Gaming performance - performance drop - Huawei P9 Questions & Answers

Hello fellow P9 owners.
I have a huawei p9 L-19 (3GB ram and dual sim) for about a week now and ran into some gaming problems for Order and chaos 2 and walking war robots. I can play for about 1 minute and then the screen dims and performance starts to drop to about 15-20 fps. Then it goes back to normal (both screen and FPS). Then it happens again in a cycle. This happens to both games the same way, making them unplayable.
I don't have auto brightness activated and battery is set to performance. I tried a factory reset and still the same problem. I installed CPU-z and there is no throttling, temperature goes to about 45 Celsius.
I suspect it is a EMUI problem with marshmallow and not the game's fault. I saw that some galaxy S7 users have the same problem with stuttering.
Any idea what it could be? I will return the phone in 3 days if I'm unable to solve this problem... I find it unacceptable for these issues to happen in a flagship. Thanks guys!
Any ideas, solutions? Thank you!

Well if the game is having issues on other devices that aren't running EMUI I'd be inclined to think it is the games fault.
I've seen posts from other users who say they've been gaming for hours with no drop in performance.

Yes, but the same issue in 2 different games? That seems to be a phone problem...

Maybe the games just don't work well on Marshmallow? I'm just guessing...?

Maybe. Anyone else tried those games and had issues?

Try app > phone manager > battery > power plan > performance and settings > display > sleep > never

Tried it, did not work. It does the same. Maybe it's the guvernor settings, I don't know. Waiting for aome updates, either from huawei or the game.

Potentially a power settings issue? Have you had a look at that as the power settings on the phone can be very aggressive.

Well, I have it set to performance and haven't found any other settings. Do you have some suggestions?

I think I found a solution, it seems to work so far: need more testing. But, if you go to settings and search "battery" it will show an option "Ignore battery optimization" - click on it and show all apps. Then i searched for the games and allowed them to drain battery more quickly. Seems to work so far, for any other users that may encounter this problem.

[Q] 4X HD lag issue

Hello,
For the last 6 months or so, I've experienced many lag issues with my device. At the begging, I had a CM11 ROM installed on my phone, so I decided to revert back to the V20B official european firmware because I thought those lags were related to the ROM. But nothing changed, and as of today I still have responsiveness issues.
This lag issue appears from time to time, and makes my device basically unusable. It feels like the whole CPU is hogged by an application, or like I underclocked my device to 53mhz on purpose. During these lags, trying to wake up my device will take up to 5 seconds, and navigating the main screen will be nearly impossible. Also, my phone will get very hot which would imply that my CPU is indeed used by an application. Sometime the issue will disappear by itself after a few minutes, but I usually reboot the device which temporarily fixes the problem.
I have tried to disable LG MLT, and I think it helped but the lag still occasionally occurs.
I don't really use third party applications either.
I think these lags might be related to the Google Chrome browser, but it doesn't make any sense as it is an official app.
Anyway if any of you have an idea on how to fix the issue or how to find the application/service/whatever hogging the CPU I'd be grateful
Thanks !
I did experience such lags in CM11 after a few days of usage. But talking about stock, these freezes sound bit weird. You might want to check your installed apps.Download watchdog lite from play store and let it watch on agressive mode. Also check if your phone is hot when these freezes occur, might be the throttling kicking in.
I also experienced this kind of lags due to bad gapps I had installed back in the day, though stock ROM comes with gapps so it's not that.
Thanks for your reply,
I installed Watch dog lite and I'm now waiting for an alert. I hope it will give me the name of the culprit
If you are rooted which i assume you are. You can try app from playstore called "lagfix" (fstrim)
Sometimes really helps. Sometimes it doesn't

Experience with 5.01 Lollipop Update

Note 4 Bell Canada
Updated 5.0.1
Day 3 Extra Info
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Full day at work 85% battery at the end
Google Chrome PC and Android bookmark history sync works perfectly
Wifi hotspot works perfectly every time ... no dreaded "Limited connectivity" like I used to see with the GS3
Fast charging is awesome .... with the stable battery usage of Note4 with 5.0.1 it is so easy to keep this phone charged.
Bad: My phone keeps taking screenshots when I am on the lock screen and I don't know why.
Day 2 Extra Info:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The Good:
As far as I can tell everything works.
Bluetooth dropouts during locked state drastically reduced ..... sometimes stutters once a few seconds after lock and none observed after (JVC Car Audio Unit)
Menu multitask key is just as snappy as before (I had already disabled Google talkback)
Battery life is great ..... At 6*% after a full day at work ..... my GS3 was often near zero after a ful day in the same location
I can now give permissions to write to a microSD card
Standby battery life is great ...... charged 100% went to sleep .... woke up at 98% (My GS3 would be somewhere between 60 and 70% same location)
Every app I have is behaving normally
The Bad:
I got one random Google + forced close so far (that is no so bad I guess)
Update Process: Smooth as silk, no crashes, no lockups, no forced closures
The UI: New notifications are great, a lot of little improvements including and x if you want to close an app
Performance: same as before ... great no keyboard issues yet, no issues with toggling things on and off, Chrome scrolls web pages smoothy
Apps: All apps seem to work ... no forced closes
Battery: no obvious differences ... to early to tell
Things Fixed: My bluetooth connection stuttered like crazy in the car if the phone was locked .... seems like this was fixed in 5.0.1 ....
Seems like the max volume is louder now
I'm on Bell too and my experience is very similar to yours. So far I'm very happy with the update. No problems and I'm enjoying some of the new changes.

1. Power Saving on/off from setting not working. (No changes when u slide on the slider to on/off, only working via notification toggle)
2. GPU thermal throttling for benchmark. (I'm not a fan of benchmarking, but it's interesting to see the 3D behaviors on 5.0.1 unable to perform as what it should be if the phone temperature not cold enough)
3. Waze graphical glitches.
These are some of the possible bug that I realized and it need to be fixed in the next update.
However, overall experience still not that bad. The main issue for me now is the Waze graphical glitches which force me to temporary using Nokia Here Map at the moment.
I'm on BOC3 Malaysia. You may take a look on my signature for version information.

I'm from Malaysia too. But i don't have power saving problem.
Wake did not work properly.
Recent apps slower than before. Like 2 second lag.
No more option to change lockscreen animations
Data usage unable to view data usage in short period of time.
Some features were removed after upgrade.
Only useful additional thing is smart lock

As on 5.0.1, there are Pros & Cons.
Pros:
1. The finger print now is much much better than Kitkat
2. Feel like a bit faster.
Cons:
1. The Bluetooth is not so clear like on Kitkat and time to time no voice even if still on Bluetooth connecting. (Already try to unpair and repair, still not ok)
2. A bit warmer than Kitkat.
3. Eat more RAM than before
4. After sync calendar with Kies, all calendar on device are gone but still existing in outlook calendar.
Remark: I'm on SM-N9100 DUOS
Anyone having trouble with super su not granting privilege after rooting in G ?
I hate the lag and switch between screens on the brightness slider. I've gone back to kk
My experience has been great when it works (smoother UI, better battery life surprisingly).
One major issue though. 3 times, the phone rebooted overnight. All three times, it was while it was plugged into the charger, and it was stuck on the SAMSUNG logo (with bubbles animation). But I cannot get past it, and trying to restart via holding down the power button does not work.
Has anyone else experienced this yet?
Finally. Me too. Samsung Lollipop Update Problem

I AM experiencing this. I honestly think this update has broken my phone. My Samsung Galaxy S4 - when turned on, stays on the logo screen. Luckily for you it doesn't always do that but my phone won't even fully start up so I haven't been on it for two days. I really suggest you back up your phone because there may be a chance of it not turning on ever, like mine and a few phone shops are saying I need to completely wipe it. Does anyone know how to help? It would mean the world, thanks!
Battery life pretty disappointing. getting a good 10-14 hours under light usage. Heavy usage is out of the question if I'm leaving the house.
I downloaded the update yesterday and until now I must say it's amazing. Problems I had before with kitkat are gone. The speed is much faster. It's all so smooth and flat. I like it. I can't understand why everyone has issues with it. I'm using Note 4 SM-N910F.

Performance Question

Hey guys,
This may seem like an odd scenario but I bought my tablet months ago to game on it specifically for Clash Of Clans. Everything worked well up until this morning. I was making breakfast and realized that there was an optional update so I performed the update. I then accidentally dropped my tablet in the kitchen which landed on my kitchen mat (it also has a case). When I sat down and launched the newly updated game I am experiencing incredible game lag. Almost like the game is performing at 10 fps. I looked at Game Tuner and made sure everything was turned all the way up. I restarted the device multiple times, uninstalled Clash and reinstalled it three times. More reboots etc.. I even installed an earlier version of the game but I am still experiencing the choppyness.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do next? Did my drop in the kitchen cause the tablet to under-perform and possibly break or is this merely a software issue with the update? Can I force the game to go into some high performance mode? Definitely not how I wanted to start my morning!
Thanks in advance.

It appears that the issue was stemming from a low battery (around 35%). I came home to a fully charged system and there is no lag.
As long as it didn't crack, you should be fine.
You're right about the battery, I believe the processor begins throttling down at low battery
That's a Marshmallow battery saving feature. When you get to about 40% it starts turning off cores. Perfectly normal! My phone becomes noticeably slower when power dips. It's a bit annoying.
I think this also happens in lollipop (5.0.2) as well. Mostly around 35%...

huawei p9 plus limits my game graphic capability.

I'm currently playing Lineage 2 Revolution on on p9 plus. The first day of playing i maxed the graphics to enjoy the detail of the game, so when i wanted to save some battery i reduce the graphics in game options.
But since then.. when i maxed the graphics in game, it wouldnt let me do it anymore. it stays at low graphic even after i turned on "Force GPU Rendering" and restart my phone. ive reinstall the game also.
What should i do to get back my max GPU settings again? thanks
Did you change your "Power Plan" in your battery settings to "smart"? Try to set it to "Performance"!

phone running slow

Not happy with the performance of the P8Lite - scrolling is jumpy and often freezes for a few seconds. Facebook app definitely makes it worse, but even after removing that, the phone is still really slow. Has anyone else noticed this, and is there a solution? I expected better performance with the specs that the phone has.

Secure all apps and settings with the internal backup app.
If your phone is not rooted, do a factoryreset. Then everything should be fine.
This phone truly sucks right now. If anyone hasn't bought their phone yet pony up a few more quid and get the Xiaomi A1. It kills this, even just playing with the two at the store you will notice the difference.
Im gonna keep this and wait for the new lineage. In the mean time factory reset still did very little for my insane lag on B182 update. I have a GPS watch and LastPass going in the background so maybe I'm a bit too much of a power user for this budget/mid phone but the ONLY thing I've found that has made it slightly more bearable is to goto DEVELOPER options and shut off ALL animations. You'll probably get a 30-40 percent speed boost on your lag.
This phone run perfectly.
My P8 has become slow over the time. Swiftkey starts to be laggy during keypressed, fingerprint unlock sometimes dosnt work and i have to wake the phone pressing the power button, scrolling has laggy peaks.
But making a backup with HiSuite and doing a factory reset gave me back the snappy phone i had.
So, i think we just need a factory reset over few month to maintain the phone snappy as he is,
I had to play with Huawei's optimizer app but my phone runs really smooth. (I have small lags/crashes but it's very rare)

Tell me about it! For a supposedly custom CPU and THREE GIGABYTES of RAM, this thing is pathetic.

Same problem here. This phone becomes slow after a couple of days of uptime. Another issue I have is that it also freezes when toggling between portrait and landscape display. Rebooting the phone helps a bit, but the problem kicks back in after 1 or two days...
p8 Lite 2017
I got my Huawei p8 lite 2017 over a month ago. It was fine for the first few days but has become very slow. Last night I had to make a phone call at the airport. The phone app didn't even respond quick enough. I selected the person to phone and waited over a minute for the app to make the call because it was lagging.
Other than that:
- As a developer, my apps run fine when debugging.
- Music streams fine.
- Chrome runs fine.
- Youtube runs fine.
- Camera lags too much for quick photos. When opening the camera app, it freezes for about 30 seconds before it becomes usable.
- Rotation lags and you can see how the screen redraws.
- WhatsApp lags allot.
For a modern phone, this surely is a step in the wrong direction.
Cheers.
I have the same problem with mine. Barely 2 months old. It worked great until the last couple of weeks.
Now pretty much any scroll or swipe action results in the phone freezing, a transparent copy of the screen at the point of touching remaining, while the actual page underneath scrolls 'normally'.
These can last a couple of seconds or minutes. Then, you try doing something and it happens again. It does this in any app, homescreen, settings etc.
At times it is almost like screen tear as well.
RAM manager says I have always got 1gb+ remaining. I rebooted, it did nothing. Uninstalled some newer apps I'd got, did nothing. I backed up the phone and factory reset it..... It worked..... For about an hour or two, then it started up again.
Screenshots do not capture it either like I hoped it would.
