I just dusted off my Turbo after not using it in a while. Shortly after powering it on, I was prompted for and without thinking, installed the ota MM update. I had previously unlocked bootloader via sunshine long before this, but never rooted. Is my bl still unlocked / root still possible or am I screwed?
It's still unlocked, if it was unlocked prior to the update.

So that's what I was hoping, however I guess Im not clear as to what I need to do next to load twrp and root. I assumed all I'd need to do is pick up the official guide at section 2 in using adb / flashboot to flash twrp.img, but in trying to do so, I get an error "(bootloader) Preflash validation failed". I also noticed at the recovery mode screen it says "Device is LOCKED". Doesnt that mean the bootloader is in fact locked or is that unrelated?

@jcase, @TheSt33v, what's going on with this guy's phone? If he unlocked via Sunshine, should still be unlocked.

There is no bootloader lock command in the OTA. Myself and tons of others took the OTA with an unlocked bootloader. If the bootloader is locked after the OTA, either it was never unlocked or someone gave it the lock command using fastboot.

Depends on status code, either is wasn't unlocked or someone relocked it.
A number of ppl used mofo and has assumed they were unlocked

At the recovery screen where is said it was locked? I believe it was status code 0.

Recovery does the normally safe if locked or not.
Go check the status code, if it is 0 then it was never unlocked with sunshine

I did unlock using Sunshine... At least I really thought I did. I installed it, paid for it and ran through what I thought was the unlock process a few months ago. I didnt load twrp or root, but I didnt think that was needed before upgrading.

I relocked the bootloader but when i did , I got an error saying 'too many strings' or something
However, I restarted phone in bootloader and saw the status code (It was 2-bootloader status:Locked)
However i gave a 'oem lock' command again.
I get status 2-bootloader status:Locked, after relocking. (well thats ok) but i still see the bootloader unlocked warning.
I could Still flash the warning remover 'logo.bin' file
Now Im confused about whats happening! If my bootloader was locked then how could I get that warning? Rather , How could I ever flash a logo.bin file on my device?

It's no problem to unlock the device again. Just use the same code you received via email.
The bootloader-warning stays because even a relock does not restore warranty.
There's absolutely no reason to relock the device. As long as you are fully unrooted you will be able to install OTA even with unlocked bootloader.

You have to be unlocked for this. And just keep it unlocked. As I said, there's no point in relocking.

I was curious to know if you have unlocked your bootloader, and then locked it again via fastboot oem lock command, if you wanted to unlock the bootloader maybe in the distant future again, would you need to use the same unlock key that was given to you by moto?

I've unlocked my bootloader but have never once considered relocking it. Why would you lock it after unlocking it in the first place? I can't think of a single benefit.

I've seen some people claim they want to be as "close to stock as possible" when selling their phone. Unfortunately it doesn't really make a difference.
There are 3 states for the 2013 Moto X bootloader:
LOCKED Status:0
Unlocked Status:3
Locked Status:2
note: Status 2 is also known as relocked.
As users we can toggle it to either Status 2 or Status 3, but we can never set it back to Status 0. On Status 2 or 3, you'll get the Bootloader Unlocked warning message at reboot (where replacing the LOGO.BIN with custom one will hide the message).

The reason I wanted to re-lock it was for purposes of my phone getting stolen. I'm assuming if it was relocked, the person wouldn't get the joy of installing a custom recovery.

There is a process to re-lock which involves flashing the stock rom first, etc. and it does wipe the phone.
So if you re-lock, you'll also lose root. (at least until you unlock, flash custom recovery and root).

Yeah. I think I realized that I would need to wipe my phone again to re-lock it. I turned it back to stock so I can get the OTA which should hopefully come out soon.
I guess once they allow us to download stock 5.0.2, I'll do a re-lock then.

Well, I rooted my device and installed PAC ROM on it, then reflashed a stock image back to my nexus and relocked the bootloader, my phone is fine, no bootloops and no issues, does this pose a problem with OTA updates? Thanks! I really need to know because i would NOT wanna brick this thing! Thanks!

Thing is, when your bootloader is unlocked, the device is almost unbrickable. Also, you can be unlocked, 100% stock and still get OTA's if you want. If you have a locked bootloader, mess something up and end up in a bootloop, and can't boot to android, you're stuck.
Are you saying that OTA updates work even if your boot loader is open? Does it just check your system files and recovery? In theory, if I did an OTA update right now, and my bootloader was unlocked, it would install without problems?

Yes to all your questions.
Unlock it, its free insurance and wont change or harm a thing.
you can lock/unlock your bootloader anytime you want actually, you just have to make sure that you relock your bootloader sfter making sure that you can boot properly first. because if you can't boot, and your bootloader is locked, then you are just as good as bricked. because now, to unlock your bootloader, you have to enable allow oem unlock. and if you cant boot, you cant do that.

That said, since 5.1.1, doesn't "allow oem unlock" remain ticked / selected after a reboot now? If so, it's fine to relock it, even if it doesn't boot if that is ticked.

Well it shouldn't matter. When you tick that box, it writes the change to mmcblk0p18, which is OS independent. Now that booting the rom doesn't revert that partition, if it is ticked once, it shouldn't matter if there is an OS at all.

Correct. Bootloader status has no effect on OTA. Updated script checks boot.img (kernel), system.img, and recovery. All have to be unmodified. No root, no unencrypted kernel, stock 100%.

Scripts don't check recovery. It's just the OTA zip won't work without it.

N6 is ARM. Arm 64 is for 64 bit devices such as the N9.

A question for clarification, as long as the bootloader is already unlocked, the "OEM Unlocking - Allow the bootloader to be unlocked" setting under Developer options doesn't affect anything?

Correct.
After following the bootloader unlock instructions to the letter, the message unlock unsuccessful appeared. Now when I boot up the phone, the unlocked bootloader warning message appears, but I have not been able to get a custom recovery flashed, or achieve root. I tried restarting the unlock process over and it says bootloader is already unlocked. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am sorry, your post is not very coherent. You state that unlocking bootloader failed... however you also state that it says it is unlocked...
Could you please tell us what it is that you want? Because your bootloader is already unlocked... you can't open a door that is already open.

If that dosent work you can also follow the below procedure.
Relock your bootloader. Your phone will factory reset and boot. Then head to developer options and you will see oem unlock is not greyed out. Then just enable oem unlocking and unlock the bootloader. When you boot up again you will see that oem is greyed out but it'll be enabled. So you'll have unlocked fastboot and unlocked frp now.

Some if not all bootloaders nowadays are not "locked" by the manufacturer using a code but are usually "locked" by employing a digital signature and/or a CID (carrier Id) hard coded into the OS. When we "unlock" a bootloader with a code we are simply using a routine written into the loader by the manufacturer to now ignore signatures and/or CIDs of the OS and this allows us to flash whatever we wish.
Sometimes upon unlocking using a code the DS/CID is erased/altered and cannot be retrieved, so not a good idea to relock an altered bootloader.
At least, that is my understanding of it.

Not necessarily, I doubt if most service centres would bother delving that deep, but maybe some would.

No, but I haven't delved that deeply into Huaweis bootloaders, but I NEVER attempt to re-lock them.
