Hi everyone,
I have an AT&T Captivate SGH-i897 (2nd hand) and i can't mount the phone to my laptop (winXP 32bit). When i plug in the cable to the phone and then the PC i get the "device not recognized".I've donwloaded the Samsung drivers from the xda wiki page and extracted them and tried to update the driveres via Device Mng ,but didn't work.Also dl'ed the Samsung drivers 5.0.x instaled ,and still nothing.USB Debugging is on...
So to recap,my top can't recognize the phone('s internal sd card) so plz help ???????

I would also recommend trying to fully uninstall all the drivers that associated on your pc with your phone (samsung or otherwise), and then reinstall the drivers before you plug in your phone. Then try to reconnect.
Just covering the basics. Assuming your phone is working correctly.
You have tried multiple USB ports on your computer, particularly those on the back if it's a desktop.
You have installed correct drivers (x86 or x64)
" for the correct operating system.
You have uninstalled the drivers before trying to reinstall.
You've tried to get Windows/ Mac to find them online (assuming you're using versions of OS that support doing that)
You've first tried Kies mini before full version, uninstalling in between. (Kies full version isn't supported for US, there are workarounds, but that's a different discussion)
On the phone you tell the phone to connect 'USB storage' (from the pull down menu after connected or in the settings)
I too am having problems with USB connectivity on a notebook with Win7/64. The usual failure mode is Windows not recognizing the USB device. I have followed ZBigT's basics, step by step and still cannot connect.
FWIW, my registry is awash with Samsung entries, some of which cannot be deleted.
I've even tried the AIO Toolbox application (to install the 64 bit drivers) to no avail.
Any other tips?
Is usb debugging turned off?

When I plug in the Captivate, any of 3 USB ports on the laptop, Windows gives the "Unrecognized Device..." message.
Go to settings/about phone. Look at the very bottom to see what rom you are running.

FWIW, I also have a Win7/64 desktop with the usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64 installed and that works fine; can connect see "drives", use ODIN, adb commands etc.
It just the notebook, which I would like to be able to use to connect, especially when I travel, which has issues.

Check in program files for a Samsung folder. There may be remnants from old drivers that need to be manually deleted.

Thanks for sticking with this. I was able to connect. I as focused on the Registry remnants, but your advice to clear out the Samsung folder in Programs worked. Thank you.
Additional comments: I am now running the Dlev ROM, it's OK, but when I plugged in the USB cable, just to the phone, it launched the Alarm Clock app! So I deleted that.
Then on the first of my four USB ports I got a USB driver failure to install, then the Windows Unrecognized USB device on ports 2 & 3. On port 4 it worked. (This is a Lennovo/Thinkpad notebook.)
I used the usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64 package as that also worked on my desktop.

I'm facing this "please insert a disk" issue when connecting my Note to computer via USB Debugging mode / Mass Storage Mode.
I'll let screenshots in the attachment explain itself. #1 shows the screenshot of devices menu when the phone is plugged into the computer in DEBUG mode; #2 shows the screen after I've clicked "connect USB storage" from the drop-down list of the phone; #3 shows what happens when I try to open one of the two "removable disks".
MTP mode works fine, as well as Kies connection. As I finally started exploring the potential of Android platform, I realized that MTP and Kies connection are the most useless connection options for me, and I'd rather leave it in debug mode all day. So has anybody experienced this issue, or had any suggestion on the solution?
As always, many thanks in advance, and many thanks button clicks afterward!

Desktop OS: Win7 Pro X64 SP1
Note: 2.3.6 Stock LB1 Open Germany Firmware, CF rooted LB1 kernel.
Also, I should have all the latest official device driver from Samsung, as I have the latest version of Kies installed (and I discovered a driver folder under Kies' installed location). I'm not so sure about adb driver, but I was able to find the Note to be listed under devices by typing "adb devices". So.. I don't know where could've gone wrong.
Help anyone?
This really sounds weird... I was facing problems of the Galaxy Note not being detected on several Windows7 32/64-Bit SP1 computers as well but this was gone after I installed SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.
You are right - from all that i know all required drivers should be available when KIES is installed on your system. Whatis even more strange is that your device seems to be detected as two partitions are available and are displayed in Explorer...
So I would test the following:
- check if your device manager lists any unknown devices
- Uninstall KIES and try to find the SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones and install those
- check all available USB ports and see if this solves the problem
- try another USB cable
- make sure your (external) SD card is formatted with a Windows compatible file-system e.g. FAT32

My device manager basically listed all the drivers/devices associated with the phone:
My Device manager shows devices:
Samsung Android Composite ADB interface
Android UMS Composite USB device (x2)
SAMSUNG Android USB Modem
USB Mass Storage Device
USB Mass Storage Device (Android)
I've attached the screenshot when all the drivers being installed when the phone is firstly connected to the computer. Also in the device manager, everything shows "this device is working properly"
I then decided to test with another Note of my friend's (On the same computer). Her Note has no SD card in it, and is completely stock ROM non-rooted LA4 Open Germany firmware. The same thing happened.
One thing worth mentioning: Yesterday, this worked only for once. When I initially encountered this issue, I restarted my computer, and boom, my phone was connected in Debugging mode! However, once disconnected, and I tried to connect it to the computer again, this issue came back. And afterward, no matter how I restart my computer, the phone won't get connected.
I also tried all USB port (USB 2.0 and 3.0), three different cables (2 of them are Samsung OEMs) and failed to address the issue.
I'm nearly exhausted but I will never give up, as this is my only computer and my only phone (haha), and without solving this issue, I'm never gonna be able to view the phone as a USB storage and easily transfer the file from my computer to the phone.
I'm going to try the last thing that I haven't done from the list you posted:
- Uninstall KIES and try to find the SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones and install those
I believe that I can keep the driver folder in the Kies' folder, as I believe those are the newest Samsung driver, given that the Kies was the latest release version.
So far, I can only conclude that this issue is not related to specific phone but the Windows 7.

BTW, I was able to extract both SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe from under Kies' installation path under Program Files x86 folder, and an uncompressed folder of all kinds of drivers for Samsung device, called "USB Drivers".
And looks like I was wrong. The newest version of SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones I had was 1.4.8. While the driver that came with the newest Kies was 1.4.103

That's the last thing I would do
I've added a few apps to my S3 and altered a few things on my PC and now I can't connect via mtp or ptp. It goes through the usual "installing drivers" and then fails. I've tried pulling the battery and removing the sim and micro sd card then putting everything back. Tried it without the card (currently having to transfer files via a card reader so - at least the card's fine) but to no avail.
I've had a go at uninstalling the drivers through the device manager, rebooting and scanning for hardware changes. I've tried downloading the drivers without kies but it didnt work out (I cant remember the site or the url, but ended up with the following file SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones) It didn't auto install but even when I tried to point Windows to the folder on my C drive, nothing.
I've spent a couple of hours trawling the net including on here and tried all sorts.
I'm rooted, using the stock 4.1.2 ROM with Windows 7.
I can't use Kies as when it was installed the first time it wrecked all my Synctoy sync's so I really could do with another option please guys.
Dial *#7284# on your phone to access PhoneUtil and select 'Qualcomm USB Settings' at the bottom.
Now select 'MTP + ADB' and press 'OK' to return to the previous screen. Now press your 'Back' key to exit PhoneUtil. Your phone is now back to default USB operation.

Thanks for the quick reply.I did that and it was set to mtp + adb...
When I then connected it it tried installing the driver and I got..
Driver device software was not installed.
Please consult with your device manufacturer for assistance getting this device installed

From what I'm reading it's a computer error not the phone. Can anyone suggest a new set of drivers to download (that doesnt involve Kies) as I've had issues with picking up harmful software from random sites when I've been struggling to find drivers.
I tried using the suggestion at the bottom of here r.e.Portable Devices and deleting the Upperfilters string Link but also to no avail.
Oh, and yes I've tried different ports and cables.
Well that's me done for the evening! I've tried everything mentioned in this thread including updating java and windows media player and all the afformentioned stuff but still no dice.
Could it be the actual drivers or a random windows 7 setting that I haven't yet tweaked since my clean install of windows??

The newer drivers don't really wwork with the 9305 so find some older drivers. That works for me

The ones I posted work fine on my 9305 so you shouldn't have any issues and as you can see from the site they are nearly a year old.
Try them what have you got to loose, if they don't work you are no worse off

Cheers, yeah, I was going to try them but I wasn't at my pc at the time I wrote that. I've downloaded the exe package but now it seems there are still drivers to uninstall - I uninstalled the drivers through device manager and went into my C drive and removed the SAMSUNG folder with the USB drivers in it. I'll restart the pc and hope that helps with the removal....

Having the same problem. but I am on 4.3 rom using carbon rom a few days then transferred to pac man rom. My cellphone is not detected in my computer but it is being detected in the safely remove usb options. I tried to use a usb otg cable and a flash disk. No notification is seen on my phone but I can access the files on the flash disk (using usb otg cable) in the file manager. Tried the *#7284# but error occurs and says connection problem or invalid MMI code. I found that MTP udb device says failed

It made no difference whatsoever. I used a utility to check for an remove the samsung drivers (USBDeview) as well as uninstalling through device manager and removing with windows "products and features" but even then, when I tried installing the new drivers it mentioned previous drivers. I restarted after each stage of the process.
I've even tried connecting it in download mode and it shows in device manager.
Could there be some remnant of the software I used to root that phone that might be causing the issue??
I'm due to leave the country in 5 days and have loads of things to sort (also have a family member going into hospital for major surgery tomorrow) so I can't just devote all my time to this - but I need to at least know that it's not the phone (I dont have another win 7 computer to try it on).

Just got the same problem. But my problem is already solved. Just flash a new rom. In my instance, I flash ripper rom
For the past week I've been trying solution after solution found from the net to try and get my HTC One to connect to my computer and show up as a portable device. I'm running Windows 7 x64 SP1 with all updates possible, latest drivers and chipset drivers and even installed optional drivers to try and fix the problem. I've tried USB Debugging and nothing happens, tried uninstalling all drivers from USB device manager and reinstalling which also didn't work, tried installing MTP drivers seperatly, nothing happens, tried windows update's htc drivers, they fail to install every time.
My problem in short is, I cannot get my device to connect to the computer so I can use the storage space to add/remove/edit files on my phone.
I've recently tried a program called "DoubleTwist" which actually got the HTC Sync Manager to recognise my phone, but even that shows no storage available.
My details:
Windows 7 SP1 x64 PC,
HTC One in metallic blue 32GB,
HTC MTP Device Drivers Failed
MTP USB Device Drivers Failed x3
Developer unlocked,
USB Debugging On/Off

Umh, connect the phone at the pc, go to Device Manager (windows logo + x -> device manager), and unistall all the voice about the one.
After go to the control panel, and unistall the htc driver from here.
Now, install HTC sync.
For me and other friend worked.
I've tried uninstalling the failed drivers but they still fail every time i plug the device in, It's not really a problem with htc sync manager as I've pretty much given up on that already. My problem is that I can't get my computer to recognize my device, only as a cd drive which is for the installation of htc sync manager and and relevant drivers.
I've tried your solution 5 times before and it doesn't fix the issue as it's the drivers failing to install and the fact it won't accept drivers for my usb device for MTP or pretty much anything related to my device.
Anyone know of away to remove the bad drivers and install fresh working ones without crippling the use of my mouse and keyboard? because windows suggests I remove the usb host controller drivers which kills the use of all usb ports on my computer, meaning i have to replug them in turn re-installing the usb host controller drivers at the same time.
still got the problem of not being able to connect my device and have it recognized, by the computer as mass storage, removable storage, or MTP. that is the real problem I'm trying to fix, after that I may consider trying to get htc sync manager to work.
Any help at all would be nice... Anyone?
I guess my problem is unfix-able then, just to make it clear, i don't give a stuff about the sync manager, i just want to be able to have my computer recognize my phone so i can access it through my computer...

Got the exact same problem, work PC won't recognise the device. Haven't tried home just yet as this is the first it has occurred. Software update a couple days ago.
Called HTC - no dice, they keep saying install HTC Sync and the drivers.
Anyone else come across this issue/have a solution?
I posted in a different thread, but let me sum up again.
I had a couple of people reporting this issue on Win7 - phone connected to USB, came up as android device with exclamation mark in Device Manager. It really made me think what could have happened, because it was working a week before. I tried different cable, different drivers and realized it was something wrong, when even my phone was not recognized on my friend's PC, yet both of the phones (mine & his) were recognized on my notebook with all the cables and config.
It turned out, that he installed malware stuff and the culprit was iLivid and his friends. It blocked the usb connection somehow. After running Malwarebytes in safe mode, which removed a tons of sh*t, everything worked again.

Downloaded the latest Android USB drivers as well as the SDK. When updating the device from the device manager, ADB drivers loaded fine, but MTP drivers and "Nexus 6" (camera mode) drivers will not install no matter what I try. USB debugging mode or not, no dice.
What I did find odd, is that when opening the android_winusb.inf file that was packaged in the latest usb drivers, there is no mention of a Nexus 6 phone inside - which explains why the drivers won't install See screenshots below.

I'm having similar issues, laptop running win 7 can't see Nexus 6, DL'd drivers, even tried Motorola for drivers but although showing in device manager as installed no connection
At least they installed for you. The drivers don't even recognize my device. I still get a yellow Nexus 6 in device manager with no usable connection. Ugh...

Seems to be a lot of this going around. I'm on win 8.1. I couldn't get the drivers to work via the sdk. Then I tried the Google and Motorola drivers. After deleting the devices on device manager I finally got the N6 to connect via mtp. However, I can't the computer won't connect via mtp if USB debugging is on. On top of that I can't get adb to even see the phone. I would suspect it's more of a Windows problem at this point. I need to do some more testing from another pc.

Managed to connect via PTP eventually by uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, seems to work with PTP and USB debug on, but not with MTP

This may not apply to you at all, but with the mess of Android drivers I have to install over time I've finally figure out a solution when something is not installing correctly. Did you try right clicking on the Nexus 6 (I'm assuming that has a yellow exclamation point) going to:
Update Driver Software > Browse my computer... > Let me pick from a list > Portable Devices > and find a compatible MTP driver in there
I'm saying Portable Devices specifically because that's how my Nexus 6 shows up as (as an MTP device) in the device manager.
Use the universal naked drivers. I have multiple devices and the drivers don't cooperate with each other but since I installed the naked drivers I have had any issues.

I fixed it! Wug's toolkit didn't work, although I'm about to use it to unroot, lock, and return my phone to factory state since it has to be taken back to the AT&T store to be replaced due to a screen defect. Hope they don't freak out about the death star being scratched off, lol.
Anyway, oddly enough the problem is because I'm using Windows 8.1 N, which doesn't come with Windows Media Player or any of the media features. Installing the Media Feature Pack for N and KN versions of Windows 8.1 sorted it out. Installed, rebooted, done. I can now access the device in any mode and the device driver errors are gone.

Ran into the same issue initially when I was trying to root my Nexus 6. Wug's didn't work, and neither did the naked universal drivers. Added the Nexus 6 ID to the inf and still didn't work.
Had to install the Motorola driver kit, and then go through the drivers as above to find a Motorola that finally worked; while the Motorola driver is just a wrapper for some Microsoft driver that normally comes built into Windows since Windows 7.

I discovered the following troubleshooting tip listed below (amongst others) at the website above. It worked flawlessly with my brand new unlocked stock Motorola NEXUS-6 (XT-1103) and Windows-7 PC. Thank you and big props to the developer(s) who posted it!
1.Connect your Nexus 6 to computer with a USB cable and open Device manager on your computer.
2.Look for ‘Android Composite ADB Interface‘ entry, right-click and select uninstall from the context menu.
3.In the uninstall pop-up that appears, tick ‘Delete the driver software for this device’ checkbox and press the “Ok” button.
4.Disconnect your phone from your computer.
5.Disable USB debugging on your Nexus 6 from Settings » Developer options » un-tick ‘USB debugging’ checkbox.
6.Put your Nexus 6 in MTP mode (It should be in MTP by default unless you selected the Camera (PTP) mode).
7.Connect your Nexus 6 to the computer again, and let the computer re-install drivers automatically. If it doesn’t re-installs driver, try toggling the ‘USB debugging’ option on your device.
Same here. Nexus 6 stock lollipop 5.1.1 with unlocked bootloader. I thought it was my personel windows 7 pc. But no its any pc I try to connect to. Found that out because I work at a big business full of windows pc's. I remember at one point not having this problem at all. Don't know if it was before one of the lollipop updates but I remember I used to connect my phone at work on any pc the pc would automatically open MTP asking me what I wanted to do. That was without adb turned on. I've tried everything searched everywhere, installed,uninstalled drivers from Google, Motorola etc. Even tried wugfresh's instructions. My pc does not recognize my phone at all. Mtp, Adb, Fastboot, nothing. Weird thing is I also have a nexus 5 and as soon as I connect it its recognized. Don't know if it maybe the cable that's the only thing I haven't tried since my cables are not Motorola cables, or nexus 6 original cable as that is the way I bought it. But it used to connect. Now I'm stuck, at a loss. Don't get it, called Motorola, Google, T-Mobile. I think they know nothing about phones as when I tell them the problem they look at me like I'm talking Chinese. If anyone knows what the problem is and have been able to fix it please hit me up @ [email protected] Just about to give up. I just don't understand what the problem maybe. Running stock lollipop 5.1.1 with unlocked bootloader never rooted. Thanks and hope someone can help.
I had the same issue. I installed the latest google drivers from the Android SDK and my computer would not recognize my Nexus 6. I couldn't use fastboot or anything. I was able to fix this though. With my Nexus 6 hooked up to my computer, I opened device manager. There was the "unknown device" which was my Nexus 6 obviously. I right clicked on it and attempted to install the driver, the automatic driver installation method could not find it. I had to point it directly to the file. The file is located in the android-sdk files. I had to point it to c:/android-sdk/extras/google Obviously location will vary depending on where you installed the android-sdk. Just make sure to only point it to extras/google. I wen't further in the first attempt and it didn't work. I hope this helps. I suck at explaing stuff.

This didn't work the first or second time. I did steps 2 through 7 3 times and then it worked. I must have had a lot of drivers installed.
So if it doesn't work the first time, keep uninstalling the drivers and try again and again. Worse case scenario, you have to install the drivers again. hope this helps.
I want to add my own tale to his thread with the hope that it will help someone. I could not see the Nexus 6 when I set MTP mode or MIDI mode. The phone showed up on the PC when I selected PTP (camera) mode. In my case, I had four external USB3 hard drives connected. I finally turned off the hard drives and then MTP mode would be visible, both as a Portable Device, named Nexus 6, in the Device Manger, and as the same under My Computer in Windows Explorer. After Imy PC recognized the Phone in MT mode, I tuned on the external drives and all were visible.
