Need help Rooting Moto X (5.1) (Unlocked Bootloader) - Moto X Q&A

Hello I'm new to rooting and really all of this and I can't flash TWRP onto my Moto X 2013 (on 5.1). My phone's bootloader is unlocked, but I've been having trouble actually rooting it. I have no problems getting to fastboot and I'm confident I've been following instructions accurately.
I've been following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/how-to-how-to-root-5-1-unlocked-t3140217
I've made sure I have everything installed, and my adb and mfastboot are set-up correctly for use in CMD. I'm even using TWRP 2.8.6.0 since the guide I'm using said there's an issue with 2.8.7.0. However, when I use the command mfastboot flash recovery twrp.img (I renamed TWRP) it says:
(bootloader) Variable not supported!
target max-download-size: 768MB
error:cannot load 'twrp.img': No error
Can someone give me a pointer as to what I'm doing wrong please? I'd really like to get my Moto X rooted. I've tried tons of guides and I always get to this step and this is where it goes wrong.

It's possible that the adb and fastboot you're using isn't working correctly. I recall seeing the same error.
This is what I used at first=> https://mega.nz/#!lEARkTyT!Jx-ZXnMMk0Cyq0i3Yv56LT3AWv-s5s-cRdJAMQATKT4

Qivine,
I'm having the same issue I think that you had...
I am able to successfully flash twrp to my phone, but then when I boot into fast boot and choose the recovery option, it just goes black.
What steps worked for you to root your phone?
Thanks,
Fishmaniam

can i copy my phone firmware?

tl;dr version: i have a rooted, unlocked phone with twrp. I want to make a copy of my phone firmware, as if i had gotten the .img from here: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0 (mine is not listed there, hence the reason).
is it possible?
------
I must have an obscure version of the moto x, XT1050.
I looked on the firmware repository and it is not listed http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0
Can I back up my own? and also possibly submit it to the repository?
I've never done it before so I don't know what the steps are.
edit: the firmware currently on my phone is 139.4.6.ghost_row.ACG.en.US there are some that are close to that number but I've never found an exact match for this one I have on my phone. According to the moto website it is the original firmware. (under ACG regional carriers) https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/prod_answer_detail/a_id/94927/p/30,6720,8696
I contacted moto asking if it were possible to download it somewhere, and they were not helpful. I was basically told they don't have it (which I found very odd).
If you're rooted with a custom recovery, you can do a nandroid backup.
If you're not rooted, I don't know of any way to backup your whole system. Sorry.

what other steps do I need to do after rooting?
You need to,
Unlock bootloader.
Flash custom recovery with fastboot.
That's actually it. You don't actually need to Root yet. You can go to backup in custom recovery and run it. Done.
And I'd you really want, you can copy the backup to your PC for safe keeping.
Now, if you can't or won't unlock your bootloader, you can't flash a recovery.
edit:
I never managed to get any version of philz working, not sure why. twrp-2.8.0.1-ghost.img seems to work however. along with SuperSU-v2.16
I followed these instructions:
in adb type:
mfastboot flash recovery twrp-2.8.0.1-ghost.img
if it works, on the phone it will list some lines of text and the word 'done' at the bottom.
afterward, highlight the word 'recovery' then press the Volume + button to select it and it should boot into twrp.
Try Philz.
x000x said:
i've already unlocked it, officially through moto. big problem is trying to find a recovery that will work with this model. most don't list compatibility with it... so i'm kind of in the dark. i just tried twrp 2.8 from here http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/234 and got <bootloader> variable not supported!

I took a shot in the dark and tried the Verizon version since there was none for the xt1050...but it didn't work.
But i am unsure about something. am I supposed to be using mfastboot for Philz too? Or is mfastboot just for use with twrp?

Fastboot or mfastboot should work to flash either.
I tried two different versions of philz Moto X unified (ghost)
- 6.58.7 and VZW (xt1060) - 6.41.6 but unfortunately neither worked.
I tried twrp again (this time with mfastboot) and got the following message
mfastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.8.0.1-ghost.img
(bootloader) Variable not supported!
target max-download-size: 768MB
sending 'recovery' (8376 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.718s]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 0.811s]
finished. total time: 1.529s
...then i rebooted recovery and twrp wasn't there. I'm not sure where to go from here
You need to go directly into recovery after flashing. No reboot. Or it won't stick.

Maybe I missed a step or overlooked something.
edit: on my phone i see
getvar max-sparse-size
getvar max-download size
downloading 8577024 bytes
done
flashing recovery
done
edit: Ok, I figured out what the problem was. I was getting confused about pressing the + volume button on the word recovery. I've now successfully installed SuperSU.
So... I still don't know how to do this. I'm not really looking to make a backup file, but a 1 to 1 copy, as if i had gotten it from here http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0
my device/firmware is not listed there, so it appears the only option is to try to get it off my phone instead.
Although, the more i read the more it seems like what I am trying to do is impossible
A nandroid backup from recovery is the only way.

[Q] After flashing TWRP, XT1063 only boots to the unlocked warning screen

My apologies if this has already been posted. I've been looking all morning but haven't seen anyone with the same issue.
Unlock bootloader: no problem.
Flash TWRP: I downloaded from http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/275, and I got an error about partition size mismatch, but that's ok, right?
But when I try to enter recovery, all I get is the warning screen that my phone is unlocked. The drivers are certainly installed correctly, and fastboot is working fine. I just can't get into recovery to flash a ROM!
Restoring to 4.4.4 stock worked like a charm.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...dows-tool-moto-g-2014-xt1064-restore-t2957167
I've re-enabled USB debugging. Do I dare try to flash a custom recovery again?

You can use Flashify to make a backup of your current recovery and to flash TWRP.img. should work like a charm.
But Flashify requires root, I see? The reason I'm trying to flash a custom recovery is so I can root in the first place.

You're right. Latest motorola driver and [TOOL]Minimal ADB and Fastboot will do the trick.
Sorry, I should have clarified that when flashing TWRP, I've already been using fastboot.exe from a command line (and administrator level), with the drivers correctly installed. That's how I was able to unlock in the first place.
I did try it with the version of Fastboot you linked to (what I have works peachy for my Nexus 7), still the same thing. I can't boot into recovery and only get stuck at the Motorola unlocked warning.

Oh. Sorry. Can you post the output (terminal & device) of
Code:
fastboot devices
fastboot flash recovery NAME_OF_RECOVERY.img
I'd done "fastboot devices" already to verify, and it returns the serial number, though as I said it's clearly working since I was able to unlock as well as flash recovery. I'm flashing "TWRP2801-titan-motog-2014.img" that I downloaded from the TWRP site, and fastboot gives the standard messages about size and success (and my phone gives the size mismatch error).
It's so strange to me. I've flashed a custom recovery dozens of times on both generations of my Nexus 7s, but I've never seen this.

Yeah......have to meditate about that problem....... is your battery low? Fastboot mode of the device gives me all sorts of problems if it detects low battery
I had been using fastboot at 100% (literally finished a full charge) and 84%, but thanks for the continued attempts at explanation.
Oh, did you check the md5 checksum of your download?
Ah, good thought! I rarely do, but I did just now...and they're the same. It's crazy, isn't it?

If you are willing to risk it, try a fresh download and try again. I've flashed TWRP more than 20 times by now and never recieved an error whatsoever. It basically the easiest thing to do.
Incase you are stuck again, don't reflash the entire stock rom. Just flash the recovery.img from the stock rom files.
OR
Try this:
HOW TO ROOT MOTO G 2014 with Temporary Custom Recovery
Cheers
I've flashed a custom recovery many a time and have helped people through it, though on Nexus 7s.
Now shall I compound the mystery? I didn't think yet to use ADB to make my phone reboot to recovery. I had assumed recovery wasn't working. So here we go, after booting into Android:
adb reboot devices: my phone's there.
adb reboot recovery: TWRP's working?! And now root is complete!
It doesn't make sense to me why I can't get into recovery from the bootloader, but I can get into it with the simple ADB command. But I appreciate all the help, thanks!

Thank you for replying.
The instruction that I followed was a bit different. I mean most commands are the same but few:
I did: mfastboot.exe flash system system_sparsechunck.0 to 7 instead of flashing system, motoboot and gpt!
This must be the reason then why I cannot flash OTA and also why the system/software is showing "modified" in the bootloader.
I will try the commands from motorola site and report back.
Edit: I tried with the Motorola instructions to no avail! When trying to flash system: max sparse target 256 mb
Error: cannot load system image NO ERRORS
Also the software status remains "modified".
I'm stuck on this too. I can get my phone into fastboot, but I don't think the phone has USB debugging on since I just wiped it to factory settings. Any other options?

Open a terminal in whatever folder you have the recovery on your pc and you can boot the recovery with
Code:

this will boot your device to the recovery instead of flashing the recovery to the device. You can use the recovery just the same as if it were installed.

My phone is bricked, need the complete Fastboot flushable signed 28.2 firmware, Oreo 8.1 May Update for the USA retail model of x4

I have the OTA. Would you be able to use that?
Why not just flash 28.1 full firmware and just take the ota to 28.2 that it offers immediately?
I thought it was possible to downgrade via the fastboot method with any firmware. Doesn't have to be 28.2 to at the very least get your phone back working.
try flashing OTA. adb sideload it.

Are you not able to flash 28.1?
when I try, it says image validation failed. I NEED 28.2 or higher
see, my boot loader was locked when I tried to flash a different rom. I didn't know I needed to unlock the boot loader I thought that step was optional. now im stuck with a phone that only boots to Fastboot, will ONLY accept SIGNED STOCK 28.2 or higher.
Can try https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=229118 or https://firmware.center/firmware/Motorola/Moto X4/Stock/XT1900-1/
See if it will accept an earlier version. Couldn't hurt in your situation.

Have you tried using a different computer or USB port?
Have you ever unlocked the bootloader before? If not, you could send it to Motorola for replacement.

Not sure what to tell you from here. Just make sure not to rush any steps due to frustration or impatience.
I was able to return my first Moto X4 on warranty due to playing around with flashing. I'm sticking 100% stock till we get official lineage.

Bad eticate to post about your issue on multiple threads especially when you have your own. I'm sorry, there is no timetable. Could be tomorrow, could be months. This is the risk in flashing, end even worst in our case since Lenovo has not released factory images.

see, my boot loader was locked when I tried to flash a different rom. I didn't know I needed to unlock the boot loader I thought that step was optional. now im stuck with a phone that only boots to Fastboot, will ONLY accept SIGNED STOCK 28.2 or higher.
