New to BLU R1 - BLU R1 HD Questions & Answers

I just ordered this phone and had some questions:
Will Nova launcher work on it?
Has anyone use Titanium Backup to restore user apps?
Thanks

Nova works great. I haven't used Titanium Backup yet, but no reason why it shouldn't work. I believe others have reported using it in these forums with no problems.

Be careful not to let it update automatically, or you won't be able to root, remove ads, or flash anything. Do not connect to wifi or phone network until after you have disabled updates.

How do I disable updates?

The safest way is to just not put in your phone service's network SIM and don't configure it to connect to your wifi network. The first thing I did with mine was to follow Colton's excellent instructions to flash it to non-Prime, unlock, root it, and install twrp.

Agree with the no network until you confirm its either already been updated and not able to get Amazon off it, or strip it down before it gets online. Mine came out of the box, skip through setup, check version, rom and root and debloat, reboot, shut down, then sim card and wifi.

Did that to my new R1 last night and it's running OEM v12 now ad-free. I have a Nexus 6P running Android 7.1 beta so I find Blu 6.0 obsolete. Is Amazon's ROM any better? I would at least like to have 6.01 to get rid of the wifi battery drain bug.

Obsolete is a pretty strong word. It works fine. I'm on android 6.0 and the battery life is acceptable for me. If you need the latest version every minute, you don't get to have a $60 phone.

@gotcha640,there are probably a couple of hundred git commits between Blu 6.0 and the latest AOSP 6.0.1 including security patches which Blu ignores.
I am fine with using Marshmallow instead of Nougat. It's just that I want the latest build. I'd love CM13 nightlies on this $60 phone.

[Q] Unlocked 4.4.2 worth upgrading to 4.4.4?

So I've recently unlocked the bootloader thanks to SunShine. I previously froze the Moto updater app in Titanium so as not to continually receive prompts to upgrade. Since I'm not unlocked, rooted and have TWRP running.. Would it be worth my time to upgrade to 4.4.4?
1. What are the benefits or drawbacks of upgrading or is it so minor I'm barely going to notice a difference?
2. I don't want to screw anything up. I want my Xposed apps and everything I have now running great.
3. If I do upgrade is it difficult to re-root (assuming I will indeed lose root) or is it as simple as reinstalling SuperSU?
4. Is "okay Google Now" any faster? I'd use it more if it wasn't so incredibly slow.
5. I assume there will be no data wipe if I upgrade, correct?
6. Is it even worth it to upgrade? Better cell service? Faster or slower os?
Side Question: Can anybody recommend good WiFi Hotspot app now that I'm unlocked and rooted?
Sent from my Moto X
You can upgrade and flash custom recovery and root on any Android version now.
Will 4.4.4 change much? No. But there's no reason not to. You may need it for future X feature updates perhaps. Not sure.
Supposedly 4.4.4 lowered Android O/S battery usage, though my wifes 4.4.2 is fine... So again, up to you.
I don't see how updating will hurt anyway. But... Once you do, there's no going back.
Also on 4.4.2 AT&T unlocked through Chinese, have been planning to update to 4.4.4 now that it's rolled out to AT&T, mostly to see if the supposed camera improvements are better, and though I don't use the video recorder, I like that they added the pause (I was surprised when I couldn't find it)
I believe I just need to uninstall xposed, unfreeze any system apps, flash stock recovery, take the update, and reinstall TWRP

New Fire - what to do?

So I'm getting my new Fire tablet tomorrow, got it at the $35 sale...
Planning to not allow it to connect to WiFi till I can load Google Play and disable OTA using the script given here (already did it on another one and it worked great) so it doesn't get 5.1.1.
Two questions:
1. How can I tell if it's running 5.0.0 or 5.0.1 (without doing the software update check obviously...)
(also not sure how to see it once OTA is disabled, any other place it shows up?)
2. If it's on 5.0.0. can I sideload the 5.0.1 image using ADB, seems that I should be on that version to get Google Play to work OK.
Thanks
I think Amazon is shipping these new ones with 5.1.1, but if they don't, just go to the latest 5.0.1 in RootJunky's video. After that is done, just skip the part in Setup which requires you to connect to Wi-Fi, disable the OTA Apks, and connect to Wi-Fi. You should be set from there, and you can do whatever modifications you want.

Any reports of people receiving Fire's preloaded with 5.1.1?
First things first... Don't connect to wifi and disable ota updates.. Root.. Flash cm12.1 and never look back!
@87racer would love if you could capture the 5.1.1 update for us!

thanks @tuckerwagner, looks like we @p0lt just posted one for us. downloading now, should help us discern what happens during the 5.1.1 upgrade and maybe recover our bricks.

SWEET! I'd help but in don't know where to even start. Good luck!
The update from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1 isn't instantaneous. The device has to download the new version before installing it. Check your version and if it starts to download 5.1.1, just turn off your wifi. It will say "Download paused." Then disable OTAs or flash one of the two ROMs.
That said, it is highlyunlikely that you would get one that is still on 5.0.0. The one I got last week was already on 5.0.1
register it first so you can contact support for a replacement if it is "defective"... for my $35 fire all you had to do was enable adb, reboot to fastboot, and continue from there. Didn't mess with the fire OS at all except for registering the device.

Update:
Got the Fire tablet and this is what I did if you want to try the same:
1. Turned on the device
2. Skipped configuration process when it asked me to connect to WiFi
3. Setting->Devicve options->System update confirmed I'm on 5.0.1 (yey) it can't update obviously since WiFi is not connected, so I'm safe for now
4. Use the 1-click script to install google play, remove ads (http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/installing-google-framework-playstore-t3216122)
5. Disable OTA using the same script (menu option 3)
6. Reboot
7. Install Gmail (cause later there's a stage where native email app doesn't work...) and email myself the pre downloaded fire launcher (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3528797&d=1446499184) which will fix it
8. Replace launcher, using the launcher replace script (http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/alternative-launcher-one-click-script-t3239966)
9. install fire launcher apk (because otherwise some stuff doesn't work) - and choose not to use it when clicking the home button
What's left?
1. Didn't root <any reason to root?>
2. Write access to SD card is reported not to work, didn't try that yet... maybe by the time I need it someone will solve it
3. Hope that OTA won't happen and disabling worked... (something is probably done right, because if you try to check for update it says that updates are disabled...) hopefully that's good enough...
4. Say thanks to sd_shadow, ChrBeck, and Awesomeslayerg for the information they provided as well as many others participating in this forum... so Thanks.

1. Personal choice, but ad blocking alone makes root essential for me.
2. Oh and the SDfix app on Play store needs root for that matter... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix
3. You can now flash the 5.1.1 update as seen in the http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/howto-install-fireos-5-1-1-root-gapps-t3265594 thread so wouldn't need to worry about the current update at least.

Marshmallow for the Vivo XL kind of sucks....

So Blu finally released the Marshmallow update for the Vivo XL... and it kind of sucks. It's only 6.0 and not 6.0.1. The Gionee model of this phone has been running 6.0.1 since June. Updating via the OTA was a nightmare. It failed 3 times before it finally worked. Then I performed a factory reset, as always when performing a major update. It seems that you cannot format the memory card to use it as internal storage. It gives you the option but it ALWAYS fails. Also, the battery life blows. I lost 20% battery overnight while the phone was inactive and supposed to be dozing. Very disappointing so far. Anyone else have any problems?
My update failed several times but that was about he only problems I've faced. After a factory reset everything seems to be working fine. I am able to use my micro SD as internal as well. No other problems at all with what you mentioned. Everything seems to run smoother than it did on lollipop (but that could be as a result of the factory reset).
I'd love the upgrade if it didn't break compatibility with one crucial app. Until the issue of false root positives is addressed, I'm sticking to lollipop.
my wife's phone updated first try, didn't even feel the need to factory reset it after it came up, so far buttery smooth and better battery life, i think like 1 % over night sitting there and moderate use she got a few days out of her phone. so far i'm happy
My Vivo XL updated with no problems. However, i have noticed that it runs slower than before when viewing Netflix or listening to music, even though i only have 2 or 3 other apps opened at the same time. I usually have to free up more RAM to get it to work properly but i never had this problem when the phone was running Lollipop. Can be irritating at times because even some websites will lag or typing text messages can be slow because the lag time is ridiculous.

Yeah. I'm the OP. After a couple days, the update settled in. Battery life went back to normal, which is to say, stellar. So basically, all good here.

Extreme mode is also impressive don't know if you've seen it. Do you know if there is root yet? I've attempted king root but it fails and I don't want to brick this phone trying to F with other methods
I'm also running 6.0 and it seems to be working great. Much smoother and better battery life. Does anyone know of a method to root the Vivo XL running 6.0 yet?
Good afternoon guys, I have a problem, to update mi Blu vivo XL to Marshmallow the official BLU site says that my version number should be : BLU_V0030UU_V10. I am a little confused about this version number. That is the number in the Wireless update? I have this Current number in Wireless update BLU_V0030UU_V07_GENERIC_5.1_20160126-1033, but when I have tried to check for updates I can't install nothing, this message appears " Your system was damaged, wireless update is disabled". I don't know what to do, I can't install the update via Wireless update, Is there any other method like manually transfer a file? If it is possible, where can I find the file and what is the file name?

I also have this issue. probably because of being rooted. However even I restored original ROM backup and original recovery, I still got such information and cannot do OTA update.
it works correctly , the system is smooth and everything is fine , maybe You a have a rooted device try reflashing and redownload the update

Same here, my android 6.0 version was v07. Oddly enough, the first OTA update is v10. But then the next OTA update took the label back to V07. I reverted back to android 5.1 stock rom, since that was the only way I could get TWRP to load.
How can I go back to the lollipop update ???
Pls I need you guys to help me
I'm using BLU vivo XL, I flashed my phone through stock recovery and I wiped cache & format the phone then rebooted the phone, ever since then its been writing invalid imei, I checked the baseband and it's not showing anymore, I've tried to fix this but no way, I later downloaded the stock ROM and reflashed the phone still its showing invalid imei, I wanted to download Gionee S plus stock firmware but dunno if it's gonna fix the problem, pls I need guys to guide me on how best to fix this issue, its been two weeks + now, God bless.
someone share marshmallow for vivo xl (blu vivo xl v0030uu)

Questions about OTA updates, internet connectivity for unlocked Turbo

Hello all!
I've been looking around the forum for answers to my questions, but I'm still pretty unsure, and I'm worried about messing up my phone, so if someone could hold my hand a little bit, I would appreciate it so much!
When the marshmallow update came out, I unlocked my bootloader with Sunshine and installed TWRP and rooted. I'm currently on stock 6.0.1 and September 1, 2016 security patch.
Issue #1: Ever since I unlocked/rooted/updated to marshmallow I've had problems with some of my apps deciding they can't connect to the internet, even though WiFi and 4G are clearly connected. Like I'll be able to browse the internet on Chrome just fine, but the Amazon app won't connect.
From what I've read, it seems like a problem a lot of people have had after upgrading to marshmallow, but I'm still worried it's because I'm unlocked or rooted or have Xposed installed or something.
Restarting the phone seems to be the only thing that really makes the apps work again (temporarily). I read somewhere about clearing the cache from recovery and that seemed to have fixed the problem for a couple of months, but lately I've been having the problem again, and clearing the cache isn't helping beyond having to restart my phone to do it.
Issue #2: I've been scared to take the OTA security updates.. I've generally gathered that they won't relock my bootloader, but I'm unclear on if it's ok to take the updates OTA or if I have to download and install them through TWRP.
Also, do I even need those updates? Call me stupid, but I'm not that worried about security (the only thing I own is a massive amount of student debt, go ahead and take it =P). I'm really just hoping the updates fix the internet thing.. is that a possibility?
So overall I guess I'm asking, will taking the updates OTA wreck my stuff, and is there a chance updating will fix my internet connectivity problem?
Or will using a different ROM possibly fix my internet problem? If so, which ROM would you recommend? I used to have a Razr M with the latest (at the time) CM ROM, but I couldn't use Bluetooth and WiFi at the same time, so it kind of left a bad taste in my mouth about custom ROMs...
Any answers or advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!
If you have TWRP installed, NEVER take an OTA. You will bootloop or brick your phone. Instead just install the TWRP flashable version from this forum.
This is what you would flash, via TWRP if you want the latest firmware while keeping custom TWRP recovery.

Perhaps re-flashing your modem might help? It's also at that thread. TWRP flashable version.

As for custom ROMs, for you who is not that experienced I would suggest this one:
Computerfreek274_1.0.8 Update Marshmallow 6.0.1 Global,De-bloated,Root,Volte, 5/29/17
https://forum.xda-developers.com/dr.../computerfreek274mm1-0-android-6-0-1-t3503634
It's actually a tweaked, debloated version of Verizon stock Marshmallow firmware. Everything will still work, including Verizon VoLTE (on Verizon, of course, not other networks). Has slight volume boost, battery optimization, etc.
And of course, lots of experienced users are also running that ROM. I do not mean to criticize it in any way, but you just mentioned that you ran some ROM where some stuff didn't work. This is a ROM built on stock, not CM/LOS based. Nothing much has been changed, just bloatware removed and some tweaks.
No worries, that ROM sounds perfect!
Thank you very much for all of your help!!

There's a complete TWRP flashable update to the latest '5-5' firmware. Saves you the time of putting stock recovery back on and taking it OTA. The TWRP flash won't install the stock recovery, TWRP will stay. There's also a zip to clear/reset the radio/modem. You may not need that due to updating the rom.

So just an update for anyone who might come across this thread later.. I ended up flashing the ComputerFreek ROM suggested by ChazzMatt (didn't clean install, just wiped cache). It worked great, and so far I haven't had any more problems with apps not being able to connect!
Thank you to ChazzMatt, ComputerFreek, Einsteindks, and the wonderful XDA community for all your help

Update from 6.5

When I first got this Blu R1 HD Prime version I was able to remove the ads and such by using the SP tool and directions here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/r1-hd/development/blu-r1-hd-remove-amazon-ads-ota-updates-t3427303. It is currently on 6.5. I have never updated it since then because I did not want to deal with ads again. Now I am having issues with it not wanting to connect to any mobile data (wifi is fine though and the sim card works in another phone) I figured an update might not hurt things. So with all that said, what is the best way to get the phone updated without bringing the ads back and not losing any data/apps?

Not knowing what is causing the data connection problems, it is not positive making update will help, but worth a shot.
I have posted updates that can be installed without being forced back into the ads system.
Will need to install TWRP recovery to install them.
Rooting the system is not needed to remove ads with twrp installed, if you do not want to have room rooted.
Since you are on 6.5 and not 6.6 you can use spft to flash recovery, or you can also use the dirty-cow method "tool" to unlock bootloader and then install recovery with fastboot(built into the tool )
If you don't have recovery then my opinion is use this to get recovery installed
https://forum.xda-developers.com/r1-hd/how-to/unlock-tool-t3561333
Then use twrp to install one of these ROMs (recommend v21)

in my case two amzn 8.7 will show that it recognize sim, but no service, would need root to try and change IMEI, probably these phones are from a batch reported lost or stolen, but to be blacklist even in my country, a bit farfetched.

could just be an APN setting needs set to your carrier number/ settings.
Rebooting about a dozen times seems to have fixed it. I double checked the APN and everything but nothing worked. It just started working again. However I do still want to update it just to make sure it has more recent bug fixes. Thanks all.
