Gmail LED notification, but no vibrate, in vibrate mode. - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

So I finally returned from a two-year Apple iPhone 6s Plus. Got the Note 8. But I have to get used to Android again. Please help me out.
My phone is on Vibrate mode all the time.
I want the notification LED to work when I get an email in Gmail, but I don't want the phone to vibrate when I get an email. I used to be able to do this on my Note Edge, but now, I cannot get the right combination of settings to make it work on the Note 8.
I've tried different combination of settings in the Notification sections in conjunction with the settings under my account in Gmail. So far, I can only get the LED to blink if I do NOT turn on "Show silently" in the App notification section, and under my account setting: inbox sound and vibrate/sound/beep once. Even though I specifically in the same section, uncheck the "vibrate" box, the phone still vibrates when receiving an email.
Anyone has the right combo to make this work? Or this is a bug of some kind?
Thanks.

i dont think you can turn that off

I've been suffering with this since the s8+. Note hasn't been any different. Curious why the app settings get overridden.

From what I've read it's a bug, I don't want my phone to vibrate or play a notification from gmail just want the led to flash.
So I've downloaded a silent notification "sound" found in the zedge app and then choose this as a sound notification in gmail and it's working fine

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it, but it still vibrated because I am already in vibrate mode (even though I unchecked vibrate in my Gmail setting).

Note 8 Gmail/LED/Vibrate Issue
I think I have your answer. With the Note 8, you can set vibration intensity for notifications to 0 or the lowest setting. This basically eliminates any noticeable vibration when you receive an email yet activates LED, as long as you download silent ringer and turn both sound and vibrate on.

Really stupid question about SMS settings

I've just flashed Phoenix 5.2 on my phone, but for some reason if my phone is in silent mode I get absolutely no vibration when I get a SMS message. I've checked the sound settings and the settings within the messages app itself but for the life of me I can't find where to turn vibrations on! If anyone could help me, that'd be fantastic!
Thank you!

If it's on silent mode, it is set so that no vibration notifications come in. You need to put your phone in vibration mode
Is there a vibration mode at all? I'm using the silent mode that you can get to by using either:
1. Sideloader
2. Top menu
3. Lock screens
When I used to be on Cognition, the silent mode automagically put everything in vibrate mode (to my memory)... Or I must've changed a setting somewhere to make it vibrate instead of making no sound/vibrations whatsoever.
Menu>Settings>sound>vibration > ALWAYS or ONLY IN Silent or ONLY not silent
if that just isnt doin it for you try the app "SMS pop up" it will take over the notifacations at the top and you can control the vibration how you want, with reminders if you dont answer right away and pop up windows with the txt, with privacy mode if lock screen is on, custom ring tones for custom people ect...
if you use sms pop up disable the regular sms notifacation.
SMS app> menu button>settings> notifacation

Thanks for that! I've also found out what the problem was! I've had "ALWAYS" on all the time!
The silent mode in Sideloader and Top menu makes it vibrate, but the Lock Screen's "Silent Mode" makes the whole phone just go mute.
I've had the Lock Screen set to the new 'Rotary Lock' that's available in Phoenix 5.2... and it seems to be only that Lock Screen's Silent Mode that causes this problem.
Silent Mode with the normal Android Lock Screen works fine (with vibrations and etc)

[Q] Question regarding notifications

I am new to HTC One, coming from S4.
Is Sense lockscreen supposed to show notifications? Light up when something happnes, like a new sms or email? I don't see this on my phone. I know there is a LED on the phone also, it lights up when I'm charing the phone, but only then. I see in the settings that there is a setting for led, it is on, but I don't see any.
How is this supposed to work on the One? Do I have to install DynamicNotifications or do you recommend anything else?
Also, I don't find any function for "Do not disturb" which can be setup to automatically silence the phone at nighttime, except for contacts I choose to whitelist. Like "Blocking-Mode" on Samsung. There isn't any?

1. Yes it will show Notifications. If you need that info, go to Settings, Security, Notification Settings and enable the appropriate ones you need...
2. The LED will blink based on the notifications you will select in the "Notification light" option in settings again. It doesn't blink for long, the blink happens only for a brief time....This is to make sure it doesn't dry your battery...
Cheers!!!
Hit thanks only if this helped you
Hmm... I cannot get this to work. When using the stock sms-app I get no notifications at all, no sound, no popup, nothing on the lock-screen. Nothing. In the app all notifications are set to on. In settings everything is set to notify on the lock screen and led is on.
When using ChompSMS, I get notification sound, but nothing on the lock-screen, except when I use the Dynamic Notifications app. There's no light in the led though.
When using gmail I get the sound, but nothing on lock screen and no led-blink. If I use Dynamic Notifications I get notified on the lock-screen, but no led-blink.
I am on 4.3 and pure stock.
How is this supposed to work? Coming from Samsung, this is very confusing. It simply won't work.
The led lights when charging though, but never on anything else.

[Q] Vibrate mode overrides individual app settings

Just picked up a Droid Turbo. I noticed when I have the phone in vibrate mode, I get a double buzz for EVERY notification on my phone, even on apps where I've specifically made sure to not enable vibrate.
For example, in the Messaging app, I've selected a notification sound, enabled notifications, but did not check the box next to vibrate. When I get a text, I get the double vibrate.
Is there something I'm missing, or is this a Moto bug/"feature"?
Unless you disabled notification sounds as well for the apps you are mentioning, you are describing the expected functionality for Android. Vibrate mode replaces all notification sounds with a vibrate patter. It does not simply disable sounds and leave only vibration preferences active.
Sent from my XT1254 using XDA Free mobile app
Strange, I've had an LG and an HTC in the past and both behaved that way, where when vibrate mode was selected, it responded to each apps preferences.
Example scenario.
Gmail vibrate on notify, play sound on notify.
Google plus no vibration on notify, play sound on notify.
When in vibrate mode, id get buzzed for gmail as well as a notification icon, but for google plus id only get the notification icon.

Possible to have vibration on notification ?

It's hard to understand why there is no LED on the Nokia 8, not necessarily a color one like on my trusty Lenovo P2, even a white one would do the trick for notifications...
Anyway I don't like audio on notifications so I was hoping to have the phone vibrate but that doesn't seem possible, am I missing something ? Thanks for any help !
Just turn Notification/Phone ring Volume to 0 should be vibration only

That would also mute phone rings, which I doubt OP wants.
@webvan You can manually turn of notification sounds for each app by long-pressing an app icon and tap: App Info -> App notifications -> Messages -> Sound -> None.
Thanks, yes I'd still like the phone to ring !
Will try the app by app setting.
ok so I tried that method and you can indeed dig into the notifications and when they are set to a high or above importance you can activate "vibrate" and deactivate "sounds". Thanks !

Seems crazy that 10 years into Android development there is no option to only make your phone vibrate when a notification arrives instead of making a sound !

May I ask what apps you are trying to turn off sound notifications? For Instant Messaging apps like Viber, Signal, Telegram, etc. I can easily turn the sound notification OFF and leave the vibration option ON. Some apps don't have those options simply because they don't send and/or display notifications.
It's strange to hear you can't do that. Try exploring all the options around the Notification Settings in each app.
Oops, had edited my message in the meantime! Yes I found that the trick is to set importance of the notification to high or above to get control of the sound+vibration settings. All good now!

App notifications

For some reason I am not getting notifications from one app except one time last night. it's enabled within the app and when I go to settings >> app >> notifications, everything is turned on. is there another setting somewhere I'm missing?
Anyone has any idea how to solve it? tried reinstalling, deleting app cache, deleting partition cache, but nothing helped.
YouTube Vanced is doing that to me
It's frustrating and I also noticed gmail doesn't always alert me of a new e-mail when the screen is off, even now I used the phone and gmail notification doesn't show at all. what is happening with this phone? never had this problem before.
GMail has been flaky for me on some other devices before.
I wonder if it's Samsung's "put apps to sleep" feature that's causing some of this.
I noticed the same thing after switching back from energy saving mode to optimized mode.
On the energy saving mode I only reduced the CPU speed but still no notifications, so I went back to the optimized mode.
Just checked the sleeping apps and my problematic apps aren't listed there.
I'm always on "optimized" power mode since I got it, I even put them in 'apps not optimized' but it changed nothing.
it's bad enough there's no notification LED but not being alerted when there's something new is a downgrade for me.
Since its on topic, any way to stop the stock messaging app from waking the screen with its notifications?

Try going to Settings >> apps >> messages >> new messages >> click on 'lock screen' & select 'don't show notifications'. do the same with 'General notifications' and see if it works.
I've found Pie very intermittent with app notifications count badges, from S9 beta to S10 now

I hope they fix it if it really is pie, the problem is I'm not getting ANY notifications from one specific app and I should be getting many a day.
I am having the same issue, hoping for a fix.

that stops the notifications from showing on the lock screen all together.
back on thread here - I was only receiving gmail notifications in batches and only when i'd wake the screen and unlock the phone. I turned off battery optimization and it seems to have corrected itself. Any app that you are not getting notifications for, make sure they are not being battery optimized.

Oh you mean like whatsapp messages wake up the screen, no idea how to change it to get a notification without the screen.
Yes I already tried placing these apps in the 'not optimized' list but it didn't change anything. gmail is still random & the other completely mute.

That thing to turn off battery optimization doesn't do a thing. Have never worked for any Androids I've had. It doesn't give instant notifications for apps not being optimized and the battery is not becoming any better if every damn app is being optimized either. I don't understand why the setting is there if it doesn't do a thing.
Does anyone face the issue that WhatsApp calls do not turn on the screen when screen is off? When I receive a WhatsApp call, I hear the ringtone, but the screen remains off, once I double tap to wake up the screen, I see the WhatsApp incoming call interface. Normally, incoming WhatsApp calls automatically turn on the screen and show the incoming call interface...
