Samsung Notes missing feature! No Zoom in functionality... - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Why is there no zoom functionality available in Samsung Notes anymore? Anybody else notice it? It was very helpful for me to add images of writings & notes in S-note and zoom in to get a better view of the written content. I can no longer do that
No Zoom in functionality available in Samsung Notes.

There is a magnify function with the s-pen, you can select a part of the screen to magnify/zoom

Thanks, I did not think of that.
I wish they won't remove the zoom feature though. It was amazing to zoom in on text and now with higher resolution it would have been a pleasant surprise. Kinda bummed out.

i do not know if this helps, but you could download the latest s note and use it like normal. The action memo also works great too

Having the same issue with the Samsung Notes app - looks like they rolled out a new version of the app that isn't in the Play Store for the Note 8. Note 8 is version 2.0.00.83, and the one in the Play Store is 1.5.00-56 - pinch zoom works fine on the older version which I haveon my Tab A w/ S-pen.
Magnify tool works well for reading notes, but I'm used to zooming in before writing so I can fit more on one page.

I have the exact same issue. I am all about updates as long as features aren't reduced. Sadly, that's the case with Samsung Notes. You can no longer zoom in to fit more in one page.
Also they removed the Multi clip feature in Note 4 where you could have as many as 10 screen clippings in one sitting and then add them to where ever you wanted. That feature was removed in Note 5. No wonder people call most of Samsung features gimmicks since they don't have the nuts to be confident in their own intuitive features whereas Apple stands by their ****ty features arrogantly even if they're completely useless. I've had all the notes so far and am now on Note 8 and am wondering why Samsung does this ****.

I gave that ago but S-note freezes on Note 8. They probably deemed it useless. What a pleasant surprise from Samsung.

Need info on note taking before buying...

I'm looking at the G-Note as my next phone. I already know Android, but I need to know is the Note good at taking extensive notes, not just "Look at this" notes. I'm not talking about writing term papers on it, but a few paragraphs. Also, is there Google Docs integration. That would be awesome.
thanks in advanced.
Personally i wouldnt take more than a few sentences of notes if i needed too.. But everyone is different..
It's a large screen phone, not a tablet PC.
YMMV. If you can type fast on a software keyboard, go for it. Or maybe a bluetooth keyboard and mouse typing directly into Google Docs would work for you? I wouldn't rely on the S-Pen for fast lecture notes though...but it's possible with practice.
You may be better suited for a Galaxy Nexus and, say, a Wacom Tablet PC (like my Lenovo X220 tablet with one note) for extensive note taking.

+1 on the X220 for extensive handwritten note taking.
That said, you can still pair up a full sized bluetooth keyboard (like the MS Mobile Keyboard 6000) just fine and use a dedicated bit of office software, like QuickOffice Pro. You can probably make annotations with your s-pen afterwards if need be. Might be a bit clunky in practice, but it's an idea at least.
Thanks for the info. The notes I will be taking will b at my own speed. I work in networking and I do a lot of network diagrams and take notes on test results. So I wouldn't be trying to write a mile a minute. I'll look into you're suggestions.

I think the Gnote would be perfect for something like that..
I am using the note for note taking, at first when I used it, I used the software that Samsung has incorporated into the note for that purpose, although the conversion of my handwriting to text was ok, I found myself having to correct words fairly often. On this basis I would have still recommended it for your purposes with my comments highlighted.
I also own an Asus transformer tablet, I did use this for note taking but at times, for me it was still too big to carry around all the time, this might be an issue for you too if you considered something like the X220 as recommended by others. On the transformer, I bought an app from the market called WritePad which is an app that changes your handwriting into text, this app was ok on the transformer however I would not have recommended it either as the recognition was similar to the Notes performance.
I have now installed WritePad on the Note and expected the same results however I can very confidently say that this app is awesome on the Note, I get about 95% accuracy when writing continuously on the Note and it is way better than the propriety software supplied with the note. You will get the best results from this app in landscape mode as there will be more writing area and the app can be set to learn your writing style over time.
If you do not need your handwriting to be converted to text, I would say it is ok to write on but you will need to practice a bit until you get accustomed to the pen to glass feel.
Thanks for the info. I'm going to pull the trigger and get this phone. I'm only waiting now to see if it's coming to AT&T or not. I'm going to be with AT&T for a while anyway, might as well score the Note with my upgrade that I have available. Hopefully Samsung will give some information on this at CES. If they don't announce one, I'll get an unlocked Note.

Is it possible to get Note 10.1 features?

So, for those of you who haven't seen the "Introducing Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1" video Samsung recently posted to YouTube, then you should probably check it out here before reading onwards into this post. There are two features highlighted greatly within the video which really interest me, but unfortunately there is no reason frankly nor monetary backing for me to get a tablet (hence why I purchased an all-in-one device such as the Note), and these are the Learners' Hub and the split-screen multitasking shown. Can I download this hub and get it working on my Note and is there any way to split the screen to view multiple apps on my Note's screen at the same time?
Update
UPDATE: Found "Learning Hub" by Samsung on Samsung Apps. It hasn't got a great selection, but could prove useful for studying history (which I am doing) for example. Just want to split the screen for multitasking so that I can copy information from a web-page to S-Note easy and stuff like that. I saw a calculation somewhere that the Note's screen split in half landscape would give you two 3.6 inch screens, which is the same size as the iPhone's screen.
Does it only work on stock ICS?

You need the Samsung Apps store to download it, so probably. It is quite useful for a bit of learning - there are even a fair few free books.

I anticipate that if the demand is high enough, it's only a matter of time before a dev implements a port of these features to the galaxy note.

(Request) Samsung galaxy note multi-window feature port

Any chance some enterprising dev could get this running on our nexus 7's

AOKP got this request recently.
Seems a Cornerstone build would be the only way out...which is unlikely.
I'm fully aware this would probably be quite difficult to port, and likely quite time consuming.
Having said that, I also want this. It makes so much more sense on a 7 inch tablet then a 5 inch whatever.
This works with a handful of Google Apps, no other apps. I don't see the point.

Running 2 apps at the same time. Seems like a great idea to me. It supports a limited amount of apps, but unlike Galaxy Note 10.1, you could probably hack in other apps to work.

Yes, but the Galaxy Note 2 supports all apps in multi-window mode...
This would be *nice* to have but I don't know how much easier it would be then to just multitasking between 2 apps now and having the apps full screen. I can see some of the benefits like watching a youtube video while chatting on Google Talk. There are some good alternatives such as popup video players and notepads that overlay on top of current app and typically are resizable and movable.
While it makes sense this would be better on a 7" then a 5"... it really would be best on a 10". 7" barely gives me enough breathing room for 1 app. Plus most of the "compatible apps" are simple things like a calculator and notes
Well it seems VERY useful to me.
It's better than popup apps in my opinion - more app options.
Overscreen browser is a great alternative for now
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
No, it's not.
This allows multiple apps to run side by side, Overskreen is just the browser. Also, it's not even compatible with Jelly Bean, so no one who owns a Nexus 7 can use it.

No, as I said, handful of specific Google apps. Read up on it. Will the list grow? Maybe? I'd have to guess it is a sdk used to support the function, is it worth app dev time to do it and possibly maintain multiple versions of their app?
more then google apps
Not just google apps can do this on the samsung note 10.1 .
samsng snote and lecture app
browser
vidoe player
picture gallery
polaris office
Photo shop (special note version)
I think there a few others that are on the samsung web app store. Samsung sbe adding apps to this.
Now for the bubble burst. The reason they work on the galaxy note is the new QUAD Core cpu and 2 GB Very fast ram .. samsung tried to release a less ram/power version of the 10.1 note with a higer res display. they backed the display down and increased the cpu//ram. this is also to support the WACOM S PEN..
I have been reading alot about the device because mine will be here Monday. So the above if from my reading and research. I can update you more mid next week.. I do not see a need for split windows on a 7 inch screen .. get the overscreen browser and try it.. JUST Does not work for productive work...
Hope this help make it more understandable... too bad samsung did not make the n7 . i give up because of the screen issues sent two of them back and will NOT order a 3rd...
Dude. Overskreen DOES NOT work on Jelly Bean. And it is just one app, vs an entire suite of Google Apps.
Also there's no need for window management.
Nexus 7 has a quad-core processor too, just less RAM - which isn't even a problem, it still can handle side by side apps.
And you're telling some weird stuff here. We are talking about Galaxy Note 2, which allows more apps, and works better. AND it works on a 5 inch screen, so it'll be awesome on a seven inch.
So yeah, please don't come back with your 'research' to tell us that you think that this feature is unnecessary.
i hope sincerely as a dev can make a mod for port this feature in future beacause it's very usefull even if work only with google apps it's better ,
anyone know if a moded youtube apps existing for play a video on background because i search since 3 month but not find ?
thx
I don't think there is one, sadly. Android doesn't support true multitasking
While i would love to have or port this it simply isnt possible, it requires a lot of changing to the frameworks and it would be hard to decompile all of samsungs sources and extract it.

Stock android not, but there are a few roms with cornerstone, i think mainly on 10 inch tablets.
Web os did this kinda on a dual core wish android would absorb that multitasking feature right now running multiple apps kinda is a hit and miss

Which App to write with Direct Stylus 2.0

Hey Everybody ,
I want to use the shield Tablet for some Note taking during class / work.
So i am asking for some Apps you tested with Direct Stylus 2.0
Which work best with palm recognition ?
Maybe some advise for settings ?
At the moment l can only say that the Android Handwriting Detection is really not bad. Maybe good for longer texts in landscape mode
Thanks in advance

Honestly I could not use the stylus very well, the tip is too soft for me to use it to take notes...
Sad to hear mate.
I'm facing some problems with the palm recognition.
I hope Nvidia will enhance this feature in the near future. An dedicated writing App like Dabbler for drawing would be really nice

When the stylus is removed, there should be an extra navbar icon on the left that disables touch input. I guess that would work to prevent unwanted inputs, just not automatically.
I tried several apps to make quickly notes but the Samsung Note experience is still a mile ahead...
I dont mind the stock evernote, not that I frequently use it. I find it works pretty well. I agree with hairdewx the stylus is kinda soft to take notes with. I use it for drawing myself. Dabbler is friggin horrible but the App ArtFlow works amazing with the Tablet and the Stylus.

It helps but if you want to zoom in or out, moving the sheet you are writing on you cant use your Fingers.
It sometimes happens, that when I lift or move my palm, it is recognized as an touch input with the Stylus.
So there would be the chance to increase the rate of recognition. would really help me

Works great for note taking. I use it daily at work for meetings.
I think the most best app for I've found so far is Autodesk Sketchbook Express. Super fast, fluid and GREAT for note taking although still can't find ruled template but that might just be laziness on my part

Autodesk Sketchbook has traditionally/historically been a programmed aimed at drawing/painting- so it's going to lack a ruled template, unless you decide to create one/scan one in, and use it as a layer underneath your drawing canvas.

Definitely but its recognition of stylus strokes is by far the fastest of any of the apps I've used, including NVIDIA's. That was the appeal. But I do get your point
I can't speak specifically to the stylus, but when I have used normal capacitive styli, the main app I have used is LectureNotes by Acadoid. It's a fantastic note-taking app, and even if you can't finagle it to work exactly like you would think a Galaxy Note would, it has a lot of customization that you can make to the program so that it better fits your needs. There's a free trial version if you want to give it a try, but I use the full version and feel that it is worth the money.
Again, not sure how well it interacts with apps that are not in the default installed software package (I'm hoping fine though, I'm switching to one in the coming weeks!), however I do know that the app itself has some settings for heuristic palm rejection, and that there are different settings like that you could fiddle around with.
Hope that helps!
Anyone actually test lecture notes with the shield? How is the accuracy and speed + palm rejection?
for that mater any other recommendations?

Since my previous comment I had the opportunity to use LectureNotes and it is by far the fastest of the apps for stylus recognition...even beating sketchbook.. Very useful and comprehensive app. Highly recommended!
So it works well with lecture notes? As in functional as a note taking tool? ( ie above average accuracy, palm rejection etc)

Yes for sure! Check it out
Papyrus
Papyrus is what i use on my note 3 and my note 10.1 exynos edition.
Works awesome but haven't tried on my shield yet.
If it works, i use all that are mentioned above as well, but for ease of use and cloud integration between devices, and simplicity, i think it is the best.
Will see if i can test later.
Xarr
Anyone tried OneNote with this tablet? (note taking part, possible?)
I personally prefer Fiinotes or Handrite Notes for note taking. I've found these to work very well for note taking and recording meeting minutes.
I got the Nvidia Shield with half the purpose of taking notes during class and I found just the app for it. It's LectureNotes (here's the playstore link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.acadoid.lecturenotes) It is a paid app sadly, there's a trial though for you to check it out. You can backup your notes, create separate notebooks for each class or something, you can export them to PDFs, input typed text if you like, pictures, crop them as you like etc. There's really anything you might consider needing, there's options for stylus and for using your fingers at the same time (like recognize the finger as an eraser while the stylus as a pen etc. It's somewhat messy in the settings section, it has far too many so you'll have to play around and see what suits you, it wouldn't do you much good if I gave suggestions of what I use probably, although I can take screenshots if you'd like. Check it out, it has also some extensions for audio recordings (sounds useful) or video recordings (not so useful for me at least), but since you pay extra for them I haven't tried neither.
Best of luck! Hope you like it, it really did the trick for me.

[Q] shape and handwriting recognition, where did they go?

I tested a Samsung galaxy note 8 mini tablet nearly 1 year ago and was amazed at the snote app which instantly converted rough hand drawn shapes such as squares into an editable vector equivalent, and also converted handwriting into text on the fly with near 100% accuracy. It was a note takers dream
I just bought a galaxy note 4, and the snote app is missing both those features.
Why did Samsung cripple the note 4?
Without these 2 features, I find the spen useless for meeting note taking, the only reason I bought it.
Or am I missing something?
I found the handwriting keyboard and found the recognition rate appalling.

vector how to
Thanks for posting the "how to" for making a vector shape. I would never have guessed how to do it.
Unfortunately, this is not what I was looking for - the snote app "used to" do it on the fly, as you draw, which was FANTASTIC.
The way you outlined is slow, laborious, and un-initiative - i.e. useless for note taking.
My 2012 Note 10.1 has the on the fly shape recognition feature. I love that.
The version in this Note 4 isn't as good and I miss the Wolfram Alfa integration as well.
