Heating and battery drain issue - OnePlus 3T Questions & Answers

Hello,
Today when I arrived at work at 9 AM, I had ~ 85% battery, after listening to music on Soundcloud for about 30 minutes on my way to work. At ~ 10 or 10:30 , i`ve noticed that while my phone was sitting on the desk without using it, several battery draining, from 85 to 65% since I got in the office. It looked weird to me, but I didnt pay attention to it.Also, I`ve noticed that the phone was heating more and more, and this heat was noticeable, even tho I`m using a hard back case on my phone. 2 hours later, it was at 30% and I was terrified. I`ve checked the Battery option in settings, and the only consumer displayed there was Android System, which drained ~12% from the battery, and some apps that were having an average of 3-4%.
After 2-3 reboots, the problem still persisted and then, after checking the battery again, guess what : facebook and facebook messenger show up with 20% and 14% battery consumed during these 5 hours, even if I didnt used the phone at all. This started all of a sudden and I dont know why. I`m running nougat oos4.0, from 31st december and this is the 1st time I`m seeing this issue. I`ve uninstalled both apps, and the problem is gone. Also, last saturday I wiped my phone because it was a bit laggy after the nougat update, so there shouldnt be any problems. Anyone encountered this issue with both apps ?
Cheers

Uninstall Facebook. It's a know battery draining app and always has been. Use other apps that access Facebook like Metal. Works well without the heavy battery drain that happens with the Facebook app.

Please let me know, i popped in and swapped my phone for another one and ive just noticed FB is using more battery than any other app

I must have a peach of a 3T, I use the facebook app and through out the day and texting my wife all day at work I have it charged at 100% at 4:00 am then by the time I get home, at 4pm i stil have 65-70 % left, actually last night I forgot to charge my 3T and I had 63% battery when I went to bed at 9 pm last night and woke up at 4 am this morning and still had 52%, didn`t think that was bad at all for over night., but I have not had any issues with my phone or battery or over heating issues.:good:

It's too early to make final assumptions, but it seems that the battery draining has stopped, or at least it's not draining as fast as it had been... (I have lost just 2% within an hour, where I had lost around 15% during the previous one) ...

I haven't experienced any battery draining problem until today...
Also I saw a lot of people complaining about the same Facebook & messenger issue today on Oneplus's Facebook post...
So maybe it's being caused by an update of those apps...

This is my thinking too ... but there has been no update

This sudden battery drain is horrible. 100 to 0 in 12 hours. Well I don't have any of those apps (Fb, messenger, twitter etc) and still am experiencing heavy battery drain. Some users over at Reddit have claimed it to be due to the Google Calendar updates. Lets see if this subsides over the next few days.

Its a server update, not in the app

Not sure if this is coincidence or not but, I flashed a custom Lineage rom last night and the CPU usage at idle was through the roof, the phone was draining like mad and heating up. I don't have the FB app installed. I then flashed another ROM and it went away. Is there something in certain Roms causing this? Again, I don't have the FB app installed, but I'm fine now on a custom Rom.

After uninstalling Facebook & messenger using metal app..
Battery life is great so far...

Dont think its related to google, more like facebook, since both fb and messenger were showing in battery consumption as main drain apps.
This is the first time when my op3t heats and also drains that fast. I usually get 1,5 days ( only browsing, texting, and social apps, no games). The problem solved after i uninstalled those apps

Yes FB and Messenger overheated and drained my phone today. Not impressed.
Seems to be behaving this evening however.
I think it was some sort of a server-side glitch as I found a mention on Reddit of a similar thing happening a year ago.

I found there might be some defective on software or sth else,
some batteries drain so fast, some are not.
for example, mine never last over 24hr even i turn off everything, use only 2G, with no app installed.
and it's instable, sometimes it drains so fast, sometimes not. I don't know why.
Until we get a software update probably will be great battery like the update for one x

Same here my android system is on top, even after deleting some stock apps and disabling fast demorcacy. I usually get screen time of around 3 hours 10 mins which is poor.

I think that is why many of us expect a huge battery improvement after updating to JB ,perhaps the newer system wont be so power hungry.
these screenshots are fun and all but they are totaly irrelevant.
hoe much USE time are people gettng is whats interesting.
so screen on time.
as the goal is no drain with screen off and as long as possible screen on time (this is when you use apps and so on).
my phone can be on for 2 days and still hve 95% juice left but thats kinda irrelevant if i dont touch it.
when i use it non stop my use time averages on 4 hours and 15 minutes so far.
all the people having problems with battery drain must have either bad apps installed of verry poor wifi/3g connections.
as in a good serup with no bad apps and good signal wifi should not drain battery at all if your not using it.
i would so like all people with issue to lend me there phones for 3 days to see if in my stable envourement they have the same issues.
im fairly sure that all these problems are signal and user related and that it has nothing to do with the hardware.
My phone would only give me 2 hours max if the mobile data is on with sync off facebook sync set to 1 hour and hotmail sync set to 1 hours. But if wifi is on throughout the day i would get around 3 hours 15 min average with sync on hotmail set to push and facebook sync set to 1 hour. The battery is really poor as i only use it generally for txting whatsapp and just a bit browsing thats all nothing else. When i watch videos my phone consumes less battery, than normal usage which i do everyday. The highest screen time i have ever got was 4 hours 15 mins thatd because i watched a video for almost like 3 hours thats why. But the battery is still really poor

My android system also consumes a lot of power, its always on top no matter what. I am running on V_10H I disabled some stock apps using titanium backup and used fast demorcacy but the only difference I could see was android wakeups had been much lower thats all and so less power consumption when phone on standby thats all.

this is totally relevant information for regular users.
many people complain about battery drain and that a custom rom is the cause or custom kernel when its available, but what shows that it is not, is when you can place your handheld mobile or tablet alone with wifi set to instant off and you got 3g disabled and it lives for days without loss of battery, you know that it is stable.
when you suddenly lose battery in hours and previous tests showed it was lasting days, you can be sure you got battery infected apps trying to activate your cpu all the time.
i'd like to buy this phone but i'm a bit afaid of the battery drain. people who says it last 2 days with normal use other says that with gaming and browsing lasts 10-15h but a lot says that the battery lasts just 6 h with normal use... can someone who owns this phone and he use it with a middle-intense use (texting, browsing, gaming some time) tell me how much lasts the battery please??

Well, my usage pattern is kinda light, but still...
- took it off the charger at 7:15 am
- 3g data permanently on while I'm not at home (from 7:20 til 18:00 or 19:00)
- wifi on when I'm at home (during the night too, I never switch the phone off)
- sync always on (gmail, whatsapp)
- received a couple short phone calls, let's say 5-6 mins
- received a bunch of emails, say about 15 or something
- some messaging (on whatsapp and gtalk, I don't use sms)
- some facebook, let's say 15 minutes (through mobile website 'cause FB app sucks big time, always had and most probably always will)
- some net browsing looking for a few stuff, let's say 5-10 minutes
- checked a couple forums on tapatalk a couple times
- updated 3 or 4 apps on wifi
- downloaded a 50mb game on wifi and played it for like 10-15 minutes
- ebook reading on moon+ for 1 hour and 30 minutes (maybe even longer, didn't check the exact time)
I connected it to the charger when it reached 12% battery at about midnight THE NEXT DAY (yes, that is around 41 hours without recharging it)
Overall, I can say I'm satisfied, at least for my standard usage...
- Stock v10h firmware, no root (yet).
- Nova launcher since 5 minutes after buying it
- I usually keep brightness quite low unless I'm out in the open under the sun, good thing about this phone's screen is that it's usually very well visible even with only a 20% brightness. If I need to use it in full sunlight, I conveniently placed a full brightness widget on my homescreen, and then back to 20% with one click when I'm done. No autobrightness 'cause I don't like much how it's set to work on this phone (was kinda better on my old i9000, but oh well, 1 click widget and I'm good to go, no sweat)
- Disabled 3 or 4 stock apps (through app settings, no titanium or other stuff)
I noticed that battery usage was kinda higher before disabling those stock apps, I guess one of them was a powermonster of sorts (I suspect the meteo one, but I'm not sure)
- No facebook notifications of course, not for battery-related reasons but just 'cause I simply hate them... but I guess that's nice on the battery too

[Q] Play Services Battery Use - what is normal?

On my old Note, when looking at battery usage (and on my nexus 7), "Screen" was always the top listed user of battery life, and below that were apps that i'd been using.
This couldn't be farther from reality on my note 3, however!
Right now:
47% - not charging. 1d 12h 8m 15s on battery
Google Play Services - 59%
Android OS - 9%
Cell Standby 7%
Screen 7%
Granted, I am not using the phone very heavily (obviously), and I have no complaints about the battery usage (I've been skipping nights of charging because-I-can with this, which I could never do before). I just don't understand why it's showing so much battery usage as being due to Google Play Services...
Is this:
a) A problem with my phone that could be remedied (how?), resulting in even more ridiculously long battery life
b) The battery usage numbers are bull****, at least for low overall usage.
c) Normal - Samsung's engineers are miracle workers and managed to make a very efficient screen
d) Normal - Google Play Services is a huge battery hog in general.
If it's d), can anything be done to rein it in? The potential battery life without that drain is so tempting!

A. go to settings, connections, location services, either turn it off or turn it off and on again but disagree with the google pop-up. Google is constantly waking your phone up to log your location to "better your experience/better ads"

So it's the "Use Wireless Networks" option under location services, then? That one can't be checked off without agreeing to the popup. Let's see if that improves anything.

I ask because, well, you've been on battery about the same length of time as I had, with no obvious offending apps shown in battery usage, yet had 28% battery left vs 47% on mine...

ya haha, just used it slightly more than you- more awake time with screen on.
Okay, this has yielded improvements.
But now Swype+Dragon is listed as taking 53% of battery usage! How?!
Though I'm down to ~1% per hr drain, maybe I shouldn't complain.

53% of how much time? 1 to 3 hours, no worries. Up to 6 or 7 hours up time probably an issue. More and definitely a problem. It is a matter of perspective. 50% of an hour is 30 minutes while 50% of 10 hours is 5 hours. It is hard to tell if there is a problem with these high percentages if they are based on short total time.
Sorry if that is long winded, but hope you get what I am trying to say.
1%/hour is not bad if there is some use time on it. If it was during down time, still not bad but shoot for .5 to .8.

I get exactly what you saying.
1 day 10 hrs uptime, 53% on Swype + Dragon (well, 49 now, after doing some battery hungry stuff). Tapping that entry shows:
CPU total: 3h 3m 49s
Stay awake: 1d 4h 47m 28s
Data sent: 38.1 kb
Data received: 42.83 kb
1 day 10 hours is not bad but with only 3 hour and x minutes of screen time, I think you have an issue. I get between 1 day and 15 to 17 hours with 5.5 to 6.5 hours screen time. (edit:There are days I get worse and some days better. Depends on where I am at and what I am doing) Usually with 2 to 3 hours of music. Of course a lot of variables contribute to the difference between our results.
Try doing a battery pull and then keep track of a full charge cycle and see what happens.
Edit 2: just reread your post and saw that swype/dragon shows awake for 1 day 4 hours. Have you tried a different keyboard to see what happens? Is Dragon the speech to text program?

Yeah, for some reason swype now comes bundled with some speech recognition feature I never use.
The problem with a different keyboard is that I am practically paralyzed on my phone without swype I don't know how I used a phone without it. I'd have to set this up for a test when I'm not going to be using the phone much.
It's bad enough to be talking to my phone when i'm making a call, I don't want to be talking to myself when i'm not making a call. I think everyone looks crazy when they're on hands-free barking orders to their phone - where I live, you see a lot of people talking on hands free, but you also see a lot of crazy bums talking to themselves, and you can't tell them apart if they have a hat on, cause it hides the headset, except by judging how expensive their clothes are - and even then, hipster and homeless look pretty similar....

I disabled some of the permissions (location, read contacts, post notification) from Swype in AppOps.
I don't know if this was what fixed the issue, or whether Swype wound up in a "wakelock" through some one-time event.
Now, I'm seeing the screen at the top of battery usage, like it's supposed to be. Can't yet quantify the improvement in battery life, as I was using the phone more heavily the past 2 days since I charged it.
This phone is psycho. I thought my battery drain was fixed..but nope. Android OS is again killing it. My phone won't sleep. Better battery stats and wakelock detector doesn't tell me why. .in 11 hours my phone has been awake like 6 hours..While being in my pocket.

I read in another post to install GPS Status&Toolbox from playstore. I installed pressed menu button on phone ticked settings..then back arrow..ticked menue again then tools and it took care of the problem. Have no idea why but battery is back ontop

Bad Battery Issues

I'm experiencing some pretty poor battery life and can't seem to figure out what to do to make it any better. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Attached are screenshots detailing a typical day for me. Running stock 4.4.4 not rooted.
Need more details from the battery screen so we can we got often it's awake and what your service signal is over that time period. Also download better battery stats.
Here's a post about your top kernel wakelock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36736462&postcount=7049
Not really an issue.
And without root, you can view your app wakelocks, which make solving battery issues very difficult.
If you can't root, I suggest you start by turning location services completely off. Only use it when you need it, then off again. See if that helps. It's likely an app, or combination of apps... Especially social apps, exploiting location services.
Start there. And if you can root... We can see your app wakelocks and finding the issue could be far easier. ?
---------- Post added at 12:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:49 PM ----------
Also try things from post 2 in the battery help thread in my signature. ?
---------- Post added at 12:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:50 PM ----------
If your signal is ever low while on data, not WiFi... That can drop your battery level extremely quick.
I have been experiencing similar thing.. I'm at 19% now and 9hours 17 min. I am rooted running 4.4 has been declining for quite sometime..I also have noticed I've only had 2 bars at home..? Not an extremely have user but more than average.

Here's another example of a typical day for me that I took a while back. Anything look out of the ordinary? Didn't take a kernel wakelock one that day.
As I said, you need gsam root companion and then post times held awake and times waking device. Those are the important screens to see. And after a long discharge. A short time frame screen shot won't tell the story as well.
Without those we can only guess here.
Kj, I installed that app..I'm going to go threw the day, how do I post at the end of the day?

We're hijacking this thread.
Run from 100 to 10 or 15 percent left and take the screen shots in gsam. The main screen, and app screen and in app screen click the drop down and take shots of times waking device and held awake time.
No reboots or gsam resets.
Best to post tho in the battery thread in general. Or even the one in my signature. Just specify your device if you do that.
This thread is someone else's. ?
My moto x has been doing the same thing for the last two weeks or so. I'd burn through the battery down to about 10% in 10 hours with less than an hour of screen time.
Last night I decided not to plug my phone in to the charger when i got home. I used the phone throughout the night until i went to bed. The phone was literally stuck at 1% for about 25 minutes of use right before i went to bed. I woke up this morning and the phone was still on at 1%. It did die moments later. I think the battery stats are not calibrated correctly, but I'm not really sure. I'm going to try running it down to 0% a few times and see what happens.

I just want to help you in order to get good battery life..
These are the common mistakes that I made which causes battery drain-->
location on high accuracy, full brightness, WiFi always on, sync always on, screentime out minimize to 5s in order to save battery, Data enabled & Bluetooth always on..
Above shown are examples which leads to battery drain ..I personally use greenify(non-root) to stop running apps in background.. I have seen significant change in battery life by using this type of apps
As I said, for most helpful battery tips, and help if anyone wants it.... Go here.... Posts 1 to 4 are the important ones...
[Battery Life Help] Troubleshoot battery issues here!
Just specify your device for help, if not an N5. ?
I generally do a factory reset every six months or so and that significantly increases battery life. Not as good as the first few months but that's too be expected with an aging device w/o a removable battery

Just wanted to update after having a similar problem and letting my phone go all the way down to zero and automatic shutdown.
I charged my phone at work today and did not pull it off the charger until around noon. After having similar stats as the OP today is a different story.
I'm at 12 hours with 41% left. 1 hour 7 minutes of screen time. For the last couple of weeks I was often down to 15% after 12 hours or less.
I've been the same..I just spent the 25 for sunshine to unlock my boot loader and flashed a new kernel..

Battery Life on Android M

Hellow everyone,
I hope by now many of us have already flashed the developer preview of Android M.
This thread is dedicated to the Battery life of Nexus 5 (Hammerhead) on the developer preview build of Android M.
Please share your battery life experience, SoT, and how much battery is saved in the new "Doze" state.
Where is Doze in the preview? I had mine sleeping all night last night where do you look for it

But where is your sot?
It's only been out 24 hours. You need to give it at least a few charge cycles before even thinking about comparing battery life!
Last week I swapped in a new OEM battery manufactured this January after 18 months of use having a launch day device. Hopefully with that and this new M battery optimizations I'll regain my KitKat battery life.

It's a new feature involving what's essentially decreased sync rates when the phone hasn't beet touched in a while. Its automatic, and not something you can turn on. In the settings, you can disable the feature on an per-app basis.

Oh yeah, and as krs360 said, its so new, battery state is a bit wonky right now and itll take a few cycles to have a sense of how the optimizations change things. Personally, my phone's battery life has taken a huge hit these first two cycles.
After 5 hours of my normal usage, I'm at 80% still. Pretty damn good if you ask me. Better than the usual 50-60%.

Guys, here you can see my results today.
I unplugged the phone at 7am, then music from speaker for about 20 minutes, mid volume. WiFi.
From 7.30 am to 14.30 (2.30 pm), I have been under 4G.
In this period, I've used Facebook, Chrome, and listened to music from Spotify in streaming (headphones), 10 minutes of Youtube.
From 14.30 to 18.30 I've been under WiFi, Facebook and Chrome.
From 18.30 to 20.30 under 3G, Facebook and Chrome again.
I have used 169 MB of data by 3G/4G. 2h of screen, Google Now activated, localization on Save Battery mode, downloaded an app. During the day, I have been syncing Gmail, Kik, Whatsapp, Twitter, Facebook. I have chatted via Whatsapp for hours.
Manual luminosity, around 1/3.

Mine has been brutal on the N6, Google services reporting 36% battery drain although I suspect it is being misreported.
Mine is about 30-50% worse, but I'll give it a few more days. Chrome and Google Play Services seem to love keeping the radio active. To be fair, my signal was iffy today (driving around), so I wasn't on Wifi at all.

B370 First Impressions

I have only been using it around 12 hours but it seems a lot snappier than stock MM and a hell of a lot better than the last round of beta's.
Memory management seems vastly improved.
Few little things are annoying me like sharp noises when making a call, black notification drawer.
Also my banking app (Barclays) doesn't work.
However so far there aren't any problems that will stop me from using this as a daily driver.
I can't comment on battery life yet as I only took my phone off charge a few hours ago.
What does everyone else think?
I think that's worth waiting I'm working on B336 since January (beta project) and I'm happy with battery, maybe performance could be a bit better. But if B370 is as good as you say, than all grand.
I guess there ia no app drawer and private space?

Private space and app twin are not there, same as USB OTG. Apart from that, it's working great, stable, fast, smooth, it's prettier than MM. I feel that battery life is worse than on MM - for now I get something like hour less screen on time than on MM (5 and a half vs 6 and a half hours). But, it's too early to tell - I found out only today that WiFi scanning was turned on, although I have turned it of while on MM. Also, seems like RAM management is even more aggressive on Nougat, and that's a bad thing for multitasking. There's additional bloat - Avast antivirus is included. I don't need f_cking antivirus on my phone.
Phone i much faster and fluid , remote app for telefunken tv does not work , cannot find tv , and no one app for locking the screen works , it locks the screen but when you try to unlock from fingerprint , asks for pin , otherwise everything is fast , great and beautiful....
I decided to update to B370..for now everything is smooth,but... One thing from MM is still here.
.Autofocus when rec video whit stock camera not working... Everythime I need to tap on screen to get focus..Huawei have to fix this.

Screen on time is not the problem. Standby Drain is the problem. If u dont use it much and leave it idle it drains without any reason.

No drain here in standby at B370. Everything working well. For example, going to sleep with 60%, after 8 hrs geting up with 58% left. Bluetooth works fine, Camera and Video focus working. No crashes or reboots. I dont know why a lot oft people having these Problems. Before i upgrade from MM, i maked sure that enough free space (5 GB) is available. After Upgrade i did a full Factory Reset.
