Storage encryption feature missing - P8 Lite 2017 (PRA-LX1) - P8 Lite (2017) Discussion

Hi guys, a friend of mine asked me for help because he just bought a brand new P8 Lite 2017 but couldn't find the menu entry to encrypt his data (his previous phone was a samsung, he told me he could encrypt both internal and SD storage).
I gave it a look but it seems the feature is indeed missing. I know this is from a different model (P8), but just to get the idea, the "Privacy protection" and most of all "Encrypt Phone" menu entries showed HERE are missing in my friend's firmware.
S/N: pra-lx1c432b101
EMUI: 5.0
Any clues on how to help him? I'd prefer to avoid unlocking/rooting the device if possible.

Hi,
As with all new phones running Android, the P8 Lite is encrypted by default when it leaves the factory. It uses a randomly generated key until a lockscreen PIN/Password is set up, after which it uses the said PIN/Password. This is the reason that the Encrypt device option is no longer present under the Security menu.
As for SD card encryption this is currently a function that is not supported by EMUI.
Cheers

Ah! You're right, i knew this, i read it at the time it was implemented! Thanks a lot mate!

EVA-L19 C432B360 Nougat Developer Settings

Hello,
so I´ve tested last Nougat Beta (B360 v.11.12.2016) and played a little bit, with the new functions, Android Nougat brings along.
For me, one of the most interest/new functions of nougat instead of marshmallow, is the possibility to allow to force move any kind of app to sdcard (external storage).
This could/should be activated, as one option integreated into the Developer Settings Menu.
The Option is shown so far, but I can´t activate this feature.
So my question is, if this is because we´re still have a beta test & not a full official release, or is it so, because Huawei decided to block this option, like the feature to adopt storage in Marshmallow (and Nougat)?
Is there any kind of possibility to activate this feature (through terminal / adb command?) ? Like adopting storage manually in Samsung S7 etc?
Or is this for anyone having official release yet, functionable?
You're talking about adoptable storage I guess? There's an option on how to enable this on the S7 at http://www.modaco.com/news/android/heres-how-to-configure-adoptable-storage-on-your-s7-s7-edge-r1632, I guess you can always try it on the P9.
Otherwise there's an option in Settings->Memory and Storage to set the default location of any apps to either internal memory or the SD card. This was available in MM too. I have this set to SD Card but it seems to have broken ES File Explorer!
No, I talked about the Option included in Developer Settings to force allow move/install any app to sdcard

Filesystem encryption

Hello,
are you able to understand if the filesystem is encrypted?
Best regards,
If FS is encrypted, you will have to provide a password in order to boot the phone. Without that password, phone cannot read the "disk".

I am afraid this does not need to be true anymore...:
Android 7 should come with File Based encryption in contrast to the android versions before...used exactly with the same reasoning (you cannot boot otherwise).
Does anybody know more?
Just bought this phone as I expected all Android 7 phones to be encrypted....would be curious to know!
To further add information/confusion here my today's tests:
- Moving the primary storage to SD card warns me that this (external) storage is not encrypted, while the internal storage is. Indicating the phone is encrypted.
- In AIDA64 you find the Device feature android.software.file_based_encryption. Indicating that the phone CAN do that, not sure if it DOES.
- Using the app Activity Launcher, you can start the (otherwise hidden) Encryption dialog. It attempts to reboot, but does nothing. Dialog shows it as un-encrypted though...
- In Settings you can search for options. If you search for " encr..." it will find the dialog "Convert to file encryption". However clicking on it does nothing.
- I could set up my companies exchange connection. This says it requires an encrypted 'application' storage. So some parts at least should be encrypted.
Oh, I am talking about the P10 lite. But I am sure, this also helps for the P10. If the lite has encryption, the P10 clearly should have.
This other thread seems to indicate that data is indeed encrypted on these phones.

This because of force encryption in boot.img it can be disabled by flashing a zip which removes dm-varity and force encryption from boot.img

how Direct Boot under nougat?

I've got a US T813 that updated to Nougat last week. I'm interested in turning on the Nougat Direct Boot / file based encryption option. But when I look through the settings, all I can find is Encrypt SD Card and Secure Startup, both under Lock Screen and Security. The description of Secure Startup sounds like the older full encryption since nothing will operate after a boot until the password/pattern is entered. And the is no choice under Developer options to turn on file encryption.
How do I turn on direct Boott?

How to? 7.0 Stock ROM Kernel with Mass Storage Gadget & FUSE support

Hi all,
my Huawei P9 is running Android 7.0 (EMUI 5.0.1) rooted.
As "Build" is shown "NRD90M test-keys", but as this doesn't correspond to any of what I have seen as valid build numbers so far, I guess this is wrong and somehow related to the Nandroid backup restore I did after upgrading this phone from Android 6 to 7... Anyway, my question is this:
What's the best option for me now to make this phone mass storage mode compatible?
The USB Mass Storage Enabler app claims that the current kernel does not support Mass Storage Gadget & FUSE and thus the app won't function.
So it seems that I need a new kernel.
- Is there a kernel available that I can use to simply substitute my current kernel?
- Can / should I easily compile my own one? (I have done that 15 years ago with Linux kernels, since then no kernel compilation experience anymore). If so, where do I start?
- Do I have to use a custom ROM? Which one do you recommend for that feature to work and for a lightweight system with high performance, flashable without muhc hassles from my current status?
Thanks a lot!
i think you updated to a beta firmware,
this thread may help,
good luck
Du you mean, a non-beta will contain the necessary kernel options?

not sure, but some had similar issues with the nougat beta.
[Post deleted] - sorry, didn't find a delete button, so just deleted the content.
On another P9 with Android 7.0 / EMUI 5.0.1 (Build-Nr EVA-L09C432B394) the USB Mass Storage Enabler app also doesn't work for the same reason.
So I think that beta (if it really is one - the Nandroid backup title of the system with build number shown above has the same string in its directory name - maybe when restoring the Nandroid backup, that string is written into the "Build" field?) is NOT the reason for the mode not working.
Anyone here who uses that app and has USB storage mode support on a (rooted) stock Android 7.0 / EMUI 5.0.1 on a P9?
The app says (Google Play) that it works only on "selected" Samsung and Sony devices (btw, it"s rated only 3.5)
I just tried (Magic zRainbow v3 which is based on v394 and rooted Magisk), it says it doesn't find the lun file and not compatible with the kernel. IMO, it can't work here (I don"t know would it work with AOSP firmwares instead of stock).
Btw if you really restored TWRP backup from MM (EMUI 4.1) to N (EMUI 5), you are lucky that you didn't (soft) brick the phone
The app worked very well on my older P9... so it's not really limited to "selected Samsung and Sony devices".
I didn't get a notice about missing LUN file, but kernel incompatibility message was shown here, too. However, as far as I know the kernel can be replaced easily by flashing a new kernel? Question is then only, how to get my hands on a compatible kernel. Compile my own one? I have never done this with Android.
Or is there any other method to enable mass storage mode for the microSD card, so I can sync my stuff easily with the Mac on a daily schedule without having to remove the card from the phone everytime?
I tried other (e.g. MTP-based) sync solutions, but they all fail badly (either crash or take ages) when keeping those about 2.000.000 small JPEG files in sync that I need on the phone's microSD card. Those files are virtual tours / gigapixel image tiles, that I host on the phone to be able to present those virtual tours to clients without carrying a computer with me).

*!$hock!!!* no private space ??

There is no private space setting on my honor 9 lite phone...pleas tell me is this feature particularly not given on.this device or what? ? (*any other device with emui 8.0 has this feature on them)
quote: If you have your default storage set to SD card, it will not show up. Default storage has to be set to internal
Sorry to say that there is no private space even though default storage is set as internal.
?
But why this feature is not coming can u plz tell...cuz I checked other honor device with emui 8.0 and they have this feature... Does this phone never had this feature or its just mine...n if it wasn't there then is there any plan by honor to provide this feature to honor9 lite in any future update...
