Speakerphone (loudness, clarity) - HTC U Ultra Real Life Review

Proper etiquette aside (hint: don't use speakerphone while doing your "business" in a public bathroom), rate this thread to express how you think the HTC U Ultra's speakerphone performs. A higher rating indicates that you love it: it's loud and it's clear.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

USonic headphone :good: ; Speak is loud
The USoic headphones are really good. Bass is strong. If the ear scan feature is activited, some noise is then introduced as the result of the algorithm trying to balance the sound when you play quiet music like piano ones, but the feature can be turned off easily through notification screen.
The speaker, however, does not produce strong bass at all. But sound is clear, and no cracking even at max volumn. Max volumn is also really high on the speaker. A lot of times the ringtone gives me heart attacks when it is on my computer desk.
It is dual speaker, as in the one you use for phone and bottom firing speaker can both produce sound. However, unlike M9 or previous dual speakers, it is not entirely stereo, and the impression it gives me is that they seems to cover different part of frequency range.
In short, other than the lack of bass for the speaker, I absolutely have no other complains about the sound part of this U Ultra.

totally agree with @Frofire
Envoyé de mon TF700T en utilisant Tapatalk

The speaker has enough bass when boomsound is set to music mode. In the default theater mode, I agree that it has almost no bass. I prefer music mode to theater mode. With my HTC 10 I always prefered the theater mode, so I guess HTC changed something in the configuration for the HTC U Ultra.
Actually I wanted to start a new thread and ask what is your preference. Do you use theater mode or music mode?

No, the Ultra is better. Even better is the U11+ though.

Kaiser/Tilt Speakerphone Quality

Just wanted to see what others thought about the speakerphone. I find mine to sound not very good when turned up all the way. It is not extremely loud, and has some breakup to it.
Curious how others feel.
Thanks.
hi there..
Well I find kaiser's speaker quality awful. It needs a lot more bass, and hopefully that's a software issue. It starts crackling and distorting the sound when it's all the way up. They could have put a better speaker, it's a business phone and speakerphone is an important feature.

That speaker cant hold a candle to the Stereo Speakers found in the MDA. That's one of my biggest gripes between the two.
Anything played at full volume through it sounds pretty bad. I keep the volume down a bit on all apps to make it sound a little better.
I am going to play around with the HTC audio manager application a bit, they have some presets like "Low Treble" or "Low Bass" that will maybe clear things up a bit.

Speaker quality

I received my O2 Ignito (their version of the Diamond) yesterday and am generally impressed, even with the stock ROM. However, despite hearing that the speaker volume was a little low I wasn't prepared for how bad mine is. I have upgraded from a Moto V3i and the lowest setting on the Moto is louder and clearer that the highest setting on the Ignito. When I listen closely as I adjust the volume using the keys on the side the sound is distorted at all levels and the 80% level is louder than the 100%, which seems to clip.
Are they all this bad or do some lucky ones have well-performing speakers with decent volume and a clean sound?
Well, my speaker is working just perfect. Clear sound, and i usally use it at 40-60%. Otherwise its too loud for me. But thats subjective. I know there are some sound comparison videos on Youtube. Maybe u check them out to see if you have a bad speaker.
IMO, the Diamond's speaker system is its weakest point. It has about the worst audio quality that I have encountered with any phone. My Diamond comes with 1.93 ROM and I have used the Schaps Adv Config tweaks. Sound level is still low and quality remains awful. Maybe I am missing something?
My speaker is low too. It also distorts slightly. I wouldn't say it bothers me though...
my speaker is low too .. actually as low as the Se w880i ... sincerly i cant use the speaker, i miss that from my touch
Same for me - speaker to low. All patches I've applied have not changed anything on the internal-speaker volume.
4 out of 5 replies to say the speaker volume is too low. Not looking good. Are we all deaf or are those that are happy with their speaker not bothering to reply? There are plenty of people that are happy with their Diamond so is that despite the poor speaker volume in most cases?
It seems to me that in developing an all-singing, all-dancing handset HTC have forgotten that it is also a phone and you can't answer the phone if you can't hear it ring
I have to say my ringtone volume is quite loud and mp3 playback is also quite loud, the only problem i have with the sound is the lack of bass and a little bit of distortion on the highest volume setting.
Same here - I am happy with the speaker/ringtone volume - distortion on the highest level is a problem.
My complaint would be the loud speaker during a call. It's almost non-existent and not useable - at all.
I also find the loudspeaker a little quite, but after the mod I read here about putting a small bit of clear tape over the speaker and put the back cover back on, it made big improvement to the sound quality and for me was a little louder
Indigo speaker level
I have had my Indigo from o2 for just over a couple of weeks, overall ringtone volume is ok, & volume during a call also exceptable although not as loud as my previous XDA Orbit. When on hands free the volume level is low, when used hands free in car callers are hardly audible, i have tomtom 6 installed and the volume level from the speaker then is fantastic, i can even lower it from the highest level, this suggests to be that there must be a registry tweak that can be applied as the speaker can produce a good volume level with third party software. Does anyone know of an edit to increase the speaker volume level when in hands free mode?
o2 XDA INDIGO
Rom 1.93.206.3WWE 8/7/08
Radio 1.00.25.05
Protocol 52.29.25.12H
Third party sofware ontop of o2 standard fare;
Tomtom6
Advanced config Manager
Total Commander ce
Stopwatch
Ariel battery
1-Calc Lite
Well, _all_ phones will produce distortion at highest level, the companies don´t care. They want it that way... High volume, lowprice speakers.
The ringtone/message alert volumes are fine and quite loud but on the MP3 player its very low, which is a disappointment as I dont want to always have to use headphones to listen to songs.
I do find the speaker poor.
I often don't hear the SMS alert, and it's not easy to listen to a call in a noisy place. My previous XDA Orbit was much better.
Is there a "fix", or do we just live with it?
There is a fix somewhere on here.

You should possibly check to see if your Audio Booster settings is switched on (you will find this in the Programs menu). Please note that your headset will be needed when trying to enable or disable the Equalizer. When disabled the sound is vastly improved.

quality is just poor. volume is low but ok IMHO
Take a look at this:

I have the U.S. version of Diamond and I find the earpiece speaker to be very good. I've had quite a few phones to compare to. External speaker is a different story though.

X1 has 3 Speakers !??

Hey Guys
I found out something interesting. I downloaded this freeware audio routing software for using the earpiece for sip softwares like skype which normally send their autput audio through the loudspeaker and not the normal speaker for calls.
http://www.teksoftco.com/storage/download.php?product=audioroute_ppc
now the interesting thing is that this software has 3 possible speaker choices
one is the internal the other the external and speakerphone that when is activated u hear music from xperia in a greeat quality and really high volume. It sound like stereo speakers. I am really wondering how many speakers has xperia? and why normally the music doesnt come out like this but in a very low quality. ???
suggestions welcome

Most likely two...the ear piece speaker and the speaker phone speaker.
I don't think there's an internal speaker like on the Ipod Nano.
so, your'e saying that you found a way to enhance the inside speaker??
Cool !
For as far as i heard, there is a mono speaker built in, and there where plans to make it stereo..
I just gave this a try, it does produce sound from the ear piece speaker on one of the settings and while it is a much better quality sound it is far too quiet to make a difference or to listen to, you actually need to put the phone to your ear to hear it.
Shame, I was hoping it would flesh out the poor sounding loudspeaker
This guy didn't find 3 speakers.

I also had my xperia taken apart and couldn't see any other speakers. you can't always trust a software. if its programmed to say there are three speakers it will say there are three. also you have to look with which phones it is compatible

ok now try this
leave a song playing and from the software change from earpiece to speaker phone (The order is VERY important) so first put the audio to play in ur earpiece(first icon) then put it into the speakerphone (last icon) and u will hear a very loud music in a good quality. then if u change to the second icon u will hear the normal very low quality.
there is a huuuge difference

Ok, will give it a try later, so in theory it will be playing from both the ear piece and the loudspeaker, with the ear piece giving it a bit more oomph.
Will this work with the ring tone too???
This could be the final piece of the puzzle to make my Xperia perfect
Not true.

Ok that does it ...
The first thing when i get home is to make a video and upload it on youtube ... till later
this app is very bad...can't shut it down, speaker on and stuck there.
edit: okay, to shut it down you have to press the first icon and the little bar below is for moving it around.
the last icon did play with both speakers on. there is no 3rd speaker. first icon for the earpiece, second icon for speakerphone, and last icon for both. IT DOESN'T MAKE A BIG DIFF. Can you hear the earpiece loud? NO...

Strange ... for me it does ... but u have to pass from the earpiece (first icon) to the last icon ... and another icon will appear telling that speakerphone is ON and during this time the music is really much louder and in a much better quality.
like i said...the last icon is playing with both earpiece and speaker on. that's it.
Would the incall volume of the ear piece speaker make a difference...mind is set to the lowest so maybe when the sound is played through the ear piece that's why it's quiet.
What incall volume are you guys phones set too
carefull, you can burst your earpiece speaker with this.

hmm actually i dont think so ... because the higher volume doesnt come from the earpiece but from the normal output sound... only that is amplified and much better quality

Agreed, but there are only two speakers. Earpiece and mono loudspeaker.
The HTC Touch Pro2 has 3 speakers.
actually im thinking there might be three ... the one which is mono might have 2 speakers inside one low quality for music and ringtones and another good quality for loudspeaker during calls ... and is activated only when using loudspeaker during a call ... (u will see the same icon and notification that speakerphone is active)
but i really like the sound ... is like my laptop

I really don't know how you want people to answer your question.
It depends on:
opinion
music
mods
head/earphones
And more

not really
i was just asking whether it was louder than the z1c
well I cant compare it to a z1c but I can compare it to a 5s and Nexus 5. The internal speakers are louder than the 5s and Nexus 5. The headphone jack output is terrible. It is by far the quietest I have ever heard. I must have the volume on my stereo up over 1/2 before it can even be heard. With the Nexus it was bad but not this bad, the 5s was great. It would only need to be at 1/4 for comfortable listening. This is easily 1/3 as loud as the iphone was.
Bluetooth audio out will blow the speakers if the volume is not adjusted down after using the headphone jack.
I can compare to the Galaxy S5 I had before. Unfortunately the in call headset is much lower in volume, I have to push it to almost max to hear someone loud enough when I am outside, compared to the S5 when I only kept it at around 50-75% mark.
Also, during calls, only the bottom speaker activates when you want to talk hands free which is a bummer. They should activate both via firmware update.
i have Z1C and wonder too if z3C is louder, my loudest phone what i had was Motorola Defy+ )

Couldn't believe it when I read the above, but yes, tested it and it's true. I mean, is there any reason why only the lower speaker activates? Sony, please enable both, we want to be fully able to use the phone in hands-free mode!
Besides that, to me, the volume of the earpiece counts most for everyday situations. And this is where the Z3C really shines. Never had a phone such loud and clear.
I must admit I've thought I was on speaker phone when I get calls, the earpiece speaker is really loud and clear.

There must be something wrong with my phone because the incall volume is sooooo low.
in call volume is fine, although i have it permanently at 100%. speakerphone is really quite quiet, especially when compared to Samsung phones. must be something that can be tweaked with root, or via official Sony update, as notifications, ringtones, music, etc. are quite decent volume.
headphone volume isn't spectacular (again, Samsung seems to amp this more), but really it's fine.

Does the top and bottom speaker sound different to you?

Hello! I noticed the bottom speaker sounds a bit louder than the top one, specially with higher frequencies. Is this specific to my unit or is this due do a difference between the speakers in this phone? Anyone can relate?

Be aware that stereo signals might affect your perception of them. Try turning on mono audio in accessibility settings.
As far as physical differences go, they are indeed different in size. You can see it here:
?t=6m1s
After 2 weeks of owning this phone, I just noticed it now. Bottom speaker does sound louder than a top speaker. So disappointed to find out that both speakers aren't equal I bought this phone mainly for front stereo speakers.
I think Top speaker is an earphone doubling as speaker. Bottom speaker is a dedicated speaker.
I noticed something strange. After turned off the phone for a few minutes and then turn it back on, now both speakers sound balanced just like when i just got the phone and had not noticed this issue until now. Please try turning off the phone, not restart.

Software problem
Not hardware
Speakers hardware are great
I hope Asus releases updates that allows user to adjust the balance of stereo. I think it's also the stereo frequencies in each content. some music, video, and games are noticeably louder on bottom speaker, and some are louder on top speaker.
I just turn on mono audio when the speakers are in use. The stereo separation doesn't work well enough for me, and it just sounds fuller.
I'm also aware that the phone has 2 vibration motors, but I noticed the vibration is much stronger at the bottom, anyone noticed this?

I can definitely relate to this. But overall, I'm very satisfied with the quality of the speakers.
Do y'all have your bottom speaker blown out or distorted?
guys Ive owned several stereo phones before and almost all of them sound differently, you just need to turn on Mono audio as other's have mentioned too.
this phone has great speakers, reminds me of my HTC 820 boomsound speaker which were pretty loud back in the day, but this is loud and clear!
Bottom Speaker sounds louder
@Mike845 Thanks for posting this issue as I am also facing the same issue. I am skeptical as this being a hardware issue because I saw jerryrigeverything's video on YouTube and top speaker is indeed smaller than the bottom one.
I want to know that are the top bottom speaker should be of same intensity or is there a problem with my unit. Also if buttom speakers are loud than top one and there is no issue then I am very angry with Asus as one of the reason for buying this phone was dual front firing stereo speakers.
For all the other folks, I request you to check your device for this issue(balance) using this link youtu.be/2ZrWHtvSog4 . Here you'll get perfect idea if speakers are balanced or not.
Please help me so that I know that if this is an issue.

Yes at high volume bottom speaker does sound distorted.
Tweak for balancing speaker audio
Okay, first of all switch off and reboot (not restart) your phone.
Then go to AudioWizard, switch to normal mode if not already then don't exceed the volume beyond 10 notch. Now check, speakers would be balanced and clear.
It becomes unbalanced only after 10 notches where only bottom speakers volume gets increased and not top. Also beyond 10 there could be distortion in bottom speaker.
Hope it helps.
Also in Asus ROG Phone III
It is on Asus Rog Phone 3 too, very disappointed. With black crush issue.

I don't know how YouTubers are saying that Rog has got the best display ever, paid reviews probably. These YouTubers are taking people for granted.
Asus's image processing is just ****, black crush, red tint and what not.
I don't know why I went with this when OnePlus 7 pro was equally priced. Regretting my decision.
