Anyone planning on using a Style Ring or similar on their Note 8? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Accessories

I do a lot of walking in Central London, barging through countless tourists and so on. I use wireless headphones so keeping my phone in a pocket affects the line of sight and breaks up the Blutooth signal, so I keep the phone in my hand (also i like to manage my music and check train times, etc). I currently use a Nexus 6P and it is so big, I have put a Spigen Style Ring on the back to allow me to use the phone without fear of it being knocked out of my hand, or even grabbed by some thieving crapbag (even though the joke would be on them, as I have the dreaded battery/shutdown issue).
Anyone else planning on using one, or similar device? Any better option out there? I will also have a skin and have bought a Ringke Slim in case the skin doesn't work out.

I have used Bluetooth headphones on a couple of phones including my note 8. I always keep my phone in my pocket and have never had a problem with Bluetooth breaking up. When I was a machinist I would keep my phone in my toolbox and walk around the shop and it never broke up. Try different headphones.

The headphones aren't the problem, bluetooth naturally suffers in the outdoors, where line of sight is reduced. My phone usually lives in my back pocket, hence the worsened connection problems. Anyway, this thread was for any suggestion re. the use of a Style Ring of any kind....

Bluetooth doesn't rely on LOS. It does however rely on 2.4ghz spectrum which is overly crowded. And anything that interferes with that spectrum will interfere with bluetooth.

I have one on my S7 Edge.
I'm thinking about getting it on my Note 8, but there are both strong pros and cons to it.
Pros:
- Once it becomes used too much it's much easier to rotate, you can use the phone as a fidget spinner!
- When I was in Thailand, it probably saved my phone a few times as I was able to take photos on a really unsteady speedboat without fear of dropping my phone.
- The phone is much easier to hold when taking selfies. Just push your middle finger (XD) through the ring and use your thumb to take photos. Piece of cake.
Cons:
- I couldn't get wireless charging to work anymore as the ring was in the way, not a huge deal to me but it's somewhat of a deal as I do have a powerbank with wireless charging.
I am probably not getting the ring and get a nice dbrand skin instead.
But for those who care about holding their phone safely, the ring is a fantastic option. Just remember, it messes up wireless charging and is probably not removable. I never tried to remove the ring but it IS really strongly glued which is how it's supposed to be, you don't want your phone decoupling while you're fidget spinning it around

I used to have a FlyGrip on my Note 4's Caseology bumper. They are made for iPhones, but will work for other phones. Ruins wireless charging but they are perfect for one-handed use of large phones.

I just bought this detachable lanyard and hope it works well, it should not effect the wireless charger since it is pretty thin and goes on at the bottom
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072WNXRW3/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I also put this on my phones, and depending on the placement or how big the phone is depends on it stopping wireless charging, I have a previous phones one, on my note 8 at the bottom and it does not stop wireless charging when it is naked, not sure how it will work with a case on and or with the strap i bought on also.

Bluelounge Nest (tablet stand) and Milo (phone stand) for $15

Hey guys,
I've been using my Nest and Milo from Bluelounge.com for about a week now, I absolutely love the products and felt compelled to share.
Nest is a tablet stand for $15. You can rest your tablet horizontally or vertically. I'm using it with my Nexus 10.
Milo is a microsuction stand/dock/holder for phones, also starting at $15. The suction is so strong, you just put your phone on and it magically stays there. No stickiness. I'm using it with my S3.
Do you know if it's possible to use the milo in your car?
Even better is the ZaggKeys Flex Bluetoothe Keyboard/ Stand that is amazing. Search it.

Hmm I'm not sure but maybe I'll try it and post my results back here.
Two problems we may encounter:
1) The bottom of Milo may expect a smooth surface (eg glossy wooden desk), not sure
2) If you want to remove the phone from the stand (ie to change songs or set navigation destination) it might be a pain. You have to use two hands to remove the phone, one hand on Milo to keep it stuck to the table and the other hand to take the phone off. If you just pull your phone with one hand, the whole thing will come off.

Quick Window Case Mod?

I have the OEM Quick Window Case for the Verizon version of th G2 and I really like it, but as many people here I hate the fact that it won't stay closed, so I wanted to ask you guys, has anybody modded the case in any way to make it stay closed? Maybe putting a thin magnet on the flap (I don't know if this would affect the phone) or some other clever method that I may be overlooking. I'm not looking for an air tight seal, just so I can set the phone on a desk and have the flap stay down.
I was looking on other threads but I could't find anything about this so I think either nobody has done it or at least hasn't posted about it.
I just stored the empty case upside down for a few days which I guess forced the hinge to learn to stay in that position. The door/flap was tucked slightly inside the case during this time, this probably helped as it was in a position beyond closed. I'll try to post a picture shortly when I get home for lunch.
I've wondered about adding magnets to the case as well. I really like the looks and function of the case but have held off because of what I have been hearing about the case not staying closed. I don't want my screen going off and on all day because the case doesn't stay shut.

The screen doesn't really go on and off. If you have it sitting on a desk it just stays open enough to be anoying (because you see it open and your OCD might kick in) but not enough to make the screen turn on. If you have it in your pocket then it's usually closed since there's not really a lot of room for it to move in there.

Looks good but it doesn't seem to be available for the Verizon version.
This is a little off topic, but for those that do have the quickwindow case, do you know if the music controls on the outside work with 3rd party music players or google music, or is just the stock music player?

My understanding (via reading threads) is the the music controls only work with the stock player, there is no integration with google music (at least on the Verizon variant).

That may be the nail in the coffin for me. I use google music as my main music player. I also use beyondpod for my podcasts. I was hoping it would be like the lockscreen which allows for controls regardless of media player. It seems they overlooked quite a few details related to this case.
I can confirm it only works with stock music. Only way to get 3rd party support would be a custom row, and even that's a long shot.

Completely agree. Especially since these are expensive cases and there doesn't seem to be any 3rd party (at least for the Verizon version) that are less than $45. So, I in the same boat as you, too limited in functionality to justify the cost.
I'm pretty sure the Verizon model is the same as the others. There is a thread here where a guy measures all of the variants with a fine measuring device and they are all the same size and thickness.
To my understanding, the only difference on the Verizon is the buttons are smaller, which on a generic case, will leave a little extra gap around the buttons, but should still fit.
Right, but that's not really the point though. I'm trying to find a way to keep the case closed but it doesn't have to be specifically for the Verizon model. If we come up with a way it would surely apply to all cases.
I know I'm a bit late to the party, but since I'm sure people spent a bunch of money on the case, I'll offer what worked for me.
I noticed that the case wasn't laying flush against the left side of the phone...so I stuffed the case full of paper towel (to stretch out that area) and then ran a hair dryer over the part that wraps around the left side for about 10 minutes. It got 100% better after doing this one time. It might sound crazy, but it worked for me and I didn't have to mess with any magnets or anything else.
I hope it helps!

[Q] Smart Wireless Charging Phone Sleeve for Nexus 6

Guys, I'm going to be launching a wireless charging phone sleeve on Kickstarter (Novelsys ampere) in January for the Nexus 6. The unique selling point will be the Smart app that communicates with the sleeve.
I'm doing research for the launch now to determine what features to incorporate in this app:
Display estimated battery life in hrs of phone and ampere
Control when charging starts
find your phone or ampere when one is missing
notifications to recharge at time or location
What other features would you like to see? I've recently posted in the S5 and Nexus 5 forums too, and I've been told not to dilute the product, which I agree with heartily. These are the features I've narrowed it down to. What other things do you think we need to bake in? It will probably be open to developers post-Kickstarter.
I myself use a Nexus 4 with Qi built in but I haven't found a satisfactory wireless charging solution yet... that's kinda why I worked on my own.
See more about the product: http://kickstarter.novelsys.co
Just subscribed on your website
Okay so this is meant to protect the phone and charge it at the same time? Im assuming there is a battery inside the case as well as a qi transmitter?
That's right. Paired with an app. And higher build quality than from your typical Qi charger. What do you think about the idea?
Subscribed as well...if you need a beta tester let me know.

Looks excellent, but you need to figure out a solution to why sleeves suck, they either have no top and don't hold the phone well or are too tight.
As long as it comes in black so I can keep it on with my uniform!
I'll beta if I need to as well!
Would you like my wallet now, or later?
Seriously, I hope this will be as good as it sounds.
Yes its black, and the internal colour has been changed from orange to grey so its more suitable for corporate environments!
That's an interesting perspective on sleeves. Yes will take that into account when testing.
aiight, im jumping on the bandwagon too. :fingers-crossed:
just subb'ed and am following you cats on instagram...
I think I'm getting a QI enabled power bank for Christmas..... But a sleeve makes much more sense! I think its a great idea. Definitely more secure and will keep the QI aligned to ensure it stays charging.
Any info about the mah of the sleeve for the Nexus 6. Would need to be enough to charge the device at least twice in my opinion.
What about a using magnets to help secure the phone inside the sleeve instead of just tension?
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Premium HD
honestly seems like a pretty good idea, the potential problems I see for this are targeting the correct consumer base. The phone is already big, this will make it huge, therefore its not going in anyones pocket. So, who carries phones around not in a pocket? People that have other places to put them, who has other places to put them?
1. Women (in their purse)
2. Older executives in a briefcase maybe?
3. College kids who might carry a backpack?
I may be wrong, but as much as I would like something like this, its just too inconvenient not to have my phone in my pocket. There's still some clip phone people out there, maybe adding a clip would help? Just my 2 cents, love the idea, just concerned its not being designed for the right demographic aesthetically.
The problem for me as others have mentioned is the bulkiness of the sleeve. When you add in the 3,000mah battery (assuming it would at least be this size) and coils for qi charging it's going to pretty thick. I'm Ok with that because this would be on my visor in my work truck, but wouldn't go great in pocket.
if you are taking the no idea is a bad idea approach, what if you incorporated this into a car mount with the display revealed, so every day I got into my car I could slide it in, and it would charge, then I could slide it out and take it with me, or if I KNEW i was going to need extra battery, I could detach the whole thing and clip it to a belt or throw it in a pack?

Agree with this idea!
I don't mean to intercept, but in the meantime and between time...
I've received this pouch/sleeve (handmade) and posted a bit about it here:

Very cool idea man. I'll back that.
It looks promising, is there rough price range for the sleeve?

That's a pretty sweet idea! Maybe that could come as a stretch goal or in the next iteration of ampere. I originally included a pocket at the back of the sleeve for cards and cash but didn't like the aesthetics/ bulk of it. That could actually have been space for a belt clip. Hmm. I could find some way to hack around it maybe.... thanks for the brilliant idea.

Please, feel free to share. I've been searching tirelessly for potential competitors too so I can learn how to improve ampere's user experience.
You know what, that's where I got the idea for ampere too, but I think I've made ampere sufficiently sexy, slim, and seamless with alignment + smart charging app that you'll at least consider it over that? If you must know, that was what I put together for the MVP (prototype) to prove product validation. So I guess you can say you just recreated ampere v1.

I thought about magnets too, but the sleeve itself helps with securing the phone and alignment. Magnets would make it harder to get the phone out of the sleeve, and would necessitate some kind of strap to lift the phone out, which in turn adds some to bulk.

Led View Cover

I got the LED view cover for S7 Edge and read somewhere that it should be possible to answer calls by swiping the led on the front... But I can't get it to work.
Also is it so that the LED is supposed to light up only in 2-3 seconds?
Have you switched on the nfc on your phone? This needs to be on for the case to work properly. The LED only lights for a few seconds on my case also. Hope this helps

It costs between £40 & £50 depending where you buy it from. Which country are you based in?
I bought this case when I got the phone, because there was no other decent case in the store at the time being and I couldn't wait till April for my spigen cases to arrive from amazon (I know, right..... April??).
It is quite nice actually. The materials used are very good, very "premium" (as it is socially accepted to say). The inside of the lid is a soft leather-like material and I feel quite certain it won't scratch the screen (like the SView for the S6 duo did). Also you DO NOT need NFC turned on in order to use the LED part of the case. I turned off my NFC the moment I got the phone and the case works flawlessly (accepting, rejecting calls etc).
One thing I do mind though is the limited functionality. I do not get why I can accept a call when the lid is closed, but I can't end it.... doesn't make much sense. Truth be told this is my only complaint really. The price is quite steep for what it offers though - if I were to buy the case again for the price I got it (circa 50 euro), I don't think I would. Don't get me wrong - it is a really nice case, it's just not worth so much.

I agree with you, interesting about the nfc, the instructions state that it needs to be switched on for the case to work fully. Are you getting text and email notifications with the nfc switched off? And the galaxy music player app showing the eq? Sammie should have created an app for the case to increase the notifications and timings etc.
Yes, I do get text notifications. Don't know about email and music because I use Play Music and Gmail, and the case does not work with third party apps (which is another bummer).

From what i read it gets power via nfc and doesnt require much, something to do with radiation energy given off by nfc. It might be rubbish but thats all i have heard
Anyone else annoyed by the NFC sound? How do I turn it off???
I think it is the S_Beam_error.ogg that plays (located in /system/media/audio/ui) ... Doesn't work turning off Android Beam. The sound is still there when the led cover gets behind the phone.

That's right. My case works without Nfc turned in settings, too. Strange thing is that at the beginning the case was not always working properly- delayed notifications, once I couldn't answer the call with a swipe, errors with displaying, etc. But after some time, about a week or more, it got better and now I rarely face any issues.
After reading this thread i went and bought it. Here are my thoughts.
The case is expensive but worth it if u can get it cheaper. I only paid full price cause i financed it from tmobile to pay $3 a month. For the $69.99 that it actually cost. I actually hate flip cover case but this one i really like.
Not sure if it is real leather but it feels really premium, it does look really premium. Has a flip cover is very easy to open and close.
It needs NFC only to pair at the begining, then u can disable it and still works 100% i get all my notification, the time etc, this is with NFC off (after pair)
I do like when u are in a call the led shows the duration of the call instead of the time, i also get my notification of sms and when im charging i get a cool animation of charging battery icon then a % battery number.
Wireless charging works just has well with this case. I really like how it feels and in half of day of use i have gotten use to this flip cover.
If u can find it under $50 i really recommend this case, very soft premium feel, i had before the samsung slim platic cover, it is nice looking but the back plastic also become very fingerprint and slipery. Not enough grip, also its more like scratch cover than anything else. This case seem to take a fall and protect. Plus is protecting the screen for fall and scratches.
this case is only ok, if it was around £15-20 it would be more appropiate. it just lets its self down with the notifications only staying on for a few seconds, if it stayed on all the time it would be a great case
3rd party notification
anyone working on LED cover notifications ?
the cover is excellent. however, i hope someone can develop application to include 3rd party notification such as whatsapp and facebook. it will be awesome !!
thanks

Earbuds live fitting problems

Got the Earbuds live with the phone, was initially pleased with the fitting and operation.
But wearing them while walking about they soon fall out. I've tried at every possible angle, and with both the rubber fitttings, but they soon fall out whatever I try.
My ears don't look unusual so I don't understand this. Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?
I haven't had a problem and I use the large tabs, my wife can't get them in her tiny ears but danged if she can't hear any little sound i make

Do you mind posting a couple pics with them in so we can see how they are fitting? Might help us out a little.
I have not had any issues with mine using the pad that came out of the box. I normally have to switch the buds to a larger one for better fit (ones that go in the ear), but these were perfect out of the box.
while I like ear buds, this is the age old problem..... do they fit? I hate ones that fall out all the time or don't fit snug..... so there should be a forum on these things.... specifically how they fit...

Here's a pic of the earbud in the right ear. What happens is the speaker end goes deep into the ear and the other only just holds against the earlobe. When I move about, that end gradually slides out and the earbud falls.
This is with the large pad fitted. If I use the small pad it hardly grips at all.

I've tried fitting at every possible angle. With both pads. The only way I've got it to stay for any length of time is like the photo. I know that's not right and it doesn't stay in long.
Do you have the ear pads on the right pills? Right on right and Left on left?
I have the Buds Live. They fit fine and are comfortable. No problems with them falling out. I am breaking them in right now ... so don't want to comment on sound quality just yet. I also have several other wireless earbuds; including the Jabra Elite Active 75t (my current favorites).
Just a reminder to fellow forum members ... if you PREORDERED the Note 20 Ultra (or Note 20), you may qualify for the $150 promo from Samsung. I qualified for the $150 and used it to buy the Buds Live. Total cost to me $22, nice deal. I don't know if this a US only promo. Good luck.

I push them down into my ears until they feel secure. I am 5'7" ... so not the largest ears.
Here's a picture of the bud in my ear, next to a snapshot from the Samsung video. You can see I've fitted it exactly as specified. The bud falls out within in few seconds.
If I fit the bigger pad and put it in the same place, it falls out even before I can take a photo.
Call samsung and ask for the sleeves. They were giving them away in Korea. These might help your situation.
Thanks for the hint!
I called Samsung and the support person hadn't heard of such a thing. But I insisted and they checked - it's called a skin cap. So it's on order. I have no idea what it looks like as Google couldn't find it. Just hoping that it works.
Thanks again.

Both of your photos look like you are putting them in your ears correctly. I think with a pre-molded product like the Buds Live, Samsung knows they will not work for every person. The fit will range from perfect to it does not work. You seem to be on the doesn't work end of the spectrum. You might want to consider returning them. If you decide to replace them, I can recommend the Jabra Elite 75t or Jabra Elite Active 75t.
I think these are the sleeves mentioned above:

Didn't even know there were extra fittings in the box. The buds fit me well before, but after changing they are even better now...haha

Thanks for the link! Can't wait to get them and see how they fit.

Are you able to move the part that goes into your ear a little bit up? See if that helps with it fitting better.

Yes. Up, down, every which way. I spent hours on it until the ears were sore!
Main reason why I avoided these. Earbuds that don't fit INSIDE the ear canal are always a no-go for me. No seal, no great sound, no security.
Thought I should come back and report.
The device is called the Skin Cap. It's a very thin silicone rubber sleeve that fits over the active end of the earbud, with three cutouts to sit over the ports underneath.
It doesn't add anything to the size or shape of the earbud, but it makes that end less slippery so it grips better.
After wearing the earbuds with the Skin Caps fitted for a day around the house, I can say they are a small improvement. But they never felt really secure, and one fell out when I bent over to pick something up. I don't think I could risk wearing them out in the street.
I'd like to try fitting an extension around on the other end to make it fit better, but then it would not fit into the charging case.
Not very happy.
I contacted Samsung support and they're saying that there are no Skin Caps available for the US
