battery life - Sony Xperia X Performance Questions & Answers

So, i bought XP few weeks ago, comming from z3.
I am very disappointed from the battery, compared to z3.
Want to ask you how many SOT you have, cos when i'm outside using lte i barely make like 3,5 SOT. Even dont have facebook app to drain the battery.
For 5min telegram chat it goes down with 2%.
Thats why wanted to ask you guys hows your battery life because i'm starting to thinking that my device is faulty or deffect.
Please share your thoughts on that, for 4 hours from 100 it went to 75now with only 30mins SOT

Might be a factory defect, my Xperia x performance always reaches a little bit over 5 hours of screen on time.

Have you seen details on battery usage?
Anyway, I can say that battery lives on Z3+,Z5,Z5 Premium are no match for Z3. See battey test on GSMARENA and you will see that XP got a lot less number compare to Z3 as well.

Yeah, sure its 400mah difference between z3 and xp, but still i think something is wrong, may be on wi fi only i can make 4,5-5h SOT but on lte, impossible.
Here some screenshots from today, took it around 9am from the charger

It doesn't have the WiFi bug that the xa had on release by any chance. Not letting the device reach sleep properly, workaround is to turn off scanning always available inc when screen is off in settings WiFi advanced. It's since been fixed on the xa with a update appently, I'm still waiting on the update to hit the UK

When i browse the web, or just chat it goes down very fast, draining as hell. Phone gets warm only from browsing and chat, here is 35degrees, but still i'm not using it against the sun, even now since i type this it went with 1% down from the beginning of the post writing wich is basically 2-3mins.
So when i use the phone w screen on then its the draining. My wi fi is off now i'm outside

Many people suffer battery drain from Google service (especially when they're using WiFi). However, I dont see anything suspicious from your picture except your signal strength. Very low signal strength would drain your battery real fast as well. I suggest you turning off cellular signal for a day, use only WiFi, and then see your battery consumptiom at the end of the day.
Another thing I would like to mention is battery capacity. Z3 and Z3+ has battery different of 150 mAh but from my personal experience Z3+ would last around 60% of what Z3 could. Its not only about battery itself, its also about what Sony managed on the kernel level to optimize power consumption. Sody has done very bad on this since snapdragon 810 era.

I made a soft reset, will see if there is any difference afrer 2-3 charging cycles.
Another thing is i'm living in Bulgaria, here my operator just introduced the LTE, so the network i s*** may be thats the case will listen to your advice. And try 1day without a cellular.

5 hours of almost continuous use, some of them using battery intense apps and games like Pokémon Go, most of it just reading stuff on Chrome at 50% screen illuminating consumes around 50% of battery for me. So if you're losing 98% charge iin 5 minutes, your phone probably suffers from some kind factory defect.

In 5-6 mins use SOT(browsing and checking instagram i'm loosing exactly 1-2% if i'm outside lets say 3%max if the screen need to be full brightness, hows yours?
Dont play pokemon, even dont have fb app, only instagram, shazam, telegram, viber and whatsapp and chrome.

Go to settings location tap the three dots top right then turn both the sliders to the off position WiFi and Bluetooth are scanning in the background even if they are both turned off in main settings. Makes a huge difference to the battery life on my xa.

Thanks, but allready done that, maximum i achieved 3h 38m SOT from 9am till 11pm, with LTE mostly, on wi fi i believe i can make 4hours SOT

I think battery capacity is the culprit that 400 is a big difference i used z5 premium and i got 4hrs sot only they should put there 3000 to 3200 mah on 5 inch screen Hope they fix their design im starting to dislike sony

I am testing as well at the moment. I hardly manage to get through the day. I am still investigating as it is quite hard without root. That was yesterday.

I couldn't agree more styxter! The capacity is TOO small on the XP!

I couldn't agree more Ice! I too came from a Z3, and the battery life on my XP is really disappointing. The 2 day battery life promise DIED IMO when the Z series ended. These new batteries suck. lol Way too small. The XP I saw was rated as having the WORST battery life of any 2016 flagship (even less than XZ's) AND the longest charging time. Kind makes me wish I'd waited for the XZ. lol Or just got the HTC 10 maybe, which lasts 70 minutes longer than the XP can. But XP and XZ have the better camera, so tough call. Camera or battery life? If HTC 11 bumps up the camera (10's was very good to great but XP's is excellent) another notch over 10, I may be switching back to HTC (used to have the One M8).
I have uninstalled or disabled the majority of bloatware including the Facebook app, but still. One day 6 weeks ago I had to leave early so was on a train by 6am. Even after enabling Stamina Mode and turning off phone 2-3 times over the day, by like 8 or 9pm that night, I was down to 5%! That is awful man. lol I'm really getting fed up with Sony and their BS, even though I do love my phone overall. But battery life is a major factor for me, as is camera and performance.

I hope they do Ice, but I have little faith a software update is gonna make any real difference vs. the other 2016 flagship competition. And if it does, it will probably improve the competition's battery life too..............aka, very little difference. But I'll take whatever they can give me I guess. Not even sure if I will still be with Sony next year. DEF keeping my eyes on LG and HTC, who both currently have better battery life too than the XP and even the XZ (and lower charging times too).
Well, what's sad is despite the XZ's larger battery capacity, it's STILL only the SECOND worst on battery life vs. the 2016 flagship competition's, right behind the XP. lol I believe it only has like 30-40 min over the XP at best. Where the HTC 10 for example has a solid 70 min over the XP. And that's still on the low end, but at least there's a lot LESS BS when it comes to HTC phones than Sony's (though Sony's still have the slightly better camera, but that may not be the case with the 11 next year). And the audio quality and volume of the 10 def seems superior to what Sony is giving us these days vs. the competition. 2 years ago, it was much more equal, but in 2016, HTC took a big step forward while Sony seems to have taken 1-2 steps back. See my threads on Head-Fi for more on that (if you wish) here and here.

as it has a bright screen, I find that using a black theme and customize as much apps to black helps. Normally it can last a full day and it will have 30 percent left. I'm not a heavy user though.

Guys tell me about the battery i want this phone but i need battery that last at least full day sorry for my bad english

If you turn your brightness to 1/4, no gps, no bluetooth, you'll make it through te day with like 5 hours SOT.

[Q] incredible S battery life

hey guys, hows your battery doing with heavy usage ?
and whats the idle power draw with screen off? because desire s has 20 mah... thats not exatcly right.. should be 6-7 mah tops imo.
Yup, power draw shows most on the display on mine too. Wonder why, but the battery life is kinda good though.

well tbh that wasnt exatcly the question. its kind of obvious the display uses most power
but how long does it last on lets say heavy usage ? and the other thing- what is the power draw with the screen OFF ? in mah

Had a couple of boring days at work, and managed to take at least 80% of the battery life in a 8 hour day with moderate to heavy use.
Not as good as the iphone 4 I had before, but better than the Desire, Galaxy S etc... decent but not mindblowing battery life.
Excuse me for my bad English
I think the battery is consumed by heavy programs or let's say programs consume battery like Live Wallpaper.
Live Wallpapers consume a lot of battery that many experts say don't use it if you don't want it.
I didn't buy the phone yet but I will after two weeks.

Gladly reporting that the battery life on the IS is extremely satisfactory considering the display and other capabilities.
Got the phone a couple of days back, the first day i charged fully.
The usual setting up of the phone, bluetooth transfers, internet via 3g & wi-fi, gaming, and of course the regualr calls & sms.
The battery lasted me over 13 hours.. still had 14% when i decided to charge again.
now with the usage a little lesser that the excitement has gone down a tad bit, the battery is really efficient.
close to a day (maybe more) with above average usage.
btw, also noticed the battery usage does not seem to vary much with the usage of any task killers

My battery life so far has been pretty good, my old iphone used to die mid/late afternoon with the sort of usage I put my IS through yesterday (first charge)
Went to work around 8 am, checking emails and facebook every 30 minutes aswell as texting on and off all day. Watched movies and listened to music through lunch hour, downloaded apps. Continued the same as the morning through the afternoon.
Got home and was on it constantly (ebuddy, doubletwist, facebook, market) from 5 till around midnight when it finally died.
Very happy with it.

and lol ! if you did all that on the first charge of the phone ... you do know that the battery life increases significantly after a few weeks of usage ?

I simply can not get good battery life with this phone!

I've been a 32GB unlocked HTC One owner since day one. Battery life for me has been very mediocre, barely enough to make it through a work day with light to moderate usage. For some reason this phone drains so much on standby it's ridiculous. Last week I finally gave in and decided to root. I've found that standby still sucks but the screen uses less power so I can get more screen on time on average. I'm running InsertCoin with ElementalX kernel and for every hour of standby I lose ~3+ percent of battery! I'm not even using the phone! I have EVERY APP on my phone Greenified, Google Search, Gmail, and Play Music uninstalled, I have the phone undervolted and monitor everything with Wakelock Detector and GSAM. Nothing looks weird to me but for some reason my standby still sucks. I've literally crippled my phone and have all location services turned off and I still can't get good standby time. My iPhone 5 could last forever on standby, literally 3-5 hours without losing a single percent. I've been using Android for years and the only phone that got GOOD battery life was the Note 2. At this point I'm considering going back to it because I'm sick of micromanaging my phone and still not getting good results.
Is anyone else having similar issues? There are some people here getting 6+ hours on screen time with ridiculous numbers like 38 hours without a charge. I can't get anywhere near that even with the screen on the dimmest settings. I don't understand how there's so much variation in battery life. I don't play any games or watch movies on the phone, just simple social networking and music for 30 minutes a day.
The HTC one isn't the best phone when it comes to standby time but still,I find battery life to be pretty good, super easy to get through a work day. Maybe you have an app that is running in the background and draining your battery. Install betterbatterystats and try monitoring your apps. That's all I can think of. Also take a look at the battery stats thread and see if folks can help you there.

As you are well aware, there can be a myriad of causes. I just want to recount one example where I made a settings adjustment which cut my battery life by over half. I doubt very much this is the reason for your poor battery life but perhaps others may benefit.
About a month ago I purchased a brand new router. Being a tinkerer, I was fiddling with this and that on the router trying to optimize everything. I also played with the phone and amongst various settings I decided to turn on "best wifi performance". The One has the warning about "may consume more power", but I did not think much about it as I knew I had very good battery life and believed that a bit more power would probably not change matters that much.
Later on in the evening I saw that my battery life was horrendous and I started scratching my head as to why it had gone to hell in a hand basket. Finally, I recalled that I had adjusted "best wifi performance" and did a search on this and found a thread on another forum.
I turned it off, recharged my phone and followed battery life keenly. 24 hours later, I could see that my battery life had returned to normal (normal being between 4-6 hours of screen on time over the duration of a full charge).
Interested if the mods will lock this thread in that they may feel that this should fall under the battery stats thread.

Battery life of the One is pretty good for most people but there are some issues for some of us and lately some apps have updated and introduced even more bugs causing drain, I'll list some of the causes I found:
-msm_hsic_host wakelock bug on kernels pre- android 4.2.2
-location bug in google play store 4.1.6, fixed in 4.1.10
-whatsapp post juli 1st update (and the one before)
-htc usage reporting (on by default on s-off devices)
-reporting location setting on (in maps)
-some sim cards might not work to well which cause more frequents wake up (eg. in the netherlands vodafone sim cards with a serial number starting with 7 )
to properly debug you need wakelock detector and better battery stats (free here for xda users, search for it)
Edit:Just got an update for Whatsapp (and Facebook and Skype all at once), let's hope it fixes the battery drain.....
Maybe undervolted too much.

Although I have pretty good battery life when screen on (~5-6 hours), I have noticed the same drain as you when phone is in standby. The only huge wakelock that I have found is called 10113, AudioOut_4 or system*wakelock* mediaserver. I know that this process is for audio output but its draining like 20% of my battery when standby I was wondering if you have noticed this same wakelock on your phone?
I whatsapp and check Twitter news apps sometime a game.
And i can do easy 12 hours max 17 with this usage .

I was just thinking of the good battery performance I've been getting from the handset so far funnily enough.
I think it's been very good after only a couple of days with it.
Been using it moderately to heavy and it's held up pretty well. Over 13 hours now. Maybe it's certain apps u are using that's giving u problems with high drainage.

I was having similiar problem with my HTC One tends to overheat a lot resulting in poor battery life. I tried every known tricks to get better battery life still no hope. Went to HTC Care in my area and told about the issue they immediately took it for repair (the phone was only one week old). After like waiting three days I got my phone and back there was a paper which describes about the repair Its said in the problem description "Display Abnormally and Battery Calibration issue" I dont know what they meant with display abnormally they really got fixed my battery life. Before I used to get 6 to 7 hours of battery life now I m averaging a day or two with moderate to light use. I m satisfied ! :good:

I think you misunderstand what overheat means. The HTC One does NOT overheat. You feel the heat more cos of it's metal body, which is releasing the heat through the metal surface. It's directing heat AWAY from the internals, unlike the S4 which uses the same chip and keeps all the heat inside cos plastic is a terrible heat transfer medium.

I know that but mine was like 48 C at the peak when its hot which is very uncomfortable to hold that's why I said overheat. Anyway now its fixed and I don't have any complaints.

new Xperia z and problem with battery

I've just bought Xperia z and everything seems to work fine except the battery life..
The battery had obviously problems (discharging while charging and playing a game)
so I went back to the store and the next day after they checked it out they replaced it..
The 2nd one hasn't shown yet that kind of problems but..
Just to be cautious I did some kind of test myshelf:
I charged while it was off, then turned it on and opened only one app chrome and started surfing online with Wifi (3g/4G all closed and no call made).
And while I was surfing I took note of the battery percentage from time to time..
So this is my "timeline":
95% 11:05
90% 11:20
89% 11:23
88% 11:25
77% 12:00
73% 12:27
...
Does this battery consumption looks normal? ( no other app except chrome and no external apps were installed)

1 1/2 hour of screen on losing about 20 percent of battery seems pretty normal to me.
Edit: i think its better than normal. I usually get less than 1 1/2 hour per 20 percent. Usually get 1 hour to 1 1/4 .
get betterBatteryStats !
The average screen on time is about 4hours. So you do the math. Looks pretty normal to me.

take note of your screen brightness, that one seems normal for an xperia z
Xperia Z drinks the battery pretty quick - I don't know however, if it's more power greedy than HTC One or Galaxy S4.
For the same reason do I have an external battery from Anker. It keeps my Z charged when I'm on the road.

Thats normal while browsing the web on wifi. The normal screen time while browsing on the xz is around 4hours with auto brigthness with no mods like lower voltage, etc.
I did find that dolphin browser is a little more battery friendly than chrome but even then dont expect much more out of the xz screen time on browsing web or watching movies or gamming.
the xperia z battery just sucks

"discharging while charging and playing a game" this is normal since Xperia charger is not that powerfull, you need 2 amp charger to do that (but it is not healthy for the phone, even xperia charger is not healthy enough)
Your timeline looks normal, surfing the web is not a simple task, there is a part when: cpu eats a lot of energy, gpu eats a lot of energy and screen and wifi module...

by my experience - Xperia Z battery is very good - the part that sucks is the problem of all batteries in the world which is not a battery itself - the problem is with power consumption, even when we reach a technology were batteries get 10x more power, someone will think - i know - lets put 10x more transistors in the cpu...

mine too - Nokia N95 8GB had like 2h 30m of on screen time, galaxy s 3h 40m
4 hours is pretty good considering that it is quad core 5 inch lte sdcard(this is just another device that needs power) monster

I always get more than 4 hours of screen on and can't really compare to other flagships as they have bigger battery than the Z except for HTC one.

Nexus 6 Battery - average or below average?

Today I took my phone off charge at 3.30pm, I'm on 50% with adaptive brightness off. My SOT is 2hrs 10mins, during which I've used WhatsApp, texted, used Chrome, played some music and YouTube videos, and played Temple Run for 20mins. I also have Facebook running, but I haven't used it. It's 7.45pm now, and my phone is at 51% with an estimated time of 5hrs remaining.
So that's 3.5hrs off charge, with about 2hrs SOT time, and I'm on 51%.
Does this sound average for the Nexus 6 or is my battery draining more so than normal?
That sounds way below average. I'm at 49% after 10 hours of heavy use. At least 2 hours internet and 45 min of talk time.

I have a super hard time believing that you had 10 hours of heavy use or we think heavy use are two different things.
To OP check out the battery life thread in general, could be a variety of rogue apps that are draining in background. If you don't turn things off I'm not surprised if you get around 4.5 hours of SOT
Is there a way to tell how many hours since charge? I just see that I have 12 hrs left
Yes, that is low in my opinion. On similar usage I typically get 6+ SOT 100% to 15%. Probably 75% WiFi, 25% LTE. Auto brightness.
This is about right. On my 3rd nexus 6 and they all exhibited the same behavior. I'm a heavy user as well and lucky if I get 5 hours sot. I had a short stint with a 6+ where I measured bit one day to give me a freakish 9.5hrs when I got down to 4%. I only hope things would get better for the battery as time passes. This is the perfect phone for me in every way except battery life.

You cant accurately measure SOT on iOS so I have a hard time believing this. I have several friends with the 6+ that barely get through the day here at my university, then again I can't vouch for what they do on their phones.

Its incredible battery wise and may be as a phone if you ca stomache iOs, i couldnt.

What I'm staying is unless you have a stopwatch and can reproduce it accurately then it's hard to prove. I'm not necessarily saying your wrong, but it's hard to believe an iPhone is getting that kind of battery life, especially from what I have seen.
Now I'm not saying it's impossible but it's not something you see everyday. Its hard to measure something like SOT accurately without a built in system setting or app monitoring it. You can see why I have doubt's, but I appreciate you posting your experience.
This question makes no sense, as every battery thread. Battery is subjective, there is no such thing as "average" battery life. It all depends on how you use your phone and how your phone is set up. Everybody has their own kind of apps, setups, carriers.
The better signal strength you have in terms of carrier cellular data, the better battery you'll have.
Depending on what you do on your phone determines battery life. Yeah you can have 6+ hours SOT, but if you play games or watch videos then your battery life will be different from everybody else. Does that mean you have "poor" battery life? No, you just put your phone to more heavy tasks that consumed more battery life.
The way I see battery life, if I was able to end the day without my phone going down to 0% then it did its job. If I have problems with battery life, I'm only 15 minutes away from a quick Turbo Charge up to ~60% or get a portable charger if you don't have access to a wall outlet.

No offense taken at all. Quite the opposite, i completely inderstand where you're coming from. I have doubts myself when someone says they're heavy users on nexus 6 and get 8hrs sot. Everyones usage is pretty unique to them and can shift their sot numbers considerably to either side.
That being said and that i got that out of the way lol, what I meant when i said I had a lot of time on my hand is that i really had a lot of time towaste, that 9.5hrs was spent in one sitting believe or not. Most of it was binging on Netflix and the remainder was browsing on safari. I pretty much use my Nexus 6 the same way where its strictly split between Netflix/yiutube and chrome. Most if it on Wifi.
I didn't install any apps on top of stock in either phone except for google maps on iOS and adaway/titanium/greenify on nexus 6. I use the browser for everything else like facebook etc. And i dont play any games on my phones. May be my sot on the 6+ would've been different if my usage was different, but for my use case and setup the 6+ had the much better battery life.
However i ended up going back to the nexus 6 because its the better phone overall imo. I just need to find a way to improve the battery. I was hoping greenify would help a lot, but it didnt help much so far. My galaxy nexus had horrid battery life BUT the battery was replaceable and that made all the difference in the world, whuch this phone sadly lacks.

I see, thank you for clarifying your usage. If you want better battery life I recommend trying Franco kernel with Vomer Tweaks. I had 7.5 hours SOT with 25% battery left before I flashed a updated ROM and made a TWRP backup. I could have easily made it to 8.5-9hours SOT, however it was already 2300 and I didn't feel like staring at my screen until 0100 just to see if I could get more SOT. My phone was on all day since 0730 that morning, including time I used Bluetooth for GP music at the gym and some casting to my Nexus Player. Good battery life is possible but as you said everyone is different.

Wow that sounds impressive and really all that i need as sot goes. I'll def read up on how to do it and give it a try. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the replies guys.
Okay, so went to bed, phone was at 79% battery. This morning it was about 74% or so. Been on Chrome checking stuff, it's dropped to about 65% in half an hour. Screen brightness is around 30%. WiFi on, half cellular signal. I'm not doing anything intensive. My SoT so far is 1hr 40mins. Standby time is 12hrs.
So tl;dr - dropped 5% over 12hrs on standby, then 9% in half an hour with the screen on at 30% brightness using mainly Chrome.
I guess am just a little concerned in case I have a defective battery or something. I've alrady had one replacement already due to the camera arriving damaged.
What do you guys think?

Sounds about right. 9% in half an hour would give you 5 hrs SOT, and thats about average.
If you were doing Franko kernel with volmer tweaks that would be low. They do a lot to slow processor down and reduce capability to save battery, but you probably wouldn't be able to tell except for the occasional lag while scrolling a web page.
I get about 3.5-4 hours SOT. Seems fine to me. I don't do anything whatsoever to save battery. I keep the screen brightness how I like it.

Edit: also I was only on WiFi for 40 minutes and LTE the rest of the time

I have to say I find the battery life to be outstanding if you are using the chinese rom. If using the global one it is really poor. There is another thread on here about battery life. Have a look at that
How much SOT on chinese rom?

In my opinion the chiense rom is much better although there are obviously some chinese apps there too
I'm reviewing the phone at the moment, my results on GeekBench 06:30:30 for runtime and a score of 3905 with the screen on maximum brightness. I've used the phone with dual-SIM and single-SIM and not struggled with it at all. MIUI 6.3.31 and it's the 64/3GB model. Hope that's of some help!
Battery life is usually good. SOT around 5 hrs for me and I usually play games.
However stand by is really odd one both the roms. Sometimes overnight it consumes 1%-3% sometime s 20%-25%, I still can't figure out why.
25% in night?? why?

Never seen that with mine. While at work during the day I only use it for the odd call and some texts along with a small amount of browsing. With the chinese rom I would have 85% charge left when I get home but with the global rom doing the same I would have about 65% left so clearly it wasnt going to sleep properly. Maybe thats what you are seeing

No, I haven't updated my signature from so long.
I have used nexus 5, galaxy s6(lost), lg g4 and oneplus 2 after Lg g2. For me galaxy s6 was the best device I have ever used.
Mi5 has a mediocre camera nothing exceptional about it xiaomi is creating hype about 4-axis and things however in reality it can't capture full hd video smoothly.
For sure Mi5 has better sound and battery and chipset but software wise I think any other phone out is better than this MIUI crap.
and believe me MIUI can never get fixed until and unless they changed their framework completely. As of now MIUI 7 is based on MM but it doesn't have a single feature of MM so what is the use of such OS. MIUI is for users who just want to keep applying themes and do nothing else.
I am never going to buy xiaomi again.
Hoping I get my hands on an AOSP or CM ROM soon or else I have to sell this ****.

I really don't know what is wrong but I experience the same on both the ROM's, yesterday I got 7.2.12 and after that it consumed only 3 % overnight even with alarm on.
Also, I have one more strange bug whenever I start playing coc my wifi gets disconnected and it gets disconnected randomly too, are you facing any such thing like this.
You have the wakelock qpnp_fg_memaccess that is draining battery. Check with wackelock detector..
Same happened to me one night from 40% to 6% in 6 hours..
This happened because Qualcomm introduced a new feature called Fuel Gauge that is managing the battery and is not working really like it should..
Strange.. I used my phone heavily(not gaming of course) and hardly to hit 70% in 8 hours during day time.

So what does one do about it? its my first day on mi5, i cant say that battery is bad.. its almost same as on a Sony Z5P.
My Mi5 is doing great on the battery... I use it at work i use it at home... during the night it drain around 5% max. Normally i can say it can last 1,5 days...
Using China Stable 7.3.3 With some battery usage tweaks..
Using CM13 I go all day without recharging from 7am to 7pm

MI5 is one of the crazy device ever! Once you receive the phone you will be keep busy with experiment. Some people will tell battery life is outstanding and some like me will say battery life is poor.
My impression about MI5 is, usually after buying a phone we try to use it hassle free. But MI5 will create lots of confusion and make you trend to experiment lots of things until you get the perfection.
Currently the global ROM is most worst ever ROM and it will make you frustrated. Some people will tell China ROM is better but eventually until unless you are Chinese, you will never like chinese things!
Just now flashed CM13 and looks impressive!
The way you charge helps with endurance as well
Try getting into the habit of not letting your battery level drop below 15%. Charge it from there to 100%. Was a big item on xda some months ago about expanding the quality of a modern smartphones battery.
