HTC Desire 10 Pro Root help - HTC Desire 10 Questions & Answers

Hi I just have bought my new HTC desire 10 pro and I wanted to root it using ADB and fastboot to flash TWRP recovery and then install SuperSU like i did with older phones. With this one when I try to flash TWRP with fastboot tool it says to me:
writing 'recovery'...
FAILED (remote: download for partition 'recovery' is not allowed)
Now... I have tried OEM unlocking enabled or not and i can see it working in bootloader (**LOCKED** or **UNLOCKED**)
I read somewhere that HTC has the download mode for flashing, but when is in that mode nor adb nor fastboot can detect the device plugged in.
This has something to do with S-ON and S-OFF? I understood that is a kind of NAND memory protection.
If you have a simpler way with some exploit or working apk is also accepted because I only want root and dont care of flashing custom ROMs for now.
Thanks,
Joe

S-On or S-Off doesnt matter for what you need to do.
First go to HTCDev website and unlock your bootloader, the phone model isn't shown but select "other supported models".
Then install device drivers and ADB fastboot
Dowload TWRP 3.1 for your variant from here and flash it by fastboot
twrp-3.1.1-0-a56dj_pro_uhl.img
twrp-3.1.1-0-a56dj_pro_dugl.img (dual sim)
Download SuperSU and flash it using TWRP.
I think your problem is either bootloader not unlocked or drivers missing, anyway good luck ! :good:
Credit to @sabpprook for the TWRP variants

You need to boot the phone to download mode and then flash the twrp...adb reboot download should do it, then the usual fastboot command to flash twrp..Bootloader needs to be unlocked via htcdev first

The provided links for twrp are not working. Can you please provide the link for twrp for HTC desire 10 pro

I did not build those twrp files, I just found them on another post by @sabpprook
The links are now expired, you'll have to ask @sabpprook to post them again please.
But I found another twrp file for the HTC Desire 10 Pro dual sim version by @jemmini

Problem with HBOOT 1.16.0000

Hi,
I used the procedure here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14693680) to root and install CWM v4.0.1.4 on my Incredible S and while I was trying to flash a custom ROM onto my phone during CWM recovery, I kind of screwed up by wiping everything and not doing Backup.. I've been trying to find the Stock ROM for my phone to at least resume normal phone usage but I have been unable to find any. I've tried installing a lot of Custom ROMs including Cyanogen mod 7.1, Virtuous Quattro rc3, BinDroid RUNMED2.5, RCMix.Energized 2.21, etc, etc but nothing works. I desperately need advice as my phone is super important for my work :\
Please advise!
Btw here's my HBOOT message:

My phone was on Android 2.3.4 and it was on HTC Sense 2.1..
Unlocked bootloader from htcdev.com? Need to know your region/carrier/cid.
Possible fix could be flashing boot.img from custom rom.zip in fastboot.
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img

I'm not sure how to find out my region. I bought this phone 2nd-hand so I'm not sure about the specific details. I have the box and it says it's made in Taiwan. Do I provide the IMEI, S/N or P/N?
Sorry but what's a boot.img? :|

EDIT:
I tried copying the boot.img from Cyanogen Mod 7.1.0 (File name: update-cm-7.1.0-RC1-IncS-signed) into C:/, then I typed "fastboot flash boot boot.img" into cmd after I 'cd' into C:/
Message:
C:\Android>fastboot flash boot boot.img
< waiting for device >
sending 'boot' (2178 KB)... OKAY [ 0.770s]
writing 'boot'... OKAY [ 0.598s]
finished. total time: 1.369s
Rebooting does nothing..
So I wiped (data/cache/Dalvik cache) and flashed the CM7.1.0 mod and now it works!! Amazing.. I spent 8 hours working previously and nothing worked. I shall try it on my real desired ROM later.
THANKS A LOT!

Ok so if you were able to follow the procedure you quoted to install CWM, then you have adb and fastboot installed on your PC, so reboot the phone into FASTBOOT USB mode and then enter the following command and then post the results:
fastboot getvar all
Also was your HBOOT 1.16 S-Off or simply UNLOCKED before you flashed CWM?

Hi! Thanks for your input. Somehow the CM7.1.0 Mod was successfully flashed after I flashed the boot.img. No idea why though.. I am still on S-ON though, unlocked via HTCdev yeap..
Btw since I'm on the topic of custom ROMs on HBOOT 1.16.0000 with S-ON yet flashable, is it safe to say I can use the other ROMs that are available out there?

Yes, but you will have to manually flash the boot.img file from each custom ROM's zip file with the unlocked bootloader.

it was while i tried to flash via the toolkit. was an error message came up, (can't remember what it said)
i just need to find a way to get s-off while my phone has nothing on it. theres no recovery (option is there though!)
i have bootloader/fastboot access. read somewhere that i have to relock the bootloader to flash an ruu. but others say i need s-off and the bootloader doesn't matter. its getting quite frustrating lol

HTC ONE Dual rom unsuccessfulupdate

I Have my HTC ONE m7 Dual Sim rom updated about 6 month ago.
1) Unlocked
2) S-Off with moonshine
3) ClockWork 3.0.3.x installed
4) MaximusHD 2 rom installed http://llabtoofer.com/2014/03/24/htc-one-dualsim-maximushd-2-0-0/
Recently I decided to update to MaximusHD 3 http://llabtoofer.com/2014/07/31/htc-one-dualsim-maximushd-3-0-0/
After using ClockWork to install the rom I've got an error 'set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed` and the OS wont load. http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...et-set-metadata-recursive-some-changes-failed
As they said I need to update ClockWork to the recent version so I followed that video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wg6B659PBnk to update ClockWork with CVM script. But it won't work for me...
Then I spend a lot of time trying to install drivers on Windows 8.1 (I did it 6 month ago on my old Windows 7 PC but didn't have that any more... ) I didn't make drivers work on Windows 8.1.
So then finally I boot to MAC and install everything by following this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0MyTvgfO7s
After I install ClockWork via flashboot I've got very scary screen (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2973598&stc=1&d=1413487336)
Then after few seconds mobile trying to boot ClockWork (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2973599&stc=1&d=1413487336) and gets in to infinity loop (->boot OS->Boot ClockWork->) Only I can do is manually boot to bootloader by pressing "power button+vol down".
What would you suggest for me in such situation?
Currently I will be trying to install stock rom from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2617159 using this article http://marrkdaviid.com/2013/11/retu...re-on-the-htc-one-dual-sim-802w/#.VD_36itgnEA it is only what I think I can do.
What do you think?
p.s
adb not working on Mac only I've got flashboot to work....

Try TWRP 2.8.0.2, I can not find an update to CWM for your phone.
On the MaximusHD site did you flash the firmware? I could not find the instructions but I would think you would need to flash the firmware first then the ROM especially since the ROM is based on that version.
There is a RUU.zip for your phone: PN07IMG_M7C_DUG_K44_SENSE60_MR_HTCCN_CHS_CU_5.15.1 402.3_Radio_1237.28.34.0106_release_373024_signed_ 2.zip. You will have to scroll down the site to find it but it is there and the RUU just prior to this version. RUU will normally reset your phone to stock but you will retain S-OFF and you don't have to lock the bootloader to run it, at least, that is the case for single SIM phones.
ADB will work in the boot OS with USB Debugging enabled or in Recovery. It will not work if the phone is in FASTBOOT USB.

Currently downloading the latest RUU that you mentioned.
Then I will unlock bootloader but then I might get an issue because I wont be able to use http://moonshine.io/ because ADB wont work on FASTBOOT USB that is required to install moonshine. Would ClockWork run without moonshine S-OFF?

If you have been doing everything with moonshine S-OFF, then leave it. Run the RUU and you should be back where you want to be.

I guess I don't understand.
Why don't you unlock your bootloader using the HTCDev Method? It doesn't require adb.
Does moonshine S-OFF have some command in ADB to unlock your bootloader?
It is obvious that I don't know your phone but here is a [GUIDE] HTC Dual Sim 802w, 802t, 802d S-Off, Recovery, Updates 4.2.2, ROOT, Google that explains a lot of the issues.
Now I am getting error when trying to install latest RUU Firmware

Why latest RUU failing?
UPDATE:
Bascally I reinstall correct latest ClockWork recovery and then I successfully Installed MaximusHD 3 rom.
Thank you everyone for help.

ROOT HTC DESIRE 10 PRO DUAL version Taiwan firmware 2.22.709.2

hello to all the brothers and sisters.
today I managed to root 100% of my HTC DESIRE 10 PRO DUAL.
I confirm that you work, tested personally.
I list the procedures in brief to do (for those with a minimum of familiarity)
1. disconnect the bootloader ...... HTCDEV select last item (all other devices)
2. install the recovery mod (TWRP) with adb - PC
3. Make backup nadroid TWRP your phone.
4. Install the Magisk-v17.1.zip file on TWPR ---------DOWNLOAD here
enjoy the 100% FUCTION ROOT
Have you found Oreo ROMs? That can be used, mine is HTC d10i (10 Pro Desire Dual SIM), is yours the same. I cannot find any ROMs for this phone.
Cheers Mark

I am not a newbie, but I only do ROOT once every few years!
I got the same phone [taiwan OS 2.22.709.2] and cannot flash TWRP, I keep getting:
FAILED (remote: download for partition 'recovery' is not allowed writing 'recovery'
Note: when I bootload, I see it is unlocked - so HTC unlock went OK - but I see S-ON - should it be S-OFF?
If so, how do I S-OFF ?
It might just be that.
I always managed to ROOT phone except a M8s - do not know why and left it alone.
Thanks
M
Stuck, same as M8s last year!
Anyone?
Managed to Flash TWRP
Also managed to put SuperSu and Magisk in internal memory
When running fastboot reboot recovery - nothing happens ... waiting for device ...
I checked with adb devices and it is detected [only one]
Note: at normal boot still see Orange State, it still is S-ON Unlocked !
We've GOT DONE with this phone, because it does not use Qualcom !
We've GOT DONE with this phone, because it does not use Qualcom !
i.e. no Custom ROM, that I could find yet.
Although I am still trying to find a page where someone seems to have flashed Pixel 2 in it !
Really?

hey iam SEXA
i used to install TWRP succcessfully by following command on adb fastboot in Htc Desire10 pro
dont worry about what inside of zip file name.you just type file file name what ever it live in
firstly put the file by copying in adb fastboot folder.which you wanna flash then
Effective1: fastboot oem rebootRUU
FINALL command -fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
1000% workable. i become succcessful after about 1 year.

Help with OP7P only Fastboot accessible

Hi all, hope you're doing fine.
I came here looking for help since I seem to have bricked my One Plus 7 Pro.
I was root user with unlocked bootloader and installed OOS 11 OTA through OonePlus' updater app, then tried to flash magisk using it's same app but since I'm a little bit un-updated about how it works and couldn't get it to flash I went into recovery just to find out the stock recovery.
Confused I wipped out ADB and tried flashing TWRP. I now know that my problem was not using the correct version of TWRP for A11 but during the attept at flashing TWRP something went wrong (I remeber doing something with the partition where I flashed the recovery.img but cant precise what, was late in the night) and the phone doesn't boot up to OS or recovery, I can just get into fastboot mode.
I can access fastboot and the bootloader is still marked as unlocked. I started reading how to install a clean image of OOS11 form this state and found this guide: LINK
I went all the way up to having the filles from the .bin unpacked and when I try to flash one by one the archives I get the error:
Sending 'aop_a' (200 KB) OKAY [ 0.012s]
Writing 'aop_a' FAILED (remote: 'Flashing is not allowed for Critical Partitions
')

Click to collapse
But when trying "Fastboot flashing unlock" or "fastboot flashing unlock_critical" I get the message saying that it failed since the device is alredy unlocked
FAILED (remote: ' Device already : unlocked!')
fastboot: error: Command failed

I've also tried to use one of those "flash all .bat" roms I saw here on the forums but that didn't work, I'm also trying to use the MSNtool but to be quite frank the tutorials I've found so far are not noob friendly, since I can't seem to get the correct drivers isntalled and the phone properly recognized ( as it is now it shows as "QUSB_BULK_CID:0404_SN:36EDE735" ).
So that's my current state:
I can enter fastboot with suppousedly unlocked bootloader but cant seem to flash things
Can't seem to get the support files/drivers for the MSN method
I would greatly apprciate help getting back into ANY version of OOS working since as it is now the phone's paperweight. If directed to comprehensible guides I beieve I can keep going, I don't mind with wich method.
Thanks in advance and please excuse the inconveniences,
LUCAS
PS: Mod please feel free to move this thread to a more appropiate board if you think I didn't choose the right one
I feel you, i hate the MSMTool. I won't use it unless i absolutely HAVE TO.
Download Mauronofrios All in one tool. You can find that here on xda.
As long as you are able to get into fastboot, that tool will help you.
Good luck
