LTE on Koodo? - Xiaomi Mi 5 Questions & Answers

I'm looking at buying this phone - my carrier Koodo (canada) has band 4 for LTE. I understand that this phone doesn't support this bankd for LTE. Anyway to unlock this band?
I've been reading this - http://en.miui.com/thread-311977-1-1.html
has anyone successfully got this to work with Koodo LTE?

Try asking here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-5/how-to/mi5-mi-max-unlocked-bands-successfully-t3420808

Doing just a quick research I found out that Koodo is using Telus and Bell network. Telus is using band 5 for LTE, band that is supported by Xiaomi MI5. Take it with a pinch of salt tho. If you want to ask Koodo directly, my advice is not to ask someone in a showroom. I don't know how it's in Canada, but here in UK these guys have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. Call customer support and ask to be redirected to technical department. There you have big chances to talk with an actual engineer. Good luck.

where in CA? The Telus' side has LTE band 5 (most places), 7 (city centres), and 40 (???) deployed; Bell's side has band 7 ('ronto) and some band 5 deployed.

I guess this thread is in the wrong section - should have been in the q&a section.
Any mods kindly move it to the q&a section ...

In Calgary, CA. Does anyone use Mi5 in this part of canada and get LTE with Koodo?

I just got my Mi5 a few weeks ago - using it on Koodo in the Vancouver area. Enabled LTE and it is working, however the speeds are not much better than HSPA+. My girlfriend gets significantly better speeds on Telus with her iPhone 6. I keep meaning to steal her SIM and test both in my phone at the same time to see if it is the phone or the network, but I haven't yet.
I would post screenshots but apparently I need 10 posts before outside links will work. try putting https:// in front of the below text

Mine is connecting to Band 5 on LTE though - not band 4. From some comments in the other thread, this may be why my speeds are slower??

Telus band 5 seems to be exclusive to BC/ Westside for now. Not sure if they expanded but I have never connected to it from the East end (Waterloo -> Toronto -> Ottawa).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telus_Mobility#Radio_frequency_summary
What I do know is that I only get band 7 LTE in most of Toronto and Waterloo. It isn't that great however compared to band 4 coverage wise. Not the end of the world as it would just roll back to HSPA+ time to time.

The difference in speed should be because of Band 5 vs 4, my iPhone 6 connects to band 4 and I get around 80mbps+ down. My Mi 5 however gets around 40mbps connected to band 7.

Ayy another C-Townie.
Yes, Koodo's LTE band 5 covers the entire city. However, speed isn't that great since it has a max of 37.5Mbps. I usually get ~12Mbps.
The 150Mbps band 7 covers the inner city (up to Sarcee x John Laurie in the NW), but the max speed I could get is around 55Mbps.
Band 40 is a crapshoot and doesn't seem to have any deployment patterns to it, and it's slow as balls.

Will VZW version work on AT&T?

Just wondering if the VZW variant will work on AT&T, I know it works on T-Mobile but not sure about AT&T.

Yes, I bought a new one yesterday and just popped in my at&t based net 10 card switched to global and put in the apn.
Big question is will LTE work?
Me thinks no
I'm on AT&T with my VS980, but HSPA+ is what you will get (I understand there is some very small areas where you may get LTE). That said, I am ok with the speeds on my device, no problem for me with browsing, email, forums, mms, youtube etc...
AT&T LTE is different band
The VZW LTE band is (block C, band 13) which I believe is 746-787MHz. The AT&T band is band 5 (I think it's 850MHz range). I think it's more complicated since not all bands for AT&T cover the continental US - refer to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellular_frequencies for more exact info. I am guessing that the radio hardware in the phone can probably handle all the bands (just assuming the SOC's etc. are designed to cover all current LTE bands) but probably radio drivers and possibly antenna designs need to set the proper bands for the carriers network. So my take is while theoretically it *could* work it probably won't work due to software configuration issues that would need to be addressed at the driver level.
There is a thread in the qa section that has some good detail "Working AT&T LTE for Verizon G2"
It will work because I popped in a straight talk/ ATT Sim into a VS980 just the other day. I configured the APN and was able to send/receive texts, make calls and browse the internet. I pulled about 7mpbs according to speedtest.
OK ? I have a Verizon lg g2 with at&t and I can not for the life of me get data how do I get data maybe I need a correct APN my phone only shows bars no h no 4g no nothing any help I would be appreciated thanx

LTE Band confusion.

So I just got this phone this week, and I knew it wouldn't have band 20 support from every single info page there is on the web basically, including official Motorola pages.
I was even considering switching operators when buying this phone..
My old HTC One M7 had Band 8, 800mhz, but not 900Mhz, so I never had coverage outside any city or at home.
Band 20 is 900mhz, and is the only band Tele2 Sweden has long range LTE on, which is nonstandard, everyone else is using band 8 for this.
But imagine my surprise when I DO get maximum LTE coverage, literally everywhere I've been.
So I'm properly confused, what does this thing support? Or did I get ridiculously lucky and got an completely unlocked device or what?
The about page says I have the XT1092.
There is already a thread for that, no need to open a new one : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2884337

Which bands will Turbo support?

Copied from phone arena, yet device page doesn't list the bands.
"The FCC filing is for a *Motorola device with the model number*XT1254, which matches the leaked DROID Turbo model number we've seen before. The odd thing is that the filing lists support for*LTE Bands 2, 4, 5, and 17, and GSM and WCDMA frequencies at 850MHz, 1700MHz, and 1900MHz. Those bands match up with AT&T and T-Mobile; but, the DROID Turbo would be a Verizon device"
My question is for my friend who uses cricket. Would the droid turbo work with cricket?

just wait, next week we will have full specs and we will know for sure.
There are two Droid Turbo listings that have gone through the FCC.
FCC ID: IHDT56PK1 is the Verizon Droid Turbo. It has support for:
GSM 850 / 900
WCDMA Band II / V
CDMA2000 BC0 / BC1
LTE Bands 2/4/7/13
This is pretty much a typical "global" Verizon phone. It does not support AT&T LTE bands but should work on their 3G network. Cricket uses the AT&T network. However there is that second Droid Turbo listing.
FCC ID: IHDT56PK2 is the other listing, it is stated as electrically identical to the Verizon Droid Turbo. It has support for:
GSM 850 / 1900
WCDMA Band II / IV / V
LTE Bands 2/4/5/7/17
This is more or less an AT&T version of the Droid Turbo. So this would be the phone you should be looking for when it eventually comes out.
Networks and Bands
CDMA/EVDO Rev A (850, 1900MHz)
LTE Cat 4 (bands 2, 3, 4, 7, 13)
Carrier Aggregation (B4+13)
GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900MHz)
UMTS/HSPA+ (850, 900, 1900, 2100MHz

Probably not.
I put my ATT SIM card in, clicked on the "not a verizon sim card" pop up to make it go away.
Had a 3G icon but speeds are not bad, getting 6-7 Mbps / 2 Mbps (down/up) on ATT. Configured proper APN and it still did not matter.
Put the Verizon sim back and had LTE and noticed the APN I saved for ATT was gone and the Verizon one was back.
In any case, I don't plan to use this device on ATT but was curious if that (ATT) sim would work. Why? If it works (which it did, placed calls, and sent SMS), this means I should be able to travel overseas and use another SIM card. It was a question I could not get answered in the corporate VZW store. Now I know.
I'd suspect TMO LTE would not work. If you plan on using the device full time you probably won't have LTE speeds.

AFAIK, Turbo support band 2, 4 which is compatible with T-Mobile. (1700, 2100).
I don't see the supported band in 3G and GSM but 4G
Also, Motorola planned to launch an international version of Turbo so if you don't want to get from verizon, you can get this version.
Yeah I'd suspect it was using HSPA+ because I've never gotten speeds much above 1 or 2mbps down with 3G.
Either way, definitely not a deal breaker, anything is better than dreaded EDGE/1X LOL.

I bought this phone on a lark to see if it would work on T-Mo, and I CAN receive LTE. I validated download speeds above 12 MBPS. The coverage seems to be a bit spotty and I am not sure what band is being picked up. I am in Minneapolis.

Yes, just tried it and was able to surf while on a call.
Speed tests show about the same speeds as well, approx 6 down, 2 up.
However when on Verizon there is no data when on a call. They need to enable LTE for voice and data. I believe it's Advanced calling 1.0.
Interestingly enough I got a text yesterday afternoon on my other number that's on an iphone 6 that is now active.
Hopefully it won't be long.
EDIT: Even though the signal icon shows 3G when the ATT sim is there it may be getting LTE. My area doesn't get good signal, typ. -115dBM on LTE and -90 dBM for HSPA, etc. I'll have to try it in an area where LTE is stronger. In any case HSPA+ is pretty good, it surfs pretty fast.
Thanks guys

Canadian Network Support / LTE
Hey guys,
Picked up the Turbo at a Buffalo best Buy and set it up today on Rogers/Fido. Couldn't seem to get an LTE signal even though the phone and network seem to be compatible on LTE band 4.
Anyways, for any of those wondering about this or considering doing the same thing and bringing a Turbo up north, after about an hour 4G LTE switched on by itself and I must say these speeds are incredible. 76MB Down and 17MB Up. My home cable speeds aren't that fast.
So basically, anyone reading this thread in Canada. Fear not and buy this beast of a phone.
P.S. (I used the "LTEMOBILE.APN" APN)

T-Mobile LTE signal

I just got the phone on Monday. With the original ROM and after taking several OTA updates, my LTE signal strength at home and at work was horrible. I'd get around -120 dBm and it would frequently change to HSPA and even EVDO.
One thing that I noticed is that on LTE, it was using band 4, which is 2100 MHz. On my Note 2, it always used band 14, which is 700 MHz. The lower frequency penetrates buildings better and gave me a better signal at work and home (not great, but useable).
I just updated to the latest T-Mobile ROM from the developer site. The LTE signal strength is a bit better at -116 dBm and so far, it isn't changing to HSPA or worse. However, it is still using band 4.
Does anyone know why my old phone used band 14 and this new phone uses band 4? I would think that the phone would use whichever band gave it the best signal, which would certainly be band 14. Is there any way to force this?
Thanks.
I didn't look up the Note 2's specs but I'd guess it didn't have band 4. What are you using to see your band? OpenSignal?

I just looked up the specs on Wikipedia. It says that the T-Mobile version uses band 17, but I know that the phone said band 14 before I swapped SIMs.
Wikipedia says the Nexus 6 uses bands 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 7 / 12 / 13 / 17 / 25 / 26 / 29 / 41.
This is from the T-Mobile Support site: "TMO uses bands 2 and 4 on LTE/4G & 3G". Also from Support: "LTE band 4(1700/2100), 17(700)". I'm not sure what to believe, or what is in use around here. Like I said above, I know that the Note 2 said it was using band 14.
On the Nexus 6, I'm using an app called LTE Discovery.
T mobile only uses band 2,4,12 for LTE. The note 2 doesn't support band 12. I never heard of band 14.

I'm by no means an expert when it comes to bands/frequencies, however, if the app told you the Note 2 was on band 14, I think it was lying to you. I'm pretty sure there isn't even a band 14 in the U.S., and almost positive T-Mobile does not run LTE on that band.
When (if) band 12 reaches your neighborhood receiption indoors should improve drastically. On band 4 I usually get -109 to -101 dBm. On band 12 I get around -89 to -94 dBm.
I have tried different ROMs and different radio modems. Nothing I do gets me a decent signal. Very occasionally I have had a moderately strong LTE signal, but even then, the download speed is only usable and the upload speed sucks.
The phone doesn't stay on LTE for long. It switched to HSPA and even EVDO most of the time. On HSPA, my old Note 2 got at least 2 Mb downloads. This N6 can't even get a kilobyte down on HSPA.
I don't know if it really affects things, but I read some comments that a bad SIM could possibly cause this. Is this true? If so, I'll drop by the T-Mobile store again and ask them to try another SIM.
I love the phone for the big screen and other features, but I really can't live with this lousy data connection. If I can't get this resolved, I'll have to return the N6 and buy another phone.
I might consider a Note 5 if I have to. It only has a 5.7 inch screen, but my Note 2 had a 5.5 incher. I don't really use the pen and the price premium is high, but I don't know what other phones have a 5.7-6 inch display, except for some Chinese phones. I don't know if they are any good, or if I could use them on T-Mobile.
Call me frustrated.

Yes, I am on T-Mobile. I meant Edge, not EVDO. Too many acronyms.
I just got home and even though the phone is currently showing three bars on LTE, the signal level is only -118 dBm, which isn't good. Speed test won't even do 1/2 Mb/s on download. This is pathetic.
As much as I otherwise like this phone, I can't live with this lousy signal issue. Unless someone knows of a fix, I will have to return the phone to Amazon. As I said, I have tried different ROMS and modems. I have also tried changing various settings that others have suggested (clearing cache, APN settings, etc.). I don't know what else to do.

Because of the choppy voice calls, as well as the lousy data connection, I am returning this phone and getting a Note 5. Although it is my personal phone, I also need a reliable phone for when I am on call at work.
I have spent all week on this and can't waste any more time. I need something that works. My Note 2 was reliable. I hope the Note 5 will be also.
Thanks to all for suggestions.
I too am having LTE data connection issues on LYZ28K. Anyone on LMY48M having data issues? I tried setting phone info to "LTE only", but that didn't help. I don't need wifi calling, so I'm wondering if I should switch to LMY48M?

Good to hear. My mi max 2 should arrive on wednesday and since I'm on att I can test it out as well. I'm hoping I have similar luck.

Also, could you tell us what city you were able to get 4G in?

please let me know- if you dont see 4g, do a manual network search and pick ATT 4g....that did the trick for me....
I don't have the Mi Max 2, but the Zenfone 3 Ultra which has similar bands. I lack all the LTE Bands except for Band 5. I can confirm that in all major cities I have been to I get LTE through band 5. Heck, even in my city which is only about 300,000 strong I get 4G/LTE in half of it. Seems like AT&T is really ramping up their band 5 LTE service.

Thanks for sharing the info. I looked up your phone and if you have the global version it appears you have more LTE bands available than the Mi Max 2. Namely bands 2,4 and 17. While ATT does provide LTE for band 5 I won't get my hopes too much for LTE. As long as I can get strong HSPA+ that's enough for my needs

I think you were looking up the specs of the Zenfone 3 Deluxe, not the Ultra. There is no version of the Ultra that has bands 2,4, and 17. Trust me I'd buy it if they did.

Looks like you're right. I should've checked the asus site instead of the 3rd party sites below. Lesson learned

At any rate, got the phone today so I should be able to test tonight!
Finally got some time to set it up. I can confirm 4G (HSPA+) in South Jersey. Hopefully, I can go to philly this weekend to test for LTE connectivity.

Does it say 4G or H+ as the indicator? If it says 4G then you are getting LTE already. The international phones say 4G and the american phones say LTE.

For me, it says H+. However, I haven't had a chance to go to the city yet. I would say though that my nexus 6p gets LTE in the primary area I use it in but when I switch the sim card into the mi max 2 it only gets H+ in this area.

right now i am travelling on I -94 Wisconsin- Minnesota- North Dakota, and most of the time my indicator tells me 4g....
Sorry to bump an old thread but I was in Texas last week and I picked up 4G in San Antonio.
Also back in Illinois I am picking up 4G here. This started after the last phone update.
Yeah Band 5 is nicely saturated where I live so I can't complain
