Short answer: Yes and No.
Long answer: You can, if you have unlocked bootloader.
Just simply flash any stock 4.4.4 kernel, flash DualRecovery and SuperSU.
Then flash back only kernel from original FTF. (you can do this by checking exlude on everything else that isn't kernel)
Boom, root.
Keep it mind to NOT INSTALL XPOSED. Even the alpha, doesn't ALWAYS work on sony FW, we still debugging that.
Hope it helps.
if i have recovery but locked bootloader can i just simply flash superuser or it will brick my z1?

*INSTALL NUT'S DUAL RECOVERY*
That's has nothing to do with SELinux, is just Sony RIC process that is not killed.
RIC protects system partition from write.
The NUT's Dual Recovery can kill it at boot time.

*** FIRST OF ALL, MAKE SURE YOU FULL FLASHED THE FTF FIRMWARE, NO ZIP FILES, FTF FULL ***
1) Download the latest SuperSU flashable zip and place it on you internal memory / sdcard (SuperSU Latest: http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu )
2) Download the latest XZDR *flashable* file (XZDR: http://nut.xperia-files.com/ )
2) Power off the phone
3) Fastboot a 4.4.4 custom stock kernel, like TrinityFX one. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z1/development/kernel-fxtrinityultimatekernel-fast-t2801620)
4) Then, power on the device to recovery and flash the SuperSU zip file and XZDR file
5) Power off the phone (either by recovery or keeping pressed power + vol up)

Thanks to you, now I have a rooted a1
Update: had some trouble with supersu but now everything is okay. I think even after uninstalling kingroot apps they prevent supersu from updating the binary. I solved that by flashing latest beta of supersu which is 2.49, so I suggest you to attach that instead of version 2.46. Also I suggest you to attach rashr instead of flashify

Huh? On what terms you're referring?
Like flashing / wiping etc?
Yeah, Philz took some more time than TWRP in the terms of flashing, wiping, etc....
BTW, TWRP is faster than Philz, I would like to suggest you TWRP.
Meantime, I ain't blaming /degrading Philz.. It's the stable recovery we ever got.
I was also a Philz user, but shifted to TWRP Since then...
You know, TWRP got new features like ota installer and etc, which makes you flashing OTA's on the go simple.
Use this TWRP - https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24562946973632081

Lenovo Z5s Update to ZUI 11.5 (Android 10)

Disclaimer: No guarantees. Follow at your own risk. I am not responsible for bricked phones.
Credits to 4PDA
Prerequisites:
Knowledge of OEM unlocking from Developer options, adb, and fastboot
Knowledge of QPST in case you encounter bootloop, so you can revert to a reliable stock ROM
Unlocked bootloader (from here)
1) Get your bootloader unlocked, if you haven't already.
- Visit https://www.zui.com/iunlock
- Enter the IMEI1 (Second number when you call *#06# with the phone)
- Enter the Device ID from the Bootloader/Fastboot (Hold VOL- and Power, while device is off)
- Enter your email and captcha and set the checkmark to acknowledge voiding your warranty.
- If you get an error saying that your IMEI1 is wrong, put in a sim card and wait a few hours. If it still doesn't work, write an email to [email protected]
- In the developer settings in android, enable usb debugging and oem unlock.
- Flash the sn.img file you receive with fastboot (again, hold vol- and power while the device is off). Command is 'fastboot flash unlock sn.img'. You need compatible usb drivers, qualcom drivers and adb/fastboot to do that. Use google or write me a PM if you have trouble with that.
- execute 'fastboot oem unlock-go'
- This allows you to use fastboot to flash custom system/boot/vendor/vbmeta images

In order not to encrypt Data in the future, install Official TWRP immediately after installing updates. Install > Install Image > twrp-3.3.1-0-jd2019.img
Install GApps
Note: I do not know if the 11.5 update relocks the bootloader. It doesn't lock the bootloader.
I had bootloop from OpenGApps. 4PDA post advises to use BiTGApps. You can install Google Play Store from the built-in Lenovo App Center and that's what I did.
Haven't tried disabling dm-verity and forceencrypt.
Good job, my man, I'll check it out tonight and prepare ourselves an updateable package for people coming from any rom to avoid the hassle of going through all of that. As soon as I get it working will release a new TWRP for Android 10.

So I tried changing the link provided in the first email http://cdn.zui.lenovomm.com/developer/lenovoboot/xxxxxxxx/sn.img (xxxxxxxx - serial number of phone) and it worked. Try to download the official Mi flash tool and flash the fastboot miui rom in fastboot mode. The method which you're following is used for hard brick device that cant get into fastboot mode.
get another flashtool and download bypass auth.
if imei null or error.
i managed to make 2 imei redmi 9.
1. unlock bootloader, flash rom eng!!! or assembled rom.
2. After completing write IMEI using Maumeta version 10.
3. install twrp and backup nvram and nvdata on rom eng!!!, copy the twrp backup results to the computer.
4. flash format & download global rom, then unlock bootloader again, turn on the phone until the start menu, then turn off the phone and install twrp, then put the backup results into twrp and restore, then install the kernel from strombreaker v1.0, when finished immediately reboot the system.
goodluck, it worked 1000%
Is it important to the install kernel ?

Sorry I can't reply because my account was hacked.
to write 2 imei you must use kernel,
on boot if not use kernel custom Redmi9 will bootloop,
if you want to use 1 imei my advice use version 11.0.4.0 better in communication.

Thank you for your work Akhil99! It's very much appreciated.
I had no trouble installing it, following your guide. Gonna wait installing the Android 12 update till a new TWRP version is available for it.
