I am N1 newbie but not Android newbie - have been using rooted Droid Incredible as my "main" phone for several months.
I just purchased officially unlocked N1 that is currently activated on prepaid T-Mobile account in USA and in future it will be used on my vacation in Europe.
Phone came with OS v. 2.2
I read a lot and things are sure different for N1 comparing to DInc. For DInc there was just one OS update and just one way to root it. For N1 its almost too much of a good thing for someone who hasn't followed it until now - 3 or 4 official OS updates and gazillion ways to root .
At this time I would like to root the phone (definitely, so that I can use third-party apps that require root access) and upgrade OS (possibly). I am not planning to use custom ROMs at this time but would like to try them in the future if rollback to stock ROM is possible.
As I already mentioned - my phone currently uses OS 2.2 and when I checked for an update via phone menu no updates were found. I was connected to internet at the time.
Questions:
1) From what I read some of the official ROMs between 2.2 and 2.3.4 (latest version) had problems. Are these versions even worth considering now that 2.3.4 is out?
2) Are there any known issues in 2.3.4 that are not present in 2.2?
3) What are advantages of going from 2.2 to 2.3.4?
4) Can I upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3.4 directly? All guides I found usually describe 2.2->2.2.1 etc - that is ROMs are updated consequently as they were released.
5) Should I a) update ROM to the latest and then root or b) first root 2.2 and then update ROM?
6) What are advantages of rooting with unlocking bootloader as opposed to rooting without unlocking bootloader?

I read the WIKI and searched and it is still unclear.
1. 2.3.4 is the only version that currently has a fix for the recently found security hole that affects every version of Android other than 2.3.4. But this only affects non-https logins over an open wifi network, and people have to be scanning it.
2. I think the only major issue (depending on who you talk to) is the 2-3 second delay when you first answer a call before your microphone works. It has never really been a bother to me, and doesn't seem to affect everyone (maybe some just take longer to talk after they swipe, IDK).
3. There are a lot. Bugfixes, better UI, faster, support for video calling with GTalk (although obviously, only the back camera works, but you can still receive fine).
4. Almost, you can upgrade directly to 2.3.3. I don't think I have enough posts to add links, but a quick google search of "nexus one full gingerbread update" (without quotes) showed some results and the second one for me is how to manually update to Gingerbread. From there, you have to root the phone, because there are no hacks known to root 2.3.4 yet. This is where it gets a bit tricky because flashing a new update will kill your root. There are a number of guides on xda which can walk you through this part, because it is pretty detailed.
5. Kinda touched on with the above. Don't wait until you get to 2.3.4 until you root.
6. An unlocked bootloader makes things a lot easier. You can actually root your phone if it is running 2.3.4, because this allows you to load a custom recovery, which will give you access to the system partition of your phone. From there, you can add the files needed for root and remove the ones that will replace the recovery. The only benefit to keeping your bootloader unlocked is that it will keep its warranty through HTC, although HTC has been really good about replacing defective phones even if the bootloader is unlocked.

I've been trying to root my phone for a while, I've done it before: both my S II and S III were international variants, and rooting those devices was very simple. But after getting an S IV from America and consensually downloading a samsung issued update -- I had yet to read up on the disadvantages of knox -- my rooting and android experience took a turn for the worse.
Long story short -- I know developers are a proud bunch who value their time -- I tried rooting my phone yesterday after almost smashing my phone on a coffee table. They say it's a well known side effect of Touchwiz, but I'll leave that to you.
I used a towelroot.com root -- a wonderful tool, if I may say so. After that, I visited the CM website and picked out the compatible CM11. I never got to flashing it though, as my problems arose while installing a recovery.
I had downloaded an app, a something recovery or another. They had an option to flash recoveries on there--it would download your recovery for you and do all the work, which seemed plausible as most video tutorials demonstrated. To my astonishment, doing so bricked my phone.
I tracked back, looked for the samsung stock rom, downloaded all 2.2 gb's of it and flashed it. It worked. My phone was functional but I suspect something within it stinks. My device, apparently for security reasons, wont let my wifi or 4g to establish a connection. It's making it impossible for me to fix this problem as I can't root my device or flash a custom rom.

If you know how I could fix the internet issue on the MK2 one, and provide some simple instructions of how to root it, I'd be grateful too.
If you think neither would work, and have something else in mind, Im open to your suggestions.

Two things:
1. You're posting in the wrong forum, this is the forum for the S4 Active i537, a different phone than the regular S4 i337.
2. The i337 had a locked bootloader that cannot be unlocked. Therefore it is impossible to install a custom recovery other than SafeStrap and it is impossible to install ROMs that are not TouchWiz-based ROMs.

i want to root to enable the multi user option by updating the build.prop file, i've been able to connect with ADB but the device isn't visible in windows or mac (tried both) when you reboot into boot loader, in fact it doesn't appear to boot into boot loader it just seems to power off (when using ADB reboot command or choosing boot loader from the recovery menu) so i wonder if its locked out somehow??
Need it too. Did anyone find a way to root B1-850?

I too just purchased a B1-850 tablet, but I've figured out how to root it. Really quite simple. Just use Kingroot:
1.) Navigate to https://kingroot.net/ from your tablet
2.) Download the APK for android
3.) Install said APK (this requires you to have allowed installation from unkown sources in the "Security" panel of the settings menu)
4.) Load up the app and follow its instructions
5.) Reboot and try it out
For good measure, I would also unlock the "Developer Options" panel and allow USB debugging (adb access) and such; I did this before proceeding. You'll have to search for instructions on that yourself, its well documented.
This all worked for me this morning! Really looking forward to unlocking the potential of this cheapy tablet.
Kingroot worked first try, just swap their super user program with supersu. I am having trouble installing the xposed framework though if anyone has any tips.
I was able to root, now I need to install a custom recovery. CWM says this model is not in the supported list. Has anyone been able to install a recovery? I need NANDROID backup functionality.
I made a thread walking you through how to do it on this tablet in the guides area but just use flash fire for recovery and xposed install
Did the B1-850 hardware updated in anyway? I was able to root it in June 2016, but after a screen repair and factory reset and fresh rom from acer, king root and all others can't work. I'm stuck without any root options. Any idea?

There was recently new firmware released for this tablet (08/24/16, Build #: AV0L0.RV09RC04.WW.GEN1), and a handful of updates (08/25/16, 08/26/16) from Acer. I have this same tablet, and I'm unable to root after flashing to the firmware released on the 24th, and latest firmware (Build #: AV0L0.RV0BRC02.WW.GEN1) as well. Hopefully someone can find a fix, as the few different methods I've attempted simply will not work with the latest firmware from Acer.
On KingRoot Please click submit search if enough people do they will find a root until then just hold tight.

I have done this a bunch, sadly still no love. It's annoying me not being able to root a relatively cheaper tablet, as these tend to get rooted first since they get in more people's hands faster. Oh well, just have to have patience.
Thanks, I was having problems, two different rooters failed and I wondered if it was the recent software update! The image version on my B1-850 is the same as you have quoted! Please post if you find a solution, some apps that need deleting are annoying.

I no its a little late but i rooted mine with the kingoroot one click root apk. Ive installed xposed framework and customized like crazy everything from fonts to boot animation. Cant find a custom recovery tho.

Acer B1-850. Is this device even rootable?
This device has made an idiot of me. If I can be of any assistance finding a root exploit for this device let me know. I will gladly write a detailed procedure of the process. I made the mistake of assuming since it was an entry level, inexpensive device, the path to root would be simple. Three months later none of the common "one-click" programs has found an exploit. I have a copy of stock rom for recovery so testing is not a problem for me. It's a matter of pride at this point. So much so I found one on sale for $60 and bought it just for this purpose. I have followed every link I can find associated with this device to a dead end. Any help will be appreciated.

Same here, still no root for me. Usually these cheapo tablets are not as locked down.

I have given up getting assistance from xda on this device. Its as political here as anywhere else. I don't drive a Samsung so nobody wants to help with root. I've heard every excuse from locked bootloader (unlockable in dev options) to what one dev actually told me,"There's little interest in spending energy on an inexpensive device." I understand, but why misrepresent the site by implying all android devices are treated the same? Hell on the Iconia One 8 thread, it says that the B1-850 does not have a MTK SoC, but instead has an Intel Atom chip. Then they send you to another thread where, of course, there is no B1-850 listed! That's because it uses a MTK8163 SoC. In both tablets.

I just got Galaxy S8 verizon - G950USQU4CRE9 (it was a free gift from Verizon for their mistake) and I wanted to root it, but it seems that OEM unlock is missing in the developer menu, I have tried many things, not luck, so I thought I would ask you guys. IS there any chance to root it, or downgrade it to 7 and then root it?

For future reference, when you are looking for how to root a specific device, the best thing to try is to do a Google search for:
"How to root (your specific model number)"
In your case it would be:
"How to root S8 SM G950U"
If you had done a search using your model number, you would have easily found this:

Remember, when you have a question about a certain device or if you want to know how to do something on a certain model number, it is always best to use the device's specific model number in your search terms along with the thing you're looking for or along with what you want to do to the device.

I am afraid to use the method described in the link because I have not unlocked the bootloader and I am not sure if that would work without it and if it will not brick the phone.
So, is the version irrelevant when looking for the root option? It is good enough to look just for G950US instead of G950USQU4CRE9? I know I have many questions, but I am just starting the path you already walked on.

Usually, the model number in device settings or the model number behind battery should be enough, what you posted looks like the baseband or build number, there shouldn't be a need for the baseband or the build number unless there is more than one android version available for the device that are different from each other. In this case, the baseband or build number might make a difference if the method to root is different for each baseband/build number.
For example, some Samsung devices that use CF-autoroot have more than one android version/baseband/build number available, for some of these devices, the version of CF-autoroot is different, you can't use the CF-autoroot that is built to work with "this" version/baseband/build number on "that" version/baseband/build number.
If you're in doubt, check which version/baseband/build number that the CF-autoroot for your model number is built to work with, if it's different than the version/baseband/build number that is currently installed on your device, you can't use it.
Now, as for the OEM unlock option. Try disconnecting from mobile data and Wifi then remove your SIM card, then disable the telephone app on your device, then reboot the device, then check settings to see if you have the OEM unlock option.

If you can't unlock the bootloader then your only chance is if one of the universal android apps for rooting android devices or one of the universal PC programs for rooting android devices just happens to work on your model.
Do some searches for:
"PC tools to root any android device"
Or
"Universal rooting apps for android"
There are many different android apps and PC programs for rooting android devices, try any and all android apps or PC programs designed for rooting that you can possibly find, maybe you'll get lucky.

I guess I need to wait for OEM unlock option to appear on my phone, without it I can not do anything, Root genius was pretty close to 87% and then I got message that the phone is too solid to root

Actually, I'm very familiar with CF autoroot.
I hate to break it to you but there are more than a few devices that can flash CF autoroot even though they have a LOCKED bootloader. Chainfire found a way around it on some devices, but those devices could only root via CF autoroot, they couldn't get TWRP at the same time. Granted, whether "this" or "that" device could use CF autoroot on locked bootloader is device specific, but that is where the user reads the CF Autoroot thread to see if their device meets that version of CF autoroots requirements, if it's one that can be used on locked bootloader, it will say so, if not, it will say that also.

Hello everyone, I have a Note 5, SM-N920a, running on nougat with bootloader N920AUCS4EQJ1
From searching on this site, this seems like the information I need, but anything specific to rooting my device.
The only thing I found was this

I see you have a bootloader 4. This link might work I have rooted my phone the model number is slightly different but I do have the same a bootloader 4. See this link
I have successfully rooted and installed rom then rooted the installed rom. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to do if you understand what your doing
