What's the future of CyanogenMod and LineageOS for our P9 Lite? - Huawei P9 Lite Guides, News, & Discussion

So as many of you probably noticed, Meticulus the maintainer of CM13 and Lineage OS 14.1 for our devices decided to put all further updates behind a paywall which violates XDA rules according to the mod KennyG123 in this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/huawei-p9lite/help/thank-community-t3569063
Archived version in case it gets removed: http://web.archive.org/web/20170307...m/huawei-p9lite/help/thank-community-t3569063
It would be great if we could have a civil discussion and resolve these issues soon so that development and updates can continue smoothly.
Thanks for your attention.

This thread will only extend the drama. The future development plan is simple: donate to him so you get into the train... If you don't like that idea, the RR build is pretty stable and if you clean flash it you won't face any problems...
Nice and easy.

This thread is going to be closed, it is only going to cause problems.
Any discussion that needs to be had regarding all this is between moderators and people who break the rules.
As for those who want to develop CM/Lineage, the source is available.

Either way there is already a lineage release. This has absolutely no improvements from what is already released. Nor is considered original development as one Los is already released and maintained for this device.....

Forking and Developing Magisk

Back in May when topjohnwu joined Google, he was told he's not allowed to maintain Magisk anymore:
https://imgur.com/ozGMFbU
. For some reason, this information wasn't broadcasted widely.
Because of this, the Magisk GitHub has gone dry: https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/
Today, I can root my OnePlus 8 running LineageOS 18.1 (or Android 11 in general) with Magisk and pass SafetyNet. Maybe we'll have some root with Android 12. But come Android 13, or even 12 if something changes, what will we do if Magisk isn't maintained?
I propose we fork Magisk and continue developing it from there. This thread exists mainly as a discussion about a possible fork.
Sadly, I don't know much about Android development myself. I've only gone as far as making a flashable ZIP (if even that) for a Moto Z2 Force Sprint APN fix back in 2018. Well, maybe it's time for me to learn (Full disclaimer: I am a FreeBSD committer/developer, more packaging work but some kernel/driver stuff also, but then Android is based off Linux not BSD).
To mods: Sorry for making another thread. I wanted to edit the title of my previous thread, but couldn't.

Question [Request] Building a certain ROM

Firstly, I Apologize in advance. I know this might sound ungrateful to those who have already built so many cutom roms for this device. But let me ask those whoever read this nonetheless.
Some of you might know Paranoid Android or better known as AOSPA. I think this ROM deserve more love for our device, with how much love developers put behind this project. Not to mention the history behind it. It doesn't mean other roms are bad or something. I've been searching for the latest build but only found the abandoned one. I don't have the knowledge or the gear to build one.
So I ask you, kindly who might read this and have the required knowledge. Would you mind take your time and check the sources of said rom? If it tickles your fancy, I would be grateful if you could build it as well. By the way, the ROM is based on CAF.
These are the sources of said ROM

Current ROMs for Moto G5S Plus as of July 2022

Hey everyone,
It seems very unfortunate but the Moto G5S Plus age is advancing as lots of developers have been dropping support for it.
Most ROMs i've found are now with development or builds halted (unmaintained, deprecated or discontinued) for the G5S Plus, or even in some cases, ROM was abandoned all together.
This can be seen on this forum where i've marked 12 different ROMs/topics as such.
The ones found here: https://theandroidlab.com/best-custom-roms-for-moto-g5s-plus/
Are as well in the same state (most have been posted in this forum).
Here's what I have found to be the most updated:
Magus OS 1.1 - last build June 2022

Thanks for cleaning up and posting links to the few remaining ROMs in active development.
You may wish to correct the Arrow info; latest stable build was late June.
It is indeed sad that so many contributors have left the G5S+ building. Maybe this makes diehard fans appreciate the few remaining even more, especially since the phone still works great.
My sense is that this phone's owners would like to have some of the old favorites, such as crD or RR, but given the entire situation, we're grateful for any ROMs available!
never put a custom rom on my smartphone was first time I put tried the crdroid already talked about is good more manage to install it gets in infinite loop on my g5s plus sanders only manage to install arrowos hopefully leave some day 12.1 for sanders if someone update it of course

This thread is SO IMPORTANT !
We must unite to show Sanders is still worth developing.

I'm here steady and strong with my Sanders, looking forward to using Android 12
Thank you for this thread. I hope developers will keep Sanders going. After seeing this thread I flashed my first custom ROM ever--the Arrow 11 release. Seems to be working well, and as a bonus, it allows me to use ATT networks, which had been impossible to use with the 3G shutdown. I was going to use the newest update, but it seems that kniffte had problems with it.

Still going strong even after getting slammed by a car door. Obviously not my daily but would be interested if any 12/13 releases saw the light of day.

Hey,
true, but at least I keep using it. And the problem I'm facing is related to one specific app (the Munich local transport company's) - anything else works (okok, camera is blocked at lot).

Btw. I just updated my build to the August 2022 security updates. The September 2022 updates have been integrated now also, but I won't have time to build it the first round before Monday (Wiesn, you know?).
Hey there,
ArrowOS released a new OFFICIAL version, providing the September 2022 updates and some changes to Safenet and service providers: https://arrowos.net/
You can also update to my today's version including the October 2022 updates. Safenet and service provider changes will be included in the next release in November: https://arrowos-download.de/
Enjoy.

There aren't any downloads for sanders with the october patch? Is the official version still supported (security patches)?

Hi,
Have you tried formatting all the things from TWRP main menu?
If not do that once. I also had the same issue and I resetted all the things from TWRP menu and it worked.
And Now i am running andorid 12.1 on my moto g5s plus (Sanders)
Thanks.

Question Why are there so few official custom roms on this highly sold model?

I don't understand
Have you looked at the Telegram group? A lot of development seems to bypass xda these days. That slightly worries me as the ROMs are all unofficial and I'm always worried what might get added - surprising we don't get ROM based malware more often. At least here reputation is long term so that seems less of a risk.

Yes, I'm up to date on telegram, that's why I ask, they are all unofficial custom roms or ports and I don't understand why no dev team works on official roms

I wish I knew - staying on MIUI until there's something official, ideally crDroid, Lineage or similar long term projects.
To avoid any errors of judgement:
Official ROM maintainers are not supposed to make changes to the source. So, they are not likely to fix any bug which is related to the source. Meanwhile, unofficial ROM maintainers are not having any restrictions. They are free to make any changes to the source to suit their needs. So, the unofficial maintainers often fix source-related bugs before the official one.

That's how I understand it, and having that level of code review in the official builds is what almost guarantees you can trust a ROM with your banking etc. I haven't actually heard of any unofficial ROM being naughty, but there's nothing to stop it.

For having used with several devices, several official or unofficial roms over several years, I have never had a problem with banking apps (for those who support them, of course).
Note that when there are no more brand updates, the developers are obliged to modify the source to continue to develop the rom.
XDA is a trustworthy source, for others I don't know.
And following that explanation...why are there other low-priced xiaomi models and also old models that have many official roms here on xda? I am very concerned that we have many unofficial aosp roms on telegram and here on xda absolutely none. Why do the devs of this model never publish on xda and other xiaomi models do? That doesn't give me confidence and I still don't understand
