Screen uniformity issues - OnePlus 3 Guides, News, & Discussion

I'm not sure how many of you experience this issue, but I definitely run in to it now and again especially when using the XDA app coincidentally. On certain grey tones at low brightness and in night mode, you can get situations where you know that the screen should be a uniform gray but it just isn't. I get some areas of the screen that are definitely darker than others. It's not noticeable usually during the day or even most of the time at night, but it bothers me that it exists at all. This was a much bigger problem on some of the initial units and is much less of a problem now. It really makes minimal functional issues but this doesn't seem to be a problem with other amoleds. A bit disconcerting quirk of my favorite smartphone.

I noticed this when I got my OP3 back in June, I wanted to contact OnePlus about this and get an exchange but didn't seem worth waiting another 3 weeks for a phone. Someone on the forum got an instant replacement though.

I sold mine because of this.

I sent it to replacement 2 weeks ago. The new one is on its way though. It should arrive some time this week, hopefully with no problems.

Yeah mine has the same issue, not sure what to do

My phone is manufactured in August 2016, just noticed it yesterday - when the screen should be dark, left/top side of the screen seems to be lit little bit more - lighter gray than the rest of the screen.

Going to root in a couple of days, normally would just would send back, but don't want the ball ache of waiting a couple of weeks for a replacement. Should be able to minimise with different themes

Got my replacement phone, also with the issue but less noticeable. I think I'm gonna stay with it.
EDIT: Forgot to tell that in the previous the problem was 'top-to-bottom' and in the new one it's 'left-to-right'.

One persons humble opinion...

Knock on wood....I seem to have gotten a great phone. No yellowing, no scratches, ear quality is good and the rattle is imperceptable. Beyond that, the phone is amazing. I have very little complaints and they are nothing to do with the phone. I don't like the clock on the lock screen......but again that's not the phone. Its fast, sleek, comfortable, and just downright......right. To all of you complaining, I'm sorry your device is not the be all end all. That said, my wife will be getting one 4-5 weeks. As a side note, I ordered on the 13th, b/o email on the 15th. I got shipping confirmation with the second wave. Received it yesterday the 27th.

I received mine yesterday too and I love it. It is so fast and smooth, it's insane.
Coming from a Galaxy S2 with a 800x480 resolution to an IPS 1280x768 resolution. The change is mind-boggling.
I really love this phone. The last time I was so in love with the design of a gadget was when I got my Sony Clie NX80v. Not even mine iPad (which I think is gorgeous) doesn't even match up. IMO. I'm just in love with all the detailed designs of the phone. Rounded edge of the screen, the glittery back, the notification light. Everything.
I know how you feel. I am totally in love with my nexus to. I received it on the 27th as well. From the screen to the design, the notification sounds, the feel, the weight, even the camera has been impressive at times. I love the touch buttons. Gaming is great. Also I did a tweak and my HSDPA speeds are blistering fast.

I got mine last night at around 8:30pm so I am still getting used to it but so far I am truly amazed. I hope the op doesn't mind me posting my review. I know if I created a thread it would just be closed. N This happens every time I create a thread here.
After reading the complaints here I expected a rattling, yellowing, battery dying, bug filled phone that looks nice.
Instead I found a beautiful device. The rattling had been so exaggerated and granted that maybe others are really worse, mine only rattles of trying to make it do so. It is nothing.
In regards to the glass breaking on its own or scratching by just having it on your pocket, etc.. It seemed possible to me before b but now that I have the phone out seems very unlikely. I just am not buying that this glass is super weak. I am not saying a drop will not break it. I just really cannot understand how it could break on its own the person carrying it knowing.
The yellowing, when viewed at extreme angles is the only time I see any color change and it is not nearly add bad as I thought it was going to be. I have not deliberately tried to get it hot, I have not done benchmarks. So far the screen in the most accurate and crisp display I have ever seen. This is the first smart phone i have been able to actually see outside in the sun. I was out earlier. I just turned up the brightness to not even half and I had no trouble.
Speaking of brightness, I have heard complaints from people seeing spots of yellow with full brightness. I honestly cannot understand why anyone would use this phone at full brightness. It seems so bright and sharp to me even at half brightness.
I have not had it the phone but I think the battery life issues have also been exaggerated in a negative way. I was pleasantly surprised to find the battery doing very well. I had maybe 74% at 8:30 when I turned it on for the first time. I spoke on the phone for 45 minutes, had Google install all my apps, I used blue tooth, android beam, and had GPS on the entire time and when I finally went to bed at around 3am the battery was at 60%. This seemed amazing.
I hooked up the charger when I went to bed. FYI-i keep the box and let it sit in the cut out while charging or anytime I put it down. I put it there to charge and when I got up at 5:15 it was full. I have no complaints so far about the battery out anything else.
Ok, the one issue did have was after I had just set up my tmob account was the signal quality. I was in my basement office when I called simple mobile. I had a very bad connection. This was less than 10 minutes after I activated. I always had great reception with my i9001 s plus.. What is really strange though is that I just tested call quality a f minutes ago from my office and now the quality and reception is perfect. Maybe it took time for the signal to sync or something.. Not sure but it seems fine now..
Last thing is hspa speeds..I am currently using the tmob APN that was default on the device so who knows if this is even correct but upstairs I got download speed of around 10.5 mb and upload I can't remember but it was not so great. GPS and WiFi seem normal..
All in all I am really happy with this phone and it was really with ask the **** we went through.
I wanted to mention that I found some type of a you gel case at amazon yesterday for .47 .. Not a typo.. 47 cents!! The same case was selling for $12.. Just search amazon and set your max price filter low. This price may have been changed by now though. Oh yeah, shopping was less than $3.. I figured I would use this until i get the bumper. I may also put a transparent even protector on the back..
Thanks all.. So glad I finally got this!!! Did I say this phone is blistering fast??? Smooth... Also, the touch screen works perfectly for me. I can see some having an imaginary issue due to comparing a number on a test app that is not even meant for this type of a screen but numbers aside, the touch even would perfectly and I did not notice any issue at all.. Don't listen to all of the complaints.. Many are over exaggerated.. some are lies..
Holy **** Batman!! This is my longest post ever on XDA!!!!

[Q] ridiculous screen wake lag

This issue is present in both sony models (xperia Z & ZL). I put my ZL side by side with my old at&t branded DUAL CORE galaxy s3, a nexus 4 (same exact processor), an iphone 5, and an at&t branded htc one.... my brand new crazy expensive ZL takes WAY longer to wake up from sleep then ALL OF THEM. Every one of these phones had a BIG LEAD over my phone. How is there not a thread about this already? When I saw my old GS3 woke up way faster I was sad.... but when I saw how fast the htc one screen woke up I was straight up embarrassed. What are the odds this issue will be resolved? Developers on this forum are very capable and willing to work hard but to an extent. With so much stiff competition I have to ask how many developers will invest their time into even looking into this issue. I have tried every rom/kernel available to me at the moment to no avail. I have tried changing every setting and even eliminated the lock screen... no change. I tried raising the min. cpu speed... nothing.
To make matters worse every single one of the phones I compared my ZL to had better viewing angles and a brighter screen then the POS screen sony decided to cheap out on and stick in this phone. WHAT IS THE POINT OF HIGH PPI IF I CANT SEE ANYTHING ON THE SCREEN UNLESS I HAVE MY PROTRACTOR OUT TO MAKE SURE IM LOOKING AT THE EXACT RIGHT ANGLE. Sony should give you a free protractor key chain with the purchase of this phone I heard about this in reviews but never took it seriously because I didnt realize the extent of the issue. If I look at my phone just slightly off angle the colors are washed out and if its sitting on the table and im looking down on it from my desk the screen is 50% washed out and some colors are muted.
I hear the htc one x had the same wake lag issues and it was resolved via a software update. I wonder if we will be so lucky....
Anyone have any idea or solution to get rid of or at the very least lessen this extremely irritable wake lag?? Let me know !!

To be honest, I don't notice any wake lag on my device. I was using a Note 2 prior to this phone, and there were complaints about the wake lag which I too noticed. Coming to this phone, my screen is quick to wake up. I have no complaints regarding this.
Screen angle, this is something many have been complaining about but I view my device at the normal viewing angle and so far it doesn't bother me. Yes, when I look at my phone while it being on a table, the color do look washed out, but again, nothing too bad. You're complaining about the lack of brightness on the device, however where are you facing such an issue? Indoors or outdoors? I use my device at the lowest brightness and yet it is brighter than my Note 2. I have no complains over the brightness of this device.
My only issue with it is the battery life and the vividness of the color reproduced by the screen, however I am sure it can be improved by software updates.

[Discussion]Screen Burn-In/Stuck Pixel.

Ive seen no threads on this issue so I decided to make one! But I wanted to know if anyone had any! Personally I had one stuck pixel on my tab s. Yet it was really hard to see I later got it fixed by doing a stuck pixel remover video for about a couple of hours and later installed discreet blue theme. Now its not there! I own the tab s 10.5 Wifi.
So... Has anyone else got a stuck pixel or an image burnt into their screen? Let me know below! Could be useful for others buying this tablet!
I've had the Tab S 10.5 LTE since release, use at least 8 hours daily for work and haven't got any issues in terms of the screen degrading like burn in or stuck pixels, have thoroughly checked to be sure, might have just been a one time thing, generally take years for a burn in on Amoled but even then I have had other AMOLED screen devices for years without a problem
No burn ins on my unit as well , im using the 8.4 as my primary phone and gps. Im always at 1/16th brightness. I also have a 4 yr old 7.7 slate, no burn ins as well. Seems like newer amoleds are not that prone to burn ins. Just to add, im using an all black theme.
Somehow (turning brightness all the way up all the time) my friend burned in a new note 2 in about 3 months. He used his phone a LOT as well.
My Tab S (about a month old now, auto brightness below 10-20% using Velis Auto Brightness, not much used) is perfect for now. However I saw the two 10.5" samples heavily burned at the local mobile shop. Also saw two months old Note 4 heavily burned at the same mobile shop. So it seems burn-in problem with this latest amoled screens still remains.
Thank you guys for your response! Yeah turning the brightness up to 75‰ is how I got mine. That was when I first got my tablet and had it on 75% for the whole month. I want to walamrt the other day to see the samples. The screen seem imrpoved from when I got mine. I will try to use a autobrightness app
Thread should now be a discussion thread about the burned in pixels. Guess I made it look like a question. Thanks forum mods for telling me about this problem and moving the thread back!
I assume this thread is for burned-in and stuck pixel questions/discussion?
If so: I just went to a couple of local stores to test out the Tab S, with an intention to bring one home. I didn't so far -- all devices (4 in 2 different shops) had pretty severe burn-in from the demo programs that Samsung installs and runs on the devices in the store. A couple of them so much that it was actually disturbing for things like browsing plain web pages (white background); you could read the "inverted" text that had burned in.
One store anticipated the device had been on for 10 hours a day since somewhere August last year, which would make it around 10*6*40 or about 2.400 hours of use -- presumably close to max output on the display in "demo mode".
This caused me to hesitate... is this a common problem with the devices, particular to early models, or just something that happens if you run it for too high output -- or will it happen eventually to all devices? A life-time of less than 2.000 hours seems quite low to me in any case.
Also, when/if it happens, are there any ways to "reset" the screen again, or is the damage permanent?
I have a ~2 yr old S4 that does NOT have any burn-in, but I also use that much less, not at 100% brightness and usually with varying content on the screen. I guess the display technology is similar even if the Tab S is a much newer device.
I never had burn in problems in any Samsung amoled devices (since S1).
Just made sure box was sealed and auto brightness was always on.
Actually, I personally have a worst experience with LCD with light bleed and other issues.
Yeah, No problems with my 10.5" Wifi , I watch a lot of Animi and always run it fullscreen, so no black bars, also i set brightness to auto -5 when i am using it indoors.
No stuck or dead pixels, fingers crossed.
John.
@pacc @tinderbox(UK): That sounds re-assuring. Sounds like it's still safe to go ahead and acquire the device (in my case probably the 32GB WiFi 10.5" edition). Hopefully this is the general experience by most people then.
On the LCD bleeding, then yes, that can be quite annoying too!
Just be glad you did not buy the 8.4" version as that is having some problems with the display that might affect some people.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/help/tab-s-8-4-screen-homogeneity-issues-t2826661
John
I have 8.4 version and the screen is in perfect condition.
You need to use one of the screen test app to check for any problems with the screen before you buy, or the time runs out for you to return the tablet for a refund.
Some people are not bothered, good for them.
John.
I'll test it out thoroughly while it can still be returned. Thanks for the heads-up on that issue as well
If you really want to find every possible quality problem with the display, view a light gray screen in the dark, using a screen test app , set the brightness to low, look for circles and clouding, as well as dead or hot pixels.

I have an S4 I bought used and have used for about a year. It is getting heavily burned in. I am questioning how long this display will last. Hopefully by the time I need to replace it the screens will be cheap

What was burned-in on your S4 , notification bar?, home screen icons? , were you using an navigator app? , how high did you have you brightness set?
Using an low brightness setting can reduce the change of screen burn-in, but if you live in an sunny country you most likely have the brightness set virtually to max to allow you to see the screen outside.
Thanks
John.

I decided to check for stuck pixels on my Tab S again. Turns out, I have 3 stuck ones now! They are really really tiny that I can even notice them. Took me a minute or so to search for them. In order to see them, you have to use a holo background and not full black ones. You would have to find an dark gray image or something like an inverted app but isn't full black which is a good thing for me I guess. The good thing is that they don't appear on bright colors (red, blue, white, etc) which I personally couldn't see it. A holo background or gray image is when I can see it the most. When I put a black image, its fully black with no stuck pixels in sight. So that could mean they still work and turn on and off fine. So I'm thinking it's just stuck when displaying colors other than black.
I've kept my brightness 1/4 bright all the time, only used it for watching videos and browsing the web mostly. It's been one year since I bought this and I personally don't mind it. This is what I've seen so far
Edit: using a screen filter app to darken the screen on an holo image made it show the most so I can see. This lowest stock brightness doesn't seem to show a lot unless you get close to the screen.
Sent from my SM-T800 using Tapatalk
A couple of weeks ago a guy bought an demo 10.5" and it had an perfect Samsung logo and stripe burned almost across the entire center of the display, the worst i have ever see.
He was asking would burning in the inverted image reduce the burn-in, I found the exact Samsung wallpaper responsible and inverted it for him, but i never heard anymore, it really needed an new screen.

[Q] Want to buy nexus 6, are there still screen issues persisting?

Please help. I am planning to buy nexus 6. I have read a lot about nexus 6 display issues like burn in issues , uneven color, grey lines and lower half of screen freezing. Some say these are present in all devices to variable extent and in most exist in mild form.
Should i get nexus 6 ? does these screen issues still exist?
Else i will buy Galaxy s6

I've had mine since November 2014 and I have none of those issues.
Smooth sailing here
I keep it adaptive 66% brightness and its all good no burn-in that I can see I have noticed some specific apps like chrome cause a weird freeze on the right screen half happens maybe once a month with no pattern (a quick screen off/on fixes it could possibly be a custom kernel thing). Only other thing I'd say is the screen has a very warm color palette by default, I use code blue with kcal 237, 235, 255 to make a cooler feel, there's a thread about it somewhere. I've had mine since February.

The Galaxy S6 has lots more software issues then the N6 atm and besides that i have never personaly had this screen issue. The N6 is a great phone especialy now it is beeing discounted here and there (US and UK).
Been rocking N6 for last 1 month and i am loving it. No issues at all. Like u i was also very concerned to put into huge sum of money into N6 purchase after reading soooooo many discouraging videos and reviews and comments.
But i am using it as my daily driver for like 1 month now and i haven't seen any issue related to screen, battery, or even software. 5.1.1 is very stable.
I keep the adaptive brightness on and brightness level at 50% and i get 4 - 4.5 hours SOT with everything on...including google now, location history, location reporting high accuracy.
No screen burn, no battery swelling, no battery life issues, no screen freezes, bt yes i'll admit the screen colour is more on a warmer side.
I got a Nexus 6 from Google Play and a friend got one from Motorola in June 2015. Both have screen issues, one have vertical banding noticeable on gray or dark backgrounds, the other has a yellow tint and very uneven backlighting. I'm not sure if most have these issues and simply aren't bothered or what. Not sure what to do at this point.
Flawless here
No issues with mine ....
mine works fine never had any of the issues above
No issues for me.

There's no backlighting.
What I meant to say is that strips of the screen are brighter or darker than the rest of the screen and it looks blotchy. If I hadn't viewed a solid gray screen, I might not have noticed but this doesn't make me happy, especially knowing that Android M has a dark theme with lots of grays.
I've had my white 64gb from Motorola since March. Had it replaced once already for the screen tearing issue when running a custom dpi. The replacement I got a month ago does the same. Will be calling again soon

I got a nexus 6 at ATT through the next program a couple months ago. It had banding on the right side of the screen right out of the box. It was pretty discouraging. I took it back and got it swapped for another unit and honestly couldn't be happier. The n6 is an amazing phone.

Screen tearing or half black?
Issues relating to custom DPI happen on them all.
I received mine on 6/18, no issues other than a pink hue at low brightness (with adaptive brightness turned on) which seems to be software based.

Half black, and half freeze, which I've seen be referred to as screen tearing in just about all the posts I could find on it. Funny thing is on every kernel or ROM thread ice asked about it I've been told it does not happen on all of them. Seems many have had their phones replaced and had no issues in the replacement and that has led to people believing it's a hardware issue. Only other explanation I had seen was something about Franco saying it's a possible display driver issue. Sucks that I can't use Franco kernel at AOL because it becomes horrible

The tearing, which by that I mean freezing definitely seems to be a graphics card issue. The half-black if you change the DPI and rotate clockwise so buttons are on the bottom, afaik happens to them all. I think this is related to the GPU to, though I don';t think that is hardware issue. The tearing issue seems to manifest more when the device is warm/hot

The tearing is a graphics card software or hardware issue? I love this phone, but it's getting very frustrating. Especially since my RMA prices with Motorola turned out to be a series of clusterf*cks.
I'm running Chroma right now and with the included Franco it's unusable in both my phones at a lower dpi. Half screen freezes left and right within seconds of starting up. The reasons I initially believed it was software was that it only seems to happen in certain apps. Specifically ones that required a lot of scrolling, like XDA, Facebook, and chrome. But no one else in the thread seems to have the issue
The half black screen I figured had to be software because the soft buttons are still on the screen.
I just wish there was a solid answer so I could stop guessing

I've never had the tearing issue and not everyone has that one. The guys who have had an RMA have generally said that it had stopped the issue happening. Im not sure that has any link to DPI either. My suspician based on not really any evidence at all is that it is hardware related, since some have it and some do not.
The half black is definitely linked to DPI and there is no fix to that that I am aware. I just turn that rotation mode off so I can only go anti-clockwise.

The weird thing with me with the tearing is it only happens in certain situations and has been consistent across both devices I had. Certain kernels I get it, other ones I do not. Franco has been unusable for me on both. It has only happened at lower dpi. Never on stock. Send to be less frequent with interactive governors than ondemand or conservative

Galaxy note 8 (about screen issues)

Hey guys! I would like to buy galaxy note 8, but since there was some posts and stories when people having big problems with it's screen (even after 2-3 months) - I am still in consideration. I am talking about burn in and light leak. I know that some people will say it's not very noticeable in some cases and just "chill out", but when I pay for phone 1000 euro - Phone should be perfect.
So I am creating a poll and expecting note 8 users to respond
If you have any problems with screen, could you also mention since when did you experienced it? (e.x. 1-8 months after purchasing)
P.s. As I experienced, note series phones has the most problems with "burn in". The reason I want this phone is because of the stylus pen, which I find very useful.
I have finally created some burn in but it from keeping Pokemon go open for hours and hours at a time. I've now found that using the Tiles app to hide system bars for all apps, but it's too late now. Mine is very faint and only shows in white and blue screen tests. I couldn't see it until I actually ran the burn in test.

Would warranty service replace the screen which has burn-in, or you haven't contacted them yet? Because I asked at Telia in Denmark, and they said that they would.

I can confirm screen burn-in is covered under samsung warranty from experience. My screen burn in came from the enabled auto brightness setting. Quite often my phone is holstered near the front windshield of my car. During the day, sometimes the sunlight would trigger daylight mode which is 100% brightness. Unaware of this, I was exposing the screen to long periods of youtube and maps while driving for months.. Next thing you know, screen burn in. I'm sure many cases are a result of this. So now I use an app too closely monitor auto-brightness. I think as long as one keeps brightness at no higher than 60% will avoid screen burn-in.
I've been using my Note 8 N950N for about 3 months now with auto brightness enabled and everything seems fine so far. I can get 2 days battery with lite usage.
Yeah I could get a replacement but I don't want to get a refurbished phone. I hate getting a device and wondering what they did to actually "fix" whatever was wondering with the original person's defective unit.

If you purchase it directly from Samsung. You should be fine.
Be wary with Samsung's repair centers
Sent my phone for repair last week( display burn-in) received it with the same problem ( and was charged for a repair, which I paid thinking it was for the screen ) what they changed was the charging port which I had no problem with . Now they want me to send it again and I won't . Won't get charged again
No burn in for me. Got the phone on January this year (2018). Flashed and rooted on the first week. Loving the phone.
I Have my note 8 since Nov 2017 for almost 11 months, no burns or light bleed, nor pinkish tint, or peeling paint, no false moisture warnings, no excessive batt drain, no sluggish charging, no lag, zero random reboots, no freezing, ram always above 1 GB, cpu temp always below 49 oC, perfect cameras, excellent call quality, fast gps all the time, even indoors, nothing wrong in any way, I am very, very pleased with it, btw, I am running it with 7.1.1
Perfect cameras - not. Selfie - awful !

Mine is almost 7 months old, there is only light leaks (was there when i bought the phone and you will get used to it) but it really doesnt effect the phone nor water resistance. I have swam with my phone many times in both pool and sea, still rocking. If you use full brightness even with the red limit bar ofcourse you will burn the screen. I have used it on that mode many times but still no issues with it. About light leak, it really doesnt bother, i had xa ultra and sides were a little bit curved and i could see the same light leak. Its not that of a big deal.

I've had mine for 8 months now. Started with screen becoming less responive to my touch and stylus. About a week ago, my display started opening and exiting apps, couldn't remain on same page, and scrolling on it's own. I took it to my carrier and they replaced it no charge.
