They talk in the notes of a problem with a 3rd party application collecting personal information such as contacts call logs texts but doesn't say which. If we knew of which app perhaps it could be addressed?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

From what I can see, it was just the app programmed to send the info, not the whole OS that was compromised.

Thanks -- does that mean if we already got rid of the ads and the amazon layer we are set, or do we need to get rid of that hidden app? If so how would we do it?

After reading the article I am thinking the 3rd party Adups app code is in there still. So I guess I go back to the original question would we have to update the phone then reroot etc? I'm hoping there is another way.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

will need to get rid of the Adups stuff. I suspect we'll have to take the latest update get the ads back. or take your chances with Adups.

The app in question is called "Wireless Update".
I had it frozen in Titanium Pro since the day I rooted it. Mine was 5.0.0. So today I deleted it.
I typically disable OTA because they soemtimes mess up the software. I have a blind faith in original OEM software, not in OTAs from carriers. I know this is a weak argument, just me.
Anyways, if your phone is rooted, try to delete this app and you are all set, until something else comes up.
For security reasons, do not buy any Chinese phones or rebranded American phones like this R1HD.
Avoid chinese apps too, check its publisher before you download it. Examples, Greenify, Kingroot, Master Clean or CLean Master,
You can buy these cheapo for kids as disposable, that's fine, just do not use it for personal , such as banking, payment, etc. You are kindly warned.
Disclaimer, I am Chinese American, i know what I am talking. I use S7 as main, this R1HD is for wechat only, the chinese social media app which collects everything from my phone and loads them to a server in China.

Thanks for the warning and suggestion to delete Wireless update. I'm wondering if the prior blocking of OTA updates that I did actually already did that. But I'll check to see if there is anything else I can delete on that....

I had wireless update frozen and it kept on "melting" Itself
I was having other issues also, not able to flash zips and many apps not working etc
So I did a twrp restore and used a debloat zip to REMOVE system update and ads
Sent from my R1 HD using Tapatalk

Blu says that the issue was only on firmware 5.0 to 5.3 I double checked I'm running over 6 and there's no wireless update app. I don't know if that's because I rooted and removed the OTA's and ads or whether the newer versions of the firmware just don't have it --here is a screenshot from the blu

I think people are confusing the firmware version with the Wireless Updater application version. Two different things.

Ok got it now. I just don't have the app on my blu phones (bought early August) and don't know if that is because they weren't included or because of the disabling of OTAs and ads that I did.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have an affected R1 HD (Wireless Update version 5.0.0.0.0). Since I had previously rooted my phone, I installed Titanium B/u, uninstalled FOTA and Wireless Update apps.....Rebooted.......
Both apps are now gone....

I bought mine in early August, and it WAS included.

I debloated mine the day I got it (when it was first released by Amazon) and there's no sign of that app on my device, so I guess I'm all clear.

Have you checked it per instruction on BLU's web site?

I knew this was a rebranded Chinese phone (dual sims is a giveaway). I updated to v6.6 the day I got it so have always had the safe v5.4 Wireless Update. Just updated to v7.4.2. Now have v5.5 Wireless Update. I'm depending on the people in Miami to protect me from the Chinese. BTW, it has that Tmo band.

Hi Gents I have a rooted BLU R1 HD non prime version. there is a new OTA update : release date 2017-5-22, 306.45 MB size, can I update the firmware if my phone is rooted?

No. Do not try to install the over-the-air update on a rooted phone. It won't work. Install the modified version of the update from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/r1-hd/development/modified-8-3-stock-rom-t3602672 This is the latest available version. V21 is the non-prime update.

I have a non-rooted R1 HD that worked great, but after I installed R0010UU_V8.4_GENERIC 05-05-2017 I had a lot of issues with my wifi. Blu sent me the roll-back to to the R0010UU_V7.4.2_GENERIC 09-11-2016 and it was back up and working.
I now see that the R0010UU_V8.5_GENERIC_6 20170613-1831 is available.
Can you tell me if the wifi issue was solved?
Thanks!

My advice would be to install TWRP and root your phone so you will be able to install custom ROMs when Blu stops updating the phone. And, it will get rid of the ads for you. Then, you can flash the modified version of 8.5 here and flash it back yourself if you don't like it - no help from Blu required.
But it's up to you. It seems like lots of people here have updated to the modified 8.5 and it works fine for them.

Moto Stock Experience

After removing all of the VZW preinstalled apps, and most of the Moto stock software, there was only one thing left: "Backup Assistant".
I removed Backup Assistant, Backup Assistant Client and Sync Service APK's. Backup Assistant entry in Settings was gone, I associated my contacts with Google account, but there is one thing left. As you can see in screenshots bellow, my contacts app is still showing a "placeholder" for Backup Assistant" in all the menus. I tried replacing the contacts apk with odexed and deodexed version of the same one from different firmwares (used both XT860 and 883 versions) and it's a NO GO. Those versions just wont work. (the FM Radio and Phone Portal from these FW's work flawlessly).
I could use 3-rd party contacts/dialer app, but the thing is - I am trying to have full stock experience without useless VZW crap.
I am on rooted stock .906, and could really use some help/guide on this.

You would be better trying to run a custom ROM like Maverick. It is stock 906 without the bloat.

I have already tried a couple of ROMs,but the thing is,I'm trying to keep the stock FW and all the features (and bugs) of it.Also,I have found another VZW entry in settings>location settings...any way to get that one also.

Hi Bedara!
I'm on the shame opinion. I don't like custom roms, because all of them has a skin that I don't like. And as I know, it's neccesarry to keep SafeStrap on my phone, wich is a security gap when I lost my phone or stolen.
I removed all the Motorola and Vzw bloat, and now, my stock rom as fast as any custom ROM I think.
But I have problem with Facebook sync. And I think this is because there is a modified Account and sync .apk in our phones. (I found that other stock Blur Droid rom users can't use facebook sync)
You can see the differences if go to Accounts and click 'add account' on the stock rom. Compare it to any 3th party rom like Eclipse for example. And I think the whole Settings.apk is a Motorola modified one. I tried to replace with no success:
See my post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30869715&postcount=138
I'm in the dark but I think:
- there is dependencies between the APK-s. For example if you remove Setup.apk, the whole settings menu don't work. However the settings.apk doesn't need Setup.apk in Eclipse rom. But the motorola's settings.apk needs the setup.apk. The account specific things is in setup.apk (Install System Panel lite https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.systempanel and you can read the activity's names. When I go to settings->accounts, I can see that the corresponding activity is: com.motorola.blur.setup wich is Setup.apk)
I found a complete lists of which apk corresponds to wich activity names: http://pastebin.com/awWwmqZ5
- I readed it somwhere that it's neccesarry sometimes to sign apk-s together at one time
- and I found apks in: blur-res.apk, moto-res.apk and framework-res.apk. Maybe it's neccesarry to replace this apk-s to ones that non-modified by motorola.
- motorola modified a lot of apk-s. That's the reason we cant' replace apk-s one-by one. I think applications shares resources from each other but original progams can't call blurized programs and vica versa.
It's neccesarry to determine wich programs uses wich progam's resources and replace all of them together with a non-motorola ones. But I don't know how to find that.
Absolutely agree, I love the stock icons that are like the faenza icon theme. also I like the apps like tasks list and so on. these things are missing in vanilla android.
Although, I removed more than only bloat and don't see that placeholder, also there is no "Add account" option. Maybe you should remove more.
As I can see,we share opinions regarding custom roms.On the other hand,I have been researching a bit,and it seams that vzw (xt860) and xt860 and 883 have most of the apk's compatible, except for some system related ones. Now,what can we do,is to try and find right combo.I'm gonna try to mix and match deodexed apk's from xt862 and xt860 (since xt860 doesn't have vzw branding) and maybe (if I'm lucky) get the right ones.I could use deodexed system dump of xt883,if anyone has a link please post.

Do you know any method, that speed up trying various apks?
After I place/rename/replace apk in /system/app/ I must to restart my phone and it takses time.

I've just answered my question:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Howto:_Speed_up_building
(search for hotboot)
Mavrom has about 20 different themes, gotta be one you like. Can't see any reason to prefer stock over a rom like mavrom. It's not drastically different but it adds a lot of features
Stock or custom...I think it's just a state of mind...moto blur, or what ever they call it these days is actually not that bad, but provider customizations...you just gotta hate them, and when it comes to VZW,they go so deep I wouldn't be surprised if some day they came up with there own OS just to f**k us up.
Regarding this topic, I think there is a working port of XT860 for Droid 3...at least I think...not sure.I'm gonna search the threads to try and find it...
Have you checked out steel droid? The older gb one, is very close to stock with bloat removed and a few tweaks for batt/performance.

Found this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1484505), and I am just downloading xt883 system dump from some Chinese server, and it's slooooooow. As soon as download finishes I'm gonna try 883's dialer and phone apk's (the xt862's didn't work).

Thak you! I didn't know that. Just seen these black, pink and Comic Sans like designs and forget MavRom immediately But I give it a try tomorrow. (By the way I know, that I can customize any theme myself by opening apk's and edit it's resources. But it takes time and lot of work.)
But there is another view: I need a rom that can working without recovery bootmenu for security reason. (paranoia) Please see my question in the SafeStrap thread.
Thank you guys, I keep my eyes on this topic!

You can use regular bootstrap, then delete after flashing. That would leave you with no custom recovery, but no one could flash zips

I would recommend sbf to stock to prevent any conflict with safestrap, the backups aren't compatible, but if you flash the same rom as what you are using now you could use tibu for system and user apps and data.

You can also use tibu to schedule app backups straight to your dropbox. You can backup the system apps too, so long as your restore to the same rom. On case anything happens you have everything in the cloud, and db apparently just started 2 step verification, which should appeal to your security paranoia

[ROM] Google Edition 4.3 [Clean][Deodex][276MB][2013.11.21]

This ROM is more or less a debloated stock GE 4.3. It will work on the i9505 (international), i9505g (Google Play Edition), i337 (AT&T), i337m (Canada), and m919 (T-Mobile).
Features
Deodexed
Zip-aligned
Rooted
Auto-loki (For AT&T I337 only)
Removed all apps available in the Play Store except for Google Keyboard
Removed some Samsung bloat
Reboot menu
Play Store 4.4.21
Google Wallet works out-of-the-box
Mobeam (Omnibeam & Beepn'Go) works out-of-the-box
Notes
This ROM uses a Sprint (L720) branded build.prop to make more apps available from the Play Store (Mobeam, Wallet, WatchON). You can keep it as is but if you want to update your custom recovery through GooManager, don't forget to flash the linked build.prop for your phone first!
I had some trouble with SIM unlocking but a reboot fixed it.

Hoping to see a clean 4.4 Rom soon!
I'm wondering if you are working on 4.4.
I loved your GE ROM's, they have been the best for me, no issues, weird reboots, force closes, etc. :good:
Thanks for all your hard work.
waiting for your 4.4 GE Slim rom on SS . i've been using your 4.2.2 rom for a very very long time...
Hello
Hey,
What ROM would you recommend for a 4.2.2 MF3 At&t Galaxy S4 SGH-I337?
I've been using the ROM found in here.
I am new to the rooted world.
It's the first ROM I tried and I love it.
I can go a whole day with, at most, losing 25% battery life.
I love the minimalist aspects of it.
I don't know how to keep track of new ROMs for my build though.
I don't really want to change ROMs at the moment, because I have everything I need with this one,
but if you can give me some cool advice, that would be awesome.
Any help, information, would be appreciated.
Thank you so much for this.

I found simplest workaround for making Android Pay verify your credit card....unroot by removing SuperSU with function to remove at bottom of the app. Then start PAY and allow it to verify whichever card you like. It should take you through a few steps and then instruct you that you need to type unlock pattern to use. Then just reinstall the SU zip from recovery (SuperSU246.zip or the current one you can get at chainfire website). I have not paid for anything just yet but assume it will work since the verification step is completed. If it fails, I will update later over the weekend.
Update: Yes you will need to be on stock ROM (it can be slightly modified with a few apps removed like EMAIL or bloat you do not use) but it cannot be a custom ROM like those in original android forum. That will fail. It uses some things within system partition that must be missing when you flash a custom rom. Maybe some hacker can help figure out what that is.

i did get android pay installed, and did add a card, while on the m rom jdx. then i deleted my nfc(i always do that). but i never did test if it worked(my mistake). anyways, android pay got updated today.
Right...but it needs nfc to communicate with the terminal and the security thing is because it's directly connected now to bank
Fail for Google
I tested...it gave error...saying cannot use MasterCard xxx. The guy at register was nice enough to wait...I removed root and rebooted. It worked. Wtf...I cannot use crucial apps that I know help save battery life. My friend just told me to check Android xposed framework workaround
SuperSU unroot procedure works on stock ROM

I can verify that this worked for me also. Added multiple cards before re-rooting and no complaints yet. Will try a McDonalds purchase later .. for research of course.
It failed at panera. I've tried doing rootcloak within xposed framework module and will see if I cab test for small purchase. Update soon. This is retarded that Google is paranoid I'll sue...my bank let's me use rooted...most of their apps are high encryption (192)....hello Google...do same thing!

I'd obviously wipe it remotely. They do not think chit through!

actually, at this point, they did. you havent gotten it to work with root, have you? and i understand why they are doing it this way, its for the majorities safety, not if the minority can use it or not. anyways, we will have a way around it..
Most of majority do not know how to root....the woman in tech support...trained in this...had no idea what it even means nor did she have clue about some basic internal information. There should be way to use with root....I do not agree that they've considered us...developers that want root. Again let me repeat...banks use 192 bit high encryption...They should do the same. My device isn't all of a sudden horribly vulnerable just from root. Sorry but you are wrong.
Even if you manage to add it, won't work if you root again

Tried to use at a McDonalds, with 2 different credit cards. Both failed saying can't be used at this time. I will unroot and try again to see if this is the issue
It fails with the attached message...and only way it works is if you go into super SU each time and disable...which I guess I could do...it's just one extra step
Well my old Google Wallet apk worked today at the grocery store I will be using that till a work around is found. At least if you want to use NFC payments you can for now.
Google doesn't ha e to consider rooters and modders for this. When Google speaks of developers, there are two types in their mind...
Legit app developers.. And those who aren't... Guess which category a rooter belongs to? Everything Google has done up to this point security wise goes against rooting.
So what reason do they have to allow you, or anyone who roots their phone, usage to a system that uses their servers?
Especially when they're constantly patching and erasing known root methods with every new version of Android..

Do you mean un-checked the "Enable Superuser" checkbox? I'm using SuperSU Free v.2.45 by Chainfire.
Thank you!
Yes the checkbox in SuperSu ...as for whom they consider developer...that's really dumb. No I don't make applications but I'm an advanced user like most that own nexus. The fact they actually check for the su binary is idiotic. If that alone makes my device "vulnerable" then I would probably not use it at all. Also, the guy that's still using wallet, it will be forced on you soon. I attempted to reverse and it wouldn't allow me.

Is root available for Fire 5th gen OS 5.3.3.0?

This tablet cant clearly get its full potential without a pure version of Android... I've never rooted a device before, but I'm interested to see if there is a way to unlock this Kindle Fire 7 5th Gen with OS 5.3.3.0.
I tried to search on forums but it seems no one have tried yet.

Update to what - FireOS? Amazon does not publish a schedule. No official debloat script; many items can not be disabled/uninstalled without root.
Thanks! I have a kindle fire 5th gen tablet running 5.3.3.0. I've tried one click apks like kingroot, kingoroot and oneclick root.I could have rooted my device in the past but I was scared of using a computer due to my lack of knowledge. I have tried a windows program by Gates junior called debloater ( YouTube/ gadgethacks / disable without root ) The program claims to be able to disable system apps without root on android. I have used versions 3.85 and 3.90 ( latest ) and it works up to a point but doesn't finish. Is there anything else that will work without root?

- at present there are no known root exploits for FireOS 5.3.3.0
- be skeptical of any claims around disabling system apps on an unrooted device
- tinkering with the apps/tools/crapware that you mentioned is just asking for trouble
If and when an update for Fire OS 5.3.3.0 becomes available, how can I know if the new version can be rooted?

- watch the forums for root announcements
- uninstalling updates is usually worse then doing nothing - space savings will be minimal and the app will likely be less stable/secure/functional than a fully patched version

There are no downgrade options from 5.3.3.x; guaranteed brick. FireOS 4.5.3 is not even an option for this device. Best check your sources.

WARNING: a 5th/6th gen Fire running FireOS 5.3.2.1 or above will hard brick if a lower version of FireOS is reloaded/sideloaded. There is no known recovery; device is toast.
@nicklefloss - If you have information to the contrary please share the details. The world awaits your wisdom.
Reports are out that 5.3.3.0 can be downgraded to 5.3.2.1, but neither of those can be downgraded to anything lower. Considering that neither of them have root, they can pretty much be treated the same.

The answer is no. But I've been exploring every inch of my HD 8. Here's what I don't get. One of the most popular exploits, Dirty Cow, was supposedly patched correct? Thats one big reason for non root. Another is the addition of Selinux which essentially toggles the SU permissions with a flip of a switch.
I have a rooted Droid Razr M. I have been adding tweaks to the build.prop for a day or two when I haven't been exploring possible root options for this tablet. It just occurred to me to take a look at the HD 8 build.prop. According to the prop, Selinux is disabled:
Code:
ro.kernel.zio=38,108,105,16
#ro.kernel.qemu=1
#ro.kernel.qemu.gles=0
ro.boot.selinux=disable
Secondly, I very well could be reading this wrong, but according to 'Droid Examiner' the Kernel was compiled BEFORE the exploit was patched?!?!? See attached screenshot)

That's part of the problem. There are many that say you can't, but then when it finally happens, try searching for root 5.3.3.0. You'll get all those ones that say you can't and you MIGHT be able to find the one that says you can. It would be great if there was one thread that would be updated with the status of the various Fire OS versions and the root status of each. This thread was posted in May and was the first one I found for 5.3.3.0. I'm hoping someone has cracked it since and I just need to find the right thread.

Try the forum index: https://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/index-amazon-fire-2015-t3210485. XDA search function works well too if fed the proper queries.
No root for any version of FireOS above 5.3.2.1 [current as of the date of this post].
Yes - it would be great if there were one thread with all the relevant information perfectly updated. Alas, SOMEONE (a.k.a. a volunteer with a life outside XDA) has to maintain that thread while dozens of others are spontaneously created by undisciplined members with varying levels of information/misinformation.

I understand it's largely volunteer based. It doesn't help the way Amazon labels their devices either. I have the 5th gen, which is just the Amazon Fire. I just finally figured out how to find THAT in here (nothing against XDA, et. al.) so now I'm trying to figure out if I can revert my 5.3.3.0 refurbished replacement tablet to 5.3.2.1 since you've confirmed there is no root for 5.3.3.0.
It's really frustrating that you can't install much on these, even with an SD card.

Noob Question
Hello,
I have the Moto Z3 Play XT1929-4 with Android 8.1.0
I would like to root my phone without erasing anything if possible.
Is there a simple , easy to follow tutorial applicable to my phone / Android version? I tried searching the forum but could not find anything specific.
I tried Kingroot and Kingoroot apks on my phone and neither worked. I am totally fine using my PC to do this.
My goal is to be able to work with my Waze voices but I cannot access the Data folder unless my phone is rooted so I don't need anything fancy.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you !
I have been off XDA for a few years. I recently got a Verizon Moto Z3 put onto another carrier other than Verizon, It is working well but I am curious if I would be able to Flash a Stock Non Bloated Rom (likely a Verizon rom Id assume, since its a Verizon phone originally) to the device with out affecting its port over... please provide any help you may be able to. Phone was taken from Verizon and moved to Metro by Tmobile. If you need additional details please ask.
I am familiar with Odin and the Flashing process, just a few yearas out of practice.
Thanks
What's the sku for the bootloader unlockable model? Is it XT1929-4? I'm about to pick one of these up and I want to get the right one.
So to my understanding since I happened upon the Verizon variant of the z3 I'm pretty much screwed as far as unlocking the bootloader and rooting this bad boy huh.

You can always try Motorola unlocking page
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
But if it was bought through Verizon it's not likely.

Ya I tried that first thing. Pulled the bootloader code from the phone and ran it but it's not eligible to be unlocked. Some one told me patching the boot.img file with magisk would give root but with a picked bootloader I'm kinda weary of trying it.

Afraid to Update to Pie?
So I bought 2 XT1929-4 Z3's, one for me & one for my wife. I did all theuupdates (ota) & rooted it w/Magisk. All was well until I went to use the camera. It just wouldn't work, ever. So I unrooted & returned it. I'm now using the one I got for my wife and I'm scared to accept the Pie OTA because of my first experience. This phone works great & I haven't unlocked it or rooted it. I don't want to ruin this one too.
can anyone tell me if they've done this OTA without issues?
Lately my phone is sluggish. When I open an app it is a delay of about a minute and when playing a game it constantly freezes and all apps give a pop up message of the app is not responding to wait or close the app. Is there any way to fix this?
