Is OnePlus 3T worth paying 60% more over the Zuk Z2 Pro? - Lenovo Zuk Z2 Pro Questions & Answers

I'm debating between the 128 GB versions of both phones (comparison table) and don't see why the OnePlus 3T should cost that much more. The only disadvantages I see in the Zuk are the lack of NFC (don't need) and having only one (multi-purpose) button instead of three. Anything else I'm missing?

OnePlus is officially updated by several custom rom developers while Zuk Z2 Pro is mostly dependent on few voluntary developers. Oxygen OS is more customisable than ZUI OS.

Thanks, but is there any reason to go for the OnePlus if I intend to stay with the stock ROM?

Do you want custom roms? Do you want a phone from dead company?
Enviado desde mi ZUK Z2121 mediante Tapatalk

Not interested in custom roms.
As for dead company, I'm currently in China for a few days and want to buy a phone. In any case I won't be able to use the warranty if something goes wrong - be it Zuk or OnePlus. Also , it seems there's a shortage of OnePlus 3T 128 GB, so that pretty much makes the decision for me. Zuk it is (unless there's something really bad about this phone that I need to be aware of).

Coming from Oneplus 3 & 3T I can't see the justification of paying the extra £200 more for them.
With Lineage CM13 using the same apps on the Z2 pro I don't notice any difference in performance. The lack of development could be an issue but in my case if a ROM works why change it?
If the next Oneplus uses a better display & Xposed for Nought comes out I might consider another Oneplus.

Is there any disadvantage to installing CM13? Coming from a Note Edge, I'm not impressed with ZUI, at least not after having the phone for a few hours.

The problem with most roms is the lack of source code available. Maybe that rom is good or maybe is plenty of malware... Who knows. Furthermore, no publishing the source code violates the GPL, but who cares, right? ?

I didn't know manufacturers were obliged to release source codes.
As regards malware I use Xprivacy and apart from contacts I do not have any other personal information on the device. Also I was under the impression CM based ROMs with the latest security patch which is currently 1 April 2017 was safer then stock.

Its up to you what to do or don't with your phone, but check rom threads from 3t or zuk z1 for example. What is the point of hidding the source?
If you check GPL rules you will know what code must be publish by manufacturers or anyone and which parts don't.

I don't know what the decision of this friend will be but as a ZUK Z2 Pro user, my next phone will be Xiaomi Mi6. That is pretty sure, consider it.

Custom roms possible?

Hi there,
at the moment I‘m a little bit torn between selling or keeping my Zuk Z2 Pro, because I have a few issues with some apps in combination with the Safe Center, that I‘m not sure will be resolved in the near future. Also it seems to be really silent around the device regarding the community. Especially the last point makes me a little nervous, but I don‘t know how long it usually takes from the release till there is a community.
But what I really want to know, is, if it is possible to create Custom Roms at this point in time with the unlocked bootloader, or if there is still something missing. (are the kernel sources necessary? How possible is it, that Zuk is going to release them?)
Thanks for your help!
Best regards
Tek
Okay. You said exactly the same as my opinion. I love the device but the OS is crap. I'll wait some more time.
XIAOMI will release some new phones on the end of July...

Q. Is it possible? A. Yes.
Q. Is it possible without sources, which we don't currently have? A. Yes. But it will be difficult, and given that it appears Lenovo have no plans to launch the device or make it available to distributors outside of SE Asia, any development will almost certainly be in the Chinese / Taiwanese community - which is slightly impenetrable for most of the rest of the world.
Q. Didn't Lenovo publish all the sources for the ZUK Z1? A. Yes they did. Available here. http://developer.zuk.com
Q. Won't they do that again for the ZUK Z2? A. Doubtful, in my view. ZUK Z1 was launched internationally, but in rather disjointed fashion which led to poor sales, and the farce over CyanogenOS updates (lack of). They'd viewed it as their boutique international brand to compete with OnePlus & Xiaomi, and particularly in European / Asian markets where the Motorola & Lenovo brands are weak. I'd be pretty amazed if http://developer.zuk.com isn't left to die.
If I'm wrong and they publish sources, then I guess there'll almost certainly be quite a bit of development, as I'd guess the Z2 & Pro will eventually make it to India - the only non-Chinese market where they're still making a big push for the Z1.
It's a shame, as the ZUK Z2 Pro and Z2 are much better propositions than the Z1, and would likely sell very well if launched worldwide.

Perhaps it's not so hopeless ...
Looking at the official ZUK forums / bbs, if I'm right ZUK are looking at either supporting or providing 'official' versions of popular ROMs for the Z2 Pro and Z2.
http://bbs.zuk.cn/z2/t117651/
People ask on this thread and others when sources will be available to 3rd parties, and there's still no answer though ...
Still, this has to be good news.

Wow, thanks for this extensive answer!
But how is all of this different to, let‘s say, the Xiaomi Mi5? Afaik this one you can also buy only by importing it, but it has many Roms available.
Your addition seems much more hopeful and I hope that it will happen in the near future!

Is it worth it?

So I'm about to change my OPO and I have 2 candidates: OP3 or Z2 Pro.
I'm wondering if the Z2 Pro, in your opinion, will have the same development in the future.
My biggest concern is having a choice if I don't like the stock one.
Do you think CM or other ROMS (Slim, PA, etc) will come for Z2? Or should I just go for the OP3 (which i didn't yet because of high demand 5 weeks shiptime and the camera which seems better on Z2 despite having less MP)?
We have to wait and see how development will be in future. There are some people working in it but nobody knows how it gonna end. Hardware side both units are so close. But OP3 is much better developed and maintained.

Yea, I know. That's why I'm so in doubt. Owning an OPO I know all the development effort put in that phone. Unfortunately there are no other options that I know of with snap 820/6gb ram and between 5/5,5". Even the new Mi5S will be 5.7" in the plus version so that's a no go for me. Same for the LeEco and the Zenphone 3 deluxe.
So my only choices at the moment are getting an OP3 and wait 5 weeks for delivery or take the Z2 pro and hope there will be some development.
God, it's so hard to choose.
Any owner of the Z2 pro can tell me how the stock roms is working? Any bugs? It's a stable phone?

Used ZUI Chinese Rom (Languages only English or Chinese) for awhile before switching to Unofficial CM13. Everything was working fine in ZUI, just didn't really like the UI and everything looks IOS-like, so i changed over to CM13.
Unofficial CM13 is very stable, only noticed two bugs which aren't really major:
-Vibration is not working
-Facebook videos not playing back properly (Not sure if it's an issue on facebook's side or CM13's side)

Vibration for me is not so minor issue. But apart from that, I'm afraid that all the developing can stop out of nowhere (or even worse, never begin) for this phone. Where can I find the CM dev thread?
The phone is awesome,
I am using stock rom with Nova launcher.
Nameless rom is now being developed if that is your kind of thing, I and others have donated to get support for this so I think it should be good, just need to wait for the launch.

The nonplus version has only 64gb rom, dunno about ram (will see tomorrow). Also xiaomi phones don't have the lte band 20 support (800mhz) used in europe (this is a must for me). Add to this the fact that you are pretty much left with MIUI (xiaomi phones don't have much developing). A xiaomi phone isn't more worth than an op3 or z2 in the end. The only thing I like is the double camera, but we have to see how it performs yet.
Also I already own 2 xiaomis and they have some annoying bugs, so I'm more inclined toward something else.
But we will see once they are announced tomorrow.

Android 8 "Oreo" coming to Z2 Pro? (officially/unofficially)

I mean, why not? There is no technical limitation.

You can be 100% sure we'll get it unofficially. We have official support from AEX, I presume in 1-2 months fist Oreo builds will be here, and we have mokee official support too.
I doubt about official release but we may see it in December/January.

Until now there should be no technical limitations.
Developers of z2_plus got boot successfully Android 8 with few things broken. The changes between z2_plus and z2_pro are few.
So if z2_plus gets it, they have more devs, it is very likely that we will have it.
Thanks cosmedd, that would be a great thing! Maybe LineageOS 15?

yep, davide has a test branch for lineage-15.0 [1] but don't worry, as fas as I know, he still working on AEX.
It would be easier if CAF relase an Oreo kernel [2] for msm8996 but there is already custom kernels for Android 8 and our device. [3]

Custom Rom development!?!?

Hi peeps, I am new here so if you think my post is lame or goes against the standard of the group or rules, please let me know! I have noticed that xiaomi released the redmi note 4 in january, kernel got released at march and so did lineage os for the phone(it's an estimation and random facts from the internet). All i am saying is doesn't the mi max 2 have enough love to get attention from the developers? I know they have so much work and other devices to maintain but all users like myself at least wants to hear something like a word from the respected developers like from lineage or RR that "yes there is a development undergoing". That's all we want to hear, not just unofficial builds being made. :'(

but porting won't be as good as having it on our mi max 2 directly right? Like there is a question of optimization as well considering its a ported functionality. What most of us want is direct love for our baby. All we want is to see the light of hope of development.

im talking about ported project treble, not ported rom. big difference.
there will never be direct project treble support, unless xiaomi decides to include it in their official oreo update for mi max 2.
otherwise, treble functionality can be ported from note 4 (due to similar hardware and system partitions), thus enabling the mi max 2 to run pure aosp roms without the need to backwards engineer or port any oem / vendor specific drivers or firmware parts.
tl:dr - ported project treble is not equivalent to ported rom. it makes direct development of custom roms for mi max 2 way easier!

Any Thoughts On The Direction Of Future ROMS/DEvelopment, etc...?

Hello All!
Well like everyone, I want a nice phone, but of course being the Geek that I am, I love to hack and tinker on phones.
I've been really researching and reading around online, still in search of that Modders Dream phone, and will all the choices out there, it's just not easy figuring out, at least I'm still looking. Problem is, all the latest cool phones that have recently come out in 2018, like anything, development will take time.
So I'm trying to figure out which phone(s) might be a good choice to go with. As some may of read, OnePlus donated some 6 phones for free to XDA developers, that certainly made that phone look promising for the future, but the cost of the 6 is a little over my budget.
So, with all this said, I currently have a Mi A1, and the development seems like it's been really good on that phone, which makes me think that Xiaomi phones seem to be popular with development, at least I hope the Mi 8 will have just as much development going on as the Mi A1, or better.
What does the future hold for this phone, any thoughts on this?
Hmm
Thanks

I'm patient, that's not the problem, I guess it's to early to tell how the development will be. I assumed if the Mi A1 was as good as it is, then this should be better, but that's a cheaper phone, easier for people to get, therefore more development, more expensive phone, less people can afford, less development...

Honestly, I think the best "tinker" phone right now is the Oneplus 5t. Solid hardware and a very big selection of roms and mods. Xiaomi phones tends to be good also, but you need to wait a year or two before it really picks up.

there was an instant of Mi8SE kernel source was released for 2 months+, but there wasn't any development for custom ROM so far.
Of coz it might really means the establishment for this phone wasn't wide enough and the population wasn't there, due to the price. These contributed to late or lack of ROM development.
It also could due to there are many new development in the android world such as Android Treble and Android Pie which is more fun and trendy for the moment.
So, the wait will really had to be a bit longer then usual.
But what is the usual?
That will be the primary question now.

Yes. I'm aware we are talking about Mi 8 which running on SD 845.
What I referencing is Mi8SE had not had any development even they had the kernel source released 2 months before.
However, I wish I'm wrong on this and had custom ROM development as soon as the kernel source released.
Time will tell...

I wanted one essential phone for a long time, but I need dual sim and don't really want to bother with bluetooth adapters so skipped that one. Have a OP6 and MI8 now. Like the MI8 more but a bit bummed I can't get custom recovery to work flashed so have to fastboot the recovery each time there is an update.
We have to wait for the kernel source from the Mi8 to get the best experience out of custom roms.
We got treble, but not everything is working well with Treble roms.
Hope Xiaomi will release the source shortly
