Hey guys i just had a few questions for the nexus one users out there..by the way i am finally giving in and deciding to buy a nexus one!! I waited and waited to see if there were going to be any better phones coming out, but for some reason the nexus one just calls my name, its a perfect phone.
Anyways my dad has current service with at&t (the $60 individual plan) and i am pretty sure he already completed his two year contract. I was thinking of adding a line to his account and purchase a nexus one to use with it. My question was if i were to buy the n1, would there need to be a requirement to establish a new contract?
Also in your personal opinions, is the n1 better on the at&t or t-mobile network?

No. It's $529... then you just add the line to your service. The only time you would have to start a new contract with the phone is if you opt for the $179 deal through T-Mobile (AT&T doesn't have a deal like that).

Depends on where you live and what you want.
T-Mobile is the only provider that allows you to have a smart phone on a non-contract plan without requiring you pay for a data package. So if you have steady access to WiFi, it really isn't worth paying extra for data, and using Google Voice for free unlimited texting means that T-Mobile is by far the cheapest non-contract option.
AT&T generally has better overall 3G/coverage nationwide (they certainly do where I live in Utah), but if you go non-contract with them, you still have to pay for data.
T-Mobile is rolling out HSPA+ all over the USA, and people are reporting 6-7mbps speeds. Check out androidforums.com/nexus-one
If I were you, and if data/3G was important, I'd check your local AT&T retailers and have them show you speed tests.
It seems in general ATT nexus users don't have signal issues like the t-mobile nexus users often have. But that's just a general observation. It all depends on your specific area.
Me personally, ATT will have stronger service cause ATT uses 850 and 1900 mhz, where t-mobile uses 1700/2100 mhz. So ATT's 850 is much stronger signal penetration and range. I think this is partially why t-mobile users get that flaky 3g issue. But also ATT 3g has a head start on coverage over t-mobile, so they will catch up eventually.
...and the nexus one would be subject to follow the new data usage rules for at&t right? I think its 250 mb for $15 and 2 gb for $25.

Does the upgraded network on t-mobile mean that current 3g phones (like the nexus one) would be able to use it?
current tmobile 3g phones (including N1) are already ready for the hspa+
i sell tmo and att (amongst other carriers) i also have both carriers. the high speeds you can get on the tmo hspa+ are nice, but inconsistent.
go AT&T. pay a little more, but have a far better network.
Get T-Mobile service if you can get 3G service where you are.
i would vote for at&t. one of my buddy's using t-mo, and as mentioned before inconsistent with their network
I am on AT&T and T-Mobile gave me a free phone with unlimited free service which I stopped using because the audio quality was horrible and people kept complaining how bad it sounded.
I vote AT&T.
if you travel, tmobile really doesnt work outside metro areas and highways. just food for thought. at&t works in more rural areas as well. I dont have any issues with my at&t nexus, dont know about the tmobile version. Mine is for sale if you are interested, I need the money towards importing a phone at retail. However AT&T seems to be proven but the people who I knew that had AT&T have either switched to Sprint or Verizon.

I use T-mobile. I've been happy with both their voice and data service for years now - I switched when the G1 came out.
If you go camping/etc you'll probably run into coverage issues. However, in the Philadelphia suburbs you're not going to have problems, beyond the rare issue in a building or whatever that everybody has. I've found the coverage map on their website to be accurate - it has a google-maps-like interface and you can see coverage down to the street level.
Definitely get an unsubsidized plan. With monthly payments if you buy a phone from them it is no more expensive than the subsidized plans anyway. However, it gives you the flexibility to go elsewhere for your gear or update on your own schedule penalty-free. Obviously paying $350 for a Nexus 4 makes a lot more sense than paying $600 for the exact same device.
Compared to Verizon or ATT you'll save buckets of cash.
I'd say go att if you plan on going to south jersey. Edge sucks.

T-mobile for the past 6 years in Philly and surrounding areas. I really can't complain. I have the occasional issue in a particular building or someone's house but I'm paying $50/mo. Their service has gradually become better year after year. I would definitely recommend.
I'm on AT&T in the Philadelphia area, and their HSPA+ here is sloooowwww. I'm lucky if I get 2-4mbps. The coverage is great (I switched from Verizon, and AT&T is much better in the areas that I frequent) but the speed is meh. Still much better than 3G, but nothing like the speeds I've heard of from T-mobile.
T-Mobile value here. The shore and poconos are much spottier than AT&T but delco, at least, is better. I never really did any wireless speed tests to compare.
the ~$600 a year savings made it a no brainer for me.
I'm out in Montgomery County and have been on Straight Talk AT&T for a while. Just got my new sim for ST T-Mobile. All I did was call them and gave them the new SIM PIN and within an hour or so, all was done. Costs 48/month with all unlimited, throttling data after 2GBs? I don't use that much data so I'm not sure. Coverage for AT&T was fine, but data speeds were slow. T-Mobile is already giving me about double the speeds: 6741kpbs down 2211kbps up. I'm guessing it'll be faster when I'm in the city. The SIM cards only cost ~10 bucks with free overnight shipping. I'd say go with ST if you don't need over 2GBs of data and then you can try both and be totally content with your decision.
Didn't think T-Mobile would get the nod here. I do work in Center City West so I was worried about the building I'm in and around me. But I have to remember I'm ok, given I'm not tied down.

I've had a Sprint SERO plan for years. Service was always crappy here in the SF Bay Area, but, the price was cheap (SERO is a good deal) and there was always the promise that things would get better - the current promise being Spark.
I bought a Nexus 5 thinking it was the phone I wanted, and that I would recoup some of the Sprint subsidy I wasn't getting by getting a subsidized iPhone and then selling it on ebay.
Since the phone was unlocked and GSM capable, I thought, what the heck, I'll buy a Straight Talk prepaid AT&T SIM and try it for a month. After a week I terminated Sprint (I was out of contract.)
It was a whole new world. I could drive from San Francisco across the Bay Bridge and back without the call dropping once. I could drive from San Francisco to Marin County across the Golden Gate Bridge and up the Waldo grade without the call dropping 3 times. I could take out the phone practically anywhere and the internet would work reasonably fast, rather than having about a 50% chance of getting the webpage I wanted.
I could get the phone on the network by simply inserting the SIM card, no hassle of reading long MEID numbers to a phone agent, no scrounging around for a SIM card that was always out of stock. I had LTE service right away, rather than at some indeterminate point in the future when they would fix the towers so that they could work with my phone.
I can be on the internet and talk on the phone at the same time.
I don't mean this to be a rant, but to inspire others. If you are on Sprint and out of contract, try a prepaid AT&T SIM and see if you see the radical difference I did (this would include AT&T Gophone, AIO, Straight Talk, and others, Straight Talk being the chepaest of the bunch at $45 per month.)
Did the same but went with T-Mobile and their $30 prepaid plan (5g of 4G data but only 100 min talk) and have not looked back. Sprint was, to a degree, a failed service for me and at close to $90 a month for unlimited but unusable data and talk, life now just seems easy.
As a note, the 100 mins of talk time seem limiting and might be for some who need to talk on the road. For me, as a Google Voice user, I have the Obi box at home and call forwarding to my work phone. Additional minutes are 10 cents/min extra, so if you keep some extra dough in your T-Mo account, you won't see any cutoffs as it'll just debit your account. Either way, Sprint was just too full of promises and too slow on the implementation.

I guess this is an illustration of how locked phones are dangerous for the carriers - makes it too easy to shop around.
You really hit the nail on the head when you said "life now just seems easy." After being on Sprint, reliability and dependability is a welcome change. You just know it will work.

I just did the same, but dropped for Aio instead ($55 for unlim talk/text and 2gb at high speed before throttled). I'd been with Sprint for 10+ years, so was a little hesitant, but coverage was so bad that I dropped ASAP, even paying an ETF. Turns out, I should have been more brave months ago, as Aio has better coverage in my area than Sprint ever did. I can actually use data inside buildings, what?! I agree with the OP on this being a whole new world. Having a shiny new N5 definitely isn't hurting my opinion either.

Does AIO have LTE?
Man do you guys live in 3rd world countries? J/k tell us how things are in a year from now. Its just crazy how different parts of the country are at n t sucks here almost bad as t mobile. To much interference with the gsm signals.

I preordered the N5 a month before my Verizon contract ended and hopped on the GSM ship. Has been smooth sailing thus far!!!
Went with Aio's $55/month plan and have been LOVING IT. Verizon's ~$100/month with unlimited data just wasn't worth it after all.
I have been reassured that when Aio (who is owned by AT&T) get's absorbed by Cricket (who's parent company is now owned by AT&T) in the near future my plan will stay the same, and continue to use AT&T's nationwide LTE.
I will gauge my experience when the switch happens and decide whether to try GoPhone (another AT&T prepaid, assuming AT&T doesn't fold it in with the Cricket brand name as well) or try T-Mobile's $60 plans. That is the beauty of GSM + Nexus devices. Freedom. That plus the dev support and international compatibility. Ya, I realize some Verizon phones can accomplish that as well, but come on. Verizon = they control you and your device
When I was on Verizon (Galaxy Nexus) I was streaming a lot of music in the car using 6-8 gigs/month. Never thought I could give up my grandfathered unlimited data! When I switched to Aio I started pinning (caching) my music when I got my Nexus 5 instead of streaming it, and now I only use about 800mb/month. Couldn't believe it!
I encourage everyone to join the GSM bandwagon :good:
I bought the Nexus 5 for the same reason I am going to ride my contract out on Sprint until March(cuz I'm a cheap bastard and don't want to pay an etf) but have been weighing my options in the meantime can't wait to be off this **** network. Side note I am on a family plan with 4 family members and pay my mom $30/month for unlimited everything and I still need to switch unlimited is a joke when you can't call or connect to anything.

Hey I am a long time Verizon GS3 and droid x user living in south east Florida and I am thinking about switching over to att. I have been doing a lot of research both on att and the new moto x and I believe that's what I am going to do. I see a lot has been done with att network in the last year or two and the next is a better deal than Verizon's and the plan is $15 cheaper for individual until my wife's contract is over in Oct. So....should I switch? Has the network really gotten better? Good customer service? Good prices? Give me some feedback on your att experience....I have a big decision to make by Friday. My GS3 broke last week and my bday is tomorrow and I am dying with my wife's cracked screen thunderbolt from 3 years ago...lol Thanks.

Happy birthday first of all and here are my .02 cents.
If I were to do it again, I'd go with AIO wireless or some other cheap carrier. AIO or whatever it is called is actually on AT&T network and has everything you need. You just have to buy your own phone which IMHO is much better anyways. No need to sign a contract. Phones are beyond locked down and too much bloat. Get pure version of X through moto maker and go with $45 a month plan. IMHO, that's the way to go.

I had Verizon once hated every thing about them, still do. Where I'm at and places I travel to have pretty good AT&T coverage. I'm a multi phone user and I can switch them for certain situations, S4 Active for hunting and fishing trips, N5, Moto X '13 and '14 because of Motorolas radios and the experience, iPhone 5 for Facetime. This is a decision you will have to make for yourself based upon what is important for you. As far as back plates, wood and leather scratch but can both be repaired/retreated easily. I went with standard soft touch because I'll end up putting a skin on, hopefully blue camo like my N5.

Maybe as long as you get good AT&T signal. I personally think it's better to get the Pure version over AT&T version even though it lacks a few AT&T LTE bands, it should support enough of their LTE bands that as long as you live in big enough city you'll still get good coverage. Most people should have no problem. I still think it's worth it over AT&T crapwares, locked bootloader, locked sim, slower udpates and lower resale value. You could test their coverage by using an AT&T MVNO like Cricket for just one month, and later sign a contract if you really want to.
As for "good customer service". I have dealt with AT&T in the past and I can only express my opinion about them using vulgar languages.
Check local signal. If AT&T has good coverage (they do in most of US, close to Verizon's) then go with a pure on Cricket or AIO for the best price.

Have t-mobile pay termination fee. Get T-mobile 2-line $100 Unlimited 4G lte offer. Trade in crap phone. Lease a new one with t-mobile using extra cash.

So get a new phone and new 2 - yr contract, switch to T-Mobile and trade in S4, sell new phone and get new phone through T-Mobile? Thought I read that they require you to show bill from ATT which shows which phone you currently have?

thats why dont lease the new phone with att because you dont own it and when t-mobile pays the phone lease they require you to trade in that same phone leaving your back at square one.
For your s4, you can sell it for more money on ebay/swappa/CL. T-mobile just requires any smartphone or flip phone to trade in even if its not working as part of their paying your termination fees. You will just get zero credit for trading in a non working phone.
If you are eyeing the note 4 get it. If not get the s6 and take advantage of the latest and greatest software and design. Plus a year free of netflix promo if you got the s6 route.

I'm on cricket with 3 lines. Unlimited talk/text and 2.5 GB a month for each line and I only pay 90 a month. I picked up and unlocked a tmob Note 4 for 300 dollars after I traded in my Note 3. You would be able to pop and play sims in your other ATT phones too since Cricket is an ATT mvno. I just got a Gear S like new on eBay for 140 and will be adding it to my plan for an extra 5 dollars a month for 2.5 GB. If you like ATT service I highly recommend this. The only caveat is they limit the LTE dl speed to 8 mbps but it's never held me back. Just another option for ya!
Edit: Oh it only cost me 20 to get the phone unlocked, which you would have to do to use it on the network.

I also have this in motion atm. "Cricket" sims being shipped now to switch from T-Mobile any day now. I have basically no data in my entire area & I rely on Wi-Fi calling to even receive or make a call in my house and that is when Wi-Fi calling actually seems to work on two different phones.

Its been great so far...if I had to make any complaint it would be that the online account doesnt keep track of calls and texts...only data use. Not a deal breaker by any means but was useful when I had it with AT&T. I have the same coverage as i used to so theres no transition at all
