Flashing stock Android Nougat on a Xiaomi Mi 5 - Xiaomi Mi 5 Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I'm pretty new to all this, so forgive my ignorance. I have a Xiaomi Mi 5 with their gloabl MIUI 7 rom installed, unfortunately I really dislike it, it's really buggy, things crash regularly, very poor if i'm honest. I was wondering if it was possible to flash stock nougat onto this phone, no MIUI or anything like that, just the standard google release?
Thanks.

Here you go AOSP
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-5/development/jdcteam-android-source-project-nde63x-t3507529

it depends if your phone is unlocked or locked, by the way you can try updating your miui 7 to 8, since it's already old.
you can see a lot of ROMs in the development section

MI A2 pie downgrade or switch to 6X?

So after a few days scrolling through the forums, i realised that TWRP is not working on Pie update and it only works properly on Oreo Mi A2. I also realised that you can switch A2 to 6X and mod it using 6X TWRP etc2
Now I want to ask if you would recommend me to =
- Downgrade to Oreo
or
- Switch to 6X?
If i can, i would like to revert to stock so that i can still have my device under warranty (5 week old btw)
Not, Pie better, Miui 10 bagss

On my opinion, don't attempt to downgrade your OS because it may hard brick your phone. If you succeed downgrading, you may experiencing some hardware problems, such as WiFi, Bluetooth and etc. Google intent to disabling OS downgrade since Oreo (Anti Rollback Protection). About 6X MIUI ROM version, this considering as rooting your phone and Xiaomi are not recommending side loading the ROM. If you really don't want Android One Program (hating and can't wait to fix bug's like me), Custom ROM's maybe recommended for you which is offer on some forum threads. But I rather wait for the next future update from Xiaomi and I know they'll fix the flaws of this phone. And of course I don't waste my opportunity to experience free update on upcoming Android Q!
Oreo is ok the best, if you have unlocked bootloader and critical you can downgrade with no problem at all. I have done it after buged pie and other times after custom roms.
I have switched my A2 to 6X for so long now that I can't even remember. I see no point in going back to A2. All custom roms for 6X are much simpler to flash and handle. No dual partition bull****. Plus I can flash miui anytime I want either. I personally see no advantage of A2.
Come to the dark side. Convert to a 6X.

The last line is really tempting. I've been considering converting my Mi A2. Have you experienced any bugs after converting, in MIUI or in custom roms? Perhaps the camera bug?
Also, which rom are you currently on? Any bugs?

Essentially both phones are the same so bugs are almost non-existent. You know I've noticed some people complain about the camera bug but I am yet to encounter it, and its been months. But I always depend on gcam so maybe this is only on if we try to use the stock cam. Even if the issue arises, there's a definitive fix by changing the build.prop to whyred (I think).
I'm currently on Havoc 2.2. I think its the most flexible and customisable rom for our device. Of course you can try miui first and then come to AOSP based roms. One persistent bug in AOSP based roms is that notification light doesn't work (for me at least) and I've come to live without it. Auto brightness may glitch but fixes are pumped out fast enough. So far I have no reason to go back to A2 stock.

The Pros of a Mi 9T Pro over a K20 Pro?

So, I was a bit impatient when getting this phone, and I got it around 2 months earlier (first week of July), in the form of the K20 Pro. Now that the Mi 9T Pro has come out, I wanted to know what exactly are the differences? From what I gathered, my phone with the global rom just has its bootloader already unlocked, and the global rom is fake. I noticed as much when I found out that I wouldn't be receiving updates for my OS, and some banking apps were either warning me about root access, or refusing to work (Google Pay).
What I was thinking was to flash the Mi 9T Pro ROM on my phone when it became available. Considering it should be official, I thought that it might work using the MiFlash tool as well, which would be pretty nice. However I'm not sure whether this is possible. What I wanted to ask was - is it possible to flash the OFFICIAL EU ROM for the Mi 9T Pro, on my K20 Pro (w/ the fake global rom)? And if so, would there be any benefits (outside of finally getting updates, and having an official ROM)? I doubt I'd be able to relock my bootloader (and frankly I don't want to risk hardbricking my phone...), but I can circumvent that with Magisk.
Thanks a ton!

Yes you should be able to flash the official EEA fastboot ROM, when it's available. And you are correct in saying you won't be able to lock the bootloader. Benefits depend on your definition and what your comparing against. Since the 7 day wait was over I've been on custom ROMs. I'm my opinion there are no benefits to being on any official MIUI, but then I don't like MIUI. When on the EEA ROM you should get OTA updates, after that I'm struggling to think of a benefit. I'm sure others can add more.

I'd honestly agree with you - I'm a bit of a purist. But at this point, I've become way too attuned to the gestures, and they all feel so second-nature to me now, compared with what I've heard for Android.
Also my worries about custom ROMs were about some hardware compatability, since it's a relatively new device. Like the camera for example, I was planning on installing a custom ROM later on down the line, like in 2020.
That's great to hear though, thanks a bunch!

The MIUI gestures was the only thing I liked and actually missed after the week, I'm hoping the Android Q gestures will be good enough. As things stand you may not have to wait until the end of the year, things are picking up the pace more lately. Most ROMs are stable, provided you follow the installation guides fully and not take shortcuts. Really it's camera apps that still have some catching up to do. The ANX app, which is the stock MIUI camera app, still has bugs. It crashes when trying to access the telephoto lens. I've not found a GCam port that works well yet, the one that can access all three lenses constantly has FC's. And ones that are more stable don't access all three lenses.

"Mi Services" out of box installed? Do i really have plain Android One?

Hi Guys,
just got my new A2 and i am a bit confused. It has a Mi Services App running for opt in and some other Mi App installed which i cannot uninstall. Do i have the right Android Version? I did an OTA update but that hasn't changed the fact
If i don't want those apps, which Android 9 ROM can you recommend?
Thanks in advance!

Mi services are an opt in component. They are used by mi to collect some user experience info so as to improve upon the product.
The other mi app is the mi community app which is like any other forum found in companies like one plus etc. That too can be uninstalled... Other then that, this is pure android.
Trust me, stay on stock as long as you are getting updates.... there's no reason to switch to custom roms so soon

Thanks. I read up on other threads that all are extremely in favor of the Pie Havoc ROM. Do you have an opinion about that?

I haven't touched the world of custom rom for mi a2.
That's why, i can't give you any advice regarding them.
Stock rom is buggy mess, also why you want 9.0 rom? we already got some good 10 custom roms try them out :fingers-crossed:

What bugs you encountered?
Apart from the brightness bug(you can't go below 19 percent of brightness), I didn't encountered any bug in the stock system.

I'm currently running HAVOC-OS-v3.0 TEN on my Xiaomi MI A2 and really like it. I'd definitely recommend if you're looking to flash a custom ROM.

what about bugs? Everyone is saying differnet things
I heard android 9 havoc has almost no bugs, thats why i was thinking 9
you can disable those apps with adb commands keeping the stock rom (cant remember exactly how but it's definetly possible)
the apps are providing the feedback function (so you can report bugs if you find any) and support for the camera app - which is the miui camera instead of the stock android. (you can always install another camera app and use that instead)

Early Android 10

Hey guys,
For a while we are all waiting for the official Android 10 update.
But I'm feeling kinda tired of waiting for it. I am not a person that flashes new roms, new software frequently. That's why I'm looking for a custom Android 10 ROM which has no major bugs and can take me a couple of months without flashing any new ROM.
Which custom Android 10 ROM would you suggest?

yes
It is supposed that Android 10 will arrive in the second or third week of December, please don't ask me how I know this or where did I get the information, I'm basing this in previous upgrades for the MI A1s and MI A2s.
