Need Custom ROM suggestions and Instructions for Xiaomi Mi 5 - Xiaomi Mi 5 Questions & Answers

I recently received a Xiaomi Mi 5 device and am unhappy with the stock MIUI (7.2.8.0 Global Stable) functionality.
My previous phone was a Moto E (1st Gen) and several years ago, I had flashed a custom ROM by @TheStrix [from this thread].
What an amazing ROM that was. It provided an optimized version of the stock ROM that fully supported the hardware and provided a great base on which to add required Apps. I used it happily for years and my son still uses it.
I am looking for a Custom ROM for the Xiaomi Mi 5 that meets the following criteria:
1. Must be stable and supported
2. Must support all device hardware fully without losing functionality (example: IR blaster, NFC, fingerprint, 4-Axis OIS, VoLTE, ...)
3. Provide as close an experience to the standard Android OS it is based on as possible (example retain the great integration of the "OK Google" functionality)
4. As few Apps pre-installed as possible without compromising (2) and (3) above. But must include Google Play Store for a smooth way to install whatever apps (Google or otherwise) are needed later.
4. Clear instructions to install the ROM starting with a stock Mi5 device, using a Linux laptop. I am in to the "open source" movement and don't own a Windows device.
I have already spent a lot of time transferring 15 GB of my data to the device, so a way to update the new ROM without losing the data is desirable, but not a must-have.
Thanks in advance for the help and suggestions. Apologies if this thread turns out to be a duplicate.

Further information from a response I received on the MIUI forum.
My ROM version says MIUI Global 7.2.8.0.0 (MAACNDB) Stable. However official ROMs don't have "CN" in the version for Global Stable ROMs. So looks like my device came with an Unofficial ROM.

Xiaomi may only provide a windows-based unlocking tool. I do not know whether it may work correctly with Wine. Qcom 9008 mode may not work but you can still flash via fastboot, and unlocking bootloader is required.
MIUI is stable and all function should work normally but it is not a AOSP-like one. Lineageos 14.1 is stable but not all functions work - QC 3.0 seldom works, touch button does not work well enough on LGD panel. I do not know how to test OIS, but it is said to work.

In your situation, the fake rom situation, you have to first unlock the bootloader and then flash a real/official miUI rom and from there ... go where you want.
remember: DO A BACKUP if you need your personal data; because this operation, done right, will erase everything from the phone.
A good place to look for informations will be here on xda and the official miUI forum

The best custom rom for mi5, in my opinion, are the RR and the AOSCP. Fast, light (in space used and ram engaged) and maintained with love and dediction.
But they have some flaws; flaws widely discussed in their respective threads (here on xda).
My suggestion: if it's the first time for you with the miUI ... Give it a try!
Because it's in fact a custom rom, with many minor (and major) things already at your disposal.

LineageOS is your ROM then.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-5/development/rom-cyanogenmod-14-1-xiaomi-mi-5-t3501971
We'll get the official gemini release tonight.

The place for the mi5 roms in xda is in the front page of the mi5 subforum; there is a section just for them full of info and goodies and pixies and unicorns and etc etc. :
mi5 subforum: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-5
RR stands for Resurrection Remix and AOSCP is also know as CypherOS
But just a couple of hours ago LineageOS has started with the nightly: https://download.lineageos.org/gemini
And yes: do a search before asking a redundant question because all the informations are already here at your disposal.

[Question] ¿The best nougat stock/debloated/light rom?

EDIT: Sorry, wrong subforum, I meant to post this on the Redmi4x / Santoni subforum.
Greetings, I think this is my first post here (sorry, I'm still practicing my english and this post may have horrible mistakes).
Currently I'm using the latest version of MIUI (9.x I think), but as much as I love this phone I've always been in love with the performance and customization... and this phone has a hell of a bloatware.
I'm aware of the latest Oreo roms and I know recently Xiaomi has released the source code for the santoni phone but still no rom is perfect, specially the Oreo ones, so I'm looking for the closest aosp/stock experience I can get with full compatibility, I think a nougat based rom will do fine but wich one?
I'm planning to install a rom, install greenify, have a good battery life, have more free space and still have full camera, gps and other compatibility with no issues.
Wich rom could you recommend me?
Thanks in advance.

Aex official Oreo or pixel experience
Mi-Globe MIUI based on the latest official or developer release. Can be customised to your needs.
Working beautifully and you can remove all the leftover MI crap with system app remover, free from the store.
None of the 3rd party ROMs have the excellent battery life as MIUI unfortunately.
Google search Loup 14.1 for santoni.
It is by noyer, father of development on santoni.
For some reason he isn't on XDA but his ROM is what you need you can follow him on github and twitter though. He even managed to port Sailfish Os for Santoni. I'm using Loup 14 with clarity kernel and experience is awesome.

correct..i thought to suggest the questioner...but you did before me. by the way, once rooted the Stock ROM? all bloat-wares from google and Mi can be removed...Battery and Phone performance everything is good.
even i tried a some recent official releases of Oreo 8.1 for R4x , first few days everything good, later Battery life tarts in consistency. so, i back to stock but removed all Google and Mi's apps ..only very few mi services still existing on my rom, if i delete them my phone gets locked and i need to do everything from scratch again, so i let them persist... Go for stable miui global 9.2 and keep remove the stock bloatwares.

Looking for a *stable* ROM

Hey guys!
I'm a very recent owner of Mi 9T Pro (less than 24h remaining until unlock becomes available). I'm also a recent consumer (if that's the right word for it) in the custom ROM scene. About a week ago I decided to check out LineageOS 16.0 on my old (Android 4.4.2) phone, and I was blown away by the performance improvement. It really gave my old device a second wind.
So when it comes to my new Mi 9T Pro, the long term strategy is almost certainly to install the official version of LineageOS 17.0 as soon as it becomes available (if at all and boy do I hope it does). However, since the official release might be (as I understand) several months away, it leaves me with a time window to use some other ROM until then. I've checked out LineageOS 16, 17, HavocOS 2.8, 3.0 & Pixel Experience ROM threads in this forum. It appears they all have some or other issues.
And this is where I was hoping to get a suggestion from you guys. What I'm interested in is the most stable ROM currently available for this phone. To be more clear, I'll illustrate what I mean by "stable":
1) Novelty not required.
It doesn't have to be Android 10 necessarily. Stability > novelty.
2) Most commonly used features take precedence.
I would certainly prefer a lag-less UI and no issues with signal reception over working NFC and Bluetooth audio (all 4 issues seem to appear with some regularity in mentioned threads).
Well, that's basically it, I hope you get the gist of it. If not I'll be glad to clarify further.
Just to be clear, I'm really not looking for a perfect solution where there is none. Just the least painful one. MIUI is not an option.
Thank you!
P.S. Sorry if this is a dup. I only managed to find a handful of outdated questions (~2 months old) which had very little engagement to begin with.
I use crDroid 5.8 (5.9 build does not work with global fw &vendor) and all the android 10 ROMs besides LOS 17 have broken NFC and BT .. And los 17 is also not perfect. Slows down after a while. We just have to wait till every K20 Pro / Mi 9T Pro version gets stable MIUI 11. Right now android 10 is not daily drive ready.
I'm using Résurrection Remix with the same build for over 2 month (the last one), and i dont have any bug.
I'm dtarting to have some troubleshootings after 2-3 weeks and it only require to restart to get fixed.
Also i'm not a big user of the phone so at the end of the day there is 70% battery left!

First of all, thank you for your input!
But what about Android 9 based ROMs like LOS16, Havoc-OS 2.8, Pixel Experience etc.? Wouldn't they be more stable based on the fact that Android 9 was already out (for quite some time) when K20 Pro was released? And also because the developers have simply had more time to iron out the issues?

I have basically tried every rom there is on this forum, and multiple vendors, roms later, i can suggest that EvolutionX, Pixel experience plus (pie are both pretty stable. But they have minor issues. Definitely daily driver material.
But! in my suggestion, if you could stick to a debloated MIUI. It would be hassle free.
Pros for using the stock rom.
Fingerprint sensor works faster
Doesn't break safetynet, so.. google pay support.
widevine L1 in other cases.
And most importantly, the camera functionality doesnt break

To be honest, I hadn't really considered debloating, but I will most certainly look into it. Are there some preferred debloating solutions out there?

Follow the steps in the Removing Bloatwares in Locked/Unlocked Bootloader part of the first post in this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/k20-pro/how-to/redmi-k20-pro-firmware-10-3-8-0-9-6-13-t3939647
True, MIUI has way faster and better fingerprint recognition than all custom roms. Sadly I hate MIUI look and feel...
If you want to give MIUI a try, install the xiaomi eu ROM, which is pretty clean and without much preinstalled stuff.
Best is not to use the custom ROMs with ALL the features, since those ROMs are more laggy and buggy.
So if custom ROMs, try android 9 based. I will flash android 10 again only after 2-3 builds which use MIUI 11 firmware and vendor, since I do have a global K20 Pro/ Mi 9T Pro and don't want to lose DRM L1 or NFC by flashing IN or CN fw and vendor. Because most android 10 ROMs require MIUI 10 android 10 fw and vendor (and there is no global MIUI 10 android 10 fw & vendor)
So depends after all, how much you hate MIUI.
I flashed a custom ROM because of the following things
clean stock UI
no gapps
better everyday performance

So.. my process is..
1- unlock bootloader
2-flash recovery (orangefox or twrp)
3- boot into revovery
4-wipe system
5- flash vendor
6- flash rom (gapps if necessary)
7- wipe cache

I'd suggest you stick to global vendor..
If it doesn't work, then try chinese..
Widevine is not an issue for me.. but you might stream HD content.. so.. look into it..
And i forgot to mention... Always format data before rebooting.. format data is different from wipe data.. keep that in mind..
You should stick to the process.. it should go flawlessly..

Disadvantages of flashing custom rom?

Hello guys, I have a brand new mi9tpro with global rom and even though it works great, i cant stand all the google and mi bloatware so i wanted to flash another rom (miui or non miui)
The question is, do i lose something if a flash a custom rom? Let's say for example some quality on the camera or stuff like that.
I come from samsung where non samsung roms had to use generic drivers and thus the camera quality was horrible in comparison, and I dont want the same happening with this phone now, so i'd only flash a non miui based rom if the quality and functionalities remain exactly the same.
Thanks in advance!

My Mi 9T Pro is now under the latest beta from xiaomi.eu. Although it may be similar to stock ROM, I have frozen 69 apps (what you refer as google and bloatware).
I have tried a few smaller custom ROMs and most gave me bootloops probably because I did not install gapps. Why would I want to leave a nicely working xiaomi.eu beta ROM for something else which requires gapps and has more bugs ?
Miui.eu miui custom rom: No downsides.
AOSP based custom rom: Less battery life, instability, worse navigation gestures, most likely bootloops if you do something wrong.
Currently I'd stick to miui.eu until our device stops getting official updates. And even a year or so after that. I am a big fan of AOSP software, but it's just not as good for our device.
This all depends on personal preference and philosophy.
Some people prefer to follow the engineering prime directive: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
You do say the device is working great, so...
The other school follows the concept of: "if it ain't broke, tweak it until it is".
and you do say you can't stand it, so maybe you belong to the second group.
Then clearly a custom rom is the only alternative you have.
Some ROMs are pretty stable and contrary to the opinion of the previous comment, users report equal or better battery life.
The only 3 real complaints I have heard about are a. the fingerprint sensor performance (and even then reports vary widely), b. lack of OTA and problems with dirty flashing, and c. no android auto support.
Camera is same or better with ANX or Gcam.
True, the fact there were 4, now 3, different firmwares and SKUs greatly hurt and slowed down development and testing for this device, and also the timing with the release of Android10,
but some official releases exist and custom ROMs are slowly getting there.
If you really can't stand google, I recommend you to check out LineageOS or SyberiaOS with MicroG.
It will take fiddling, reading online and troubleshooting, but other than time it costs you nothing.
Worst case, you can always go back to Miui.
In another thread an XDA Recognized Developer has a PC program that makes it simple to disable MIUI and Google bloatware. You might want to try that before resorting to flashing a custom ROM.
Despite what people here say I've tried MIUI.EU on previous Xiaomi phones and always found even the supposedly stable builds to be buggy.
REV OS is a much more stable MIUI based ROM. Unlike MIUI.EU the devs for REV OS extensively test every build for bugs before releasing them to users.
I loved REV OS on my MI 9 but have stuck to stock MIUI on my MI 9T Pro so far. I did do some debloating using the program I mentioned.

If you are new to Xiaomi you should read up on the bootloader unlock process which seems to drive many people crazy.
>Disadvantages of flashing custom rom?
Flashing drivers manually is a major pain in the ass for me. These days OTA from custom ROMs are seemless and automatic. Otherwise it used to be another major problem with it. Another problem might be you might brick your phone. Another major problem is that none of the custom ROMs for this device are perfect and bug free. I am only sticking with MIUI for this specific reason.

I don't think the devs of REV OS want their ROM on XDA. Many devs soured on XDA and stopped maintaining ROM threads here.
At this point most of the ROMs on XDA are either unofficial or are threads that aren't created, maintained or supported by the Devs actually responsible for the ROMs.
And part of the user agreement for most ROMs that maintain their own website is that you are forbidden from creating any external links for those ROMs.

suggestions for custom ROM´s (everday use, Cam)

Hi guys,
actually, I´m trying to bring my Mi9 back to life with a new battery. Since now, I´m on xiaomi.eu 12.5.6.
In order to keep my Mi9 updated, I tried to figure out, which Custom ROM I´d go for. Criteria are every day use (stability, battery lifetime, smoothness, security updates). Conclusion after reading the threads is that most official 11.0 ROMs do very well (for example crDroid, Havoc, …). Since twrp still doesn´t support encryption, I´d go for 11.0.
Another point is a good cam out of the box (using all lenses and features and compareable to stock quality). Or do I need to install gcam to reach this goal?
Thx in advance for suggestions, I know the question for „best ROM“ is pretty much too simple, but I´d like to get a starting point…

Question What is the most stable ROM for this phone right now?

Please recommend me a ROM to daily.
In previous phones I've enjoyed Pixel Experience, PixelPlus and am a big fan of LineageOS.
Of course, I'd prefer to keep fast-charging functionality and be on the latest android.
Thanks!
Hello.
You can try ArrowOS 12.1(Android 12).
This rom is very smooth and stable, fast charge works on it.

This has nothing to do with the stability of a custom rom, but with the hardware of your smartphone.
With every batch Xiaomi change hardware. Not every custom rom can or will follow these changes.

They are all in gcam, los and kernel threads in this forum.
Bumping this thread to ask the same question in light of new circumstances (my apologies):
I've been looking through all these threads lately to find a custom ROM for my usage before unlocking the bootloader, but recently I noticed that almost every Android 12 ROM is discontinued so the devs can work on A13 or for other reasons, so now I can't find any threads that have that in context.
In other words my question is, what is a stable enough ROM now that most are discontinued? Taking into context the spoofing no longer works in the latest ArrowOS 12.1 build which causes extreme battery drain by the Google Play Services.
If it helps, the uses/needs I basically seek are mainly Camera/Audio/Battery. I dont care for gaming one bit in my personal case.
Thank you and sorry for repeating the same question. I just want to drop MIUI and can't find an answer.

But A12 is no more updated and this will be a security reason, or not?

Please recommend me a ROM to daily.
In previous phones I've enjoyed Pixel Experience, PixelPlus and am a big fan of LineageOS.
Of course, I'd prefer to keep fast-charging functionality and be on the latest android.
Thanks!

1. PixelPlus Experience
2. Project Elixir
Very good,stable and smooth roms

If you are okay with MIUI, Hassan mirza ROMs are amazing. He has A12/12.5/13.
