I'm currently rooted with 4.4 using the slapmymoto method. I'm ready to void my warranty by unlocking my bootloader via Motorola. Is it recommended to unlock the bootloader the way the phone is set up now, or should I go back to factory 4.4 and then unlock the bootloader? I'm just trying to make sure I don't brick my phone.

Doesn't matter how you do it. It will work fine.
Just know that unlocking the bootloader will WIPE YOUR DATA. That means everything that was stored on your SD card is not gone.

Doesnt slap my moto remove the recovery? So if I unlock the boot loader will it not ve able to wipe and factory reset?

Humm.... Not really sure. I thought it loaded a modified version of the stock recovery, but with write protection disabled. If this is the case, then it will still wipe your data.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge chimes in. I have not used slapmymoto since I unlocked my bootloader.
SlapMyMoto 1.0 does not touch the recovery. Your recovery is completely stock. MotoWPNoMo disables write protection for the system. I unlocked my bootloader while rooted via SlapMyMoto and retained root so I did not have to flash a custom recovery to gain root. However, there is nothing wrong with playing it safe and flashing back to stock and then you unlocking your bootloader.

You can if you want to play it safe, but if you are already rooted with SlapMyMoto then you really don't have to. The only issues you may run into is if you modified the system and there is an ota update.

If you're rooted you can use ADB instead. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to do it, and I know it may be a little hard to use install recovery on a locked BL.
You can ask for help here but that's not our forum, it's the S4 Active. Hope that helps.

If you're on rooted 4.4.2...that means write protection is enabled. So won't whatever you flash get undone on a reboot or power off?

If you have a locked bootloader, and are on 4.4.2, as @kj2112 brings up, write protection would have been re-enabled when you took the 4.4.2 OTA, so any "system" changes you make will be lost at power off/on.
Next, having a locked bootloader, you'll kind of stuck. You can't flash/install anything that isn't digitally signed by Moto. You can side load APK's, but that is about it.

im on the pure edition.
You have to go to settings > developer options > oem unlocking. Turn that on. Then you can do the normal process to unlock the bootloader.

Flash twrp recovery,then choose reboot to system. Before rebooting, it should offer to root your phone if your phone is not rooted. That should work.

If you're unlocked, flash TWRP and do whatever you'd like to do. Flash the latest SuperSU ZIP or install CM. That's the benefit of an unlocked bootloader...

No, you can't. If you are on 5.1 with a locked bootloader, kingroot, mofo, nor sunshine work. There is no way for you to root, flash custom roms, nor unlock your bootloader.
Mofo, kingroot, and sunshine only work for 4.4.4 or 5.0.
You are currently stuck, sorry.

False, with the bootloader locked, it does not allow you to downgrade to 5.0 nor 4.4.4. The only thing it let's you do is flash the same 5.1 image, it prevents going back to old versions unless you have an unlocked bootloader.
So no unlocked bootloader = no downgrade, no root, no mofo, no sunshine. There is no way to do it currently.

So im waiting for the first thing's first-----a way to root 5.1 on XT1096.

Idk, i've been using mofo with my xt1096 even after i updated to 5.1 although i was originally on 5.0 when i first started using it. i thought it was possible. first, just check with mofoverify to see if mofo will work. if it does, then buy mofo and flash the rooted 5.1 mofo image and then use sunshine.

The problem is that they have the 5.1 bootloader which prevents mofo from working. You are using 5.1 system and kernel on a 5.0 bootloader which is why mofo works for you. They can't downgrade the bootloader... Which means no mofo.

I think someone should report if they have actually tried downgrading to 5.0 from 5.1 ota and keeping the 60.16 bootloader. Can someone more knowledgeable chime in and stop me before I try this? It seems like the most that would happen is a bootloop, which can be fixed by flashing the 5.1 ota files via Motorola device manager.. Just do not flash motoboot.bin or gpt.bin just edit the batch file and remove those two lines. Someone try and see if we can indeed use that as a path to bl unlock.
It won't bootloop. It just straight up will fail to flash saying that you can't downgrade. You can only downgrade after you have an unlocked bootloader.

No. The pure edition does not use nor support CDMA. It won't be able to work at all with verizon's network.

What version of android do you have? Is your bootloader unlocked? Are you rooted?

I have 5.1, it's not rooted or unlocked. It is a verizon device but no simlock, i'm using it in vodafone, it works in all gsm bands including 4g.
I really like it and I want the 6.0 update if ever possible .

Alright, currently it is impossible to root or unlock the bootloader on the xt1096 running 5.1... Which means it is impossible to convert to xt1095 and impossible to use custom roms. So for the moment you will not be able to get 6.0. Sorry.

Hello, I have a similar case. I am also from Europe and using the XT1096 but I have not yet upgraded to 5.1. I am currently on 5.0. What are my options and can I convert it to XT1095 so, I can later receive the Marshmallow OTA update? Thanks!

So I really wanted root access but I heard it was impossible on 5.1.
Here's what I did:
unlocked bootloader using motorola dev token
downloaded twrp 2.8.5.0-victara
booted into recovery using fastboot boot
flashed UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip from TWRP
And now my phone says it is rooted.
It can't be that easy... What have I misunderstood? Is this a temporary root or something?
Nope. That's it.
Root is only impossible for the xt1097 with 5.1 from AT&T. I assume your xt1097 is NOT from AT&T which is why it works.
