Changing DPI without root. - Moto Z Force Guides, News, & Discussion

The stock DPI of 640 on this phone is totally wrong and needs to be changed immediately. I recommend the stock Nexus 6p DPI of 560 to avoid any playstore or graphical problems. Here are the steps:
1.) Settings
2.) About phone
3.) Tap build number 7 times
4.) Settings > Developer options
5.) Enable USB debugging
6.) Connect phone to computer
7.) Open command prompt and type the following hitting enter after each entry
8.) adb devices (look for prompt on phone. Check the box and hit okay)
9.) adb shell wm density 560
10.) adb reboot
Done.
To setup adb the easy way, follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790

I need a USB Type C cable for the computer.... Because yes, I agree, the DPI is way off. On the 2015 X Pure it was perfect at 560.

Thanks for the reminder, I wouldn't have even thought about it. :good:

Changing DPI to anything besides stock causes Moto Display alignment to be off. Sometimes way off. I found 534 to be the closest but went back to stock.

I don't know, mines at 560 and works fine ( I can see that it is slightly off though). Luckily in android N changing the DPI is right there in the settings menu. Almost there...

It's a very tiny bit off, almost not noticeable on my phone. Sometimes I will go to press and miss, but rarely.

I changed the DPI and some of the images in the twitter app look very odd.
Also the stuff in the play store under "my apps" looks weird. The app rating and some other stuff are off.
Is this able to be fixed without going back to stock? The proportions are so much better at 560.

There is no way to fix it without root or Android N. We will have one or the other very soon. With that said I think the positives out weigh the negatives.

Agreed. It's way better. So how long before N I wonder. The way Moto and Verizon are, it could be a year.

Moto is fantastic with updates, Verizon sucks. Hopefully since Verizon is so fascinated with it's "Droid" brand, it pushes through the update as soon as Moto has it ready. N is dropping next month, which means Moto can have it ready before Christmas, or already does.

Note that in developer options, bigger numbers means smaller icons etc. 560 is about as big of a number you probably want to go.

Enable tethering blindly

My SGN display was broken including the LCD, hence i'm not able to see anything. I'd like to access and control the device from my PC, what is the best app for this?
My main goal right now is to enable tethering. The touch still works, so i'm confident it can be done.
In the interim, could someone take screenshots of each step from the home screen to enable tethering and post them for me?
I'm going to try and enable it blindly.
Thanks in advance.
The device is a N7000 running stock ICS.
I had a similar problem...

I won't say it's easy but if you are on a Samsung based ROM you might have a chance. (Obviously you'll need to buy a MHL cable though.)
Alternatively, if you've got USB Debugging turned on then you might be able to use Droid Explorer which includes a remote control add-on.
Yes, mhl cable +hdmi is the best chance

Press approximately 1 inch down from the Samsung logo.. - "USB Tethering"
Good luck...

Assuming you have swipe to Unlock
Just lock the screen with the power button - Press power button again then;
Swipe anywhere to unlock
and then press the Menu key..
The Settings option is about 1 cm or so above the Menu key
Lol, i just figured out what the menu key is. I must admit it wasn't a key i used alot.
Something else i just found out, the bottom 1/4 of the screen, touch doesn't work.
I'm starting to lose hope of getting this done.
Could you swipe down from the top of the screen to open the notification screen, there is a settings link there, thats where i'm use to getting to the settings from. I think with a screen shot of that i'll be able to get it done.
Got it done. Found a pic on the internet of the screen i was talking about. Would still like a proper pic. :good:

Tips for coping with an un-rooted device

There are a lot of threads here and in the VZW forum about how terrible this device is, etc, without root. I'm a former flash-a-holic and my last several devices have all been Samsung on stock, albeit rooted, firmware. those of us preferring touchwiz have our reasons, and those who prefer aosp have theirs, but this isn't a "why we can't have aosp" thread, this is about making lemonade with what we have.
so, my reasons for wanting root, and how I worked around them:
1. ad blocking. I LOVE adaway, its seriously the first app I'd install on a new device after rooting. without root, give adblock plus a try. you can turn off the status bar notifications in the app and by ticking the box in the app manager.
its simple enough to disable apps on WiFi, just input the proxy host name and port and you're done. I hadn't ever found a clear and concise instruction on how to do this with mobile data, so here it is- create a NEW APN and copy all of the info from the stock APN, and add the proxy host name and port. done, you now have ad blocking on WiFi and mobile data, without root, and without persistent notifications.
2. de-bloating. first, the s5 has less bloat than the s3 or s4, but its still there. it is INCREADIBLY easy to disable or uninstall on this device. go to the app drawer and press the settings icon (or long press the app switcher button) and select uninstall/disable apps. if its ATT or Samsung, and you don't want it, odds are you can either uninstall or disable it. just make sure that in Samsung Apps you disable automatic updates over WiFi. you can also hide them.
myth busting time: IF you were rooted, and IF you manually removed bloat apps, you do NOT gain ANY additional usable space in device storage.
3. tether bypass. there are multiple threads here on how to do this. I have a 10gb plan so its a non issue here.
4. Writing to extSDcard. most built in apps like the browser, email, and camera will save to the ext SD card. so will my files, which is actually a LOT better than on the s3 or s4.
5. removing bloat bookmarks from the stock browser. I prefer the stock browser over chrome, call me crazy. I also don't like the 4 pre-loaded bookmarks being in my list. I saw a tip here to just create a folder called My Bookmarks or whatever you like and put your bookmarks there. the bloat is still there but its not staring you in the face.
so what else have you guys been doing to get functionality that was easy and convenient with root, but still attainable without?

Speed- I find that a lot of people nag about speed, my phone is fluid in all ways. Three factors play into this, using the TW launcher, animation speed, one last tricky one-- S-Voice has a delay on the home button waiting for the possible hook in for user prompting it. My standpoint is you can get from a TW rom the kind of speed or more that you can with a rom somebody else pre-tweaked for you.
Remedies below.
1. Get Nova Launcher (you can look into others if you like, if you want an experienced users perspective on speed, use Nova it flies)
2. Enable Developer Options(click About Device, click build number until it says Dev mode is enabled), Turn OFF animations for Transition window animation scale, transition animation scale and animator duration scale.
3. Open up S Voice (through the double-tap shortcut or in the app drawer). Tap the menu button in the top right corner (three dots) and find the "Open via home key" option under "Wake-up." Disable for slightly faster home button response.
Some people may find this abrupt transition between applications off putting at first but once you give it an hour the phone is flying so fast I could never go back. Enjoy!
As mentioned above:
Nova Launcher
Transitions at .5 or OFF
De-bloating (see this thread)
And - tasker, tasker, tasker!
My tip.. simple but I'm a customize nerd.
iFont available for free from the Play store allows you to add hundreds of fonts to your phone right from the app, and is compatible with the font selection from settings - display. You can also load fonts from the internet or your computer and use that as your default font.
The one lag, I still can't stand... despite all the animations being off is the lag between camera and gallery... like I take a photo, click the little image to view it and it sits there for at least 15 seconds before the gallery opens up. Anyone else have this issue?? I'm so used to CM based roms and still try to swipe to view the gallery LOL

This could be due to your SD card. If you are saving pics to external SD and your card is a lower class it will read and write data in a longer time frame. If you are using internal memory and not the SD card slot then I'm not sure. Backup everything and try a factory reset. I personally don't have an SD card, I don't see the need without root. Also it takes about 3 seconds for me to do what takes you 15. That's why I think an SD might be the Culprit here
There is 1 thing you can not do without root that is needed for me. I own a Pioneer Appradio and use ARUnchained which requires root. If you don't know what it is then look it up. It basically mirrors your phone and lets you use touch on Pioneers Appradio. I used this with my GS3 and if I would have known we wouldn't have root after this long I would have kept it and not bought the GS5. There is no getting around root for this. Pioneer's stock app has restrictions and doesn't let you mirror everything where as ARUnchained solves this problem.

The menu button function is still there ... just long-press the recent apps button. If you've got a specific app that doesn't display the 3-dots menu somewhere on the screen, you might want to reach out to the developer. That's part of modern Android UX standards. I recently reached out to Untappd and they updated their app to include it pretty quickly.

Ah, gotcha. Unfortunately, short of root reassigning buttons, I don't think that's a desire that will see much traction in the future now that the UX standards require on-screen menus and more devices are coming out without any soft buttons at all. When you get down to it though, you're either tapping the bottom-left of your device or you're tapping the three dots on the screen.
Awesome app called quick click, let's you map your volume buttons for flashlight and a lot of others actions, just throwing it out there missed using xposed, mods with that.

[ADB] How to control the backlight of the capacitive buttons

Here's an app that does the same thing: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.notquiteinsane.galaxybuttonlights
Credit goes to Sander761, just putting it here so everyone can see it. I did this to my regular S 6 and it worked.
sander761 said:
Hi, using my Note 3 and adb I figured out the fix for this. On the Note 3 these settings were under Settings/Display/Touch Key Light. Assuming you have ADB installed and the phone put into developer mode (root is not required, this is 'standard' stuff) + usb debugging to on, take the following steps (tested on an S6 Edge):
* on the PC running adb, connect it to the device and use the command 'adb usb'. Perform the requested action to allow the PC access to the S6 (Edge)
* next, use the following commands to change the light-out period:
"adb shell settings put system button_key_light 0" -> always disable the capacitive button lights
"adb shell settings put system button_key_light -1" -> always enable the capacitive button lights
"adb shell settings put system button_key_light 1500" -> always disable the capacitive button lights after 1.5 seconds
"adb shell settings put system button_key_light 6000" -> always disable the capacitive button lights after 6.0 seconds
"adb shell settings get system button_key_light" -> get the current setting (standard: 1500, ie. 1.5 seconds)
Good luck,
Sander761 (I posted this same instruction on Tweakers.net in Dutch btw)

Also I found out you can shut off the lights by using in SQL editor. I was going in settings provider.db to change my notification toggles when I noticed the option I changed 1500 to 0 and the lights shutoff. will take screencap

Yep, it's a Global rather than Public value. Not sure what the different states are.
global::audio_safe_volume_state::3
[EDIT] Found the constants.
private final int SAFE_MEDIA_VOLUME_NOT_CONFIGURED = 0;
private final int SAFE_MEDIA_VOLUME_DISABLED = 1;
private final int SAFE_MEDIA_VOLUME_INACTIVE = 2;
private final int SAFE_MEDIA_VOLUME_ACTIVE = 3;
You can set it using the ADB method, just have to do global rather than system. It doesn't stick on reboot and doesn't seem to actually do anything. I've never quite figured out how the audio thing pops up or doesn't. Do you know a good method to trigger it?

[MOD]-No Root DPI Changer [WIN Program]

Hi everyone!
Made a small stand alone program that will connect, display & change your DPI for any android device with USB Debugging activated and appropriate drivers installed.
Backstory:
It seems Im one of the unlucky ones with a currently un-rootable H831 and I had wanted to change allot on this phone on the system level. One of the current mods I always implemented was a DPI change.
DPI change on a non-rooted phone is not a problem and is outlined here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/help/how-to-change-dpi-root-t3351366 and is using adb commands to do so.
** But I wanted an easier way to change my DPI and have reference to density & resolution without using ADB and cmd commands all the time. Also my wife can change her DPI like this on any PC without hassle. Therefore I wrote this little program that will display density, resolution and allow you to change it on your phone easily by just running it stand-alone. Since I put the effort into it already, thought I would share & maybe someone could use it the way my wife and I are
Anywho, I also attached some operational screenshots.
Attached is the zip to Download here

Solution?

Im using swiftkey and I have not had any problems.
If however you notice the keyboard has shrunk abit, you can change the size of it in settings anyways.

Hm... I may have to try a new DPI again then. I know SwiftKey used to have issues whenever the DPI was changed to where the keyboard would appear very magnified but still worked as normal, you just couldn't see which keys you were pressing. If SwiftKey now supports different DPIs, I guess I'll have to try changing mine again! Any chance you can post a screenshot with SwiftKey open?
Is it possible to change the actual resolution to achieve more performance and battery using this program?
Good workaround! However, the always-on display is distorted. Is there a way to fix this?

Solution? to what? an over paranoid antivirus program lol!
Dude, In order to get an ADB terminal working I obviously need the ADB DLLs and my program when executed plops the 2 DLLs needed into a temp folder and also keeps ADB sevice open on the system. An antivirus program sees the dropped dlls and the live system service running as suspicious, but believe me its not.

Yes, There are commands using ADB that can change the render resolution mode so I would need to program it in as an option. Maybe I could look into adding that in the future.

No fix for this. You would need a rooted phone and that service framework modded on the system level to even attempt to fix DPI issues with the always-on display. Workaround - deactivate it, or see if there are any third party ones.
Awesome thanks. Just got my H831 today. Sad there is no root yet.
This is one of the main changes I wanted root for.

[App] SystemUI Tuner - By Zacharee1

Please see this thread by a recognized developer i met over on the LG V20 side of things,
Went ahead and tested it against the note 8 without root, you do have to send 3 strings ( Now just 1 set! )of commands via ADB to get it working but this is a one time thing.
This is practically the UITuner android builds into their software and the OEMs seem to kill it for whatever reason. Go to to his thread to check it out and show him some love and thanks. The app is available for free in the google play-store as well.
Practically can be done by a toddler as long as you follow the steps the app asks you to do! Very Simple and super useful!

Have you found anything this cannot do yet? Meaning, from the screenshots on the Play Store, it says some status bar icons cannot be disabled by Samsung phones, have you found that to be true on the Note8 yet? I have the phone but I haven't installed this yet, was looking for a solid solution to removing the useless NFC icon that Samsung always displays, as well as a way to change the awful Bluetooth icon to the AOSP (or as similar as possible) version.
Thanks!
I'm with you man... I hate having the alarm icon on all the time. I know, I know... I ALWAYS have an alarm set!
My note8 doesn't show NFC icon or alarm icon. I use timely so maybe that's why it does show up when I have pending alarms coming up or snoozed iirc. Sprint n8 if that matters

ADB went smooth and I was able to tweak the pull down toggles but volume warning still happens, and it was switched off by default? This is what really bugs me and I want turned off!

I hate it too. I understand when you get that msg with headphones but why I get it with my damn car BT! There was an article at xda that you can turn it off with AutoTools and some ADB commands, but that is not working with Samsung devices at least for me with S7E atm. I manage to fix it with Tasker and AutoInput.

Yeah I saw that but its way too complicated just to stop this minor annoyance, I will just deal with it I guess....
Best app i've seen for Note 8 thusfar. Thank you

Mine cannot hide carrier id, both standard and auto-detect mode it's N950N.
Thanks Zachari! This app got me to get rid of the annoying heads up. But I think something went wrong with the display settings. The screen does not go off by itself. I mean the time out does not work.
Can anyone help?
By the way m using Galaxy S8 Plus.
This is a great app for the note8. Nfc, alarm icons gone. The screen rotation icon will show up so had to turn that off too. Bummer that the volume warning does not work. Can also adjust the number of quicksetting columns. Donated to the developer.

I must be retarted, but I can't get the ADB to work with Windows 10 Powershell. Anyone care to help?
I uninstalled the App and now my Notification pulldown icons are all black. Even after applying the default theme for the Note8 the icons are all white and still can't see them. How do you get the icons colors to show back up properly? I booted into stock recovery and did a cache partition wipe hoping how would fix it and no dice. Any help is appreciated.
Used it with the S8+ and the Note 8 to get rid of the battery icon. On the T-Mobile G1 ADB was the only way to get anything done, even a screenshot.
It's a great app I use it for my toggles and hiding my battery symbol and the immersive mode, can't wait for the volume warning to work on the Note 8 though

I was able to get the status bar icons to show back up by installing the app again and using adb on my desktop, but the question remains how do you completely uninstall this app and go back to stock settings? Is the only way to do a factory reset?

https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2771417
