Replacing Nexus 7 2013 tablet. - Off-topic

Since google is not supporting the nexus 7 anymore and it seems like alot of the devs here are going away from it. I was wondering what replaced the nexus 7 2013? What is a good tablet with the same or faster specs as the Nexus 7 2013 and price range. It also has to have alot of support on here XDA with rooting, recovery, roms and mods also an easy to unlock bootloader. I was thinking on getting the nvidia shield tablet but it's old been out since 2014 but it might also be coming to an end plus it don't have alot of roms and mods for it. So any suggestions would be helpful.

Any help at all please.

throw some light on me about nexus 7

Guys I'm planning to buy nexus 7 but I'm really confused
Here are.my few questions.
1) What's the difference between nexus 7 original development and nexus 7 android development?
2 Nexus 7 isn't cheap in india. its price is 350$ us and ipad mini same. I like nexus because of my android experience and ability to install custom thing
I wanted to put ubuntu on it directly but reports say its unstable. Also I found multirom installer quitting difficult on samsung and sony devices rooting was way easier. So what should I do?
3) what will be restrictions with iphone I will face? never used ios devices personally.
I hope you guys understand what I mean and throw light on it.
Answer to Number 1
You can just click in both sections and you will definitely see the differences.
Answer to Number 2
If what you want can not satisfied you, then wait for it. Wait for ubuntu become as stable as you wish.
I think rooting process on any device will be not too hard, but require a bit of average work.
Answer to Number 3
You already answer this question yourself, when you said you like the android ability to install custom thing. Here you go. It's android. You can do anything you want.
Nexus 7 and Iphone are very different in my opinion. Just go to an Apple store in India, and find out.

There was a thread here about N5 being based on motoX and another one on G2..
why would you make another thread? do we really need a bunch of posts saying the same thing?
Besides, unless you have solid info, your title is VERY misleading
rumors are only rumors not facts. Don't believe caca!

The source is a forum post at The Verge? I think we should just wait until there is a real rumor based on actual information before wasting our time discussing this.
Forget speed worry about battery innovation and utilize the front bezel as a solar panel

As long as this thread is still open, I'll chime in. All I really want in the next Nexus is a better camera than the one the N4 is cursed with. Anything else would be gravy.

I hope it isn't 5 inch screen. Don't know what peoples fascination with bigger is better. I hope it stays under 5

If it will be Motorola, I hope it will sell in EU too !!!
Not sure why there is a need for a Google Edition Moto X, the phone is pretty much AOSP with a few tweaks.
In my opinion tweaks for the better.

This. I'm really wanting the next Nexus device, but if it is larger than my One X I won't even consider it. I'm about to buy the Nexus 4 just so I can have a Nexus phone that's a manageable size. I'd actually love for the new Nexus to be Moto X based, but I highly doubt it. Droid Mini would be even better. Damn Motorola and Verizon for locked bootloaders!
Edit: And now I'm the proud owner of a new Nexus 4. The price drop was irresistible.

LG G3 got Lollipop faster than Nexus 5. What's the point of owning a Nexus device?

Some nexus device owner bought nexus device(s) because they want to get the first taste of the new android software update. This time, Google seemed to broke their promise by delaying the update for Nexus 5 and letting LG G3 owners get their hands on Lollipop before Nexus 5 owners do And there's a big chance that the new moto x owners will too.
Not to mention now that many OEMs are promising more and more faster software update (moto, sony, htc, and now LG), do you guys think it's still worth it to own a Nexus device? I know there's still the other factor such as vanilla android, but that's it.

I bought my Nexus 5 because at $350 it was the best deal. Faster updates was secondary since I run a third party ROM on my phone. IMO it's great that LG, Moto, and HTC has=ve committed to faster updates and hopefully the other OEMs follow suit.
Also let's not forget the fact that we've had access to Lollipop since Google I/O 2014 (June) when they released the Developer Preview while the other guys didn't.
Sigh. Did you forget we got a dev preview(s)? Did you miss the memo about there being bugs and that that's why it's delayed? A nexus device will still always be pure android. So no, I don't care that other OEM's are pushing it out faster. If fact that's a good thing for Android. For years Google has been trying to do what you're complaining about. It's only a week or two. In fact I hope it still happens, just so I can be amused by threads such as this.
I'd imagine all future incremental releases come faster to the nexus line than oems ...so I'll just wait...plan on getting a nexus 6 anyways...and who knows how long that will take lol
I think its a good thing OEMs are pushing out Android L so quickly.... so many OEMs don't update there phones at all or if they do its 5-7 months after a new release of android. In my opinion this is great news for Android. I would rather Google sit on the Lollipop for N5 and get the bugs resolved first then release it. Even if it means a month. I mean we have had the Dev preview since June, after all this time is it going to kill anyone to wait a little longer? I think everyone needs to calm down. I am enjoying this build of Lollipop:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...-android-lpv-dev-n5-enhanced-t2856934/page796
And it has been running excellent. So big thank you to al the devs who are working hard on these Android L roms. And when Google get official L out there we will all benefit from it, but in good time when Google feels its in tip top shape for the masses.
We need a new sub forum for rants!!
It really is great that oems are able to push out updates so soon.
Really don't see a point of ppl making new threads for this..

no kind sir, as a matter of fact this is not a rant. the purpose of my thread is to see whether people really see a downgrade value in owning a Nexus device, since one of the main perks of owning a Nexus device is to be the first device to get a new Android software. and since it is true that we did get the developer preview, it couldn't be said that it was usable as a daily driver.
If the choice of words that i used in this thread may cause a confusion that some people think this is a rant thread, then i beg your pardon since my English is not sufficient enough.
I bought a N5 because it was a great price and I like pure Android. Is it really that big a deal that some other phone got updated a few days before the N5 did? People get way too nuts over updates. The N5 will have it soon, I promise.

First world problems.......
I didn't buy it to be first to get updates....I bought it as a great value smartphone first and foremost, it still regardless of updates you know
I didn't buy it for the updates. I'm not upset by others releasing a bugged aosp source. It is a good thing for the ecosystem that the OEMS are releasing updates so quickly. Would you rather have update after quick update due to bugs, or one pretty solid release. No other line of devices got the official previews. The latest preview has been stable for a daily driver!

You should also read more closely. The article you are getting your information clearly stated lg is trying it in Poland not the US out any other major market.

If you want to know the reason why I bought a nexus 5? I will answer this in Nov 2015 when Android M comes out and again we wait for its release on our nexus 5s(in 4-5 weeks) while other OEM flagship phones of current age wait in doubt of the release(4-5 months). I bought the device for it's solid software support, not necessarily faster but a solid 2-3 year support official support and most probably a 5 year community support. But then again most people sell the devices 2-3 years down the line.
It's not about other devices getting OTAs faster it's about getting the better of them all. I know this had been mentioned a couple of times before but LG G3 and the Moto X got a test release, something which we received 3-4months back I believe. Google does not abandon it's nexus range device without a proper goodbye.
There are more important things in the world.
It's really rather whether any device has an update. The reason for the delay is known, who would like Lollipop may already have run long.
And then I buy a Nexus because I like Nexus and not to previously have an update maybe a few days. Envy is something really repulsive.
Don't compare 2013 device with 2014 device.
If you really want to compare, please compare LG G3 vs Nexus 6 for 2014, which one is faster to get Lollipop.
2013 devices are LG G2 vs Nexus 5. Which one is faster? :silly:
Are you kidding??!!!!You could install it from 6 month ago.
LG g3 didn't receive anything yet. Just because there was an announcement doesn't mean its released. Besides I hear the nexus 5 gets it on the 12th
I would not trade my nexus 5 for an LG g. Besides, I have been running android l for months. Sure, it's great that os like lg and Motorola are taking the available 5.0 software and porting it to their devices, this is great for everyone.... but that software they are using is no further forward than is currently available for nexus devices.... They aren't getting a finished version.
What's the point in buying a nexus? That's something only you can decide for yourself. Buy what ever takes your fancy at the time

For me faster updates were the most important thing than came the hardware specs..
The real question is when will the g2 get the updates g3 being the latest and greatest from LG is getting the update but the older devices will not get it for some time. However the nexus 4 and 5 are not the latest still they will get the update very soon. So if you plan on getting the latest flagship devices you don't need to worry about updates that much but if you plan on keeping your device for a few years nexus is still a great proposition.

[Q] Roms & Developers Waiting Room

I'm new to Nexus forums. I've been a Samsung phone owner for some time now so I'm not familiar with the developers on the Nexus side.
Just starting this thread to see of at least rumors of Rom Developers that will be here in the Nexus 6 forum.
Has anyone heard of developers coming to this Nexus 6 forum? Hoping Rom development starts soon :good:
As its a Nexus device a lot of developers will be developing ROMs for it.. Just have patience..

They'll come. I know franciscofranco will be bringing Franco Kernel to the Nexus 6, his device will be coming in next month and I'll be helping him out testing blind builds. No promises about public releases but you won't be disappointed with development on Nexus devices when it comes to custom ROMs and kernels.
Faux on Twitter confirmed that he'll be getting the N6 as well.
Euphoria (formerly known as Mahdi ROM) will be getting N6 treatment as well (as confirmed on Google+) https://plus.google.com/communities/116795582851167273031
CM12 will obviously be on the N6.

sweet. Thanks for the heads up. Feels good being here already. I traded up my Note 4 for the N6 so good things coming sounds like :good:
Yes i still have my nexus 5, and iPhone 6, and decided to get a Nexus 6.. I play both sides of the fence... But the techie in me loves android as you have more control over your device. Ill be picking up a Nexus 9 as well once the LTE model comes out. Then i may start to unload my various devices....

Beginner with Nexus

So first hello everyone I just joined this community
I am actually just getting my first android phone, and I was looking around for something interesting
and found out that there is a phone like Nexus 5 which is capable of running all sorts of different OSes
like ubuntu, sailfish, firefox, android of course,... But since nexus 5 is a phone from 2013 I just didn't like the
idea of getting a phone which could become obsolete this very year in terms of specs.
So I was wondering where is Nexus 6 compared to Nexus 5 in terms of running all these differenet OSes,
and generaly in its support for modding and such...
thx

Well it has many custom ROM options as does Nexus5, official multirom, first to get updates etc.. But unfortunately, it doesn't have Firefox or Ubuntu or sailfish. They're made by multirom developer and I dont think there's been much done w those. I've tried them on my nexus 7 and wasn't impressed. So I wouldn't run it even if were offered. 6 is bigger but as far as specs.. That's when I hit Google. Lol
Got a 6,2013 7, 2013 7 LTE. I love my nexus. Can't go wrong. I still have the galaxy nexus from years ago.

Putting aside the issue of running non-Android OSes -- which comment #2 covers pretty well -- both the N5 and the N6 support Android-based custom roms very well. Both have unlocked bootloaders so you can load anything that will run on the hardware and flash a factory image of stock Android so you're back to where you started (including going back to various earlier Android versions.)
I've had a Nexus 5 since December, 2013 and it's been excellent -- A++. And I don't think it will be obsolete for at least another year (meaning we'll have updates from Google.) Add to that the exceptional value: you can pick up a new one on eBay for about $200 -- I think -- don't hold me to it.
I've also had a Nexus 6 since March of this year and, while I'm happy with it and wouldn't send it back, I must say that it has some issues. It has run very hot a few times. Read some reviews -- they're not all good. Plus, it's much more expensive than the N5. I like them both but, considering price, the N5 blows away the N6, IMHO.
Ah I see, well I think I'll first have to check them out hands on because N6 by specs seems to be huge and everyone says so, while looking on the pictures it doesn't really seems like that and I have used phones with 4 inch screens until now so really not sure about this ??

The more you use it, the better you'll like it!
