unlock code on Sunday night. So took ~2 days from receipt of phone to being unlockable.

Ok just tried again a few moments ago and it worked this time around.

[Q] Unlock bootloader of AT&T Moto X 2nd Gen

I'm looking to unlock and root an AT&T Moto X 2nd gen that I just received. The first required step seems to be unlocking the bootloader. I followed the instructions on Motorola's website on how to do this: it was there I received the news that Motorola will not help you unlock the bootloader of your Moto X 2nd Gen from AT&T.
It seems that a couple of other people on that thread asked Motorola if there was any other way to unlock the device, and , predictably, they didn't get any response from Moto.
I then searched around for any methods of unlocking the bootloader for this device that don't involve Motorola and I haven't found any. Has anyone found a way around this?
Oddly enough I was once employed as a software developer at Motorola and this X is my first phone that I've used from them since I worked there. .... Thanks!
Nope.
You should send it back and get a pure edition
Thanks

Thanks. Disappointing news but I should have probably figured as much. I suppose I'd rather at spend money with companies who don't do such things...

Most phones that are carrier branded are unable to unlock the boot loader. My G3 on T-Mobile shipped with an unlocked boot loader, but other versions were locked and there was no way to unlock them. There is this "bump" work around, but it's nothing official from LG.
Point is, don't blame moto because it's the carriers that require the lock to stay permanent.

Can't unlock XT1900-1's bootloader

I'm trying to unlock the bootloader of my X4 from Best Buy. I've enabled the OEM unlock option in dev options but the Moto unlock site says the device is not available for bootloader unlocking. It's on OPW28.2. I've tried turning the option off and on but it doesn't work. I'd love to finally get root on this
if Moto site is not giving you the code then you are out of luck. I would return to Best Buy and get a replacement, or contact Moto support.

Thanks for the advice, I just tried the Moto website again and it said I can unlock it now. Somehow turning the option off and on and waiting a few hours made it work lol, hope that can help anyone else experiencing my former problem

turning the option on and off has nothing to do with the site generating the code or not.

I work in cell phone repairs and get asked quite a lot about this. It used to be that the lock was on the phone but now it's on the carriers server so it's pretty hard to bypass.
