I've noticed it's not the loudest but it also depends on where I'm at....It might have to do with the waterproofing. Not positive on that but it wouldn't surprise me if that's part of it...

It's pretty low for me too. Haven't compared it to my note 4 yet though.

Have you gotten it wet, that's when mine gets so low. The earpiece volume is so bad when wet I cannot hear the other person at all. Also the speaker volume sucks till it's all dried out, which takes forever.

thats one of the first things i do when i setup my phone. they are all maxed and still hardly anything. just played need for speed no limits and almost no volume at all from the speaker. headset volume is fine but almost nothing from the speaker itself

Lower then my s7 edge at times but overall i can hear everything just fine.
Media volume and in call speaker phone.

Yeah the speaker sound is muffled by the waterproofing which I was afraid of.
My note 4 and 5 are way better and the nexus 6P light years better with front firing speakers.
Id be happy to get rid of the waterproofing for a better speaker.

Hiya Force, long time no talk to....
Sorry but I disagree about losing the waterproofing. That's a keeper..lol.
Me personally don't use the external speaker enough to where I would give up waterproofing but I guess I can understand if someone else did.
I'm just happy to have waterproofing. Now only if I had the courage to jump in my pool and use it...lol

We are definitely on opposite ends of the spectrum here though. I have zero need for wateproofing but use the speaker a ton.
Guess i bought the wrong device lol..axon 7 would be a good one and i still may nab one as they are cheap.

Nexus 7 - Package contents, pictures and first impressions

Hey guys,
As the title says, this topic is just for all of you out there who already received our beloved tablet.
Please post pictures of your Nexus 7 in action, the package contents and a mini review and/or first impressions of it.
Cheers!
Mine arrived, order Thursday at 15:30 arrived Friday 09:30 from eBuyer.
I sold a Nook Tablet to purchase this, so I allready like the 7" factor, but Chrome is amazing on this, really great browsing experience.
Google Now does not seem to work very well in the UK yet or show anything useful without voice.
Got my £15 free Play credit instantly, but no sign of the Transformers Movie on my 16GB version.
i like that.. but applied ur screen protector yet? or any case to go along?
Forgot to mention the Serial number peels of the back stupidly easily, I thought it was a sticky plastic cover, but no the whole serial number peels off, So I stuck it to the plastic film and put it back in the box.
So, can anyone confirm the audio quality via 3.5mm jack? Is it as bad as what some are saying?

Sorted the Movie problem. I was using a Google Account from my Domain not a Gmail one.
Had to enable YouTube on my domain and it then worked.
Now have the Transformers Movie.

I'm not a great judge, using some cheap Sennheiser headphones, and its not amazing.
I need to have it on the maximum volume to hear it, its very quiet and the quality is not great.
Not amazing.
Shame. I was all set to buy one, but since I'll primarily be using it for watching films and listening to music using headphones, that's a bit of a deal breaker.

Yeah, that's pretty disappointing. I wasn't too bothered about the external speakers but I was expecting half decent headphone audio quality. Ah well, guess I'm not gonna buy one now.
Wait for the custom ROM's. I am sure they will improve that sound volume.
I have mine... a little smaller than I expected, but still a great size for typing etc
Some apps have problems with the tablet mode though. I can see why they went for the phone layout, the tablet mode when vertical is too small to use. As for smoothness, the launcher and system ui in general is much improved, but there is no difference in third party apps. Touch sensitivity and response is incredible, however. They may have to be updated, Im not too sure. The screen is also a little washed out.
However, I still love it and can't wait to spend the rest of the day on it xD yay!

Its the quality I'm more concerned about I'm afraid and no amount of custom ROMs or DSP enhancement will overcome poor signal to noise unfortunately.
Meh, I might still give one a demo in store, I've got a selection of headphones - maybe it will sound ok on some of them.

Nexus 7 sound fix does work

Hi I have bought a nexus 7 32GB and was disgusted at the distortion on the speaker not just with music but it also distorted with voice on some you tube videos. I googled the problem and found it was common. someone mentioned a fix using a free equalizer download on the play store as its just a case of too much low frequency being put through the speaker and this can be adjusted using the equalizer.
Just search and download equalizer from the play store once installed follow the instructions to set it as your default audio setting. Below is how I set my equalizer bars to remove the distortion ...

The thing with equalizer is that it doesn't solves the problem, you just stop using frequencies which are causing the distortion. The solution is to return faulty N7 and get new one.

I doubt it's a QA/assembly problem, rather just really daft design on the speakers. ie: A return is unlikely to fix it, unless the problem with the design has been fixed.
This workaround might work... but i don't want Yet Another App running. It'd be nice if Android had one built in, but IMO it's not useful if I can't switch automatically when I plug in headphones or such, as I don't want to switch back and forth. Perhaps there's another app like this one that will do it, but didn't see anything in the market that obviously did it anyway.
It is only a workaround and its best to send your nexus back and have it properly repaired or replaced but it does solve the problem in the short term but with a slight loss of volume. The nexus we have here is my girlfriends and she uses it more for shopping then anything else so sounds not a major issue.

Ditto.
I was fortunate enough to receive a Nexus 7 as a gift from a rep, but was shocked at how quiet the max volume was in comparison to my Tab 2 7". It's literally about half the volume (probably not even that really.) Not good for a device that's ideal for all sorts of multimedia applications. I use my Tab all the time for movie watching, background music while working on a project and as an alarm clock. I'm scared to trust the Nexus with alarm duties as I might not even hear it!
I'm past my rooting/rom'ing years (don't have the time nor want to fiddle with that anymore) and it looks like the volume booster apps that used to work for the Nexus 7 no longer work since 4.2. Has the sound always been this quiet (and relied on volume boosting apps or rooting as a fix?) Just trying to decide if I'm going to keep this thing.

jaybird bluebuds X

Hi Guys
I bought the Nokia BH-505 bluetooth stereo headset, it is great for music but awful for playing games as there is the problem of sound delay. So the sound of every click i make on the phone is delayed by around 1 second which makes it really annoying
I came across the Jaybird bluebuds X and the review about them seem to be great in terms of sound quality and comfort, but I am not sure whether they also have the issue of the sound delay.
Has anyone used the bluebuds X and can confirm whether there is delay or not, or even if someone can recommend a good bluetooth stereo headset that has no delay
Thanks
I have the Bluebuds X and I haven't noticed any delay. I just use them when I'm working out so I couldn't tell you how they perform when playing a game. For music they are pretty awesome.

Hi guys
Thanks for the feedback, but my main concern is the audio delay which you cannot detect when listening to music. Can you try a game and check whether there is delay. For example when you press the fire button in a game do you hear the fire sound immediately or do you hear it delayed by almost a second? Thanks

I swap mine with TSX500 last week, first I thought it doesn't fit, hard to put the bluebuds inside the foam, but after couple tries, it went in, better comfort, better sound outputs.
An Alternative
I use these:
http://www.lg.com/us/cell-phone-accessories/lg-HBS700-tone
Unfortunately, after testing them with Inotia 4, I found out that the delay is there for these, too. It's kind of strange, though, since there was no such delay before when I used them on my Sensation XE. And then again, when I used them with my Vita, the audio was delayed, too.
Anyway, if you're still interested, there's a newer version of these, the Tone+ or HBS730.

I ordered a mix pack to test out all the sizes. I ended up fitting best with a medium as far as I can tell so I gave the small ones to my GF and I may or may not use the large ones some more to do more testing to see if the larger ones offer better isolation and retain relatively the same comfort.

Hi,
I've these earbuds. Yes, there is 1 second delay in games(Ex : Temple Run). But no delay in videos.
I experience the lag during gaming as well using my BlueAnt Ribbon, and I believe it is a known issue for Android. I read somewhere that 4.2.2 is supposed to fix it.

I have had the BBX's for roughly 2 weeks now. I have only noticed a delay when my phone is "sleeping." Otherwise this is the best set of bud headphones I've owned since I bought my Soul SL99 last year. Now to get these foam earplugs everyone is talking about to finalize the fit!
Wow. I just checked for these on Amazon.co.uk and apparently JayBird think that $=£, as they're trying to sell them for £170 (almost $260) compared to their $169 price in the US :/
do you still need those little "wings" on the earpiece once you install the Comply buds?

Phone is good, but has some major flaws.....

Camera quality = decent
Video Recording = laggy when moving around (try it yourself)
Speakers = lol are they serious?
battery = alright, nothing great.

The speaker is whatever to me. The placement isn't the greatest, my finger seems to fall in that spot quite often, but as far as the quality, it's... a cell phone. Coming from the HTC One I feel spoiled. I just took some camera shots in my apartment between the One and the Nexus, normal and HDR, and I was impressed with the Nexus' camera. I just wish the shutter speed was faster.
I was worried when I got it that it wouldn't live up to the One, and while there are some trade-offs, I think I'm going to be happy with making the switch.
The direction of the speaker makes a big difference. In landscape mode the sound only comes from 1 side which almost feels like one of your headphones isn't working.
On the plus side the quality is quite good when volume isn't an issue.

I still see this phone not as a migration for people already having an high end device but a really good jump from older devices. I had an HTC one X, and if it had not broken six month ago (I fell back to HD2 in the mean time) I wouldn't have bought the N5. It's a good device, but a part from the hype I don't see any major motivation to switch to it.

You could say that about ANY device.
They are all a compromise, you have to decide if the balance of price / features / openness /etc is right for you.
Speaker sucks!! Not a real improvement since N4. I can even flash some special mod to make the speaker in my previous N4 more seriously.... Someone still said.... decent volume? O.M.G.
Luckily I listen to music through Bluetooth in my car, and never talking when turn on the speaker, so... not a big deal. But my brother just give up and trade it plus a couple $ with an HTC One and happy with that (sh!tty phone IMO)
Everything else is great. I love my N5.
This is my first Nexus phone and I Ferrell the speaker is low, but I'm learning it may be certain videos while on YouTube.

And they are entitled to criticize the product, we just simply need one thread for such comments, which are as good as yours or mine.
So far the only thing that's disappointed me is battery life... speaker placement is questionable sure, but not that big a deal in my opinion. What are the odds of battery life improving noticeably with an update from Google/developers?

Bottom speaker distortion

I bought note9 exynos variant so about week ago and have noticed that when I'm playing audio with lot of mid range I hear distortion quite clearly from the bottom speaker even without eq or dolby enabled, is this a defect or is it how akg/samsung designed it to sound like?
In song like Indestructable by aaro only thing I first hear is distortion and crackling from high to mid high volumes. earpiece seems to play without distortion.
What is it? An mp3 (or other format) saved in your phone (or SD card) or from someware alse like from sporty or internet? Because if you saved it, maybe the volume of the file is registered to much high so, with a pc (or app that dose it) you can change the level to about 2 or 3 dB on peaks (first or second red lamp on the old dB meters ) to eliminate distorsions. These types of distorsions may come even at low volumes of the phone (or what ever it might should be playing it) because the song's volume is to high.
From YouTube and from phone it doesnt really matter and some game sounds too depending on frequency

On that particular song's beginning even at little over half volume when I put my ear close to bottom speaker I can hear crackling, but on full volume crackling at beginning is very obnoxious and its not even that loud. Eq is flat and dolby atmos is off.
Bass full drum plays without problems but its some mid frequencies that easily triggers that distortion or crackling

I have atmos off and also my EQ is set at normal.
I listened to it up to 1.36s mark and couldn't hear any crackling as such. But perhaps some hissing, was observing bottom speaker only. Volume was set at 70%.

Oh so is this note9 speaker unit defective? It doesn't sound like normal distortion or so it sound like speaker hits something or so, in some songs like that quite clearly. In some I don't hear any but that because they don't have that kind of frequency lot.
Or it sounds a speaker that's underpowered.

Must be the video, if it's only doing it on that song. Maybe others can also listen to the link you posted and chime in.

I put a sample of how that beginning sounds from note 9's speakers at 80% volume, eq set to normal and Dolby Atmos turned off
Hi there!
I've suffered from the same issue on my Note9. I sent it in for repair, and it came back with the same issue again. I have a feeling it might be a software issue, or a board issue. Either way, I've found that I can configure the equalizer and Dolby Atmos to mostly mitigate the issue. My Dolby Atmos setting is fixed on Music mode, and I have a curve on the equalizer, with the 250Hz and 500Hz frequencies at the the 0dB line (although there is a slight amount of wiggle-room for these) and I have my 63Hz and 16KHz maxed, with the other sliders forming a "U-curve"
Hope this helps you,
Tom
