[ZE550KL] Let's talk about this cpu - Zenfone 2 Laser General

Hi guys, this is mostly a personal question but i wanted to know if you had something like this too.
Let's say, i have this phone since October 2015, i left it stock for over a year and worked like a charm. But things slow down eventually and i looked for which roms were in here. I was quite satisfied and all but i had the same problem with every rom.
The problem is about the cpu. After flashing any rom, the phone got hot really fast and battery drained a lot (i'm talking about cpu on 55-60°C and 2-3hrs battery life). Then i noticed there was a bug on the stock governor (interactive) and even if setting the minimum cpu freq to 200MHz, it wouldn't go below 800MHz anyway. The only thing i could do to go under 800 was to set 'conservative' governor (which is good for battery life btw) and poof, it went all the way from 200 to 1400. I could live with this, anyway.
Yust being curious i looked for stats and settings on stock rom, aaand it's the same here to. freqs from 200 to 800 are not used at all. And it doesn't even look like it's using cpu hotplugging.
By the way, do any other of you have this issue? If not, what could it be related to?

Are you on stock ZenUI? I do not experience the heating issues you encounter since I use CM13.0 12.21 Snapshot build.
I read somewhere that snapdragon 410 is locked at 800MHz as base frequency. Frequencies lower than 800MHz consumes the same amount of voltage as in 800MHz so there is no noticeable battery life improvement from underclocking, doing so only makes the user experience a bit laggy. Same goes for other phones with the same processor.
My advice is that if you are using stock ROM or custom ROM, don't touch the cpu governor settings. Currently there are no properly tuned kernels for our device.

[Q] Benefits of OC/UV

What are the benefits of OC/UV (particularly for CM7)?
I know of improved performance due to OC, but what does UV do in regards to performance. Also, how does an OC/UV kernel compare to one without the option?

You can do either or both but don't have to do both. At some point UVing will cause a crash. Right before that point it can cause performance issues. See the link below for instructions on how to find an optimal UV level to maximize battery savings and performance.

OCing improves speed but can also cause stability issues. For a captivate this usually isn't a problem until you get past 1.2 ghz. After that, it depends on the kernel but I have yet to find a kernel that is completely stable past 1.2 ghz under stressful conditions. Samsung designed the processor to handle 1.2 ghz and in theory it can go up to at least 1.6.
Like everyone before me has said, OC will make your processor work more (which will eat up more battery, and send the temps a bit higher).
UV is a way to "fix" that problem by controlling the voltage used by each Mhz/Ghz range. The mini guide that QuarkGluonSoup posted is a great way to start off.
Most Captivates start have random errors past 1.2Ghz, but the highest I've seen (stable) are 1.4Ghz.

Odd as it sounds, my battery life on CM7 is close to 50% better when it is OC'ed to 1.2 ghz and UV'ed than it was on the froyo ROMs under the same conditions.
That really is odd :S I think I'll try it myself.

i am fairly new to rooting phones. i just installed cyanogen 7 on my htc hero. works much faster than the stock. had heard that you can overclock the cpu. i downloaded CPUmaster free and lets me clock cpu to 768MHz. have been doing some research on this and have come across a few things. so really just one question; 1) what is the fastest you can clock the cpu with it still being stable?
help with this would be very much appreciated!
Depends on a variety of factors and every Hero is different. Depends on the ROM your running, kernel, etc. You can play around with capped and uncapped kernels but no one can really give you an exact # but you..u'll just have to try tinkering with the settings. If your wise you will just select one of the governors located in Cyanogenmod Settings. I prefer SmartassV2,min. 362 max 691 its efficient and takes care of everything while prolonging the life of your battery. Also remember that overclocking for an extended period of time will overheat your phone and could cause damage, so keep an eye on the core temp while playing with ur cpu settings.

Some phones can't take more than 691, some can handle 768. I have found, for my phone, that 245/710 works great for me. I can see a marked improvement in snappiness at 710 over 691, but not really much at higher frequencies.
I used to use OnDemand as my scheduler, but with the newer .35 kernel I have liked the SmartassV2; I don't have any issues with music cutting out like i would with smartass or interactive. CM7, or most any of the roms built off of that, have the option in CM Settings to adjust both the frequency and governor so you don't need to install a 3rd party app to do so (it's under the "performance" heading). I also like to go into the spare parts app and set my animations to fast; that's just me though. I think the new CM7 builds have Jaybob's .35 kernel now instead of the .29. I have not seen an uncapped kernel that goes beyond 768 in a long time. There was one that jasonmaloney compiled that did 806 (I think) but that was pulled by him as it isn't good for the phone. just test it out and see what you like with what you have installed on your phone. Every phone is different even though they are the same.

To OC or not OC, that is the question

hi folks, thinking about leaving oc on permenantly (1200 mhz) I an aware of the dangers, but thought about getting some facts, my question is, how long have people been running art 1200 mhz without any issues, how many weeks or months?

1200mhz refers to the highest clock. Your phone doesn't stick to that frequency all the time. It generally scales from 100mhz to 1200mhz. It doesn't really matter if you overclock your device except for effects on battery and I don't think there would be any effect on the Hardware as much as that of an Overclocked computer cpu and considering the average number of months people tend to use their mobile device before getting a new and a better phone.

my phone spends approx 20% of its time at Max freq, thats 1/5 th of its time. I think there would be more potential damage than a computer cpu as these have much better cooling (fans), I just want to know how long people have run at say 1200 without any issues.

I'm been overclocking my SGS for over 6 months now, no issues at all.
"Standard" voltage values seems to work fine on my device (1350mV at 1200MHz, 1400mV at 1300MHz) but I've tried to undervolt a bit more than once and had no issues as well.

There are absolutely no dangers in OC/UV. The worst thing to happen is a freeze or reboot once in a while if u go too high. I've been having 1.5mhz w/ some UV for like 2 months and nothing happened so no worries.
Been doing that for about a month now. No problem.
Knowledge is Power. Guard it well.
there are no risks if you overclock your device,but of course depends on how you do it. first of all i would not go past 1300mV which is the physical limit of our beloved hummingbird..of course you can do that,but past 1300mV you are going to shorten the life of your CPU. if you change phone every year then,there's no problem
then if you want to overclock keeping safe voltage values just get Tegrak Overclock,don't activate the "CPU MAX frequency" option,go in optimization tab instead and push up the max frequency by little steps keeping the voltage at the default value of 1275. test it a bit till you reach the most stable one. for example my CPU it's totally rocksolid 'till 1132MHz at 1275mV,no more. but there are CPUs which can archieve better results. then if you want to optimize and save battery consumption you can play a bit with UV on the other frequencies,cheers

does anyone have a tried and working UV values for best battery life? I don't want any more performance, so I'm not looking for OC, but perhaps any idea what UV stays stable?
Well, it's easy the higher you OC, the more it will drain your battery. As for UV, I can't tell because the voltages are different for every device, Rom and kernel...

Usually undervolting -50mv for each speed will work for most devices, although its not recommended to decrease that much for speeds below 800mhz since it will affect your phone's wake up speed.
And tegra 2 cpu controller only supports minimum of 770mv, going anyway lower than this value will not have any effect.
My advice, try UV -25mv for 500mhz, and the rest above is -50mv. Some o2x can go -100mv, but you need to be lucky to own such device.

Mine is working perfectly on -75.
But when i go to -100, soemtime freezes device, so i use -75 regularly.
trying -50 across the board now, seems to run stable.
brw, how does lower voltage hurt the speed?
I can't really explain clearly since I do not know the technicals, but from what I read in xda, it will affect your speed, meaning 1.2ghz running at undervolted setting will not run the same as at stock voltage. Maybe its an efficiency issue, I do not know.
I thing that i experience, If you undervolt too much the few lowest clock steppings, you sometimes might not able to wake the phone from sleep because there is not enough power to wake it up.
I hope my explanation help you a little, and hopefully someone with more experience can give you a better explanation.
using -25mv ate 1.1ghz and 1ghz, -50mv at 800 Mhz, and -100mhz (750Mhz so its 770mhz because hardware limitations) on all other frequencies!
-50 mv is the limit for the device don't use below -50mv. but it dependes on your device. mine cannot UV it always gives me SOD i think my hardware phone is crap

When did you buy your phone?
I have one of the 10 first phones sold in Sweden and I cannot undervolt mine at all.
Just wondering if there's any correlation between manufacturing time and UVability (yeah I just made that word up).

Im using zaiben rom on my lg optimus 4x hd. The performance is poor. Overall laggy and horrible gaming. I dont like using non stock based rom as they always have some bugs. I tried custom kernel like iodak werewolf but it made my phone heat up like crazy and unusable while charging. Any solution?
Buy another device stock Roms won't give you a good performance increase.

I used stock with zaiben kernel for months, uninstalled all the useless system apps with Root Uninstaller, including hangouts, gmail, maps, youtube ... and then installed them again as normal applications and used the greenefy to hibernate most applications, never had a problem of lagg or excess heat. Now I'm testing some KK ROMs , and do the same thing using iodak kernel 9.95 and I'm liking the results.
Make a bakcup and test some KK ROMs.

Believe me, if you're using an LG phone, custom ROMs are ALWAYS better.
Stock ROM got too many bugs and I don't really like modified stock ROMs as people usually add more bloatware.
You should really give CM11 a try.Latest nightlies got very good performance with iodak 9.5 kernel.And no important bugs you should worry about.

If u use iodak or werwolf kernel wont phone heat up like crazy if u use ur phone or do some gaming especially. If u do it while phone is charging?

If you use a custom kernel like iodak or ww, you can tweak many parameters. Among them there is cpu clock frequency and voltage.
Personally, I've set the stock 1500 mhz frequency and undervolted Mpu and cpu respectively by -30 and -75 mV. My phone runs smooth as silk and never gets horribly hot.
The guys who replied before me are right, though, stock roms or their derivates cannot be compared with CM11 in terms of performance they are way better. If I were you, I would flash one of the latest nightly and a custom kernel.
After some trials and errors you will be able to find the correct balance between over/underclocking and undervolting.
That is, if you are willing of doing some experiments. If you are looking for pre-cooked solutions I am afraid you will be deceived.

Trickstermod is a favorite for most of the people.Check your tegra variant, if it's 1 or above, you can use -122mV for CPU with no problems, max freq set to 1.5 ghz
I'm using this for months now and I sometimes forget my phone can get hot, unless I do heavy gaming for 30 mins or more.
Also try to overclock GPU.Helps a lot with FPS issues.
If you want good battery life and decent performance, underclock to 1300 mhz and undervolt by -122mV (if your variant is 1 or above)
Btw you can check your variant via /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/tegravariant after installing iodak kernel.Higher the variant, the higher you can overclock/undervolt.

All phones are different you may have to tweak the values to fit your needs. Try upping the LP CPU voltage to -10 and work your way down. For MPU try -25 and work your way down on that as well.
Mine is a variant 2 and can use -20 and -110 with the 520 GPU overclock
Edit: also for more performance try changing your minfree values. Lower values mean better multitasking and high values mean more killing of background apps but more free ram for the foreground apps. I personally use 8, 12, 45, 65, 95, 165
