Please Help - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so I have a note 4 that was not working properly as it would boot into Odin mode when I tried to turn it on. That being said, it sometimes would boot normally or not turn on at all. So my solution was to root it and install a custom rom (like cyanogen mod). So I got odin and the twrp file and the custom kernel and followed the steps necessary: flash twrp, flash the kernel, flash super su, etc. But the problem is that Odin says "no pit binary". So I google it and found out that I could repartition it using a stock ROM and the correct pit file. I did that and it failed as well. So I turn to keis and do the firmware and initialization thingy, that ends up failing too. So I go back to odin and try to flash stock firmware but it fails after " writing NAND " thingy or it fails saying "cannot open specified file" or "no pit file ". What can I do.[emoji27]

Hey bud. Are you trying to flash a pit file and firmware or just firmware. And is it a N910T and if so on what build of firmware..? Send a screenshot of download mode...and also try to rename the extracted firmware file from .md5 to .tar and try to flash

Its a N910T and its on 5.1.1, i read on another XDA thread that to repartition something you need stock firmware (which I have a 5.1.1 one) and the right pit file (I have the N910T one) and that in odin put the extracted firmware file and on pit put the pit file. I did that and it failed. And how would I rename the file ... Would I just rename it on the file explorer on windows?

First it was a pit file and firmware, but now I'm trying to unbrick it by flashing just firmware on odin since keis doesn't seem to help. And yes it is an N910T, dont know the exact build but it is 5.1.1 ( would flashing a different 5.1.1(for the n910t) build matter or not, since its still 5.1.1 ?)

Yea if your on dok2 you can't go back to anything under that. It will fail every time. What firmware build u got

I dont know... The latest one ( the update for stage fright was the last update I had installed on there. Since it's soft bricked ( the connect to kies message) I can't tell what the exact build was... I just know its a 5.1.1 build.)

(Bricked?) [E:Can't mount] Used Odin to restore back to stock now it won't boot up

I have a Rogers i896 build 10.10 running froyo. I just tried to restore back to stock rogers froyo JL1 using Odin 1.81 and using a 512 pit file. I entered into download mode and the odin process complete then the phone reboots.
Now it entered into android system recovery <3e> . with this menu:
Reboot system now

delete all user data
delete cache data
format internal sd-card
it also says the following...

I'm a complete noob at this.. I read a lot and thought i'll give it a shot to flash a new rom.
Update. Tried to reflash, didn't work.
Tried to reflash with Stock Rogers Eclair, didn't work just went to the Recovery <2e> same error message with can't mount ....
I think this is bricked...
Any way around this?
did you just use the pit file and thats it? did you use the tar file in the pda slot as well?

I used the stock rogers froyo tar file from this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905042
My phone can't even be turned off. I tried all the options in the menu and it gives me the same error message.
I think the only way to turn it off is if I remove the battery

Sounds like a bad flash, can you get into download mode and try a reflash?
I just pulled out the battery to turn it off, and managed to get to download mode again. This time I tried odin 1.7. Odin says passed... but still the same error message
One thing I noticed that the re-partition check box on odin is checked when i put the pit file in there. I didn't realized it was checked so I clicked start with that on. It wasn't checked when I first opened the program. I just tried to reflash with it off, and same result
Is there no one here that can fix it?
I did some more searching around and found this post from the i9000 forums...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8683455&postcount=7
I guess I was suppose to uncheck re-partition and the stock rogers roms does not include cache.rfs and dbdata.rfs file inside.
Anyone know if there's a way to get a ROM that includes those files in them so I can reflash it?
here i used this stock 2.1 with odin 1.7 and it worked.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19201431/SGH-I896_UXJI2StockRogers2.1.zip
your phone isnt bricked. bricked is a specific thing and has a special screen.
flash 2.1 when doing stock. 2.2 stock includes 3e recovery and it requires all update.zip files to be digitally signed. there is a way around it but its extra steps. instructions here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
I tried to flash to stock 2.1 with odin but same thing happened.
It boots into recovery and i can't do anything... except its 2e instead of 3e that i saw before.
whats the exact filesize of the tar you used?
also if you dont re-partition, you dont need a pit file. (the p stands for partition)
The exact file size for the TAR is 238 MB (250,420,736 bytes)
I didn't know PIT is re-partition until after the fact.
Ok, I'm going to see if I can get my phone in the same condition as yours and then fix it. BRB...
Broke it and fixed it. Details in a sec.
Ok my steps to break it:
Flashed UXJL1 with Odin 1.81 using 512.pit and repartition checked.
Boot lands in recovery with can't mount error.
Steps to fix.
Used Odin 1.81 to flash the JH2 firmware from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10056254&postcount=36.
Did not check partition, did not load a pit file.
I've seen that error before but I couldn't remember how I fixed it. I think the key is simply to Odin flash 2.1 firmware using no pit and no repartition. I chose the package above because it doesn't change your boot loader and is compatible with newer phones.
flash into the AT&T 2.1 with the one click, what you probably did was Odin into the rogers 2.2 without turnning off lagfix. for some reason the rogers version doesnt actually repartition your phone.

[Q] Flashing Back to stock firmware on my tab

Sorry guys for being a noob.
Story is my tab is rooted and flashed with the OVERCOME RC 2.0 GOLD rom from following alterbridge's thread procedures. Beautiful rom, no complaints.
However the screen has been acting up lately with the finger held down and screen shaking issue.
Ive searched and searched and have concluded its a hardware problem.
I need to flash back to stock for warranty.
For being the noob I am, I've downloaded the stock files....but I don't know how to flash it back.
Attached is a picture of a .zip file of the files inside the zip. Do I use ODIN to flash back? What are the procedures? What file is associated with which box in ODIN? Sorry I just don't have a clue. Or do just throw this into my tab's SD memory and update from CWM recovery mode?...
Do I use superoneclick to unrooted after back to stock rom?
I just don't want to brick my tab...Thanks for any help...
The stock ROM should be a 2.2 FROYO, and the ROM I'm on right now is on Gingerbread...if this makes any difference...
Use this guide first flash with odin it tells you how to flash with odin at the bottom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894763
and after flash whatever froyo rom you want make sure you got the one that shipped with your device if its going back for warrenty again flash with odin and your done.
Edit dont forget the thanks button if this hellped you .
Thanks for the link.
So i have the .pit file for the PIT section.
No need for phone and csc section i assume.
But for PDA section i dont have any files available? From my attached picture. i only have a data.tar.gz file. Im not sure what that file is? do i just rename it to .tar??? please help
Sorry not sure on them files i think you can use heidmal with those files do a search on here for that
Anyone???
What do I use? ODIN? HEIMDALL? I need help please.
From overcome gold you will have to re-stock to froyo. Which means a repartiton with pit file + phone + modem files. You will need odin for this.
I would suggest flash back to a safe froyo rom first - as per jutleys link above. Then flash back to your original firmware version.
From the pic above looks like you have unzipped the full.zip. For Odin You need the full zip in the pda section, modem zip in the modem and the pit file in the pit section. Download full zips from roto's link above.
Then check out roto backup thread (shows how to restore using heimdall / odin). As i havent flashed back to my original firmware yet, someone else could advise better. I am assuming for stock purposes you need to put the original stock firmware zip into pda section of odin and leave everything blank and then flash away.
Cheers

Thank you for your response. I'll work on getting back safely to a froyo rom.
As for the picture, it is a pic of the content inside the full zip already. Should i unzip and enter modem and pit according? But what goes into the pda section?

That pic is from a firmware from samfirmware? It has the bootloaders in it so be very careful as flashing bootloaders can cause bricks or be protected ones. As i said before, i think you flash the full zip in the pda section and leave the rest blank i.e no need to unzip.
But do so only after flashing using roto safe froyo rom.
As for the files above, It might be wise to take out the bootloaders then rezip & flash but i would wait on someone with a bit more knowledge just to confirm this.
As long as they are the original files for your firmware, you should be ok.
Thanks for your help ezynow.
UPDATE: I've successfully downgraded from Overcome Gingerbread to Overcome Froyo now.
Now it's just a matter of getting my head wrapped around this stock ROM right. The order, and where the files should go.
Anyone else would like to share their insight? This is the file I downloaded, and this is how it is presented to me. I just need someone to help me sort out what is what.
Thanks.
UPDATE #2: Tried re-zipping and converting to tar file. ODIN failed. Re-zipped into tar again without the data.tar.gz file because I don't know what it is, and failed again.
I don't know what to do anymore. How do I get this to work?
bump
anyone?
UPDATE #3: Tried loading the whole .zip file from CWM. No luck.
Who's your service provider?
I sugest look for another stock rom here that is in the correct format i am sure i seen a post showing all stock roms somewhere use odin
Link deleted. It mentions to use pit file + full zip in pda section . Then says out of date.
Also did you check rotobbackup method thread - use heimdall and flash individual files from your extraced zip files. Assuming you can avoid flashing bootloaders you should only be a soft-brick if anything goes wrong and download mode still available.
Forget about using cwm for anything stock related.
Sum1 who has reverted back to stock surely can help out here!
p.s what was your original firmware version?
I have succesfuly downgraded from gb overcome gold to arabic froyo using the file from samfirmware. First try resulted in stuck at samsung logo but I was expecting that due to the ext4 partition. A cache wipe and factory reset in recovery solved that problem. Also I observed when going to recovery that there were errors in red that are coming out complaining of access problem to certain files. Since I am able to boot I then proceded to format the internal sd. After that I again flashed using the same arabic fw. No problems so far even kies sees my fw as the latest.
Here is the procedure I followed-change the files according to your fw version

Thanks a lot for the help guys.
I will try going to another stock firmware later this afternoon.
However, the firmware I really need is P1000MUGJJ7 (Bell's stock firmware).
The files I have in hand are apparently the files for this firmware, but how to restore it, I have zero clue. These we're sent to me by a member on this forum.
I think the member said that these were created from roto backup.
I have looked everywhere else for this firmware version but it's NOWHERE. Neither does samfirmware.com
So to sum it up, pretty much these are my only sources to play with, and just gotta make it work...
Please help and thanks again.

OK. So you are suggesting I take out pit file then CONVERT in someway the whole .zip file into .tar file for the PDA section, am I correct?
Now, I need a proper way to convert this file because I tried this using a converter I downloaded online. And after the conversion, the .tar files was double the size (over 400mb, original ~200mb). And flashing through ODIN using this new file didn't work. So what's the proper way to convert?

[Q] ODIN - Check image files !! Works for others though...

So I've downloaded the following kernels from a link here on XDA that should be swapping kernels to allow me root on my recently upgraded, stock ROGERS 2.3.3 Captivate. Odin is telling me to "Check image files !!" when I load the .tar files into the Select Intergrated Package (and yes, the one package switch is on). I opened the tar to double check it wasn't double-compressed.
What else would be giving me this problem? I'm using Odin 4.28. Curiously, it is showing my phone as detected, my phone IS in downloading mode, but Odin just says (Android) in the Title, no specific model. But it says it's found it on COM 6. <1> Added!! and Detected!!
It's when I load up the kernel tar's and try to start that it yells at me. Is this triggering anything in anyone's mind that I'm doing wrong? Or do I need to provide more info?
I am using Vista 32-bit (legit) on a Dell studioXPS. And I ran it as administrator.
never heard of ODIN 4.28. i think its only up to version 1.82 or so.
sounds like you are using the wrong ODIN

Yeah. That is def the wrong version of Odin. Download the i9000 bootloaders in my sig. Unzip it. Delete the pda.tar.md5 file. Use the included version of Odin (1.82 I think) to flash your kernel.
Alright, quick question - I accidentally flashed the phone, not the pda. I tried to flash the KH2 modem back via phone but ODIN failed. Kies is currently not detecting the phone, and so I decided to try flashing the PDA while I had it open and I would figure the modem out after. ODIN hung, so I closed it and rebooted out of downloading mode and got the Phone ! Computer error. So I figure now I have to flash back to the stock rom and start over again, but this time I would like some advice as to which step to take next. I downloaded I896UXKH2-HOMEBINARY.tar.md5 from another thread here. Can I flash this with Odin - and if so, which is the place to load it? Bootloader? PDA? Phone? CSC? I have no PIT files.
Think it goes into the pda slot. Go back to the thread t you got it from and read the first post of the thread. Also restart your computer before trying to flash again.
can someone upload the modem.zip, please thank you

[Q] I9305 4.4.4 to 4.1.1 downgrade with Knox bootloader

I would be very grateful for some assistance with this, after trying many firmwares with Odin (most now blocked because of Knox bootloader), custom recovery etc. etc.
Basically I want to downgrade my I9305 from 4.4.4 to 4.1.1 so that I can use the 'trick' for SIM unlocking the device. This is after finding out that GalaxSim Unlock can't be used with this device, which I tried after rooting under 4.4.4.
I have a 4.1.1 firmware on the way which I can flash with Odin, but I'm conscious that each time I do this since upgrading to 4.3/4.4.4 the Knox bootloader comes up with 'Unsupported version'.
Is it possible for me to copy the boot.img file from the 4.4.4 firmware package and replace the boot.img file in the 4.1.1 package? Will that work? I don't really understand the ins and outs of this yet and it's getting very frustrating when I can't find any answers on Google to these specific questions.
If the above doesn't work, what option do I have to downgrade to stock 4.1.1?
Many thanks for your help.

Thank you so much for this; I got excited that it might finally be a solution but alas, when I try to install the ROM in CWM recovery (6.0.4.7) I get the following message:
format() expects 5 args, got 4
E:Error in /data/media/0/stock411.zip (I renamed it and copied it again to internal phone storage in case it was a bad transfer to ext SD card previously)
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
A quick search suggests a bad download perhaps? Will try again in 5m (when the re-download completes) but if that fails I'm back to square one.
Do you think it'd be possible to flash another stock firmware in this manner? If you flash from CWM does it never affect the bootloader/Knox? Or is this error message coming from a Knox-type block, do you think?
Thanks for your input.
Update
Late last night I somehow managed to flash a stock 4.1.1 ROM from a rather messed up 4.4.4 (following CWM recovery backup restore [apps were 'stopping' left right and centre making the phone unusable, even after wiping cache and delvik cache]). This enabled me to do the dialler trick and remove the SIM lock.
Today I've tried 3 different 4.1.2 ROMs and all fail with SW Rev. Invalid Magic String (or something similar) using Odin. After the first failed attempt I thought ok, I'll go back to 4.1.1; however when I tried this the phone got stuck on the first Samsung I9305 boot screen and, oddly, I couldn't get into recovery mode - the only option was download mode. I resolved this by flashing 4.3 (which fails with Device 3, Binary 2 or some such message. After that failure though, flashing 4.1.1 works and got my phone back to where it was before.
This is all rather confusing but I assume the 4.1.1 ROM doesn't come with recovery/boot images and requires these from a failed 4.3 flash, or something like that.
Anyway, I guess the upshot is: there's a specific 4.1.1 ROM out there for I9305 which works through Odin despite Knox bootloader being installed on your phone. It's on TSAR3000.com (I can't post links yet 'cause I'm new, but you can find it through Google if you look hard enough).
Any feedback on the above behaviour encountered during my first foray into the land of rooting, flashing and SIM unlocking that may help me/others understand what's actually going on behind the scenes would be much appreciated!
Thanks.

Downgrade is very easy. Extract that tar and then select all files except sboot.bin because sboot is the bootloader which causes downgrade fail then compress them into tar agin using 7zip then flash. First do all this with 4.1.2 firmware then you will be able to downgrade to 4.1.1☺

ok
first when you download the zip fie the firmware from sammobile , extract it using 7zip you will get a tar file also extract it using 7zip you will get many files like boot.img ,syste.img,tz.img and cache.img etc. now you have to select all files except sboot.bin because this file causes problem in downgrading it is bootloader, now select all files and left click and go in 7zip option click add to acheieve then select tar and tap ok.now it will compress it into tar file flash this file with odin put your phone into download mode by holding volume down +home+poweron button you will see download mode press volume up to continue ,download odin 3.9 from google select that tar in AP option install samsung usb drivers first then connection ct with usb cable now you will see id com connected in odin click flash and wait untill it get's finished after perform factory reset.

Now select all files except sboot.bin and compress into tar file by using green + button or left click options and the flash with odin google it how to flash with odin there many detailed guides available.
And I don't know that sboot.bin is in 4.1.1 firmware you can check by extracting that tar of 4.1.1 as you done with 4.4 file if any sboot.bin is there remove it and compress all remaining fies into tar again and flash.
PERFECT!!!!!!!!!

Unable to downgrade from 4.4.4
Tried to follow the tutorial but failed.
I have an I9305 with KitKat 4.4.4 that I would like to downgrade to do the Sim unlock trick.
I downloaded I9305XXUENH1_I9305EVRENH1_EVR.zip from Sam Mobile (thats 4.3 for the I9305)
I extracted the files removed sboot.bin and compressed the files to I9305XXUENH1_I9305EVRENH1_I9305XXUENG1_HOME.tar
I then flashed that file with odin but got the following:
<ID:0/004> Added!!
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> File analysis..
<ID:0/004> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/004> Initialzation..
<ID:0/004> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/004> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/004> boot.img
<ID:0/004> NAND Write Start!!
<ID:0/004> Complete(Write) operation failed.
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
I have now flashed 4.4.4 and the phone is working again.
Anybody help?

Thanks a lot to spanish guys, I used their 4.1.1. custom rom.
I struggled long time with this sim unlock problem as I was with UK EE network.
Now my phone is free !
Stuck at Samsung logo after flashing 4.1.1 on
I cant get past the samsung logo after flashing the following file:
Product Code: GT-I9305TADEVR (4.1.2) (EE UK)
PDA: XXBMD5

CSC: EVRBLL2

found on this thread by lyriquidperfection following qasim's suggestion to remove sboot.bin on top of I9305XXUFNI3_I9305DBTFNI3_DBT.zip which is a 4.4.4 stock rom. I have unzipped the tar file, removed sboot.bin, rezipped with 7zip as tar, then used ihsas's script to convert that to tar.md5 and flashed with odin, and stuck at the white logo screen. What is wrong here i am doing? I also need to unlock my carrier

You'll find it on sammobilehttp://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/GT-I9305/EVR/

Pretty sure i ruined my phone.

Was in the process of IMEI repair. (Just for reference.)
My phone use to be rooted and on a custom rom. It was previously reverted back to stock DOK2 5.1.1. My phone cannot be flashed anymore for some reason. I cant even flash the DOK2 file that goes in AP. I tried flashing the trlte pit file and now my phone doesn't boot past the T-Mobile logo. I think im missing some files to do a full ODIN flash.
U need to flash trltetmo pit file. Trlte is for N910F I believe and I think it's 16gb internal sd. U need to flash 100% stock dok2 with the pit file and make sure repartition is checked. If it fails....try renaming the .tar.md5 to just .tar (remove md5) for some reason I can't flash stock any other way

I don't have a specific answer to your problem, but make sure you try and wipe the cache as well. I remember having a situation where I was trying to flash my device back to stock and it was bootlooping. The problem ended up being that I hadn't properly wiped everything from the custom ROM I had been on.
