Glass protector peeling off from the top left corner. Is it common? - Nexus 5X Accessories

Hey guys and gals, I have my 5X for a little over a month now and since the day I got it, I installed a tempered glass screen protector on it. At first there were no bubbles/spots, but now I'm starting to notice a little bubble (like it's peeling off) at the top left corner, near the front camera. Was casually talking with a friend about how much we enjoy our 5Xs when he said that his screen protector was coming off from the top left corner as well. He showed me his 5X, with a pretty big "bubble" under the screen protector with the size of a fingertip, again at the top left corner. So I was thinking is it just ours protectors that bad (mine is unbranded chinese for $1 and his is a branded $10-15 one) or just the 5X is unnoticeable uneven and its common to have the screen protector peeling off after months of usage?
P.S. Comming from a Xperia M2, I applied a cheap $1 glass protector 2 years ago and it still as good as new.

Yep. I just removed my screen protector for that reason. It looked ugly. Will go protector less for a while, Try to break the psychological barrier. With Gorilla Glass 3 and above there is no point really for them anyway.

Do you have a case on it? I would guess maybe something else bumped it? I haven't had any problems. Either way they are so cheap, just replace it.

I had a screen protector on it, but I didn't like how it felt, so I've only been using a case now.

Never had this issue with IntelliGlass tempered glass on my 5x.

All depends on how well you applied it. I've had my cheap Pleson on since release back in October.

Tempered glass for me too. Top right corner has very slight peel back. My guess is the screen rolls off very slightly at the corners. Barely more noticeable than a fingerprint smudge so I've let it be. The rest of it is flawless so I'll leave well enough alone.

I agree with going protector-less. On my N4 before this and on my N5x, I only had a regular bumper case. I never had anything beyond a superficial tiny scratch on the N4 towards the end of it's life with me, which was three years. If you're not carrying it somewhere with keys or similar, you'll be fine. If I have to carry it in a bag where something can scratch it, I put it in a lens pouch that I got with my sunglasses.

Its not only for scratch protection but break protection. In theory the tempered glass breaks before the actually display's glass. Kind of like a crumple zone in cars which absorb the force. I've seen videos of people peeling the protector off and it's fine underneath. However, I'm sure with enough force you could possible break both but I haven't seen videos of that.

The screen protector breaks first because it's not Gorilla Glass.
I think it only makes the device heavier.

Gorilla Glass isn't that great on break protection:
https://youtu.be/1Gdx37VDbmA
Breaks easily on the S7.
Now something like this would've probably helped a lot:

I dunno. The only time I broke a screen was on the N4 when hiking and climbing over something so that I bend the phone in my back pocket. Or the N5 when i stumbled down the stairs and landed on my ass, nearly breaking the phone in half (again in my back pocket).
There's no reason for protectors, screen is fine as is.
Also, my biggest issue with screen protectors is that they get more oily and more fingerprint smudge than the screen does (depends on manufacturer though... my OnePlus One for example was more oily than screen protectors.)

So in your case, keeping your phone in the back pocket is the issue. LOL. I take having to wipe my screen a little more often (Which I don't think I'm really doing) than having to deal with a cracked display.

I used glass protector, it peeled off from sides and got very smudgy then I replaced it with a cheap plastic one and it gives basic scratch protection while being cleaner than glass one. Secondly the plastic one doesn't peel off like glass protectors. I have ordered Supcase for drop protection.

using a chinese tempered glass for 4 months now.
great condition just like in the first day of applying it.
+ I'm using a silicone shell, chinese noname brand of course

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I will order few 1$ protectors and apply them till i get perfect results

gorilla glass 3.... very bad glass?

Guys! I'm very Sorry to note that my phone have a lot of scratches in the screen... I think it is caused by nails but my last phone (lg 2x) with gorilla glass 2 havent any scratch... Now I bought a screen protector... And you?
And me.
Same here. Gorilla Glass 3 suckzz... I applied screenguard as my screen was prone to scratches.
Me too, it's sad because first weak and i get a scratch, but my nexus 7 2012 have no scrath at all and i bought it 1 year ago.
No scratches here, and I have never used a screen protector

I never used screen protector.
I learned it the hard way on my HTC one X (gorilla glass 2). Never wipe your screen with your cloth. It will contain sand grains and that scratches any glass surface.
On my nexus5, I use glasses wipe, and its still in perfect condition.
Hope this helps.
I've had plenty of phones with Gorilla Glass and ALL of them got scratched if used without a screen protector... people need to understand that Gorilla Glass is only scratch-resistant, not scratch-proof. If you don't want scratches, use a screen protector, no matter what.
or take care of ur phone
Gorilla glass is scratch resistant until we see some sapphire glass covers with 9h-10h they will be theoretically scratch proof seeing I tried to scratch the iPhone 5 sapphire lens cover and nothing .
Buy some tempered glass on eBay I Bought one for 5$ its good overall

Mine has those microscratches, which apparently are in the oleophobic layer. Tough, but I can live with them. If it get's any worse I might apply a (glass) screenprotector, but I really prefer naked.
Yeah it's bad. Either they used really cheap GG3, or just used a cheap oleophobic coating. Good thing I have tmo so I can just get another phone when it gets really bad...Thanks jump!
SO many minerals can scratch gorilla glass. It stops stuff like keys from scratching the glass, but get a piece of sand 0.5mm big in your pocket, and your screen is toast

I got rid of some of my scratches that are on the anti-fingerprint layer however the deeper one I could not fix
fixed it with this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Proteger-Sm...t=US_Cell_Phone_PDA_Cases&hash=item2335b86414
I think the glass screen protectors are the way to go. For $15-$25 you just don't have to worry about it and it's a little extra protection if dropped. Plus it feels naked

It sounds stupid, but I always blow on my screen after it's been in my pocket for a while to get any micro particles off of it. Like somebody else said, all it takes is a single grain of sand combined with a wipe of a cloth or a swipe of a finger to wreak havoc. If I see stubborn particles on my screen, will always dab them with my finger to get them off. I will never wipe them.
I have yet to get a scratch on my screen with the above methods.
never had a screen protector, no scratches. my phone is as flawless as when i first took it out of the box in early Nov.
No scratches on my N5, N4, N7, Xoom etc... is it because I don't put it in the same pocket as my keys and change? That's kind of like, common knowledge...
For all the people saying that a tiny piece of sand can scratch the screen, you're completely right, but some of us on here are comparing it to previous phones that we've owned that haven't scratched in the same environment.
I'm not really complaining too much because I stick my phone with everything else in my pocket (keys, cards, anything else really) and it's still in pretty great condition. (I've had it since it came out)

screen protectors

who's using them? i horribly failed at putting one on today (a free one that came with my case..looked crappy though with tons of bubbles between the 3 layers before i even put it on lol) but yeah, i'm real bad at putting protectors on tablets because it kept coming out crooked because of that damn home button etc.
anyway, i've got a pack of 5 coming in the mail sometime this week, and i'm wondering if i should even bother attempting again, or just use it naked. it feels so good without a protector, but i'm afraid of scratching the screen. i've been using screen protectors since 2011 with my HTC Rezound, so idk what to do. i always end up with tiny scratches on my protectors, so i'm thinking i'll end up scratching the screen..

Put one on but spend at least 10 bucks for a decent one. Illunisheild thats the one I got from amazon for the 8.4 its pretty good.

I always put screen protectors on all of my phones and tablets. I've just put one on my Tab S 8.4, had a few dusts under the protector. usually I would rip it out and try again, but I thought not today! Because fortunately the screen protector came with some stickers to help get rid of the dust.
Happy to say it is dust and bubble free now. Although it is not one of those fancy screen protectors, just a cheap one called elec shield.
invisible shield is the best.

I too would like to buy one. I asked ismooth on twitter but they are not gonna make one for the tab S (I have one for my note 3 and it's just perfect).
I think I'm gonna go Invisibleshield. It's not cheap but I've only heard good things about their products :good:
anyone have any tricks as to how to get it on nice and straight on the tablets? I'm bad at tablets for protectors but decent at phones. I saw one idea where you place it down on the screen then tape the sides like a hinge, then you flip it over, peel it off, and just flip it back and lay it on the tablet and it should line up perfectly. wonder if it works.

That's exactly what I did. Works perfectly. The screen protector I bought even came with the positioning tape and stickers for dust removal. But you can just use Scotch tapes.
Mr shield
I have used many different screen protector products. I like spigen and I just installed the Mr shield ones. The are two finishes. Clear and matte. The matte finish cuts a lot of glare but impacts out door viewing. I now have the clear and love it. No bubbles. I have several videos on screen protectors that show tips on install . Herr is my initial install http://youtu.be/NHzarYjTtzE

sweet! i'll give it a try when they come in
Putting on a screen protector reminds one of what a dirty filthy planet we live on. There is dust EVERYWHERE. One tried and true method is to run a hot shower in your bathroom for 10 minutes with the door closed until the room steams up. This pulls all of the airborne dust from the air. Turn the shower off, and use the tape hinge method to apply the protector.
Despite your best efforts you are likely to STILL get that ONE DAMNED PIECE OF DUST FROM HELL that manages to somehow get on the screen. If that happens, DO NOT TRY TO PEEL THE PROTECTOR UP FROM THE EDGE because if you bend it at all it will never seat again properly and you'll have a bubble that won't go away. Use tape to stick to the outside near the corner and gently lift that way, then use another piece of tape to grab the dust particle.
One negative of putting a screen protector on a tablet this size. Unless the protector is tempered glass, you are likely to feel a bit of drag as you swipe the screen - no plastic will ever feel as smooth as glass - and because the area is larger than your phone, you'll notice the resistance more. Also, unless the screen protector has an oleophobic coating, it will be harder to clean greasy fingerprints of it than from glass. Last point, most screen protectors are actually softer than glass so you are likely to get it pretty scratched up which, while saving your glass, leaves you with a scratched up viewing surface you have to look at. The alternative is to buy a screen protector with a hardness of 9 or above with an oleophobic coating but those tend to be a lot more expensive.
Get a pack of 3 or more if you can. You WILL screw it up a few times and you WILL want to replace them occasionally as they get scratched up pretty easily depending upon how anal you are about such things.
good advice, thanks! but do you guys think this thing needs one in the end? I know gorilla glass is pretty soft and scratches easily so idk..

I don't believe this tablet has Gorilla Glass, at least I don't believe the specs say so (could be wrong?). So yes, it could scratch easily. You can try and be careful but all takes is a tiny bit of grit on your finger, stylus or wiping cloth and you are done, Gorilla Glass or no.
Actually you know, skip the steamy bathroom. Just do it in a dry room but use a strip of masking tape and screen until every bit of dust is gone. Also remember, after you place the protector on the screen with the taped hinge, make sure you clean the screen again because it will get dust on it from the bottom of the protector.
Mr Shield makes very good inexpensive protectors.

Why put a cheap screen protector on a premium device like the tab s. The best deserves the best or better. my screen protector cost 2 for 13 and a tempered glass on is on its way for $18. You cant even tell there on when installed correct.

Be very careful with the tempered glass protector. NEVER left it up by the edges - use tape. They bend VERY easily and once bent will never lay down flat properly again. Every tempered glass protector I've ever used developed sealing problems along the edges, especially near the home button. YMMV but that is my experience.
There aren't good selection of screen protectors in the UK. Looked in Amazon, Ebay, Google, nothing with quality. So I only got the Elec shield.
I'd get tempered glass if I could, but as long as I screen is protected for now, then I'm happy enough.

Keeping screen without any protection

Hello Guys, i have had my one plus 3 now for a while and i decided lately to remove the screen protector and i have to say screen fills much more smoother , cooler to the feel and not mention much vivid for sure. i think gorilla glass dose good protection towards scratches prevention , for sure some very small scratches may occur which are hardly noticeable, so tell me guys do you use any protection on your screen?
Have some kind of sock for tough days. Apart from that... Gorilla glass screen and the watch everything through as USD 15 protector? Get a great telly and then glue some plastic onto the screen?

I havent remove the film and dying to. I lost hope on tempered glass, theres still not one TG that works well. The official OP3 is the best but still cut a few mm from the side of the screen.
Now with that been said, i went naked with my nexus 6p and with the in and out of my packed one day (2 weeks after purchase) i notice a 2 inch scratch in the middle of the screen. Even thougn is gorilla glass.
Now i had the note 3 note 5 and galaxy s7 for months running naked and u my see small hairline scratches in the sun but nothing to go crazy about.
My believe is that even though gorilla glass is though, ill be concern more on what kind of coating it uses. Cause coating scratches looks like regular scratches. Thats what i believe my nexus 6P had.

i have never applied any type of protection to my screen before, my pervious phones where all samsung, the last phone was galaxy s5 and i noticed a very thin scratch during strong sunlight but it was not a big deal i never notice it again once i forgot about it, i feel like adding screen protector ruins the experience, but some people likes having it
My NEXUS 5 running naked since 2013, it has few scratches on screen , but u will appreciate only when u r deliberately searching for them, so in short its good if you use it naked.
Always used all my phones naked (no screen protectors, no cases) and I don't regret it. I simply take care of my devices.
- OP3: 5 months old now, looks just like at day 1.
- ASUS Padfone 2: used it for 3 years, has only 1 tiny scratch on Gorilla Glass 2 (and quite a bit scratched plastic back)
- Galaxy S: used it for 2 years, gave it to my mom who's still using it (over 5.5y old now). Has 2 tiny scratches on screen (GG1) and completely scratched back [emoji14]
So I'd say Gorilla Glass really doesn't need any additional protection. Except if you have sand (or other hard minerals) in your pockets.
Case on the other hand is optional. I don't like them personally, but won't deny their usefulness. Aluminum is pretty soft and will scratch way more easily than screen.

Heck i just removed mine now. Only payed $200 for the phone. But even then this film protector is annoying not been full screen
I always like to use my phones naked, without anything, cause it feels the best. But then there is sand. It did my Note 3's screen, and since then no way I am letting any phone's display, Gorilla or Hulk glass, don't matter which to run naked. Just get any quality protective screen like Nillkin or something, and you are good to go. I am a pretty much careful user by the way. Obviously would recommend a tempered glass one but its meaningless on a 2.5D screen anyway.
Im not using any protection

I have my phone since it was launched, I've removed the factory screen protector right after I've unboxed it, and it has been naked since then. No scratches whatsoever.
I removed the one protector which came with OP3 and I saw scratches after a month usage itself. They were in the shape and pattern which made me realize that my thumb's nail made them. I am no wolverine so obviously its something which gorilla glass is lacking. The scratches weren't too obvious when the screen was on, but were visible when it was off. Ended up putting the OP tempered glass coz I didn't want to spoil it further. No issues with smoothness however the edges are few mm short

Spends tons on crappy nilkin and ozly glass with the same no screen glue bs.(the sharp edged hurts my ear when calling too) And a few other generic non-full cover glass.(is it so goddamn hard to make?) Got feed up and torn it off one day. Been using without glass and case for a month now, no scratches on both screen and metal. Dropped a couple of times on ceramic and carpet, no damage. Went to the beach and got sand on it, still no damage. Wash it under tap after beach, still no water damage. Thought I fear one day it will all come back at me, so do not recommend you use it without protection.
Seriously, oneplus may design their phone however beautiful, but if any protection at all null the "curve screen glass technology" I'll rather they keep it on the board and make a more functional phone that need no protection like the htc.

Yup. Saw some water resistance testing at youtube where he dip it in a container for 30 minutes, so why not just some wash under a tap. Of course I bear no responsibility if you break your phone, but I did it after I turn the phone off, then dry all the ports with tissue. I did not directly aim the water at the ports tho, just wash over it, cause my main concern was washing the sand off the screen.
edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlkisMlH5fY He didn't do it for 30 minutes, but its working fine.
update : after using the phone for about 2 weeks, without screen protector idecide to check the screen under strong falsh light, and i found severla micro scratches that are not visible easily , but nothing deal breaker there they are not visible in daily usage.
I am currently using my phone with mivi tempered glass and I am satisfied with it so far the tg feels so buttery buttery smooth.I had a rainbow affect in the beginning but I kept my phone under my pillow and slept on it and on the next day the rainbow affect was gone.

Incredibly easy to scratch?

So I got a oneplus 3t 2 days ago and took it to college for a day. I was blown away by the whole experience. The speed, camera quality, charging speeds and overall feel to the device really surprised me. After my first day with it, I got home and realized about 10 micro scratches along the bottom of the glass at the curve. I was taken aback because I never have scratches on my phones after over a year of having them and this had a bunch after a day.
My pockets were completely empty (no dust at bottom or anything). Since the scratches were at the top of where it would be in my pocket, I figured maybe a stud on my pants scratched it as I pulled it in or out. Checked my pants and no studs on the pair I was wearing. The phone was in my hands or pocket the entire day. How in the hell did it get scratches from touching soft cloth and flesh all day? Like what the hell, did they make their glass out of the ****tiest glass in the world?
If you don't use a protector, you will get scratches. Sorry!
Strange though, my tempered glass is still flawless, not a scratch on it. If I'd go naked I'm sure I get million scratches within the day.
Why did you go naked? Phone comes with a pre applied screen protector

I agree the screen is VERY soft. I have a few hairline scratches on mine, and that was after day one of taking the plastic protector off (like a dummy).
Mine has dents and scratches all over the phone, lol
Here's a sample video from youtube
Its really a gorilla glass and the back camera is sapphire, its not easy to scratch according to the video
Jerry rig everything did his scratch test and it scratched like any phone at a level 6. But in a pocket you can have anything microscopic. Sand is the number one thing found in pockets and is a killer to any phone even gorilla glass 4 that the 3T has. https://www.youtube.com/shared?ci=24t5yhGvvRs

Mine has a hairline scratch too after 14 days of taking care...
Anyone else who took good care and never layed it facedown on table etc. and it scratched?
I've been using my 3T for a couple of weeks now without a screen protector and the screen is still flawless. I usually keep it in a neoprene pouch when not in use though. I really hate plastic screen protectors, and all of the current offering of glass protectors are too flawed in my opinion.

A plastic screen protector. Sorry not gonna buy a nice phone to have a plastic feel to it.
I have the phone since 28th November and I got no scratch. Have it with me without a case or glass
If you look closely under a lamp you will find scratches, sir.
If not, your eyesight is bad

A Nice phone with a plastic screen protector is better than a nice phone with scratch!

Gorilla Glass 4 actually sacrificed some scratch resistance when compared with Gorilla Glass 3 in order to increase shatter resistance. So if you're coming from GG3 you may notice that.

True lol, and plastic screen protector is very easy to replace and its cheap compare to the CGG4 of oneplus 3T which is expensive due to replacement of the whole screen.
Btw there's no official oneplus physical service centers that will handle it
Many people in my country fall for that stupid mistake
Better micro scratches than original plastic protector that attracts smudges as hell and ruins visual experience in general.
My OP3T is naked from day 1 for more than 2 months now and don't see any scratches. Maybe just because I don't give a damn looking at it closely or with a microscope
everydevice every glass can be scratched at certain level of tourcher if you dont like scratch use the protector always
Has any one thought how many scratches our cars have?? and we dont even care
Is this a phone or what? I use it naked. No scratches or anything. Still... I use it.
Do you just say that because scratches aren't affecting you from using the phone or did you check under some light?

Without a screen protector

Do any of you guys use the op3t with no sp? Does it last in a pocket full of keys
I've used mine without a screen protector for a few months now without a problem. Whiles keys shouldn't scratch gorilla glass in theory, it will probably mark up the oleophobic coating on the glass. I would not recommend keeping the phone in the same compartment as keys.

What kind of case are you using?

A thin polycarbonate case, this one to be specific.
I've been using one of my OP3T without a screen protector for a few months now and all is well! =) I'm using a case similar to the one above. My latest one came with a free gel case, but I already bought another polycarbonate case and I wouldn't want the gel one anyway cause you can see all the data through it.
I use a film protector after using my 3t for a few weeks very scratched (minor) can notice massively on certain angles .

That is a useful and informative point. It explains why folks (myself included) have noted scratches on Gorilla Glass screens, even though it is supposed be highly scratch resistant.
Personally I've gone back and forth on using a screen protector. Used them religiously for years, having owned smartphones since the old days when most smartphones did not even have Gorilla Glass, and scratches were almost inevitable if you didn't use a protector. Then on my last phone (HTC M8) I actually bought a protector, but didn't get around to putting it on (the appearance of young children in my life having led to massive procrastination of such things!). The screen seemed fine with no protector, and I ended up just leaving it that way. Going on 3 years, and that phone is still fine; although there are some very faint scratches.
On the other hand, my work makes me carry an iPhone (in addition to my personal device). I have an iPhone 6 that got a huge gouge on the GG screen about 2 weeks after receiving it. Admittedly, I don't give a crap about this phone, and often toss the phone in my pocket with keys, in my bag, etc.
So I guess the short story, is that you can go for years without a scratch (as many do). But you can also get a scratch at any time. It's that latter situation, where you end up regretting it, and wish you had a protector. In the end, it's really a judgment call.
My 3T came with a plastic protector already installed. Some folks have reported having a tempered glass protector. I'll probably just leave the plastic one on, until it gets scratched up or peels off (it's already starting to peel away at the corner near the home button), then from there decide if I want to go naked, plastic protector, or a tempered glass one.
Doesnt it come with a screen protector put on already?
I am using the stock plastic screen protector that comes installed. It protects the phone from scratches, so I thing it it very important.
I usually use glass screen protectors because they can save your screen from braking and it is harder to scratch but on the OP3\T it doesn't cover all the screen, and that really annoys me.
Never used a protector on any phone ever. The OP holds up better than most :good: I try to be a bit carefully with keys and such, but I don't really care for scratches. It's a tool, not jewelery...
I use a Spigen neohybrid, but only to hold the metal plate for my car holder. If it weren't for that it'd be completely naked. I also have a dbrand skin on it. But for the looks, not for protection... That stone with red accents is sexy :victory:

Lol it annoys you? Really??? Mate I've been using the stock one since 2 months ago. I put it on perfect so it don't bother me...yes it's obviously not a full fit. But quality is crap lol. Screen protector has cracks all over it now going to change it out for a plastic film when I get back home

Took off the built in one in November and have been using my OnePlus 3T with a spigen rugged armor. Phone, screen, and case are all in excellent condition.
I was using it without any protector... but i got disappointed... As i saw some scratches... i use my phone carefully...
I was previously using Lumia 1020 from past two years... Still using it without any protector... Still no scratches in two years...
Whereas in 3t the scratches appeared within a month...
I have also i used iphone without any protector, iphone also did not had any scratches until i went to a beach for holidays... there i got some scratches due to sands...
I will suggest you guys to use protection. I was using a tempered glass aftr seeing the scratches but was not happy with the quality as it was making the screen seemed to be a bit inside also the bezel and screen had greater contrast so the full tempered glass comes like that, making the phone look cheaper..also while using the home button it was not a not satisfactory due to the level difference of the tempered glass and the button.. removed that and installed old school screen guard... Im Happy now
