What's the best battery upgrade? - Nexus 5X Accessories

I recently just bought the 5X and I love it, yet the battery is used so I know it won't perform as good as if it was new, so what's a good battery to get? I'd prefer one that has a larger capacity than the stock, but doesn't require a modded back or anything

I've seen posts with users that performed the LG G2 battery mod (similar to the rage with the Nexus 5). IMO I wouldn't trust a ~3-3.5 year old battery however unless you somehow manage to source late-manufactured parts.

I'm actually looking at doing this myself. My current battery is dying. AccuBattery says my battery health is below 70%, and I'm only holding a 1,900mAh charge instead of the original 2,700mAh. The G2 battery is 3,000mAh. I bought a LG G2 battery (BL-T7), and a spare 5X battery (BL-T19) just in case it all goes south.
Doesn't look too hard to mod the battery, and then it's a drop in replacement. The two batteries are the same physical size, which makes it easier than the Nexus 5, which had a different size battery and required case modding.
I'm not sure how I feel about buying a G2 battery manufactured in 2013, but I doubt I could get a 5x battery made in the past 2 years anyways.

I got these 'OEM N5X' batteries, do they look legit: https://imgur.com/a/UROLN
Should I replaceme the battery in my brand new N5X from amazon with one of them, you think they will be better? Haven't opened the unit yet to compare the batteries - what dates of manufacturer do your batteries have guys? any newer than mine?

You will (possibly) have a fresh battery, but the capacity will be the same. Those batteries will be better than the one in your phone, but only because of age difference

Thanks, pretty much what I expected - but only if they are 100% genuine OEM - I read that most of these "OEM" batteries on ebay are just lower MaH batteries with proper stickers on them..

I got one of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MQZV9ZV/ I figured for $12, I'd give it a shot. I knew it wasn't OEM, so I wasn't going to be offended if it wasn't a full 2,700mAh.
The one I got was manufactured in 2016. It started off with a ~2,400mAh charge, but I think it's already dropped to ~2,200 mAh after a week or so. It's better than the 1,800-1,900mAh I was at before, but not phenomenal.

how do you check capacity between battery swaps?

I am planning to do a little more. I have already ordered a spare battery and a back cover. I will be connecting the second battery in parallel and make a hole in the new battery cover I have ordered. For the hole, I will 3d print a fancy red cover and will stick there with superglue.
I am waiting for my order to reach, then I will update here too the result.

Well if it was thin it wouldnt be an "extended" battery would it? The whole point is that its extended to fit more power into it.
If it was easy to get more power into a battery then HTC would already supply them with the HD2 and extended ones wouldn't be needed/wanted.
apperantly you dunno anything about material science.
CAN'T a new battery with a better performance with SAME SIZE come out? Oh of course no! cuz it doesn't have bigger size.
Don't think there are any worth considering... there are 1600mah batteries on ebay but the overall consensus is that they're just about the same as ome battery ... it would truly make HD2 a much better phone if they can just extend the stock battery by a bit...

Apparently your logic and maners are weak. If you bothered to flip through next two pages of this section, you would find at least two threads about batteries. In those threads you would find that there is no slim extanded battery in existance for HD2.

lol, your scientific/logical huge brain obviously missed the point.
You asked for an "extended" battery, that would infer you wanted one that was "extended" beyond the normal limits. Currently the only way to get one that is beyond the limits of the ones that are supplied with devices are to buy ones that are "extended" meaning they are larger in dimension and hold more power.
Currently you CANT get a battery for our device that has the capacity of a extended one unless its "extended". The ones you see on ebay and other sites saying otherwise are FAKE.

You should dial back the Smarmy attitude amigo. Athiest is spot on by the way. The only way (currently) to have an extended battery for the HD2 is to make the battery larger.

I suspect that if someone made a genuine Lithium Polymer battery instead of Li-Ion it would indeed hold more charge. But I have not seen any such. The Andida is listed as LiPoly, but it can't be - it is basically the same mA as the stock battery.
Mugen has a 1300mah battery, which is a little more than the 1230 or 1250mah the stock battery comes with. I think I get a little more time with my mugen battery than with the stock, but never ran any definitive tests. But mugen is probably the best you will get with a battery the same size as the stock one.

Why do you guys disinform people? As a matter of fact there are "extendend" batteries that have the same size as the OEM batt. Where it is written that a battery extended in power must also be extended in size? Of course, there is a relation between size and power, but this relation might vary depending on the materials and the technology used.
Here you have a 2430 mAh battery (the "famous" business gold battery, which no one here bothered to test), and the seller says it has the same dimensions as the original one. If this battery has indeed 2430 mAh remains for us to find out. I'm thinking to buy one, just to test.

Nowhere in the add does it state that it is the same size as the OEM battery. I'm wondering if it really is; from the picture angles it is difficult to tell and might be deeper. But it is probably the same.
However, the packaging looks amateurish and suspect. This almost looks like a home-made wrapper.
Let us know if you order one!
Gold Battery
OK, I asked the seller about the size and if it will work with the stock cover, here is the answer:
"Hi,
I think it will work with it and the battery has a same size as standard battery."
On looking at the pictures, the batteries may be from Japan, but that is Chinese writing on the battery... or at least it is identical to my Andida "1600" writing.
Yeah...I would'nt put that battery into my HD2...seriously, that looks sketchy as hell. IF it turns out to be 2300mAH, which I highly doubt...it looks REALLY amateur-ish. It's all about memory management people, close crap thats running in RAM and your stock battery will last literally ALL day.

I really hope that you're joking.
Well I'm not, call me stupid, call me whatever you want but I do believe what I said for a main reason: one of my hobbies are rc flying models, both electric and with combustion engines. In this hobby you need powerfull batteries for controllers or engines (NiCD, NiMh, LiPo). I have a range of these batteries of different capacities and some of them have the same size but different power (eg: a 750mAh has the same size as a 2200 one). Of course, the ones that are more powerful are not cheap, but it's money well spent.
I'm not saying that the ugly looking "gold"battery which seems to be wrapped by a 5 years old kid has 2430mAh, but it worths tested. I just want to put this battery on the ohmmetter to read it's values. Regarding the safety for my device, I used chinese batteries on other phones too (spv m3100, kaiser) and none exploded, got bigger or overheat; they do loose their capacity much faster but if you are on low budget a 10 bucks battery saves your as* for a couple of months.

No one is calling you stupid, but you do seem ill-informed.
Cell phones are not the same as hobbyist 3rd party suppliers. Batteries for rc devices are much more third party friendly than cell phones. What we're likely buying from these Chinese manufacturers are probably cast-off batteries that didn't make it through quality control.
Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't.
I asked if you were joking because the battery you linked was blatantly sketchy. It isn't even worth checking unless you just like to throw money away.

I wish people would just give up trying to find a higher capacity battery which is of the same size. If it was that easy wouldn't you think HTC and ALL major phone manufacturers with their vast resources wouln't want the same thing? A few mm less in dimensions or a higher capacity battery can mean far better sales (millions more).
From experience with tons of mobile phones and 3rd party batteries they have always come out worse 99.99% time. Most of them are cheaply made where they blatantly lie about there actual capacity, don't meet safety standards, can explode, can bulge, overheats etc.
How many more threads about these cheapo batteries quoted with much higher capacity that is pulled out of thin air.
Not to rant but if you want more juice I recommend you get the official HTC extended 2300mah or Mugem battery. I'm afraid you can't have a thin phone and more juice. end of

are you sure that's even possible ? unless the battery was made of some other kind of materials, I have tyrouble seeing how you could store more power in the same battery size.
If you don't want a bigger phone, Your best bet would probably be to buy a second standard battery but it's a hassle to swap the battery when it's empty
If the battery is the same size it could in theory have more juice but it would be negligible. Seriously though, I picked up a charging cradle with battery charging slot and 2 spare batteries for $20. I also have a car charger and 3 chargers in my house. Unless you get a battery that is about double the size, you won't see a big difference and even then many batteries don't live up to their specs. Chargers and spare batteries are cheap. We're not dealing with smartphones of a decade ago where everything was proprietary and would cost at least $30 a pop.

I remember reading something about this... I think it might have even been on this forum but it was something along the lines of "Don't you think, if it were possible to fit more juice into the same size battery, that samsung wouldn't do that with their OEM batteries?"
Samsung, and I'm sure many other major device manufacturers don't just buy a battery off ebay and throw it in their phones. they spend time and money researching better battery technologies to get the best power/life they can.
It's my second day with an Andida 1850mAh battery, no big changes yet compared to my 8 month old 1500mAh OEM battery, i'll post back after a few complete drain and charge cycles.

How long have you had the battery? I'm looking for a new one as well but not if I am going to get scammed. Thanks!
Not Nexus related, but I have a vibrant that I got the Galaxy S 2 Epic 4G Touch battery for recently. Battery life went from about 6 hours to dead (month old 1500 mAh replacement battery bought at a phone hut) to 34 hours to dead (new samsung 1800mAh battery.) Nothing else changed.
My point is this:
1. If the above statements about samsung packing in as much as possible are true, why didn't the vibrant have a 1800mAh battery from the start? (hint, it is always about money.)
2. Take a crap 1500 mAh battery, slap a 1800 mAh sticker on it. People that buy these batteries will see an improvement because most generally they are replacing a worn out battery with a new one. Of course you will see an improvement, your worn out stock battery has only (arbitrary number) 600 mAh worth of usefulness left. The replacement is new and is not worn yet. (All arbitrary numbers follow) So, you will still see an improvement if you take a rated 1500mAh battery, that is labeled 1800mAh, but is in actuality only 1000mAh.
So asking if there is another, bigger, better battery for the Nexus made by Samsung, is a very valid question. So:

Because it is a device from 2 years ago (2010) and the S2 is from q3 2011. Maybe two years allowed them to cram more juice into the battery.
Maybe it wasn't viable then, to stick such a large battery, considering the power consumption of the vibrant compared to the S2. Maybe if they did the price would have gone up.
I highly doubt that Samsung would just stick different stickers on the same capacity batteries. maybe you had a defective or a non-original one. There are people that measure this kind of stuff. How much damage would Samsung's image suffer if someone found out that they sell a 1000 mAh battery with different labels and price tags?

I figured that would be obvious with my prior "phone hut" comment. I guess not.

I am a big fan of the OEM batteries. I have not tested a non-oem battery that will perform anywhere close to the stated specifications so far.
If you guys find some good battery reviews, tests, etc. please post up.
Keep in mind that comparing a brand new "Craptastic Brand™" battery to your old worn out OEM battery is kind of pointless for getting a feel of the comparative quality/capacity of a battery.

I don't think they'll be any improve from stock as they are the same size, but just want to know personal experiences.
I'm not really interested in the 3800mah giant battery is it would be like carrying a brick in the pocket.
I've had 2 anker batteries. Both froze my phone up. The first made my phone lag multiple times (how?), the second one I received froze my phone up while I was using it the day I got it.... I just ordered a spare OEM one and haven't had any issues at all. Not saying the Ankers are junk, I've just had a bad experience with them. Their reviews are mostly positive though. No personal experience on the extended though, except that I've heard they aren't worth the money.

dude my Anker is awesome granted i have the Samsung Epic 4G but my anker 1800 mAh is amazing.
I just got 3 days of battery life without even being on a charger at all. granted i also had to use airplane mode every 12 hours but if had just let the mobile data on and off like normal use i could score 2.5 Days.
The 1500 mAh OEM couldn't even break 12Hours.
I have a battery from Momax. (Google them or search for their batteries on ebay)
This is the buyer I bought it from: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Momax-X-Lev...357283?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item1e683586e3
Arrived pretty quickly (I think 1 week) given it was shipped internationally.
I have been using their batteries in a Galaxy S for over 8 months without any issues. Am using it in the Nexus S for a few weeks now and it works fine.
Momax batteries work and are a lot cheaper than Mugen or OEM.
And with that battery from Momax did you noticed a significant improvement in battery life?
Yeah. Some screenshots would be nice. Every Samsung battery I've had for this phone just gets destroyed. I don't understand why my phone idles so badly.
Greater Battery capacity is good. But it needs to be combined with good kernel settings (cpu governor, i/o scheduler, etc)
My original battery could last for 17hrs to 20hrs

You would say what the NFC in here ? I have bought a mugen battery 2500 if i'm not mistaken and one day i have had need the nfc for some test, at this moment the nfc was enabled but nothing happen. When i search on internet i saw few post that mention on the battery there is a part of nfc system so i came back to my old original oem battery and the NFC application worked back.
So take into consideration that when you change your battery, your nfc system may be inefficient.

the 'nfc system' is not 'inefficient', it's just that the nfc chip is inside the OEM battery so your nfc works with the OEM battery. when buying a battery from a different source do check whether the new battery has an nfc chip in it. cheers
the nfc chip is in the back cover of the phone, not in the battery

Zero Lemon is NOT making a battery case for the N6

So because I love the extended battery for my Galaxy S4, I emailed ZeroLemon asking about a battery case for the N6. here is their response:
Hi,
Sorry that we dont have the plan of making the gadgets for Nexus 6. We hope u can understand. Tks for your support!
Besides, we have external battery for your reference. http://zerolemon.com/product-category/external-battery/
Best Regards,
Joey
I was very upset when I got this email. maybe if they get enough people bugging them, they will make one?
anyone know of any other companies that plan on making extended battery cases for the N6?
Well... with the size of the battery in the phone, it's hard to say exactly if a battery case would be NECESSARY, what with the less battery-hungry Lollipop and it's Battery Saver as well. And though i've never used one or owned one, I'd probably rather use an external battery, not only because of the potential mAH of them with a significantly small package, but because it's not only for that one device.

Now the main reason I like the ZeroLemon battery case is because they not only have the secondary battery, but they also provide more protection than the Otterbox Defender cases. My girlfriend has one for her Nexus 5 and the thing is awesome.
Probably because the nexus 4 and 5 cases were total crap. I had them both.
ZeroLemon is worth it for Samsung devices or the G3; anything with a removable battery. Their uniqueness is in their tri-cell batteries. They made a name for themselves when they came out with 3xstock batteries the same size of the 2xstock batteries from all of the other aftermarket battery manufacturers. When they do accessories for phones with embedded batteries, they're not doing anything special.

Who, then, *is* doing anything special for the Nexus 6? I'm not necessarily loyal to Zerolemon, but the battery is less than 5000 mAh on the Nexus 6, which means it won't last me through the day. Does anyone know of any company that has announced a battery case for the Nexus 6? The point of a battery is so you don't have to plug it in, so an external battery is a non-starter.

Well I'm not saying they won't make anything for the Nexus 6, I'm just saying the signature of ZeroLemon was their tri-cell battery design which is irrelevant to a phone with an embedded battery.
As far as an external battery case for the Nexus 6, if anyone makes one, it's far too early right now. Wait a couple months. I doubt it's going to happen though, the Nexus 6 is just too big. Lots of companies have extended replacement batteries for the Note series, but that's different because the internal battery isn't embedded.
N5 didn't get its first battery case for many months after launch, and I think most would agree that was a much more practical design to work with for making a large battery case.
Does this phone need more bulk?

I'm going to agree with you on this. I bought the Zero Lemon for my LG G3 and it was huge! I mean really big. It literally looked like I was carrying a brick around. I can just imagine how big the case would be for the N6. And honestly the battery life on this phone seems to be great. I came from the Droid Turbo and which has a huge internal battery (3900 mAH), and this phone lasts just as long. Also the "Turbo Charger" is awesome. So there's that.

I am curious, if you used the turbo charge fairly often (maybe not every day) would it deteriorate the battery at all more so compared to just a normal charge cycle? Or have they started to improve batteries too?

I have only used the Turbo Charger on my Moto X 2nd Gen. since I received the phone on October 16th. I haven't noticed any issues with the battery not retaining a charge for as long. I never even unpacked the standard charger that came with the new Moto X. Granted it has only been a little over a month.
Honestly. I have no idea if in the long run the battery will suffer from the "turbo" charging. I guess only time will tell. It would be really bad on Motorola's part to design a phone with a non removable battery and a charger that ruins said battery. We'll just have to wait and see.
What are y'all talking about? The battery isn't removable is why no one with be making a bigger battery
I've never even heard of this product but I sent them an email asking for an ETA on when they would start shipping for you!

They don't replace the battery in the case of a phone like this. It would plug into the Micro USB and then you would have a spot on the case to plug into the case itself to charge both.
Looks like they make them for the iPhones which also do not have a removable battery.

Um that is not what the original post says. It says he is looking for a Zero Lemon "Battery Case". Do you know what a battery case does? A battery case is a case for the phone that has a built in battery. The phone goes into it and it generally connects to the phones charging port to supply more battery power to the phone. This would be most commonly seen on say an iPhone because the battery is NOT removable for quick swapping in another battery or a later battery.
You still have to be able to CHARGE the phone when it's in the battery case so some give you a port to plug a cord into, some are wireless charging. Most wireless charging battery cases also support plugging in a cord.
It's not really an extended battery as much as an external battery build into a phone case.
As the Nexus 6 does not have a easy to remove battery I could see why the op would be interested in a battery case but wow that would be bulky on this phone. I have a couple friends who have battery cases on their iPhone 4's and 5's and damn they add bulk!

Battery replacment with higher capacity

Hey everyone,
Just wanted to know if anyone has had any experience with using third party batteries for the N950. Specifically batteries with extended capacity. I have seen a handful of these batteries which say they have a 3600mah capacity over the stock battery capacity of 3300mah. They also say that they are Li-Po over the stock Li-Ion.
I cant post the link due to XDA rules but there are batteries available on Amazon under the title :
Galaxy Note 8 Battery ZURUN 3600mAh Li-Polymer Battery
The battery appears to have good ratings and would be a fitting upgrade for a decayed battery. I'm just asking if anybody with experience would recommend these batteries, are they real(in terms of spec), would the higher capacity effect the device negatively? And most importantly are they safe?
Any help would be appreciated!

Although I have no experience with batteries for the Note 8 as of yet, but from previous experience, I would recommend only official batteries. Even if these non official batteries are the correct mah, they will not have the same amount of cycles, so you will probably go through 2 or 3 of these batteries for the life of the official one.

Yeah good point, quite a gamble in the sense of charge cycles. Thanks for the advice!

I have had my Note 8 since the day it came out and I'm still using the same battery and I still get well over 8 hours of usage before I need to recharge it. I only charge it to 90% and I never let it discharge fully it's usually back on the charger whenever it gets near 20%. A friend of mine decided to put a 4,000 mah battery in his Note 8 only to find out that it wouldn't charge to 4,000 and it was dying much much faster than the original battery and it took even longer for it to charge back up so I wouldn't recommend getting aftermarket parts for it.

Huh, as for my device, I got it recently pre owned however the previous owner didn't take anywhere near as much care of my device as it seems your taking care of yours. So the battery capacity is pretty decayed and I've found it hard to get a healthy OEM battery online.
With my current new but unhealthy battery I wouldn't be able to protect it as I would like to by using the charging ranges you do. Tho I do really want to!
So I was thinking a new third party battery could be better than a 'new' oem. But again just another gamble it seems haha.
Thanks a lot for your advice!

Ifixit, who are reputable imo, have a link for the official battery . I would advise skipping Amazon/Ebay for it. Although it is €25, it is worth it. (They also sell all the tools you will need for replacing it and all the steps!
