Hi,
One of my friends told me not to do OTAs beta updates because it could bootloop my phone.
Last update I flashed the zip and all worked perfectly fine, but I had to re-root my phone and re-uninstall annoying stock apps with titanium backup.
Now I have a question :
Is it really risked to do the update with an OTA download ?
I really don't want to re-root my phone and do all the other stuff that comes with it.
I guess there is a way to do a safe update which keeps my data with the OTA but I need a confirmation about that.

If you have all stock, then I can't tell if doing the OTA update will re-stock my phone too
I always have stock phones, because early time when i tried root, unlock btl, install twrp, change rom... sometimes there were wrong things, examle booting only logo and phone make a stone looks like, also custom roms has some bugs and on stock i am sure that everything works good. I do not understan why people starting root, change roms or etc. Use stock always and everything will be ok

To answer OP, yes you can struck in bootloop.
Remember it's beta version and not stable release.

I have gone through the rooting for dummies guide, but as my intentions are slightly different can anyone help me by briefly writing down the steps for Rooting and Keeping Stock Rom and keeping Stock Recovery so that I can update it when google releases 2.2.

You shouldn't have any problems updating to 2.2 if you flash amon's recovery.
Which recovery you have has no bearing; so long as you're rooted, you'll be able to download 2.2 and flash it. If your goal is to make the transition from 2.1 to stock 2.2 as easy as possible then, sure, stay with stock. I figure CM will probably have a 2.2 ROM out faster than most stock phones would have been able to download it via OTA, though, so I'm sticking with CM5.0.6 and will update whenever CM does.

I am using Enom. With Titanium backup it really doesn't mean much to switch roms
My understanding is that once you install a custom recovery you can not get ota. They show up as available and are clickable but fail. This was the experience described at the last ota. Are you folks that are saying you can still get ota after installing a recovery speaking from experience? In other words did you have a custom recovery installed and sucssesfully update at the last ota?

with custom ROMs and custom recoverys, you will not be able to install OTAs. Most custom ROMs disable OTAs since they kinda break the custom ROM functionality like root access. Most OTAs reboot the phone into recovery to update the software. A custom recovery like Amon RAs recovery can only accept ROMs and updates signed with test keys. Any update released by Google/HTC which is officially signed will not work.
But this should not prevent anyone from installing custom ROMs and recoverys since most cooks include the latest updates very soon, sometimes even before the official releases...

I would imagine if you followed that you would be back to a completely stock phone that would work with OTA updates.
But, if you don't plan on running any custom roms, why bother unlocking the boot loader at all? If you haven't already done it, I wouldn't.

Nor will the stock recovery work since it loses its official signature when it gets ripped so the ota cant use it because it requires an officially signed recovery to install itself with. If this is incorrect then I look forward to being properly schooled. I can say that I have yet to find anyone that had a custom recovery on at the ota last time that was able to get the update and install it ota.

Well that's great news. I regret unlocking my phone more every day.
To be honest this is pretty much a non issue as far as ota goes. The stock rom with the ota on it, or in other words the lastest official release, will be available to download here within hours of its release and you can flash it like any other rom. If they do a rolling release it may well be you can download it before it becomes available over the air.

The reason I want to unlock the boot loader is to only use the metamorph and a few other launchers. I am a theme-freak so I could customize the look of the stock rom, but now that you all mention it, I guess I will stick with the Stock find other ways to theme it.

After flashing CM's ROM, I was able to completely restore my phone to shipping state (sans relocked bootloader, of course), and then perform the 2.1-update1 OTA.
So yes, you will be able to update to 2.2 as soon as Google releases the OTA, but you'll have to completely revert back to stock in order to do it?
I'm not really sure about what I'm talking about, but I just wanted to confirm that you CAN perform OTA updates even after flashing a custom recovery image/ROM.

Stock Rooted OTA 4.08.605.15 710RD rom. It is rooted, zip aligned, has busybox and comes in odexed or deodexed versions. Other than that it is untouched. Enjoy

Correct, i think. It is probably safest to wipe everything, but might be able to be flashed over wildstangs rom.

I'm gonna wipe everything. I've experienced 1 too many bootloops and hicupps specially with cyanogenmod. My Dinc just never seems to like those Roms

I literally flashed over wildstang83 Rom . I'm gonna attempt another try but wipe the cache and delvik 1st. Wiping everything didn't do anything. I'll report back soon

I was actually surprised and excited to see this update this morning but thought it would be ICS.
Long ago I rooted my phone just for gaining control and removing bloatware but ended up flashing my first rom with WildStang's Gingerbread OTA. After that I applied the "Warm" theme and been happy with that thinking there would be no more updates to this phone.
To the point - my question for you all is what do you mean by flash over? When the OTA is pushed is it just a patch or do they somehow send and entire install which removes the previous version, saves your data, installs the new version, and puts back your data? I don't have a problem with wiping and starting fresh, and it sounds like that is what everyone is recommending, I'm just trying to understand how it would even work flashing "over" my current version.
Nobody has replied to my post and I have not seen anyone report a trouble free install here so I'm gonna sit on the fence for a while

Flash over is just how it sounds. Literally flash on top of your current rom without wiping your data out.

Well my QUESTION is this:
What are the procedures to installing this and can I just reflash the ICS ROM I was on before.
The only updates with this push seem to be SMS and Bluetooth, is it even worth it?

I performed a data/factory reset, cleared the cache partition as well as did a dalvik wipe but after installing it gets stuck on the white Incredible screen. Any ideas? Perhaps my kernal/radio? I honestly lost track of what kernal and radio I have so I am not sure.
So what's up with this ROM, I flashed like 3 times And it boots up.....then it starts a random reboot and just bootloops continuously. Is there any fix?

So guy - you put this out here and it seems like everyone is having problems. How about some feedback. I'm getting ready to sell this phone in two weeks and want it to be on the current version but I'm not touching this ROM until I hear it freakin works. There are always a few people with issues but I'm not hearing anyone saying "flashed it and running with no problems". Appreciate the effort to get this out there but if your gonna take the time follow through on your commitment.
So I finally got me a sweet deal and got a second hand XT1053.
Unlocked its bootloader, then flashed T-Mobile´s 4.4.3 and finally the OTA to 4.4.4, because here in Mexico all I was able to get was 4.4.2.
Now, I want to try custom ROMs, and Ive been reading about the procedure.
As any sane person would, I want a nandroid backup before messing around. Im guessing flashing TWRP will take care of this, like it did with my LG L9, right?
Is it wise to do this on the verge of Android L being ported to our Moto X?
How difficult is it to get the phone to a fully stock state (minus the bootlader, of course)? As far as I know, I only need to flash my nandroid backup then flash the stock recovery. Is it as simple as that?
I read somewhere that flashing custom ROMs messed up with Motorola´s active display/voice control, and I assumed they meant that custom ROMs lacked these features because of their proprietary nature. Am I correct? Or does some kind of unrepairable damage will forever afflict these features, even if I get back to stock?
And lastly, what ROM do you recommend? I´d like the active display feature if possible, guess I can do without it. CM theme chooser would be nice too.

You are right about everything you've mentioned. Good research done for sure! ?
Do a backup with twrp. And yes, you can restore it and flash the stock recovery and you're good for the OTA.
Aosp/cm roms don't have the Moto features. But yes, you can return to stock and have them again. There's a few stick based custom roms that of course still have the features. The other roms, unless something changed, do come with some bugs unfortunately as well.
Most use stock, with gravity box for customizing.
And in case you missed it.... Never try to downgrade from 4.4.4....or you risk your device bricking. You can flash lower version custom roms, cause they won't try to change the bootloader. But don't downgrade stock firmware. Ever. ?

Until there's a 4.4.4 SBF, yes. That's the safest bet.

SBF.Droid-Developers.org hasn't been updated in a while, at least as far as the X (2013 or 1st Gen edition) Roms.
Another possible source is -> http://www.filefactory.com/folder/dd05c058d3ff8dbe/?sort=created&order=DESC&show=100&page=1 however, they don't have a 4.4.4 SBF for the XT1053 either.
And you can keep an eye on https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/recovery-images since Moto should post the 4.4.4 SBF for the Developer Editions. Eventually an XT1053 (GSM) and an XT1060(VZW) 4.4.4 should pop up there, whenever Moto finally gets around to it.

same phone, problems loading roms
I have the same phone, I also recently got second hand.
Moto x xt1053 (gsm) carrier unlocked, currently in kitkat4.4.2, running Kangakat 2 rom (came with it), unlocked bootloader, rooted and using SuperSU, newest version of twrp like 2.8 or something like that.
I want to load a custom rom but am having problems, downloaded P.A.C. and AOKP (two i have tried to use) for the device msm8960 using there stable versions not the nightlies. Went into twrp, created backup, factory wiped, flashed rom and g-apps, was "successful" no errors but on reboot of phone it gets stuck in boot loop and won't start up. for the P.A.C i was able to get into twrp and reflash my back up, for the AOKP twrp kept getting stuck on that teamwin image and i could only finally access it by having the usb cable plugged into my computer. I am not a noob, but definately not an expert.
So did you have any luck flashing a new rom to your phone? Does anyone have any advice for me? I really would like to try some different roms.

I hate Tapatalk for all the time spent writing a quick reply and its gone.
Anyways, first of all, make sure you have the latest recovery available, I remember back with my old phone, funky installations happened if you weren't on the latest recovery. I recommend philz one, has support for some pesky partitions that sometimes get messed and other recoveries won't back up.
Now, in my particular case, I first upgraded my 4.4.2 Nextel stock to 4.4.3 T-Mobile stock using RSDLite, then took the OTA to 4.4.4, and until then I figured I'd play with ROMs. Have had no issues other than something I've addressed on another thread and I ultimately fixed.
My suggestion is going back to full stock then doing everything yourself so you know what's actually going on.
You'll have to flash a custom recovery and then root it again but with an unlocked bootloader that's ezpz.
Remember never to downgrade (that is, flashing a lower android version than what you currently run) stock official images (such as the ones from sbf-developers) because you WILL brick your phone. People say you can downgrade when flashing custom ROMs but I wouldn't risk it, and I don't really see why I'd want that.
Double check whatever file you'll try to flash, always use stuff intended for your model, and when that's not possible verify if other users with your model have reported it works for them. As per the version thing, I believe the most recent development unified models under the GHOST parameter but take my words for what they are, that is, my view on things, you should always make one for yourself.
Ask if you don't completely understand a step BEFORE doing it, there's good people willing to help you out.

So I have an older version of Viper ROM on 4.4.2, and I want to latest version of Viper ROM. From my understanding, it works better when you have 4.4.3, so I need to upgrade to that first. So, what do I need to do? Revert to stock, update OTA, and then re-root, get TWRP again, and then reflash to the new version of Viper ROM? I really hope that's wrong, but I don't even care what I have to do if I can just get a clear understanding of what it is I need to do.
I'm pretty annoyed that Viper ROM offers no support when it comes to updating, but when you search elsewhere on xda for this information it's very hard to find. I've installed custom firmware on phones about 5 times in the past 5 or so years, and I've never come close to having such a hard time at finding basic instructions. Every time aside from the first I haven't been able to fully remember the process, but had no issues like I'm having now when it comes to finding guides.

I rooted and unlocked my HTC Desire 510 (Cricket) ages ago and I have an update for security patches which I cannot run because my phone just keeps rebooting into TWRP recovery and therefore does not install the latest update. I heard you have to flash the phone back to stock ROM but I'm not sure how to go about doing that. I am willing to restore my phone back to 100% stock if anyone knows how I can do that.

IMO.... Update isn't worth the time involved needed to install it. Installed on my wife's totally out of the box stock 510....esy,but couldn't really see a difference. Left my rooted nonsense ROM alone. It's been quite a while now and haven't noticed a difference. Your call, that's just my two cents worth

I ended up finding someones stock recovery image dump around here after doing some searching and it worked out fine. The only reason I ever actually rooted my device was to use Helium to do full backups of my phone such as Apps and App Data.
