(DISCONTINNUED
This TWRP is only for Speadtrum 3G!!!!
Hi folks!
Finally we have a twrp for your Sm-j120H Spreatrum that works! Here's the link:
Root SM-J120H working.rar
http://www20.zippyshare.com/v/XmD4XuEW/file.html
If you want to test (do it for your own risk)!
STEPS:
1 - Unzip file on your computer;
2 - Open Odin folder and copy the supersu zip file to your internal memory (without unzip it);
3 - Open Odin (double click on blue icon);
4 - Click on "AP" icon and select the twrp tar file on Odin folder (j1 (6).tar);
5 - Turn on "Unlock OEM" and "USB Debugging" on Delevoper Options (Actvating Delevoper Options: seven clicks on Build Number - Software Info);
6 - Turn off your phone and turn on again holding Volume Down + Home Button + Power Button (Download Mode). When a screen with some texts appears, release all buttons and press Volume Up again to activate the Download Mode;
7 - After this, connect your phone to your computer and click Start on Odin. Wait until your device restarts;
8 - Disconnect your phone to your computer and turn it off. Turn it on holding Volume Up + Home Button + Power Button (Recovery Mode). When your phone vibrates and appears J1 6 logo, release all buttons. If worked, TWRp will starts;
9 - Select the language, click on Read Only and the TWRP starts. After this, click on Install and search The Supersu zip you copied. Click on it and drag the flash file. Wait finish it. Restart the system. Done!

IMPORTANT!!!!!!
This twrp was tested and worked on brazilian devices. Others had some problems. Test it and comment your feedback here!
If you are a developer and interests to work on this file, but doesn't have the device, i'll be glad to help being your beta tester!!!!
If you need the stock rom, download it from this site: https://samsung-firmware.org/model/SM-J120H/
Thanks!

I tried this on a SM-J120M from Colombia.
Recocvery flashed OK, phone rebooted.
Turned it off, tried to enter recovery, android robot appears "installing system update" or something like that.
After a few seconds, standard recovery appears and not TWRP.
So I figured that the stock rom somehow replaces the custom recovery at first boot.
Flashed again but after Odin finished, I pulled the battery at once.
Tried again to enter recovery, this time a red text above the J1 logo shows "Recovery is not seandroid enforcing"
Pulled the battery again and turned on, phone booted normally, but twrp recovery was again replaced with standard recovery.
I'm on the latest firmware and this phone until now can not be rooted and no custom recovery seems to be available.
Somehow "knox" was set to 1 in the process, meaning warranty void.
Cheers.

Well, this has been tackled finally
Key issue was the right TWRP recovery.
Someone on Youtube posted the instructions and files titled: RECOVERY TWRP PARA SAMSUNG J1 2016 (TODAS LAS VERSIONES)
This time the TWRP recovery did work, after that I flashed the SuperSu from TWRP and all was finished.
Next I'll be looking for a custom rom, but so far very happy with the results.
Cheers.

Hello,
Could I have a link to the files that work for the J120M? I have the same phone and I think I found what you're talking about but I have the same issue with the stock recovery showing up instead.
Thanks!
EDIT: Actually, do I need to use TWRP? Can't I just "install update from external storage" with the stock bootloader?

Sure, I didn't post the link because it may not be allowed on this board (for newbies like me).
If you just put that title in Youtube it shows as the first result.
Anyway, here is the direct link for all the files:
Code:
https://www.datafilehost.com/d/296cd14c
Disable the download manager that is checked by default.
Use odin to flash TWRP, disable auto reboot and after flashing enter recovery at once with vol up+home+power buttons.
You may get a warning in red about recovery not enforcing blaba, just wait until TWRP shows and release the buttons.
It's not possible to flash SuperSU from stock recovery, you need a custom recovery like TWRP.
I couldn't find CWM for this phone, but anyway I like TWRP more.
Cheers.

Ahh, thanks! As it turns out I did find the correct link, but the trick was to immediately enter into recovery mode after flashing without letting the phone fully boot first. Got my phone rooted now, thanks a bunch!

This method workin on 100%/ Thanks!

This file is for Spreadtrum 3G devices. OTG not working at all. FOr ext card, try to wipe data and cache after install and reboot.

tried it on my SM-J120G, but failed .. all steps completed but when i started the phone in recovery mod, it got stuck at j1 2016 logo and a message in red fonts saying ''RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING''. After i just tried to switch off and on, but the screen dosent respond. After holding all physical button, vol up-dn, power and home, it got restarted in normal mode.

please give me device tree of this device .. please

Does it works in sm-j120G??

11) Power it off again.
12) Put the phone in recovery mode.
Hold down Power, Volume Up and Home when the device is turned off and unplugged and release once you see the Samsung logo.

UN-ROOTING USING PC ODIN
MAKE SURE YOUR PHONE’S 80% CHARGE OR ABOVE!!!
1) Make sure your phone is in DOWNLOAD MODE.
Power OFF your phone if you haven't done so.
Press Volume Down + Home Button + Power Button.
You will see a screen saying “Warning!”
Just ignore what it says and PRESS the Volume Up button.
2) Now, connect the phone to your Windows computer/laptop.
Connect the USB cable to your phone first then to your computer.
Let it detect your phone.
3) Extract both files (Odin & Stock Rom) to your Desktop.
Double-click on the Odin executable file and it’ll launch.

9) You have successfully un-rooted your S3!
Credit goes to @SeyMedia for original aid, I just made this into a tutorial. Good Luck!:good:
root/recovery won't work that way for 4.4
as soon as you let the phone reboot into system after flashing custom recovery, it will get overwritten by original one; so after you turn the phone off and reboot manually then, don't be surprised to see stock recovery
After flashing custom recovery don't turn the phone on. Just return with 3combo to recovery and flash su. This is how worked for me
Regarding the rooting process:
- just untick F. Reset Time in Odin when you flash philz_touch_6.26.6-i9305.tar;
- when flashing is done, disconnect phone from pc and pull up the battery for a few seconds;
- put back the battery;
- enter in recovery mode (you will enter in Philz Touch);
- flash UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.02.
This will do the trick!

1. The only option ticked in Odin should be F. Reset Time - NO "Restart"!!!!!
2. Flash with no automatic reboot.
3. Without rebooting the device after flashing TWRP (!!!!), you have to boot into TWRP recovery in a special way (!!!!).
To do this, press and hold Volume Down + Home + Power key on your device,
as soon as the screen goes black, immediately switch the key from Volume Down to Volume Up
while having the Power + Home Key pressed.
This will take you to the TWRP recovery.
It worked for me
Then afterwards you always get to TWRP.
Could this method Work on a Sprint Note5? I dont feel very confident to downgradr to Marshmallow.

Fist of all make sure you have enabled OEM bootloader unlock in developer options, if its not enabled it will always give you fail on Odin. After its enabled just download twrp flash image from 1st post and flash it, the img file should be in .tar format not the asc one. Also make sure to untick Auto-reboot option in Odin.
is it same method MM

[Guide] Comprehensive T380 (Tab A 2017 8.0) root guide

Disclaimer: Do it with your own risk. Knox will be tripped!!!
DO NOT REBOOT THE UNIT AFTER ROOTED FOR AT LEAST 7 DAYS UNTIL OEM UNLOCK OPTION SHOWS UP AGAIN!!! Failure to do it will result losing root and you have to wait 7 days.
Preparation:
1. Install Samsung Smart Switch on host PC and unit to backup data and install required driver
2. ADB should be installed
3. Download Magisk and copy onto memory card.
4. Download Odin
5. Download TWRP from @ashyx and locate it to where Odin can be found. https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...t-samsung-tab-8-0-2017-root-tutorial-t3730905
6. (Recommended) Download full ROM from sammobile.com just in case you need it with Odin. Model, version, and CSC should match your model.
7. There's a 7 day waiting to have OEM Unlock option shows up. This is a required step, and you have to wait 7 days after factory reset.
Operation:
1. Backup data with Smart Switch to both memory card and your host PC
2. Enter Download Mode
Use adb command
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
or Turn the unit off, and press and hold Home+Volume Down+Power
3. Make sure Auto Reboot disabled on Odin
4. Flash TWRP on AP slot.
5. Enter TWRP
You have to press and hold Volume Down+Power to reset, and as soon as the screen goes blank, press and hold Volume Up+Power. If you failed to do it, let the tablet boots normally and turn it off. After it's turned off, press and hold Home+Volume Up+Power to enter TWRP.
6. Format Data
This is a critical step to make sure root installed properly. On TWRP main screen, go to Wipe and Format Data and answer yes. After formatting, go back to main screen and choose reboot and reboot recovery
7. Install root of your choice
When you're back to TWRP, you can install root of your choice. Make sure it's copied onto memory card so you can install. You should see no error (no red line). Wipe cache if you want.
8. Reboot to system
It may take 10-15 minutes, and you will see Samsung flashes. Don't worry. You will see the initial setup screen and finish it.
9. Check root
For Magisk, you should see two checks. Make sure you install Safety Net check to complete.
10. Restore data
Congratulations! Your T380 is successfully rooted.
(Optional but recommended)
After rooted, use your root file explorer and do the following:
1. Edit build.prop
Change ro.security.vaultkeeper.feature=1 from 1 to 0
2. Remove RLC folder
Delete /system/priv-app/Rlc
There isn't any way of bypassing OEM unlock? I have this tab new and I want to be rooted now....

it did the same to me, I found another way of causing it to come up and immediatly (providing the 7 days have passed).
I tried setting time and date forward and that did nothing at all as if the tablet knew it was being tricked.
i did that on the 4th day as I too was impatient, set it forward 1 month and nothing.
then after 8 days it still hadn't shown up, so i connected to wifi and then went to settings, general management, date and time, flipped the automatic date and time to off and then back on again, rebooted the device (wifi still on when i rebooted) and then went to settings, developer options and it was visible.
hasn't helped me though, i still can't get my tablet to take TWRP.
Buying this tablet for someone as a gift but planned to root it first. Anything you guys would recommend as must have after root? And what would you recommend removing straight away?

Titanium Backup Pro, RootExplorer, Rootbooter, about all you need for rooted tools and utilities really.
root booter is optional but it saves the finger gymnastics getting into TWRP.
I rooted one of these had it rooted for over a week and lost root on it, be very careful with this model, it can be very touchy, nice tablet though really.
For Oreo you need a custom kernel for full root because of Samsung Defex
Worked great!
This worked perfectly! Thank you so much. Wish it was as easy to root my S9+.
CSC?

hello -
when you rooted, did you download firmware and if so how did you determine CSC?
mingkee said:

Thank you for posting this guide. I followed all steps exactly as written; installed magisk; obtained root. Problem is that when in TWRP I cannot mount data. External SD mounts fine, but internal storage reads 0MB. My device is T380 (2017) Oreo 8.1 . Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have the same issue and when I did try to do the optional recommended steps I couldn't find either step in build.prop or system folder.
Magisk Install Error
Doing just as you say, I got TWRP to take just fine but Magisk Manager reports that no Root is installed. The only red line I saw while installing Magisk simply said 'E:' and that's all... Any ideas out there why I'm getting that error?

I have used a method where you remove the sim card (If your device has one) factory reset the device, then set it up without a sim card or connecting to the internet, then turn on developer options, then conntent to wifi or insternet a wrking sim card, then restart, than the opiton should be there
Magisk is not installed in Magisk Manager after flash with TWRP
hello, I've followed your instructions on how to root and everything seems to be fine and dandy at first, redlines during Magisk installation with TWRP and so on, exactly like your instructions. however after I finished flashing Magisk for root, I boot up my tab and when I want to check if my Magisk is flashed or not using Magisk Manager, it said that my Magisk wasn't installed/flashed? so then I checked with root checker to see if I have root access or not, and turns out I still don't have the root access/root is not installed, even though I clearly just flash magisk into my tab using twrp.
I've been searching for an entire day to find solution online but to no avail whatsoever.... and now I have a bad headache trying to figure out what iv'e been doing wrong during the flash process... yes I have OEM unlocked, yes I have USB Debugging checked during twrp flash using odin, yes I format under wipe option in twrp before flash Magisk. please help....
anyone know how to boot into twrp on the actual sm-t380?

For posterity if no longer for DaricDarkFox:
- Boot to TWRP from power-off using Power and Vol+ (Download Mode is Power and Vol-, TWRP is Power and Vol+)
- Boot from a running system by selecting Restart and then quickly pressing and holding Vol+ (nothing else, just Vol+)
- Boot to TWRP from Download Mode by pressing Power and Vol- (as usual to exit Download Mode) and when screen goes blank, quickly release Vol- (but still holding Power) and press and hold Vol+
All of these methods consistently work for me. Most guidance for the T380 says to also press and hold the Home button, but (again for me at least) the Home button is not needed at all.

Found a way to root with magisk and Odin.

Hi guys while searching the web and the forum to find a way to root our phone I found this guide https://topjohnwu.github.io/Magisk/samsung
you can do it by yourself if you want but I thought to edit it a bit to match our device. all credit goes to original developer I just copied what he did and it worked.
I don't take any responsibility if anything happens to device, brick ect. use the guide with your own risk!
make sure you have updated drivers and a good usb cable, I recommend Smart Switch for pc you can download in the samsung site, it will also install latest drivers and you can back up the phone with it to the pc.
just for your information rooting voids the waranty, trips knox and makes things complicated, but I can't have a phone without root, it reminds me the days with my old nexus 4.
this guide will also factory reset your phone so make sure to back up everything don't forget to back up whatsapp in the app itself.
I'm not a developer maybe there is an easier way to root, this is the only way I found, so if you want to wait until an experienced developer who knows english better then me release another way to root that's fine by me, I wont get upset.
the only downside I see in this kind of root that you can't normally enter the system. I mean that normal reboot and power up will boot your system without magisk, because the root sits on the recovery or something like that. so each time you power off your phone to power it up you need to hold the Volume up + Power button untill you see the bootloader unlocked warning and release, and everything will be working with root. even if you accidently powerd your phone without the way I mentioned you still have root don't panic like I did just turn off the phone and power it up like I mentioned and its all good.
also you can't normally update the phone through the phone settings and to update the phone with odin like I understand you'll need to have a patched version of the AP tar file with magisk, or something bad will happen to the phone, again I am not a developer I don't know the full risks.
so after the warnings and the long intro here is the edited guide:
Unlock the bootloader - this will wipe all your data so make sure to back up before you start anything!
Allow bootloader unlocking in Developer options → OEM unlocking
Power off your device. Volume Up + Volume Down + Power button and plug in your device to a PC to boot into download mode
Long press volume up to unlock the bootloader. This will wipe your data and automatically reboot.
the developer also mentions that sometimes it wont work because something called VaultKeeper. I didn't had that issue just make sure after the system boots after you unlocked the bootloader that the OEM unlocking option exists and grayed out in the developer options.
Instruction
1.Download the firmware for your device.
2.Unzip the firmware and copy the AP tar file to your device. It is normally named as AP_[device_model_sw_ver].tar.md5
3.Install Magisk Manager from the Canary Channel
4.In Magisk Manager: Install → Install → Select and Patch a File
5.Select the AP tar file. Magisk Manager will patch the whole firmware file and store the output to [Internal Storage]/Download/magisk_patched.tar
6.Copy the tar file to your PC, and boot your device to download mode. (Hold all 3 buttons Volume Up+Volume Down+Power Button and connect to PC cable)
I have downloaded the firmware with Samfirm I found it on the forum I'll upload it here. I will also upload the AP file I patched and write the firmware version I took it from. I'll also upload the full firmware for you if you can't find a good mirror online. and also the odin version I used.
the csc i look up is for ILO but I think the csc have multiple regions, you know better I'll upload it anyway maybe it will save time for someone.
7.Flash magisk_patched.tar as AP in ODIN (I flashed the entire firmware because I had some problems flashing without all the files try it the way you want. flash it with normal csc of you choose to flash the whol firmware)
Important: Uncheck “Auto Reboot” in Options!!!!
8.Magisk is now successfully flashed to your device! But there are still several steps before you can properly use the device.
9.We now want to boot into the stock recovery to factory reset our device.
Full data wipe is mandatory! Do not skip this step.
Press Power Button+Volume Up+Volume Down to exit download mode, and as soon as the screen turns off, immediately press Power Button+Volume Up to boot to recovery partition. Just as mentioned in the previous section, since we want to boot into stock recovery, continue pressing the volume up button until you see the stock recovery screen.
10.In the stock recovery menu, use volume buttons to navigate through menus, and the power button to select the option. Select Wipe data/factory reset to wipe the data of the device.
11.This time, we can finally boot to the system with Magisk. Select Reboot system now, and immediately press Power Button+ Volume Up. After seeing the bootloader warning screen, release all buttons so it can boot to the system.
12.The device will automatically reboot for the first time it boots. This is completely normal and done by design.
13.After the device is booted up, do the usual initial setup. The following steps will need internet connection.
14.You shall see Magisk Manager in your app drawer; if not, manually install the APK you downloaded in step 3 and continue to the next step. The app would be a stub and it shall automatically upgrade to the full Magisk Manager when you open it.
15.Magisk Manager will ask to do additional setups. Let it do its job and the app will automatically reboot your device.
16.Baruh Ashem! enjoy magsik!
That's it I think if I forgot something I'm sorry I hope it worked for you! and maybe some real developers start to look at the device and start building costume roms andall the good stuff that comes with it!
meanwhile the files are uploading you can try get them by yourself here are the names of the files I used:
Odin3_v3.13.1_3B_PatcheD
Samfirm
firmware file: SM-A705FN_1_20190412140953_u5ql0uali6_fac
Magisk manager is linked the developer enterd the canary build but I'll also upload 7.1.2.apk version I found on the internet.
ALL CREDIT GOES TO THE ORIGINAL DEVELOPER, AND DEVELOPERS. if you have any question I can help you with my own expirence only.
Here is the download link, use at your own risk. if you are not sure the firmware uploaded is right for your device download yourself with samfirm that i also uploaded.

Thanks for your research and this manual! I've been trying your steps for a few hours now, and after a few trial and errors, softbricks and reboots I'm still not able to succeed.
Magisk Manager won't show up in the apps after setup wizard. Installing it manually, it says Magisk is not installed
My phone: A70 from the Netherlands. I used Israel firmware from updato.com (https://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model?record=440E12D670B911E9BE8CFA163EE8F90B) and your file (which is same size after patching). Unfortunately I can't find Dutch firmware, hence the Israel version.
Anybody else succeeded?

I have good hope that this device can be rooted considering my past Samsung devices, it is only a matter or time.
I'm downloading the files again now, and going to try! Will report back a.s.a.p.
Edit:
Installed everyhing from your files in Odin: BL, AP (patched), CP, CSC and:
It worked! Magisk installed, Magisk Manager updated. I could install AdAway and it asked for root permissions.
But... after reboot Magisk Manager said it is NOT installed anymore. Now what?
Edit 2:
It seems Magisk sometimes fails to load when booting. After some reboots, it is back again and AdAway works. So end of the story: IT WORKS, and it Magisk starts to nag that is it not installed, just reboot a couple of times, and enjoy your rooted phone

Yay I'm happy it worked!
Magisk isn't loading because of you want to boot with magisk you need to hold the volume up and power button together untill you see the bootloader unlocked warning and it asks your to press the power button to continue then release press the power button. I usually press volume up and power button again for 2 sec to make sure and that's it! Reboot won't boot with magisk sure make sure u use this method each time you need to reboot!

It's not that bad, even if you accidentally booted without magisk just turn off the phone and boot with the way I mentioned and magisk is back!
If you normally power up your phone just pressing the power button with this method just add the volume up and hold both button together for 4 to 5 sec.
Right now it's the only way to root that I found. Maybe with twrp things will get easier.
And one more thing if you install magisk module don't press reboot after your install just power off and boot the way I mentioned that's it.

I tested a few reboots, and this is how my A70 behaves:
X Reboot without pressing any buttons: no Magisk
X Reboot, pressing the power button when prompted: no Magisk
V Reboot, hold power button + volume up button, press power button to confirm: Magisk :victory:
Well, that's good enough for me! I am happy

Yeah that's right my English is not perfect maybe I didn't explained it good enough but that's what I meant! Thank you for trying. That's good enough for me also.
I also installed EdExposed and it's working good with modules that are confirmed to work with Android pie.
Next thing is trying to flash mods with flashify or something because we don't have twrp yet.
There is more good news!
I got EdXposed working following this manual, using the SandHook version: https://magiskroot.net/download-xposed-for-android-pie
It was really easy, just download and flash/install these files:
Links:
Riru core: https://github.com/RikkaApps/Riru/releases

EdXposed Installer: https://github.com/solohsu/XposedInstaller/releases/tag/Ed_v2.2.4
Don't forget to reboot with the button combination trick mentioned earlier!

If it failed maybe magisk didn't patched AP correctly try to extract the AP file again from the firmware file and then patch it in magisk again.
I extract with 7zip and got all ok in magisk. Newest 214 build.
But got success 0 fail 1 as result
Can't be ok like this?

Extract the zip file I added to the folder and open the Frija software. Download your firmware by entering the version and model of your device and the code of the country where the device is registered. Copy the AP file and paste it on your device. Open magisk manager app and tap install. Patch the AP file. When the process is finished, you can transfer the tar file named magik pacthed in the download folder to the AP section via odin, the file starting with the BL you downloaded with the Frija software, to the BL section, etc. Select HOME CSC in the USERDATA section, if you do not want your information to be deleted. Turn off your device, press the volume down, volume up and power button at the same time, and when the screen turns black, remove your finger from the power button and put it into download mode. Before starting the installation from the Odin software, deselect the Automatic Restart option in the Odin software options section and try to Start. When you get the AVB (fail) error, press the volume down, volume up and power button at the same time, and when the screen turns black, remove your finger from the power button and enter the download again. Deselect the AP partition, click Start again and wait. After installing the device, disconnect the cable and install Magisk Manager, if it does not stop. reboot if prompted. and now your device is rooted.
