Sub Par WiFi Performance - T-Mobile Note 7 Questions & Answers

Coming from a Note 4 which was a phenomenal device. The Note 7 will be the first phone I have had without root in MANY YEARS. So far I like it, but this issue that I just noticed is a major one and I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing it.
My home internet speed is 300/20. I regularly get Speedtest results 340/25 on my PCs and both mine and my wife's Note 4's when connected to the 5ghz band on my AC router. We both have the Note 7 now and rarely break 30-40 Mbps download speed. I have tried everything and this definitely appears to be a firmware issue in the Note 7. My friend came over with his S7 active (ATT) and his Speedtest results were in line with my network. We still have our Note 4's (I have to restore them to stock before sending them back) and they still get 340/25.
Anyone else experiencing similar issues?

I don't have the best internet but mine tests within 5Mbps of my macbook.
I'm getting about 76Mbps download (85Mbps last night). Thats close to the fastest I see on my network.

Anyone else? Any ideas?

Try turning off the setting for optimizing WiFi performance on battery. That causes strange behavior with certain routers.

And where may I find this setting?

No, I have the HTC 10 currently. But the setting I'm referring to was present on the S7 Edge and Note 5. Looks like Sammy either moved or removed it.

I am getting similar results on my Wifi as I had with my S7 Edge, actually my upload speeds were the best I have seen. I have google fiber and my speed test came in at 273.87 mbps down and 403.30 mbps up. On my S7 Edge I was normally around 300 mbps down and 250 mbps up. My Nexus 6 was also very similar to these results.

Getting great WiFi reception. Much better than my previous phone. :good:

Yep, I'm having the same issue. My S6 edge maxes my connection 195 down, 20 up. This phone barely hits 90, even struggles to get there.

This is definitely an issue. My wife's Note 7 mirrors my results. We still have not sent our Note 4's back on JUMP trade-in and they both still absolutely fly on Speedtest. It is not a router configuration issue (I am very competent and have my CCNA). My speeds are fine on my desktop, 2 laptops, and a tablet. Furthermore, when you said yours "struggles" to get there, that is exactly how it seems, the downstream test is jumpy and jerky, like a car that needs a tuneup.
I hope that this is merely a software issue and not a hardware problem. I am confident that you, me, and my wife are not the only 3 people experiencing this.

I think I may call T-Mobile on this. Ran another test with my laptop, my s6 edge, my wife's s6 and all were far more impressive than this.

Same network, same distance to wifi, same server, low load on downstream, my upstream does not matter much to me.

Did you check thr link speed for your connection? If you go to settings open up your Wi-Fi settings, then tap on your connection it should give you the link speed. My Note 7 is connects between 65 - 195mbps, while my Note 4 connected at 351mbps. Not sure why the older phone has a better connection speed.

I wasn't saying that it's not a hardware issue, and I also wasn't suggesting that a router issue would be your fault. In this case, CCNA does not apply. You're comparing a Note 4, with 2 year old hardware, against the Note 7, with the latest 802.11ac chipset available. This invalidates your direct comparison, and further points back to a possible router/firmware issue specific to the chipset inside the Note 7. Don't believe me? Take a look around the HTC 10 forums at all the WiFi issues people have there. Poor signal strength, poor range, high ping, packet loss, goes on and on. And going back to your CCNA, you know it doesn't take much for a handshake to get out of whack and issues to arise. Hell, I had to install a DD-WRT Linksys router in my office after Cisco's latest enterprise firmware to our WAPs completely obliterated the ability for my S7 Edge to connect.
I've had no WiFi issues at home, Verizon FiOS (150/150) + Netgear 802.11ac router, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 2013, Galaxy S6, Note 5, S7 Edge, HTC 10, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, etc.

Y'all got me scratching my head and searching around. Found this. But honestly, as soon as your Note 7 is attached to your home router, you should be getting the same speed if not faster than your older device. Well, it were me.... I'd power cycle the router, make sure it's the only WiFi connected device and then do other isolation troubleshooting. Shouldn't have to be that way though. Plug and play...not plug and pray.

Your point is? Yes, the Note 7 has the latest 802.11ac chipset. I also have a fairly new Netgear R6400 dual band ac router. Of ALL the devices in my home, our Note 7's and that router are the most recent. Therefore, they should definitely play nice together OR at the very least - as good as the considerably older devices I have referenced.
The whole point of this thread is pointing out that I believe there is an issue with the firmware or hardware on some of these devices and seeking possible solutions. I am damn near 100 percent certain that it is not an issue with anything external to the phone.
I have diminished wifi speed (compared to my much older Note 4) at every wireless AP that I connect to on a regular basis - not only at home.

My point is that there may in fact be an issue with the chipset, but unless you can compare it to another device with the same one, you cannot find the true root cause.

I have also some problem with the wifi.
If I am under 3 meter from my access point, there is no "problem". But if I am farest, my Note always disconnected. Every 3-5 seconds, the Note is doing a scan of the networks and cut the connection. With others phone I don't have the same problem. For example, it's impossible to listen to radios with wifi, download some stuff, there is always disconnection.
I saw that some other android phone had the same problem, is there a solution for the Note?
Thanks for your responses and sorry for my bad english.

Yes I've found wifi to be worse than my old desire
Most of the Samsung made devices I have seen recently for Wifi are pretty much crap. Not sure why but most have weak wifi signals. The Galaxy S2,Nexus S and the new Samsung Note are pretty much all the same as far as Wifi signals are concerned.
So I'm not sure if this is related, but it sounds like it might be. My note can't see my 5ghz wireless N. Anyone experience anything like this?is

Probably the Note's antena is a 2.4 GHz one. 802.11n != 5 GHz only. I learned that the hard way with my home network.
Which is a real bummer. I didn't know Samsung's devices had crappy WiFi, as it's the primary means my mobile devices get online.
My 2.4Ghz notebook makes 150 mbps speed, why Galaxy Note cannot use 150mbps? Actually the maximum speed is 65mbps even near the AP. I can't use DLNA, because all the videos are glitch with this speed. Can anyone explain is it possible to increase the 802.11n WiFi speed?
I was pretty sure its supposed to be dual band. I thought id resd other people had used 5ghz. Anyone have any experience with this?
Also my reason for wanting to use the 5ghz band his nothing to do with bandwidth and everything to do with the horrible. 2.4 ghz congestion in my apartment. If I'm near my router it's fine, but in other rooms I get wildly fluctuating speeds on 2.4ghz congestion(regardless of the device used).
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
It is not necessary to use the 5GHz band for 150mbps speed. It is enough 2.4 MHz.
I was going to get the unlocked Note to use ONLY on Wifi and maybe with the h20 prepaid at&t prepaid sim. This Wifi problem has me worried.

Well if it makes you feel any better, I am having no wifi issues what so ever, other than I am getting the sneaking suspicion it just doesn't support 5ghz bands at all.
Anyway, my 2.4ghz n is working just fine.

afaik generally speaking 5GHz quality deteriorates much quicker with distance and obstacles than 2.4GHz - it probably wouldn't be any better than 2.4 GHz.
Btw can someone measure .g and .n max speeds ? If I remember correctly SGS2 peeked at 32mbps no matter of the connection type so if Note does 65mbps then wifi in SGS2 and Note aren't identical. On the side note: SGS2's wifi is really crap, HTC Sensation's XE wifi works even with couple of walls in between the router I can browse the net, download etc. without problems, while SGS2 is close to unusable at that distance. I really hoped Samsung had learned they lesson with crap wifi implementation sadly this doesn't seem to be the case :/
Well I can tell you that in my apartment, the 5ghz band is a much better bet. Trust me, I have tested it a bunch with multiple laptops.
As far as wifi speeds, the fastest I have seen is roughly 30mbps on a rock solid 50mbps fiber connection.

I can confirm the same with the Note. The speed with 5Ghz N is way better and dropoff at least in my apartment is much less.

WIFI-g works fine on my device.
Both 5ghz and 2.4ghz work fine on the note, with the exception of 5ghz @ 40MHz channels which the note can't see. Of course the 5ghz band deteriorates faster as you get further away from the router but in 2.4ghz crowded places its still better to use the 5ghz radio. It's really very individual, each has to adapt to his environment's limits.

Maybe just an issue with t-mo versions, or even more likely is your router. I'm 15ft away from my router and still pull down an average of 50mbps with iperf.

Using an asus N66U. Would love to test 802.11AC but don't have a capable router yet.
Also something that I noticed when testing this, my One really doesn't want to be told to connect to 5ghz wifi only. It refuses to (re)acquire an ip address after being told to connect to 5ghz, so even if I had an AC router, I'm not entirely sure how I'd force it to use 5ghz in the first place. So the iperf test above is using standard settings on the One, with "use best wifi perfomance" enabled under power settings.

I don't think it's a distance issue, I was near my router when I tested the speed.
My wifi speeds on the contrary are very good indeed compared to my old Galaxy S3.

Better WiFi speeds than my N4 and better signal strength too.
I haven't tested a local LAN connection, but for internet speeds the wifi is fine. This is using an Asus RT-N53 router, Wireless N, 2.4 GHz band on top, 5 GHz band on the bottom:
Speeds are great, only problem is the unreliability of the 5 GHz band on the router itself, but the phone is fine.
To compare my desktop on a LAN connection gets 33 mb down and same upload speeds as the wifi.
Speedtest.net gives me 61M down and 7.73M up, which is pretty much the same as my desktop computer gets.
Note that this is using CM10.1 on a 5Ghz network (Apple Time Capsule). When using stock firmware I'm unable to connect the the 5Ghz network at all, it just doesn't see it.
I have an Asus RT-AC66, and the WiFi speeds on my One are great - link speed is 433 Mbps. Speedtest shows download speeds of 74 Mbps on my 80 meg broadband connection.

Stronger wifi

It seems that the Wi-Fi on the nexus 5 is a lot more sensitive then on the Nexus 4. With no changes in network gear I'm able to get WiFi in more places than before. It even stronger than my old HP laptop.
I noticed that as well although at first I paniced because the wifi bars would show weak signal.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I've experienced the exact opposite.
It does do really well on WiFi huh? I was surprised a few days after I got it, sitting in a parking lot trying to swipe some free WiFi and the Tab 8.9 wouldn't connect, but the Nexus 5 did. It's almost on par with my HP ultrabook, which no mobile device has touched.
Does well on 5ghz too, which is a nice bonus, since I prefer to use 5ghz to avoid all the clutter on the 2.4g band.
yeah it's awesome. I live on the 6th floor of an apartment building and I was able to get signal from the first floor (not the void deck but in the open space surrounding my building though)
WiFi signal strength was my concern after a few users reported weak WiFi reception. My N5 got great WiFi reception, which is similar to SGS3/4 reception and better than iPhone 5 has.

Same.
At home in my bedroom across the house from my router I would have no trouble with my N4. Not so much with my N5.
What is strange for me is that I can see APs that I couldn't see with my Galaxy S2, but the AP I m connected to has now a weaker signal.
I hope that is only software related...
wow!
A mostly positive thread about a nexus 5 feature. My WiFi is great and faster also than my htc's.
Mine consistently shows weaker signal on both Wi-Fi and mobile network compared to my s4. Using Wi-Fi analyzer I see more networks with my s4. I tried turning off n5 battery saving on Wi-Fi and it makes a slight difference. I feel the signal is weak for the n5.

Any coverage of the top half of the back of the phone sees a big drop in WiFi reception for me.
If I'm in a different room from the router, even placing the phone down on its back sees a big drop in WiFi strength.
Those in this thread saying they have strong reception, what happens when you do the above?

That can actually severely hamper landscape usage if true.
I did some testing and Wi-Fi speeds do match my S4 despite the meter reading showing lower signal. Also, even with 1 bar less than max for mobile, I get incredible LTE speed.

I really had to cup my hand over top to get the signal to drop. So unless you hold your phone as if it was a baby bird, you should be fine.
I think the opposite of this phone. In the back of my house I get 1 bar on the N5. On my old S3 I would get 2-3 bars and wifi worked just fine. With the N5 and 1 bar wifi is not working nearly as well. I also noticed that the signal is weaker on the N4.

This is exactly what I've found as well. But to be honest, I think the S4 is able to get really good signal. I had a iPhone5 a couple of months ago and wasn't able to get signal in a certain part of my house (same with my N5). With my S4, I was able to get signal just fine.
Has anyone tried the 802.11ac band yet? I don't have a router that can broadcast on that.

But unless it's actually the ac wifi, you don't have access to beamforming, which is supposed to help with the range weaknesses of the 5ghz band. The nexus 5 is one of the very first devices to support it, so I'm curious.

[Q] Slow Wifi with Note 3 on Airport Extreme

Hey, guys. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this.
I have an last generation Airport Extreme. Everything has been fine with all of my devices until recently. The only thing that changed is that I got an update for the Airport Extreme. Now, my Note 3 and ONLY my Note 3 is super slow on Wifi. I don't even get 1 mbps download. I tested several other Android and iOS devices and they have no issue. I checked all of the wifi settings on the Note and I can't see anything else that would cause this. I power-cycled my router and there has been no change. Everything else in the house is getting good speeds.
My Note 3 used to work perfectly fine on my AE, so this is definitely new. Anyone experience something similar or have an idea of what it might be?

No issues here with a 5th gen Airport Extreme.

So, I set up a separate 5ghz network and connected to that. Speeds are fine there. It apparently only has issues with the 2.4ghz and it's only my Note having the issue.

Wifi speed

So yesterday fios installed the quantum router which gets 150/150 speeds. When i do a speed test on my nexus 9 on wifi i get this: (edit) refer to first picture below
When i do a speedtest on my note 4 i cant get any better than this: (edit) refer to second picture below
What gives? When i first did a speed test after he installed it, i got 80 down. I shouldn't have to reset router as he did it a few times when instslling. The only thing that i changed was the channel to 11 my dad said his verizon notification thing in his pc said there was a lot of interface and to switch to channel 11. it can't be the channel thats causing the problem cause i did these two speed tests at the exact same time. I tried turning on smart network switch in wifi settings but it didn't seem to make any difference. Does the note 4 just not have good wifi hardware? Idk what else to do. Whenever i watch youtube it constantly buffers and it annoys the crap out of me i should not have to have buffering with a quantum router!

I have a few friends who live in NYC. Who is ur provider and NYC is big can you give a street or at least near a big attraction. I have optimum and on my PC I get same as phone. Had the 101 but not worth it considering the servers I download from throttle on their end.
