Why would you want it on a note? If you want to root and run other os, get a s8+. Wouldn't the s pen become a paperweight?

Huh? Why would that be? I haven't had a note for a while but had twrp and root on my note 4, spen worked perfectly and saw daily use.

TWRP is a recovery image and a direct S8 TWRP port wouldn't affect the operating skin, so no S-Pen functionality would be lost.
But twrp don't give root.. I say let start a bounty

I think you've either misunderstood the question or don't understand the concept.
TWRP doesn't affect the OS at all but you can use TWRP to install a customised version of the OS that has more features, less bloat and still keeps all of the functionality of the official OS.
Before I had to move to a Lineage OS based ROM on my Note 3, I used ROMs that were based on Samsung firmware and the S-pen worked just fine.

I guess I've just been relatively happy with touch wiz so I never considered going that route. The last phone I ran a diff OS on was the n3 or n4.
My only complaints would be I'd like to be able to download torrents right to the sd card, and for them to fix the vpn bug.

If the stock software suits you, that's all good. But you have to understand that it doesn't suit everyone and many people want to have more control over how their device looks and behaves based on their needs and personal preferences.
I'll probably keep my Note 8 stock until I either get fed up with TouchWiz or some fancy custom ROM catches my eye, but even then, I'll probably root it and install TWRP as soon as the opportunity arrives.

I could not agree more. Every new phone I buy I don't expect a BL unlock. Especially Samsung. I expect someone will come up with a root method for the Note 8 eventually but if not, I'm still happy with my Note 8. I still have my unlocked Pixel XL to play with for ROM testing etc. I just wish Samsung would push Oreo out. I was in the beta and I think Oreo is much better than Nougat. I know it will likely be a month or more before we see it on the Note 8.

Why locked... I use the exynos version? crapdragon US version is locked, but with the F exynos version, bootloader is open and no problem to install TWRP / Custom rom so far^^
TWRP should be literally around the corner. Release date is this week, so TWRP and ROOT should be very close. ONLY FOR N950F and N950FD versions, EXYNOS. Snapdragon or USA or Canada variants are out of luck, just like the S8 snapdragons.

Wait 4 thread in Rom development hope twrp comes soon
Every phone I have had with a locked boot loader has gotten root eventually. Someone will get it running. Be patient the phone has not even official been released.

Well im on Sprint, and I'm not stupid enough to spend $1000+ on a phone I can't get insurance on and switch carriers too. Voiding warranty I can care less about cause I always rooted n romed right away, but no insurance......hell no. Root will be good enough when it eventually comes long. Also I like SD chips over Exynos anyways. What we need is more of the old school devs back. The Chad Goodman's of xda. I wish Samsung would offer an unlock code that we would agree voiding warranty too like HTC did before.

So android 7.0 has just been released today for Nexus devices (Nexus 6,player,etc) and quite frankly I'm really hyped for it to get released on Samsung phones ( in a year or two xD) or made by a custom rom... I don't really see features I'm dying to get, but it's always nice to have the latest OS. I wonder if there's any chance that Samsung will release an official (OTA) update for phones as old as the Note 4 and Note Edge. They probably have very little incentive to do it.

I know that on xda everyone is always keen to get the latest and greatest, but we all should calm down a bit. 7 is out since a few hour. Some Nexii haven't received the OTA yet and source isn't out. CM already said they'd merge N as soon as sources are made public. I wouldn't get my hopes up though. Naturally Samsung plus AOSP is a bit difficult. I'm sure we'll need to give it some weeks time (considering most of the kernel and drivers of M can be used).
I've no doubt some dev will get us the new shiny thing. :good:

I hate you Samsung for flooding new devices and yet very slow or no support for a new firmware for old devices.
I do not hope, or think that we will find anything really useful or revolutionary in it. As it never happened, at least not for me. I bought my Note4 with KitKat, rooted it immediately, and flashed an X-Note 4.4.4 and some other custom ROM´s on it. After Lollipop was released, i tried LL stock, and LL based custom ROM´s, i experienced shorter SOT, and almost that´s it. Advantages? Not really. I went back to 4.4.4, X-Note. It was a year ago or so. Two weeks ago something happened with my Note4, i had to reinstall it, so i thought i´ll give 6.0.1 a try. I´m using stock MM for two weeks now, "desperately" trying to find a reason to keep it, but... I like the off screen memo, although i don´t think i´ll use it too much, but the SOT is shorter again as it was with 4.4.4, and battery life proved to be more important than bling bling. So i´m pretty sure i´ll go back to my good old X-Note KitKat again. The MM´s infamous permission management system is bull****, (i couldn´t play Angry Birds 2, because i didn´t give the game a permission to check my photo albums????), so after trying all the available "post-KitKat" systems, i´m really skeptical about the android 7.

For work email and calendar. To be able to access my company's exchange server I need to provide them with insane permissions over my phone, the price of BYOD. When I do it within the Knox environment they are contained to it and cannot access or impact the rest of my phone. Worse case is that they delete the Knox container if they are trigger happy (most likely they're not, but I'm glad Knox allows me to not take this chance).

Its similar to what BlackBerry has on BB10 devices. If you were connected to a "BES server" all the enterprise items are contained in their own "side" of the phone with a password. If you lose your phone and it doesn't have any form of security password, someone could access your personal info, but not the company's. From there work items are separated and then the company can blow away that "work" side if you leave.. Taking their info away from you securely from you and leaving your personal info alone. Works fantastic in a BYOD environment, but most of us here on XDA will never use KNOX
In your opinion will this phone community grow bigger far as amount of Roms? I never owned a note before. In regards to Tmobile current offering of phones. This phone is the best hands down far as features and build quality. I checked out all of the Newest phones on Tmobile and researched xda rooting for each phone. The Note/S8 had the most so far. Does knox really handicap this phone that much far as this?
I will be getting this phone next Friday. The quality and features of this phone outweigh it all for me. Just bonus if this phone root/rom community will get big. Owned an LG G5 and G4 by far the worst build quality I've ever dealt with. Will never buy an LG after that.
OnePlus 5T doesn't offer payment plans. Also doesn't have all the premium features of this phone. I feel like rooting and roms are dien. Over the years it seems like all phones have had less and less.
Years back, rooting gave you the possibility of doing many things, now, the newer versions of android incorporate many options, so the need of root has become less urgent, the prices of flagships nowadays are really high, so, less people are willing to risk/loose their hard earned devices, so yes, littler development these days
What @winol wrote is absolutely correct.
But I'm sure, latest if the warranty is ended more and more people will Root their devices. As well if the Rom support from Samsung side is ended. then you will need Root to flash higher android versions.
And the device is absolutely great. So I'm sure more and more people will buy it (maybe a used one), and also more developer will get this phone and develop Rom's for it.

Yeah the days of rooting and custom roms are drawing to a close. As stated, things that required root in the past are now baked in. The risk to reward ratio is world's apart. And with the new security and biometrics, you now lose functionality with root. I actually enjoy the stock note 8 experience inside and out. I don't see anything I would want to root and change.
i dunno what y'all are talking about but when we get the ability to do a system wide adblock and on youtube, we gonna need root.

I got to agree with the above post. And add that root is the only way to get rid of the carrier provided bloat-ware and spying crapulance. So I cannot use Samsung Pay - no loss. Worth it for me not to have all the embedded spy-ware crap that pops up on my wife's unrooted phone constantly.
But I am conflicted as the Renovate ROM developers dropped support for their fine ROM for the Note 8 for some unstated reason but keep on with the S8. Very sad.
Don't misunderstand me. My phone is rooted since October where I bought it. I only want to show how the most note 8 owners are thinking. There are also many new android users where the note 8 is there first device. Or they switched from iPhones to Samsung. The most of them are not interested in rooting for now, or not even know what that is.
I have the exynos version and I rooted 2 weeks after I bought it.

Why unstated reason? He wrote the reason. He haven't time to support 3 devices (S7, S8, note 8). He's support is only paused until the next major update. And that's Oreo.
I'm sure the reason is, there are many more S7, S8/+ users then note 8 users.
Ok, there is a security update released since a few days. But also other developer's updated only the safety patch. Nothing more. I'm sure, you also don't get more support from Samsung in the next time until they will release Oreo. So also stock Rom users don't will get more support from Samsung directly (until Oreo release) .
I have tested some Rom's till now and the RICE Rom for me is still the best.

I can see where all you guys are coming from. The risk is high, no one wants a $1k hard bricked paper weight. Stock has come far from the crap days. The battery life has gotten pretty close to Roms. I think you all are correct on Root/Rom dien breed. I think it will get to a point where you will only see it on OnePlus/Pixel/Few others.
But I do have to agree on pro root guy's here on a few things. Being able to rid yourself of bloatware is pretty awesome. The Adblockers for root work better. The UI is also better and customization. I know there's a bunch of Roms out there. Say for instance Res remix is UI/Custom heaven.
Appreciate everybody's input on this thread! But Note 8 you're to sexy to pass up, even without a large Rom collection Untill OnePlus has premium features and look. Also a payment plan! Judging from threads on xda and everybody input here. The Note has pretty decent size community for Rom/Root and will probably get bigger.

Which note 8 version is the one to get if we are looking to root, rom, & unlock bootloader?
First phone ever that I haven't rooted.
Secure Folder, S-Pay and S-Health are features worth it to me to not root.
The ROMs available here are not that enticing either. No offence meant to the devs, it's just my opinion man.
For ad blocking, I got a beta-test code for Adguard. Works pretty much perfectly.

I used to root and flash everything I had as well. Started on the note 2, then 3 and 4. I came from the Note 4. I still haven't seen any real benefits of rooting the Note 8. My reasoning before was for free wifi hotspot. But I have that now on my stock 8.

The UI and customization is better on Roms. Being able to rid self of ads cool as well. Also being able to get rid of bloatware. But I can understand where your coming from.
I am kinda on same boat as you. Rooting and Roming is dien it seems. Wish it wasn't The Note 8 Sexy with Root or not Root thou

This is the first phone I have not rooted and have no intention to root.
Reasons why I generally root -
* Can block ads on the default (Chrome) browser. To work around, I use Firefox instead of Chrome. I also hear Samsung's own browser is good and also has adblocking, a lot of people swear by it, but I haven't yet tried it much. I'm eager to see how Google implements it in Q2 2018.
* Could turn screen upside down. This helps a lot if you use (wired) headsets or charger while using the phone in portrait mode while lying down. IMO this should be part of stock! But this alone is not worth it for me to root.
Beware you shouldn't root this phone just for experimenting.
WARNING Rooting breaks Knox, which disables a few things few things irreversibly. As of now, you won't be able to use Samsung Pay / Android Pay, Samsung Secure Files, even if you 'unroot'.
You should root if you want to try out new ROM's, and you are okay with loosing secure features like Android Pay / Samsung Pay forever.

I'm wondering if Oreo build is out for the unlocked version, one where you get the pure Samsung firmware without any carrier third parties.

It used to be that way, certainly in Europe. I expect that providers in USA have made deal with Sammy to wait with the FW updates for the unbranded/ unlocked until the providers have pushed out their updates, this to lure customers to buy phones and services from the big providers.

Oreo for the Snapdragon is not out yet. Just the Exynos. The Oreo builds for the Snapdragon all come from leaked OTA zips. It has not been officially released so no Oreo ODIN files exist for the N8.

Well I wouldn't say they don't exist at all. There's an xda thread on how to flash N8 to Oreo. Issue is the build is carrier build so you get bloatware and boot animations even on an unlocked phone. But if you meant the unlocked version, then yeah I don't think there's a build out yet.

I would say that. The thread for flashing Oreo involved using ODIN to flash a specific version of NOUGAT. Then, as I stated, you use a leaked OTA zip to update to Oreo.
So no, ODIN files for OREO are NOT available.

It used to be that way, certainly in Europe. I expect that providers in USA have made deal with Sammy to wait with the FW updates for the unbranded/ unlocked until the providers have pushed out their updates, this to lure customers to buy phones and services from the big providers.

This is actually pretty upsetting. I went out of my way, avoiding all the carriers great buy one get one deals, to buy direct from Samsung thinking I was going to get priority updates. I really honestly would have bet money on getting Oreo before the carrier Note 8's did.
Naivety at its best I guess. Meanwhile I've been running Android P on my Pixel 2 XL for almost a month now. My Note 8 will never see Android P, at least not while I own it. Kinda sad.
I wouldn't expect Oreo until near when the Note 9 comes out (in the US)

No, that's months away, and Oreo is already rolling out for Note 8. Definitely won't be that long.

Yeah, I agree. The sufferings of capitalism and putting money before costumers.
Anyhow, I don't get why S8 and S8+ are getting updates and Note 8 isn't. Like I haven't even heard of carriers actually releasing Note 8 OTA for Oreo yet. On the one hand, I want to be optimistic and think that's because they're implementing newer features in N8 version, or perhaps releasing Oreo 8.1. On the other, I think that's not true and they just wanna piss us off. N8 is the latest Note flagship, they gotta take care of it!

If you took a moment to search the forums before commenting that Samsung is not taking care of note8 users it would be awesome. Just because it's a flagship does not mean it will get updates first.
Note8 series is not the best selling popular Samsung phone. S series is the main bread and butter for Samsung.
Past couple of years I have been following Samsung and it's update cycle, it's always S series first and then N series.
Just have patience and again learn to use the search function sometimes. This discussion has happened multiple times and answer always is if you need immediate updates get Apple/pixel phone. If you can live with decent delayed updates, go for s series.
If you care for good hardware and build but ok update speed (updates will come for sure) note series helps .

I am just making a point that people need to search the forums before posting any comments. Also no one should feel entitled that since its a flagship or they paid big bucks, that the manufacturer should drop everything and cater to their needs. Samsung never promised faster updates than s series. It has always been like that.
None the less everyone is entitled to their opinion. You can read it or choose to ignore it and move on.
Got Oreo (OTA) to my unlocked Note 8 (SM-N950F) yesterday - so at least in Europe it is out and deliveries started.
I could be wrong but.. I think this at 1st was about a PHONE. I guess life is a slap in the face to some.. they express it to all..
I manually put it on my phone. Securty update is March 1st. Never had one problem. Runs great...

I doubt you have the unlocked version one. Is it bloatware free and boot animations free?

I haven't seen much work done on ASUS phones for LineageOS ROM releases. I particularly couldn't find a ROM for the first ROG Phone. Now, after much waiting, the ROG Phone II is available. What needs to be done in order to be able to flash the ASUS ROG Phone II with a custom ROM?
I would like to upgrade my phone, but doing it without an alternative to the default OS is a no-go, for me.

Nope. Asus doesn't send out units to devs, like other companies do. If they did, we probably would have many roms.

I do have a person who could 100% get lineage on it, but we would need to him a device.
TBH, I'm a custom rom flasher too! BUT, there's so many options to customize ROG II that I don't feel the need to flash other roms - for now at least...
Also note, we have air triggers which make the rom even harder to code...

100% false. They sampled out a bunch of Zenfone 6, including to arnovag82, the entire reason the gcam port works on rog phone ii to begin with.

My point, is Google should make a phone like this. New pixel 4 6gb ram...2.0ufs, and 64gb storage. What a joke
So, I don't really care about the accessories. If I could just get an /e/ or LineageOS port, I'm satisfied with just having the powerful hardware. I've thought long and hard about it, but there's just absolutely no way I'd run a phone with its default OS.
If I could afford it, I'd certainly try to see what I could do about getting another one, but I'd feel awkward about not having any guarantees.
Is there no way I could get a walkthrough for how I can accomplish this custom ROM on my own?
Right now, there's no ROM development going for this device. Still you (developers) can build ROMs because this device has stock vendor source which can be used with any customized System OS.
There's also unofficial TWRP for which you can use it to modify the stock ROG 2 system as your liking. Like disabling & removing system bloat apps, flashing Magisk root, using Edxposed framework & GravityBox, etc.
ROM development has halted because devs dont want to waste their time working on Android 9 when ASUS has been beta testing Android 10 when developers received their phones. They are waiting for Android 10 kernel source code.
You can see this by checking their GitHubs, LineageOS was in development 3 weeks ago, its up to ASUS to finish their update first.

That is the general idea.
So your are not prepared to put your money where your month was ( Google should have made this phone) then just chill and enjoy until. I mean whats the point of moaning about something someone hasn't not done, when you can not do it yourself.
From my opinion the system comes with the phone is good enough because it provides the stock android option. Especially the android q updated recently.
