Cellular strength and throughput - HTC 10 Real Life Review

We know how much you like to stream, ahem, "videos", and so cellular data is mega-important. Rate this thread to express how you think the HTC 10's LTE performs. A higher rating indicates that it's fantastic: throughput is excellent and signal strength is top-notch.

While data connectivity appears to be quite solid on this device, for someone with a lot of knowledge in how RF performance works, I can say this device could use some optimizations. I am seeing dBm readings on both AT&T/T-Mobile bands to be 3 to 5 dBm weaker in signal throughput vs the Galaxy S7 (carrier versions). This means at the edge of signal, the device is much more likely to drop off than to hang onto a fringe signal.

Will retest at home but the same sim in my old phone at home on my previous phone, nexus 6P could get up to around 150mb down stream and over 45mb upstream.. Insane speeds for 4G..i haven't tested this as of yet but will do once I'm in the house, just having a pint

Signal quality is a step down when inside compared to previous phones I've owned. This phone has a hard time holding on to weak signal, especially when inside. My Note 5 and Turbo 2 did not have problems like the HTC 10 has.

Here's my thread with my results. Very little if not no difference to my Nexus 6p.

The metal chassis of this phone will impact performance however in the 4g tests, no difference, I've never had a lost call either. All very good so far.

WiFi strength, range, and throughput

Rate this thread to express how you think the LG Nexus 5X's Wifi performs. A higher rating indicates that it has excellent range, throughput, and signal strength. Like when you're taking a dump in the bedroom upstairs, do your videos have to buffer or do they come through without interruption?

Again, plastic case, this means that your signals will be good. No metals in the way.
Before my N5x is had an iPhone 5c.
Also plastic, but there is a big difference in signal strength. N5X has much better range.
Sidenote:
My tp-link 5GHz router will crash once in a while only the 5GHz band does this.
This started since I use the N5x
I owned the Nexus 5x for 7 hours now.
And I'm deeply disappointed in the WiFi part - constantly getting maximum 50 kb/s wherever i go. No matter which wifi network, no matter which band im using, and no matter which signal strength.
Probably a failure of something hardware-wise, as i tried reflashing the firmware.
:/
My Wi-Fi is great. Just ran Speed Test and got 30Mbps download.
Does anyone else have the problem of WiFi randomly droping? I have had this issue since I received the phone. The problem has also been consistant through different ROMs. I was using Stock, Cataclysm, BlissPop and Pure Nexus which is my current ROM.
Very satisfied about the WiFi speed at home, this the highest speed so far:
D: 94.11 Mbps
U: 96.02 Mbps
This is on 5Ghz with the router one floor above me, nearly got the full speed of my ISP (100Mb fiber)

What kind/model wifi router are you using? What are the ping speeds on your speed test?
Mine gets choppy speeds and they drop and pick up even during the test. I did multiple network resets and a full phone reset, but still the same! My home network is solid getting 90+mbps DL with 17ms ping on my S6 and Xperia Z5.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using XDA-Developers mobile app
I've got a Draytek Vigor2132 viber model modem that can only run 2.4Ghz, as a extension for the upper floor I've got a Tenda N60 with AdvancedTomato firmware running 5Ghz.
I'm getting a average ping of 15, on my PC this is lower. Maybe you got some kind of interference from a other network, you can use the app Wifi Analyser to see of you router/modem runs the optimal channel for your situation. If you neightbours are using the same channel as you signal quality will drop.

what about signal strength in good areas written in dbm/asu?
wifi functionality appears not so great (at least when compared to the Galaxy Note 3 which might be an all-time top of its class, not sure)
cellular strength looks, like it's okay but not super-great
For me, cellular strength is pretty good. But I cant really compare it with my friends's phones since we all are using different providers.
but I would say that the lte is pretty good, but not that superior.
Wifi is pretty good but also not very strong or superior.
Since z5 came out for about 2 years ago, I would say that the device is just not as good as devices that just come out.
Bur im pretty satisfied with my device

Cellular strength and throughput

Unfortunately, the signal strength is really poor for me
Good signal for me, Lte slows down to less than 2Mbps down while my s7 is doing 34Mbps avg. Im on at&t.
Not enjoying the quality I'm getting, even at home. 2 bars average, and this is in the Dallas area.
Worse than my Note 3, so I don't blame AT&T.
Glad to know I'm not the only one with speed issues. I was thinking there was something wrong with my phone.
I have issues indoors at my job but my Note 7 was the same way too at my job
A lot better than my Note 7. I tested this morning because I am finally getting around to setting up the phone the way I like. It tested at 80/16 which the Note 7 would only speed test at 23/12. This was at home.
Saw a report that the S7/Edge got an update to support 4x4 MIMO and 256QAM down and 64QAM up
Also supposedly the V20 supports this but hasn't been turned on for us (seriously WTF)
http://www.androidpolice.com/2016/1...-mimo-256qam-technologies-faster-data-speeds/
From I what I have read on Reddit from posts by Qualcomm engineers, the LG v20 does not support mimo. It lacks the additional anttenas for mimo, though it does support 256 QAM. I was tempted to get the s7 edge, but AT&T doesn't support MiMo or have any plans of implementing it in the near future.
I'm always at 1 or 2 bars. I often get "no service"
Most of the time I get 0 bars with an X, or full bars with 4G but no LTE, where i used to get LTE with my previous phone, I think this phone has a weak antenna
I need some kind of hardware mod. Anyone know where is the antenna in the phone?

I have the opposite experience, I get better service with this phone. Maybe yours is defective.

I'm with the 1-2 bar group. My Nexus 5x and Samsung S8 are guaranteed to have 2 more bars than my V20, no matter where I go. I also get the spinning circle near the signal meter indicating it's searching. I've downloaded several apps to confirm my suspicion that this phone's antenna(s) suck. I like the phone, but signal is important when it affects your ability to communicate, not to mention drain on battery.
I think a phone of this size shouldn't be any of bad reception, especially with so many metal contacts within its cover, which must act as antenna.
i have really bad / unreliable reception.
i rooted the phone.
might it be a firmware problem? could i flash it? i believe the firmware that was linked in the instructions was for canada... i'm in europe germany
right now i've got the Alpha Omega ROM installed.
Purchased an AT&T version of the v20 off Ebay h910. What I have learned is the antennas are in the polycarbonate end-caps. GPS would not work for me at all on a clear day outside. Found a thread on the Internet that identified the problem, some replacement end caps do not have the antenna contacts in them. Google "becareful_buying_the_top_plastic_bezel_of_the_v20" for the thread on the fix. I found an additional thread on fixing the call reception but it did not work for me, search "v20-signal-issues". Hope this helps as I spent hours and hours trying things until I found the gps fix. The GPS is in the top end cap confirmed, the 3g is supposedly the 3rd contact in the bottom end cap but can't confirm.
I still have yet to identify my horrible signal strength. The antenna connectors on mainboard were just there with no plugs. Imma check tomorrow if my phone has this stuff in top and bottom caps.

Ya for me too. I have an h910 with dirty santa US996 Super V20 ROM. I don't live in the US so I don't get proper network with Optus here in Australia.

Why anyone would use a phone intended to be used in the US in another country doesn't make sense

I stream WSBK, MotoGP and BSB all the time on mine and it works perfect. It has no trouble with 1080p streams at all. I have an AT&T sim in mine.
Best cellular strength of any phones I've handled
Loss of Verizon connection
Both of my U11's stopped connecting with Verizon this morning.
Third phone is fine, so not a signal issue here.
Both with TWRP recovery installed and running OK for weeks.
Have had none of the problems some users report, til today.
Did a RUU on one of them and signal was restored.

TWRP doesn't affect signal at all. It was something else that was fixed by factory flashing the U11. The radios don't check safetynet so it's not that either.
I would say it was something they both had installed or a setting of some kind.

Nothing was different other than the day of the week. They've both connected perfectly - no issues -
for weeks. Didn't even take Play Store updates in last few days. Something changed at Verizon's end.
In my frigo warehouse, in one particular corner where I had 0 signal with HTC 10, now I have signal and can even phone normally. Very good!
My U11 lost signal in CHOC, my wife has my OnePlus 3T and she had usable signal in the ER. I was very disappointed because one of the selling features in the U11 as North American band support. I already looking to going back to OnePlus 5 or something because signal is dismal for me.
NFC - no option for NFC, but I figured for some out there it'll be important.
It's very important to me as I use it to read a blood glucose meter (Freestyle Libre) and it's been absolutely flawless. My phone lives in a spigen rugged armour case, and it has no issues communicating through multiple layers.
Would of been an absolute deal breaker and forced me to find another phone if the NFC didn't work well. Others out there's including glorious Samsung users have complained about NFC performance.
So if you're reading HTC don't mess up the NFC in future iterations and kudos for getting this right.

WiFi strength, range, and throughput

Previous phone being the LG V20(T-Mobile) and current pixel backup device. Both seemed to pickup WiFi throughout my home very well. Using the note 8, however, is not a great experience. WiFi reception is horrid as I can walk out my front door and lose reception. Other phone models could go another 30-40 feet before disconnecting due to signal strength. And that is with using 5GHz band. 2.4GHz band is not better, IMO.

I can confirm coming from LGV20 that the Note 8 wifi leaves alot to be desired. Its very dismal, at home I running a Nitehawk so range isnt a issue. However at work, I noticed in my favorite stall the wifi is lacking where as the LG had zero issues what so ever. Hopefully an update can remedy this. I ran a battery of speedtest in 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz from various points in my home with the LG.
