Can I install MIUI ROMs trough TWRP like any other ROM? - Xiaomi Mi 5 Questions & Answers

I just get the Mi5 and like I said in other se treads, im kind desapointed with the MIUI mostly because the touchscreen, performance and the notifications bar. I realy into adveture myself in the world of the custom ROMs, like CM 14.1, but my doubt is.. Can I only go back to complete Stock by flashing MIUI by Fastboot or can be installed trough TWRP like any other ROM?

official MIUI - use MI flashtool via fastboot method only
unofficial MIUI - flash via TWRP recovery or MI flashtool will also work

Sure you can. Actually I used twrp to update the stable version of miui for countless times. It is OK, at least for my 64G mi5

No. Official rom you must need miui flash tool.

you can flash Custom recovery form EDL mode even in bootloader locked

Hi. What would be the safest way to go back to global stable rom? I am on miui eu 6.11.10. Boot loader is unlocked, and my recovery is twrp 3.0.2.0. In recovery I get error message when I try to clear cache "can't mount cache". I just want to be able to receive ota, got tired of changing roms. Thanks

Hi I'm on eu Stable 8.1.6. I want to flash developer Global 7.1.19. What is the safest way? Can I do it by TWRP and what I should wipe?

Yes; if you do a backup via TWRP of your miUI rommed device: sysimage + data + boot
advice: save it outside of the device (your computer, etc) for storage.
Then you can go frolicking with wathever rom you want, when tired put back in the device the backup files; reboot in recovery and via TWRP do a restore.
advice 2: as a baseline for a good/solid backup save also "efs" (that is the modem/sim stuff).
Why sysimage and not system?
Because that is an image (all the bytes) and the other is just the bytes in use; so sysimage will be a larger (in mb/gb) file but a more robust one (backup wise).
...
and for the two who inserted their personal questions in this semi-old thread...

the TWRP website with mi5 version, wich the latest is "twrp-3.0.2-3-gemini.img" 2016-11-20 https://twrp.me/devices/xiaomimi5.html
the mi5 forum: http://en.miui.com/forum-92-1.html
the rom download page with the official flashing guides: http://en.miui.com/download-299.html
Because to do what you ask you have the recovery method and the fastboot method.

Going from eu to global ROM by TWRP what should I wipe (data, system, dalvik, cashe...)?

Installing Official MIUI using TWRP Discussion

Hey Guys, anyone already tried the link below on installing Official MIUI using TWRP?
How to Install Official Rom with TWRP Recovery!
I've been meaning to try Official MIUI for a long time now, and by doing so I ran obstacles along the way either using MIFlash tool or TWRP - nothing works. But I just saw the method I linked above, and could be the missing piece I need to install the rom thru TWRP.
The OP of that tried it with Redmi 3S. So I'm just wondering maybe someone here already made it worked with MI5?
I could update from global dev 6.11.10 to global dev 7.1.19 with miui built in updater . After downloading nougat it rebooted to twrp and installed the rom normally. The only thing is i lost twrp replaced by stock one .
Download latest MIUI and flash normal with twrp if update is fastboot method twrp replace to stock recovery

recommended is for you to wipe data, system, dalvik and cache to avoid possible force close window pop out when opening an app, however if you are going to one rom to another eg. aosp-miui global-dev or anything in particular i found out that wiping everything (avoid the efs partition of course) is the best choice for peace of mind, one final thought is only do this if you had other means to bring your phone back to life if other recovery method such as the ability to boot into edl mode is working for you and always do a full system backup of your current rom just in case, hope that helps

Currently, I am using MIUI EU rom and TWRP 3.0.2.0 . Ive tried several times of flashing official global MIUI and failed several times. So tried my luck with miflash tool months ago, but still unsuccessfull. And that's the reason I posted the method above, maybe it is the thing that I am missing.
But, it still continues to puzzle me why others , and even you, can successfully install official MIUI thru TWRP. weird.
can't find the line they talk about in that script. Did anyone managed to install miui trough TWRP on the Mi5?

Cant return to MIUI from LineageOS

Wipe everything
Install global developer zip file
When reboot, twrp says no OS installed
Help pls
if the recovery method of flashing the full rom fails, then you have no other recourse except to flash via fastboot method.
take note of this "Please wipe all data in Recovery mode if you want to update to a discontinuous ROM version, or downgrade to an older ROM version using MIUI full ROM pack. If you upgrade from MIUI Stable ROM based on Android M to MIUI Developer ROM based on Android N, please flash it via Fastboot update. Recovery update might cause upgrade failure."

The reason is, that you can't flash OFFICIAL Chinese (Developer/Stadle) Rom with cusom recovery (TWRP). But you can flash anything esle. Like Lineage OS. If you want to use MIUI Rom, you have to flast a Xiaomi.eu ( developer or stable) rom. NOT OFFICIIAL CHINESE !!! If you prefer Official Chinese Global rom, you must download a FASTBOOT rom (not recovery) , and flash it in fastboot mode, with MiFlash.
instead of beating around the bush, why not follow the official procedure of flashing an official miui rom
if you are coming from a custom rom, as specified herein?:
http://en.miui.com/a-234.html
When can we expect official RR for mi max 2?
It was already available for redmi note 4 which is having the same processor.
You have to wait for custom Rom until miui release the kernel source which is must have to develop a custom one. please be patience...
If you flash rom with out error, Even no os installed warning, you can boot into system without problem.

Please help to install ROM in [Raphaelin]

Please help me. I can't seem to understand what exactly I need to do in order to install a custom ROM on my K20 Pro (Global 10.3.5.0.) I have tried following this (https://forum.xda-developers.com/k20...0-pro-t3953844) post thoroughly and others as well, but can't seem to exactly understand what I am required to do. Most custom ROM's state [Raphael], but as I purchased this device in India, it would most probably be [Raphaelin], after unlocking the Bootloader and installing TWRP, am I supposed to flash a Custom ROM (for ex. Lineage OS) directly or would I have to install a ROM which would make my device [Raphael]? Vendor and Firmware have gone over my head, I do not understand what I need to di. If someone could help me out, It would be mean a lot. Thank you.

If you're running stock MIUI and haven't moved to any custom MIUI's till date then you can straight away flash LOS. Moreover, most of the custom roms work on multiple vendors irrespective of whether it is a China Vendor or India or Global. It doesn't matter till the time the developer specifically asks you to be on a particular vendor.
Vendor isn't a dreaded thing. It's just the drivers needed to run the various components in the device (BT, WiFi etc). Till the time you don't wipe the vendor partion in twrp, you would always be good to go. You could carry on flashing custom roms w/o careing about the vendor.

Thank you very much for your reply. So, just to check if I have understood correctly. I can just install TWRP and then flash Lineage OS straight away, right? I checked (https://forum.xda-developers.com/k20-pro/development/rom-lineageos-16-0-t3965311), and it mentioned:
Instructions :
Download the latest build and GApps
Reboot to recovery
Flash proper vendor and firmware
Flash the latest build and GApps
Reboot
What is "proper vendor and firmware"? And would I also be required to flash this?
Thank you.

Go back to the Lineage instructions and read immediately below that. It starts P.S.
It explains exactly proper vendor and firmware means.
No you won't need to install anything for this step

Nope ! You don't need to flash vendor + firmware as you already running an untouched stock MIUI build. That is for people who are coming from either modified MIUI builds (EU, Miroom etc) or custom roms with a different vendor (India device running on China Vendor)
Custom roms don't carry the Vendor Firmware files and you can only modify the existing Vendor when you move to other region stock or custom MIUI roms.
Back up your data on Internal storage to a safe place either on a PC or OTG. Skip this step if you have nothing important.
Boot In TWRP
Wipe System, Data , Cache , Dalvik
(Don't reboot at this point, Not Even a Recovery reboot)
Flash LOS
Flash GApps
Go to Advanced Wipe and Format Data by typing Yes
Reboot

Are you booting into MIUI at least once after flashing it, before flashing anything else?
I've stopped doing the mount/unmount. I now always reboot back into TWRP after formatting data, seems more reliable.
In TWRP do a factory reset, then format data, then reboot back into TWRP.
After this install the ROM you want

If you want to flash something else, remove lockscreen security first before flashing. This should allow you to dirty flash an update, or clean flash a new ROM, without problems. You only need to format data when flashing over MIUI.
If you get into problems and you cannot successfully get a custom ROM working, this is when you need to flash MIUI first.
You only need to flash vendor/firmware files when the custom ROM recommends/requires a version that is different to what you currently have.

The emoji's screwed up my reply. Try again.
1. Next time create a new post, don't resurrect a vaguely similar old post.
2. Restore MIUI with a fastboot ROM and try again. Use my guide here to help you install the ROM of choice.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/k20-pro/how-to/simple-guide-flipkart-owners-t4151007/post83329343
If you're not sure what you're doing, follow the guide exactly, do not freestyle.
1.Install any rom
2. In recovery factory reset or change data partition to ext2 and then again back to ext4
Reboot
It will boot.

When flashing you will actually need vendor and firmware files together.
These are taken from the official MIUI fastboot ROMs. You can find them repackaged in a single flashable zip file from here.
https://downloads.akhilnarang.dev/MIUI/raphael/
Flashing one of these files in TWRP is the easiest way to go.
You can also find then repackaged as separate zip files from here
https://xiaomifirmwareupdater.com/
This site has a much greater archive, so is good if you need an older version that you can't find in the other site. You will need to make sure you download vendor and firmware files for the same version.
You should always stick to the version that is for the region of your phone. e.g. Indian vendor and firmware for an Indian K20 Pro, etc.
Some ROMs use an OSS vendor and so this is included as part of the ROM install. In which case there is no need to flash the MIUI vendor.
When a new version of MIUI is released, vendor and firmware files might get updated, to fix a bug or to add extra functionality. In this case some custom ROM devs will include them so that they get the bug fixes or extra functionality in their ROM too. When this happens they will update the minimum vendor and firmware version requirements for their custom ROM - the version will be the actual MIUI version in which the vendor and firmware files were updated.
Where a ROM doesn't specify vendor and firmware and doesn't have an OSS vendor, then it normally implies that any version will work that is from MIUI based on the same Android version. In this case use the most recent version, which you will already have if you've kept up to date with MIUI updates.
When installing a new ROM, you will only need to flash vendor and firmware files if your current version is less than the required version of the new ROM.

flashing custom rom ( pixel experience plus edition) Keep Booting Into TWRP Recovery

I was using pixel experience ROM for some time and I tried to update to the latest plus edition. The installation guide recommended full format data and flashing. I did as instructed. Now I'm stuck in booting into TWRP recovery. I looked up a few kinds of stuff and none of them worked. Is anyone else facing the same problem? has anyone got a working fix? I tried removing the TWRP folder, re-flashing TWRP with TWRP and orange fox recover, and then flashing ROM. non helped. got a broken phone now any help is appreciated.

I had A12 then. I flashed pixel experience 12.1 on May 28(PixelExperience_Plus_raphael-12.1-20220528-1605-OFFICIAL.zip) and it went thru just fine. Now the updates of 8/20 bricked the phone.
After format data, I get the Readonly info screen, I swipe to allow modification, side loads the latest download PixelExperience_Plus_raphael-12.1-20220820-1448-OFFICIAL.zip, and restart, but back to TWRP recovery.
Some things I tried
0. https://wiki.pixelexperience.org/devices/raphael/install/
1. https://www.getdroidtips.com/keep-booting-twrp-recovery/
2. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/pixelexperience-stuck-in-bootloop.4435533/ ( it's shown for beryllium but I did for Raphael code with all files related to Raphael version such has recovery and pixel exp. img file
Any other flow I can try to get it fixed ?
I'm thinking to reverting back to MIUI is nth works.

Wipe everything, system, vendor, internal storage, dalvik, cache via advanced wipe, then flash firmware and vendor or if your rom has included firmware then just flash the rom directly. Try to boot into OS if it still bring back to twrp then again repeat the above steps and this time flash stock vendor and firmware from mi website and try to boot into OS.

All the best
yes using the team win version of TWRP. Used Orange Fox recovery. ( nice look and feel and features btw). But they didn't work either. What could I try more? Could I be able to revert back to MIUI stock ROM ? let me know if you have good resources. Thank you very much for your time and efforts

Back to MIUI
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/flash-tool-guide-use-xiaomi-flash-tool.4262425/
flashed stock miui rom for now. Will tap into pixel rom in few days.
now that I think, I think I did a blunder, thinking I was in A12. Can you point me to A12 firmware for Redmi k 20 pro? I"m looking into https://miuirom.org/phones/xiaomi-12, but they seem to be recovery and not firmware. I'm not sure if recovery comes with firmware. As I need to format to install, will the firmware stay or not?

Xiaomi has stopped updating on Android version 11.
Which rom do you want to install?

Why bothering to manually search here and there for official ROMs
Install the app:
MIUI Downloader - Apps on Google Play
MIUI upgrade app for Mi users.
play.google.com
and the app will show you links to download the latest Global, EEA, etc, zip/recovery or tgz/fastboot, or you can scroll through the older versions and pick an older if you wish
Btw, latest are MIUI 12.5, A11 - there are no official A12 ROMs for Mi 9/Redmi K20 line of models
Even if they receive MIUI 13, it will be (for some already released, but eg China only, etc) it will be A11
Same issue, I guess this is it for me. Time to buy a new phone rather than accidentally losing data from time to time with custom ROMs. I wonder if they didn't know such issue exists before releasing it to the public.
