New update - T-Mobile Note 7 Questions & Answers

I got a replacement this morning and was wondering if I can permenantly block updates somehow? I know I don't have a faulty model now and don't want the ugly new features they added in there.

Get the package disabler app from play store. You can disable the software updates without root

I don't like that all notifications are combined now. It's very irritating. The phone is also much laggier than before I've noticed. Charges slower. The faulty note 7 was too lazy for a $850 device to begin with, but I hoped they'd fix it. I really don't like the green battery either, but that's not a big deal really.

In my experience it was way less laggy than V1 and fixed most of the issues I had in gaming with poor performance and muddy textures. Plus the fingerprint sensor is really fast now

The update fixes the laggy issue but you'll get everything else as well.

I updated V1 because I have a V2 on order and had nothing to lose. Since it's the same hardware sans battery, I wanted to see what the update would do.
It was indeed quite laggy until I ran the device maintenance app and rebooted. It seems to be smoother now than before. I do, however, prefer the previous notification pull down.

Has anyone noticed a change in their status notifications?
On my original Note 7 notifications were not "grouped" if I had multiples from the same app (Facebook). Now I have to tap on the group to get them to expand.
I have noticed similar behavior for SMS messages. I no longer get a message preview and I do not have the option to reply from status bar..

I agree!

I received my replacement last night and there is definitely a lag, but nothing like the POS HTC Desire they gave me as a loaner and after charging on the wireless charger all night, it was only at 76%. I also cannot for the life of me find where I can change the alarm ringtone now (the settings does not have that option any longer) which is I why I came here. I did notice some interesting additions though.

If you go to the Clock App then select the Alarm tab. Select the Alarm entry you would like to modify (or create a new one). To change the ringtone select the Sound and Volume.

The fingerprint scanner on my old note 7 was fast. I don't know what everyone is talking about. My replacement was fine until I was forced to update.

Just a heads up. I still don't like the new notifications but the phone has seemed to speed up. The only issue I have right now is my battery life is mediocre. I'm trying to figure that out today.

I really doubt this iris scanner is gonna make it to the next note.....people are not crazy about it ...i for one don't use it, I wear glasses most times, I'm not gonna do the trial and error thing with it or take my glasses off....fingerprint is perfect for me.

Yes, and that was also pretty handy. I used it all the time, especially if my hands were full, wet, gloved, etc.

I'd rather use the pen in extreme cases. It's just a gimmick to add $ to the price.

I probably wouldn't miss it if it were gone, but it is useful enough that I won't complain about it being there.

If one or both hands are full and you can't touch the screen or fingerprint scanner, how is taking the pen out and using that easier than simply looking at the phone with your face?

I am having issues with my panel.. at first I couldn't figure out why scrolling webpages seemed so laggy...then I discovered it is not properly "holding" on to a press...it cycles it... I am horrible at explaining it so I uploaded a video.

Mine was doing that, I couldn't move icons at all until I did a factory reset. Now it is a lot better but still a little flaky when moving icons. I think it is a software problem, maybe be improved with an update.

I'd need to look at the video again to see if it caught I'm talking about. But, I would hold my finger down and the touch indicator under my finger would flash as if I was tapping the screen.
That's not good then.

it kinda reminds me of the multi-touch issue the Gnex had at launch. Or maybe even the grounding issue the EVO 4G had.

Having the same issue. Unrooted, returned to stock. I'm convinced it's a heat issue - it is fine when cold, and then goes wonky after a bit of use. Decided to return rather than exchange it - wait on my pre-order from J&R that is like a month out. Should be worked out by then.
Here's my video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZPDzKhQzSU&feature=g-upl
A touchscreen device where the touchscreen doesn't... recognize... touches... kinda sucks. :-(.
Google Guy said there were a lot of problems with the pre-orders, not for retailers, FYI. He was quite honest, refreshingly so, so I won't reveal his name . If it's any indication, it took me about 45 minutes on hold to get through just now!

(Although I still have no idea what I'd use it for...)
My girlfriends has this issue, but I fail to see how it can be a hardware issue since it seems to stop upon reboot at least (yet to try it just sleeping and waking it).
Will keep an eye on it and worst case RMA after a few days when their support is a bit quieter.

Reboots aren't stressing the hardware too much, at least not the GPU. If the GPU is overheating and heating up the digitizer or something else, it can be cool enough to work when the reboot is complete. Just a theory...

Turns out putting it to sleep and waking it also fixes it. Really not sure now if it's hardware.
I did not have this issue start until yesterday and have been using my I/O Nexus since the event.. I feel like its something to do with flashing Roms that somehow changes the way the digitizer responds to touch.. Maybe a calibration issue of some sort.. Just an idea.

My GF hasn't installed any ROMs, however she did install the 4.1.1 update. It stinks of software issue. What does pressing the sleep button actually do?

Now that I can finally talk about it (lol), the main thing I have found to be different in 4.2.2, is the battery life. I can EASILY make it through a day and have plenty battery remaining. I have had days where my talk time was around 2.5 hours, and my screen time was 2 hrs, and the battery lasted 17 hours. With medium to heavy use, my battery still easily makes it to 15 - 17 hours. A light use day now can easily have the battery last 24 hours. All in all, the update isn't a major change. There are a few things like the battery charging sound and the quick toggles (long press to do it), but overall the most significant thing the update brings is acceptable battery life. Whereas before, battery life was the Nexus 4's weakness, it is now something of a strength. It's also worth noting that the screen sensitivity issue has been addressed too.

Its not a minor patch, 50MB is big for an incremental update, and it is only contain bug fixes.

Any news about the data not working when the device is idle for a long time? Or is it me the only one who has it??
Edited for what I assume may be better clarity:
Anyone else experiencing the notification dropdown being... slower? Like they smoothed out the animation of it opening, but now it feels like it takes too long. I liked it being quick before. It seems to be fine if you flick further (than usual for me), but if you do just a really quick flick, it's slower. I don't know how to explain it. I mean it acts like "normal" if you pull it down about half way with your thumb as fast as you want before releasing, but.. that flick man!
I LIKE TO FLICK! =[
Edit #2: Now that I think about it, the notifications feel like they open the way they did when 4.1 first launched, because I remembered them being slower then, too. I got used to it then, but having it the way its been for so long, its annoying to go back.
Also, maybe I'm just crazy.

Now it looks laggy in a way. I doubt it's because I have a lot of notifications loaded up because they were there before the update, too, and I had no problems.
Edit: It will now pull down as fast as you pull it down if you manually drag from the top to the bottom of the screen (i.e. using your finger about half of the way instead of just a quick flick). However, the act of flicking the notification tray down to open it, is slower.

Used to happen to me on the GNEX ALL THE TIME. On the Nexus 4 it only happened to me a few times, however, and that was near when I got it. I don't think I had the problem at all for the duration of 4.1.2. Strange...

Anyone else moving from the AT&T Note 3 to the Google Nexus 5?

Just as I was starting to get use to the size of the Note 3 and all the crazy bloatware on this device, I gave up ... and have started using the Nexus 5 as of Friday. Anyone else move to the Nexus 5 from the Note 3? Are you keeping it in hopes of CM 10.3 someday soon or selling it? Trying to decide if I'll hold on to mine in hopes of a good root and CM ROM soon, or will the Nexus 5 be my phone for the next few months.
I seen a review on youtube, and I will definitely not be getting that phone.

I've been on the fence to do it since Nexus came out. But one of my colleagues has it and display is not good at all. it is 1080p but a mediocre one. It has pinkish hue in whites. I like its size and feel but Note is something else as far as battery and display. The only thing that sucks as for now is not knowing when 4.4 is coming.
I got my note a few days before the nexus came out. But I'm glad I got my note, I think it's superior to the nexus in all ways, except for the vanilla and getting updates immediatly aspect. I just wish att would give an option to unlock our bootloader. If they do then I definitely will not regret buying this phone at all.

No way lol. Stock Android is boring and a complete joke to me. And the look of it with the big icons is just stupid.
Add to all of that terrible battery life, a mediocre camera, worse speaker than on this phone and it's a big nope for me.
And did I mention how much I hate stock Android and how boring it is? I love the features of the Note and will deal with some bloat to have all of those features.
The Nexus are popular because of lower price and immediate updates. Otherwise they suck imo.

My wife just got LG G2. It's considered to have an excellent display. But I was reminded how much I love Oleds. And not for the saturated colors (I put it in movie mode) but for deep blacks. People should make a bigger deal regarding the contrast of these screens. It's truly a major feature and affects the whole experience.
So while I would consider a Nexus 5 a great phone the oled will bring me back to Samsung devices. I just wish Samsung got their act together software wise.

While I would love to have vanilla google over cartoony touchwiz, it's a step down to go to the N5. Pretty much every phone atm is a step down imo.
I'd consider giving it a try if I could find a used one somewhere, but I've had every version of the note, and it's the only android line that keeps me coming back to android.

Moved from Galaxy S5 to which device?

I probably didn't give the phone much of a chance I only had it for 48 hours, but the lag and the fact I got offered a iPhone 5S, Galaxy Note 3 and a Nexus 7 (2013) for it, made the decision easy.
What phones have people decided to move too, either by trading or returning there Galaxy S5?

You got offered all three? or chose one of the three? - 48 hours isn't much of a test I gotta say, I'm actually toying moving to it myself (M7>Note 3> Nexus 5). I ordered an M8 but.. problems with delivery + CPW being idiots I cancelled it.. however I'm in two minds still as to switch to the S5 or the M8.

I got offered all three for the S5, so it was kind of a no brainer. I'm now toying with the idea of trading the iPhone for another S5, and trading the Note 3 for an iPhone, seems long winded but that's the only option. I need an android phone and a phone with iOS.
Regarding the lag, I've read a few places (reviews also) that it can be pretty bad, how true is it? - surely a phone with such a high spec shouldn't lag even with TW bloat?
Where did you get this offer? I'd happily part with my s5 for those 3!

I got the S5 Yesterday, and it FLIES! This is my First Samsung phone, not a fan of the UI really, but came from HTC, figured I would go this way and I am happy so far. The Phone is super fast, though, but then again coming from an Evo LTE is a huge jump, even though that phone I LOVED!

Where is this "a lot of lag" coming from? I just don't have it and am curious where it's coming from.

Well, I've owned one for about a week now and I don't have all this lag that some people are talking about. Sure there might be a tiny hiccup here and there and some of the native apps take a second or two to open up from a cold start, but I don't have any major issues.
It is nothing out of the ordinary and it's an overall fast and smooth device.

It's all simulated lag. Turn off double click to start S-Voice. Disable My Magazine. Turn all animations down to 0.5x and BOOM, "lag" gone.
I actually did this side by side with the M8. I noticed the M8 was ridiculously fast at opening and switching between apps and the S5 was always slightly behind. After changing the animations on the S5 to 0.5x, BAM same speed.
I went to the s5 from the s3, as I skip every other galaxy. (s1-s3-s5). I have to say, what a difference between this and the s3. Dont get me wrong, they are both similar. But a 1080p amoled is stunning, the phone also feels great and is a beast. Also, not sure why so many people are complaining about the finger scanner, I can easily unlock using one hand and my thumb. Great phone !

I'm trying your tip. There's some lag in the s5, I can't deny it. I didn't have that with my n5. TW probably doesn't help here, although this is an awesome phone.

Make sure to reboot your phone too. Phone was laggy as hell when first booted. The only thing that is a little slow for my taste is opening the multitasking list.

I can't wait for the customs ROMS, I'm not used to TW really, When opening phone it's not that smooth and some little stuff.

Personally I think it's a fair trade off. I had the M7 and it has bare bones software features. If they would have added more software functions like multi window I probably would have got the M8. Realistically the M8 is the M7 with a depth sensor. They didn't really need to upgrade the processor because it ran fine on the 600 chipset. At least I know Samsung is trying to utilize the power of the 801 chipset.

If I use apex launcher I take it I don't need to bother going into touchwiz and disabling My Magazine?

When people see new devices it's like an ora of "I want" - you'd be surprised what some people would offer for something so that they can get their hands on it straight away. Crazy offers aren't that uncommon tbh.

Always on Display

I have noticed the Note 7 always on is WAYYY brighter than the S7 Edge always on.
Anyway to change that?
What about screen burn in, do we think there will be a problem?
I had the same question. I don't want to turn it off but it's really bright.
Sent from my SM-N930T using Tapatalk
Same here way too bright. I turned it off until there is a fix. Wish we could adjust it to personal preferences.
there's a 70mb international patch that samsung has released with a few bug fixes and improvements. the screen brightness might be part of the improvements. wont know til tmobile decides to push the patch to us. but as far as burn in goes i wouldnt worry about that. if you notice the always on screen moves position up and down your screen. this prevents burn in.

Unless you're using a S View cover, mine doesn't move (not that I've noticed anyway) ... Was a little concerned myself. I have an LG OLED display, the 65" EF9500, I know it's not as prone to burn in as compared to plasma, but the TV will run a screen clean cycle when powered down after every 10 hours of use, or there about... Not sure if the Note does anything behind the scenes to prevent or deal with possible IR ..

Mine DOES NOT move either.
Also there was an update today in the Galaxy Apps for the always on display. From what I can tell not much of a change
I believe the movement is 1 pixel every 10 minutes, random jump every 60 minutes. Is that not the case anymore?

it does move. and you're probably right about the time of the movement. the ppl that dont see it move are probably expecting it to move within 30s of them looking at it. it takes some time for it to move. over the past 2 hours mine was at the bottom of my screen it is now in the middle of my screen.

No you won't face an issue with screen burn in! That's an lcd screen issue with the pixels! You won't see that issue on your QHD display!

Lol wut? You got that backward. AMOLED *DOES* get burn in. LCD only occasionally suffers from image retention but that's temporary.
