Anyone flash the unlocked Note8's firmware on T-Mobile? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Wondering if anyone has been able to flash the unlocked firmware onto the T-Mobile Note8.
Previous to my Note8 I had a Galaxy s8 which was flashed with the U1 firmware using Odin...
I looked and didn't any post/thread about this, however my apologies if I missed it -- if said thread/post exists where it explains how-to I'd LOVE to see it.

Yup. I did it. Same process as the s8.

What's the benefit of doing this

No bloat from carrier, no boot sound, "stock" Samsung. You'll lose Wi-Fi calling depending on your carrier, you'll lose rcs, 256Q, and 4x4 mimo.
Overall I found the tmobile firmware better with just disabling the bloat through adhell.

For me that's too much to lose.

@all I appreciate the responses. I'm gonna try it I'm about an hour and report my experience.

I can't find much T-mo bloatware on mine. What else besides T-mobile, T-mo TV, visual voice mail and device unlock is there? I think carrier IQ is gone for good, anything else?

Will I trip Knox if I flash the unlocked firmware on my T-Mobile? or will anything change in the download menu showing unofficial status?

it will not trip knox and its reversible if you don't like the unlocked firmware. I went back t mobile firmware and used bk disabler to disable the bloat and crap running in the background. all in all you'll have about an extra GB taken up on internal storage which isn't much on a 64 GB device IMO.

With unlocked tmobile N8, if I flash unlocked fw, then device should work on Verizon?

hello - i also have this question. (sorry noob here).
I got my tmobile note 8 unlocked by paying off the the pending amount and followed the Tmobile's device unlock procedure. But even after that the phone did not work with Verizon's network.
Reading BlueFox721's post for carrier switching (link)
Is my understanding right that, first I have to follow the Carrier Switching procedure and then I can choose between 2 options
(opt 1) flash a specific carrier FW or
(opt 2) i can choose to flash the phone with the unlocked firmware.
Am i also right that flashing the phone with a carrier specifc FW provides some advantages that are specific to that carrier's network setup (features such as wifi calling, 4x4 mimo) and that also adds some of the bloatware from that carrier.
appreciate your help in advance.

Yes

Dumb question. If the device is carrier locked, say to tmobile, will flashing unlocked firmware on it unlock it as well? or is it based on imei?

Nope, unlocked FW won't sim unlock the phone. And if you want to use Tmobile's unlock app you need to use it with Tmobile stock FW.

Doesn't unlock firmware support 256 qam and 4x4 mimo? It has band 46

Unlocked S8 -> Tmobile

Hello, I'm a tmobile customer that just purchased an unlocked galaxy s8 from the Samsung website. I'm wondering if going to the store and getting the tmobile firmware on it installed is really necessary. I mainly want to do this because of the software updates, but then I thought the the unlocked version might get updates from a different source? Am I right? I'm sorry about this being such a general question, but I just want to do what's best for my new phone. Would you recommend me installing this firmware? Or should I just keep the stock unlocked firmware it came with? Are there any drawbacks associated with not installing the tmobile firmware on it?
EDIT:
To start, will Tmobile even do this in the first place? I'm totally clueless whether they offer installing their software on customer phones or not.
Thank you.
Hi there. Unfortunately, you are going to be really hard pressed to find a T-Mobile rep anywhere that could/would flash firmware w/ Odin. Not saying that there aren't some reps out their that don't know about this stuff (there are a lot that really have no clue though), but this is well outside of what most of them are trained for, plus Odin is only supposed to be used by Samsung. Also, historically (at least the last couple of years), for whatever reason Samsung's unlocked US models have been getting updates slower than the carrier versions, which really doesn't make any sense because there is less to go through to get them updated. That being said, there are several threads in the T-Mobile S8 forum here as well as the general S8 forum dedicated to carrier switching, which can guide you in turning your unlocked model into a T-Mobile model, for all intents and purposes.

The guy that replied first is really correct! T-Mobile store won't flash any phone, don't go beyond simple troubleshooting. It is easier to fly to Mars, than talk about flashing a device with rep. I do hope there are some T-Mobile reps that do really know about flashing, but I just haven't seen one yet.
I am with Unlocked S8 and use it on T-Mobile. I don't have any signal specific issues for example and features such as WiFi Calling, Band 12 and VoLTE all work well. There are few thing that flashing to T-Mobile firmware could give you:
Video calling(to specific phones only)
Advanced Messaging(believe other phone needs to support it)
DIGITS service will be built into the phone dialer.
I was also debating about doing it, but all 3 mentioned features are not wildly available and don't work across all devices and networks. On top of that you will get few T-Mobile apps pre-installed + Lookout app + T-Mobile logo when booting up the phone.
We can flash practically anytime we want, so I would suggest you to wait and see how Samsung will treat unlocked devices and how fast updates will arrive. If T-Mobile will do them much better than Samsung, then I will flash myself or when those 3 features above will work across all devices.
Sorry for reviving this thread, but my unlocked s8 gets slower upload and download speeds than my friends tmobile s8, we are both in NYC and he's getting 100mbps and I'm getting 30-40mbps. I assume they also have specific settings hardbaked in their rom that allows for optimized carrier usage?

the t mobile firmware comes with 4x4 MIMO and 256QAM. which leads to better signal and faster download speeds.
Can I flash just the modem or CSC to get the benefits without flashing the whole tmobile rom?

This is a question I'd like the answer to. I'd like to keep all the Samsung default software features but get RCS, which is the most important thing, and one of the main reasons I'm still using my LG G6.

i think you'll need the whole firmware to be able to use RCS and the tmob features. i personally think the tmob firmware is better since it has 4x4 MIMO and 256QAM enabled. so better signal and service

I don't care about any of that. I value the Samsung unbranded experience more. All I want from the Tmo FW is RCS.
Alternately, if they ever support it using the unlocked S8 FW, i'll switch back to my S8 in a heartbeat. My G6 seems to get tons better battery life anyway for some reason.
Can someone provide a link to a thread for flashing the Unlocked s8 to T-Mobile?

I believe you have to use the "flashing unlocked firmware" because the prince's version of the ODIN will bypass the ROM checksum and let you flash any variant you want. if you use the normal ODIN and you are going from unlocked to t-mobile (950U1 to 950U) ROM it will fail.
I used to be on the unlocked but now I'm running t-mobile rom to have multi-line baked in to the native dialer. and my service provider SW ver. shows TMB/TMB/XAA
All is good and I'm happy with the ROM after few days the battery life seems the same as the unlocked version.
i just want to know if i can keep the bloatware free and just flash the modem from tmobile firmware.
i just want wifi calling, volte, 4x4 MIMO and 256QAM. i dont care much for the multi line feature cause not useful on my end and idk about rcs because the person on the other end needs to have it and i dont really see it as useful.
lol s7 bloatware free firmware was so easy to flash compared to this xD
im running the att variant but im sure all the hardware is the same. so i dont see why the unlocked firmware wouldnt support this out of the box.

When I had my S7 Edge I was able to mix and match different ROM with different modem files ie I would be on the unlocked ROM with the tmobile modem and was able to use the unlocked firmware with t-mobile radios. This is what you want but I have not tried it with the my S8 you can try if it dont work use the prince's ODIN to take you back to stock.

Correct, but it also works the other way around. Anytime you want to change variant you must use the modified version of ODIN as it bypass the checksum or the flash will fail.
Thanks Peeps!

[Q] Sprint VS Unlocked : Which One Should I Keep ?

It's really all personal preference....but both devices can be flashed with either firmware...same...I have flashed the SPR, XAS, and ran the unlocked firmware XAA...I'm sticking with the unlocked firmware XAA because of the download booster but either device can do any of the firmware for you...
Can you show me the link for the Unlocked Firmware download ? It was recently taken down.. So I can basically keep the sprint and debloat it with no problems ?
Just registered with Sammobile and downloaded the Unknown XAS for my Sprint (SM-N950U).. So the Sprint bloatware automatically will be deleted, per following the download instructions ?

If the bloatware is all you're trying to remove you can do that with either Package Disabler Pro or BK Disabler. I use the latter but either gives you the ability to debloat or disable pretty much anything on the phone whether it be on the system side or the installed side. Most people get Unlocked for the freedom to take their device to any carrier without having to use their branded phones or for going overseas and not getting killed by carrier overages. But if it's just bloatware that can easily be removed with either of the options above and you won't need root either. I removed a lot of mine and between that and changing my animations to .5 in Developer Options my phone FLIES.

If you use the modified Prince Comsy Odin you should be able to.
Make sure you edit the Odin config file's UMS/Patch setting from 0 to 1.
Load as follows:
BL file in BL slot,
AP file in AP slot,
CP file in CP slot,
CSC file in CSC Slot (not HOME_CSC),
UMS slot empty....the userdata file is in the AP for the Unlocked software.
Hope this helps,

I want to get the note 8 unlocked from bestbuy and use it on sprint as well. I've been away from android for 2 years. If I flash the sprint firmware will I get regular sprint updates or will I have to manually update the firmware when it's released. I mainly want to do the sprint firmware bc of the visual voicemail(I didn't like google voice with my unlocked nexus 6) or what other options do I have? I've been reading around and the unlocked version has wifi-calling built in correct? Sorry for so many questions didn't know if I should start a new thread or not.

The BETA is only available for N960U1 models. If you have the T-Mobile branded Note 9, then you have a N960U.
A way around that is to use ODIN to flash the N960U1 firmware. Then the beta should be available to you.
I currently have an ATT N960U, running the N960U1 firmware, on T-Mobile and I got the beta notification earlier today and signed up.
Even if you don't get into the beta program. You can still get the beta OTAs from firmware.science. You'll still need to ODIN the U1 firmware, of course.
My Samsung+ is white background and is not offering me the beta. Unlocked device bought straight from Samsung / Verizon SIM.
Edit: Install the beta Samsung+ apk from here https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/samsu...msung-11-2-3-0-android-apk-download/download/ and then it will offer it to you

No. This is NOT for U firmware. And it's not even for ARJ7. You need to use ODIN to flash the ARJ9 build for the U1. N960U1SQU1AEJ9. Then either sign up for the beta through the Samsung+ app, or download the update from firmware.science.
Also it doesn't matter if you're carrier locked or not. And yes U1 will work just fine with ATT, but you'll lose WiFo calling and VoLTE.

I was able to get AT&T wifi calling and volte, messages sync, etc. working in my AT&T N960U on U1 firmware by simply flashing the ATT ARJ7 CSC. The only issue here is that you will lose software updates on the device, they will all need to be downloaded and flashed manually in recovery as an OTA update zip.

Like you said it breaks updates, and it would probably jack up the beta as well.
If I open Spotify (or Amazon music) and start playing music and then put the phone down, when I pick it up and try turning the screen back on it doesn't work, just restarts. Even if I don't press the power button and just turn it on with the lift to wake feature the same thing happens. The Iris scanner light turns on and off a few times like it's trying to work normally but doesn't actually. I sent in the system logs with the Samsung members app, any ideas how to fix it?*
I'm on the newest pie beta on the Unlocked us version.
Turning off lift to wake doesn't help.
What did they do Location options ?
In Oreo or prior one could use just the device GPS for location accuracy. I think that option is no longer available? It appears to be just either On or Off. Nothing in between.

Still didn't offer it. I probably need to use Odin to flash the U1 first, right?

Hi,
I'm interested in the US unlocked U1 version, direct from Samsung Beta update.
Not interested in all the other rooted and/or country versions.
I got the beta downloaded but not installing till I hear from users first,
Thanks again,
Ken

The 160+ page thread called "Note 9 Pie Alpha/Beta."
If you want the U1 firmware beta straight from Samsung, then you need to be on ARJ9 for the U1. Then sign up for the beta through the Samsung+ app.

Of course you do. You have to be on ARJ9 for the U1 before you can get the beta. It's only for U.

Looking for advice on rooting exynos pie

It would be helpful to know if it is possible to root and install twrp on the latest firmware (sept 1st security update - pie) or if something changed to make the method described here incompatible. I have a 950F exynos with vietnam csc. I rooted both my Note 2 and Note 4, so i have some experience with rooting.
I am ready to root now as i want to install mods to improve the camera, but don't want to face a nightmare of a boot loop and ending up having to reinstall everything and still have no root, no twrp, or a bricked phone. I posted on the root thread but it seems dead. Can anyone with similar firmware who has recently rooted successfully shed light on the status of the root method? I'm on N950XXXS7DSHC. Thanks!
I have no problems at all with mine. N950F (Same as yours) converted to T-Mobile US N950U basically. While still having unlocked sim (Unlocked for any carrier), No bloatware and I did not do any camera mods. I have hads every note from the Note 3 to Note 9. So i have no issues with the stock camera. Only i changed was my CSC so i can get video calling, Caller ID etc. Still stock firmware 9.0, Don't care about Spay (Use google pay if i had to) and that's pretty much it. If you do root good luck.
Thanks for the response. Did you first root on the update i mentioned? In the root thread i read comments from people trying to root the first time after recent updates who got problems, boot loops. My question is to know if these updates change the root situation. When did you root your phone?

I am wondering the same thing. Isn't the N950U have a snapdragon SoC?

Yes it does, I had a S8 that was a U1 and It was snapdragon. And from what I've read the software isn't interchangeable.

Sorry for the late response guys. I did not convert my phone from a n950f to n950u. It still is a n950f exynos version not the Snapdragon one. only thing I have in the phone that is modified and I guess I'm the one reason I rooted the phone is so I can have the T-Mobile firmware on there cause I use MetroPCS (T-Mobile mvno). I still have two dual SIM function and I still have the international unlocked version compared to the US version where you have to get it unlocked or you have to pay to unlock or whichever. If that explains it.

"if I didn't root or modified a phone I wouldn't be able to get it to work on MetroPCS or T-Mobile hundred percent correctly like I wanted it to. I could of left it how it came (stock) but I had to in a way root it to get past certain things anyways. And at the end of the day I don't mind a rooted or modified phone.

The question I have is how did you do this? Also I am on cricket which is a at&t mvno and I want to be on there firmware, mine says that it is from uae and everything even Bixby is in European so weather is spoken in C° not F°. There are other stuff that irritates me.

I changed the CSC to T-Mobile. So I can have things like video calling (Kinda buggy sometimes), VoLTE (Which works just like a Metro phone (HD sometimes HD+), And my boot logo is T-Mo. Why do you wanna be on there firmware? You have to search up the CSC for AT&T so you turn your UAE phone into a US in a way. Why don't you just go into the weather app or bixby and switch to Fahrenheit (You know you can do that)

Please excuse my persistence or lack of understanding but I'm not clear on your answer to the question I raised originally. You say your phone is the same as mine but not explicitly that you rooted after updating to the same firmware I'm running (N950XXXS7DSHC). I do know it was possible to root from earlier firmwares. If I hadn't updated and read anecdotal reports of serious problems trying to do it from the current firmware, I would have rooted my phone right away.
I know also that people make mistakes in rooting frequently, so reports of problems are not evidence that the root method doesn't work. Even with serious problems, there are often workarounds. The problem is the Dr. Ketan root thread seems inactive, so the last comments there all report problems that weren't answered, nor was my own question that I also posted there. I would just like confirmation from anyone who has rooted after updating to the current firmware. Did you root your phone on N950XXXS7DSHC? Sorry again if you thought you answered that.
Good question. Sorry
@Dumbo53 I was also looking for advice about this, but since no one seemed to really be giving a clear answer, I went with this. It's basically stock without all the issues of a custom ROM, while still having root. I wasn't willing to risk updating and not being able to root on the latest, so this was a good compromise.

Root for Samsung S10 5g (Sprint) 977p question.

is there a root method for my device? Like the title describes, this is the model of my phone and yes the OEM unlock option is available. If one of you lovely people could point me in the right direction please, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Use the same method all the other s10+ users use lmao..
I mean all you need really is patched firmware then flash in ODIN.
If you want to get adventurous you could try the closest models twrp.img but if it blows up then it's not my fault.
Theres also twrp threads and multiple twrp groups on telegram that you're probably better suited to get your help there.

Oo Yes please. Do you have a download link somewhere?
I'm guessing the process would be to update to stock Q first and then OEM unlock, flash twrp, etc?

Hey op could you post a link for the correct phone for the sprint 5g, I'm assuming it needs to be unlocked. I just can't find anything on rooting sprint phones anymore. I'm considering switching carriers. What the best carrier for rooted custom development for phones?

I'd love to hit you up on telegram, your considered a master on these forums. What's the best phone available for sprint with custom development? I uauallly choose a phone for that reason but I got the sprint gs10 and the bootloader is locked. Thanks for your reply. I'm even considering switching carriers since sprint sucks in PA. Which carrier has best custom development and what phone? Like the one plus or something?

i have no idea.. it doesnt really matter since all the same phones are typically locked on other carriers.. i.e. u cant get a unlocked g975u on sprint or any other carrier..
i also have no idea what the "best carrier" would be for you..
All Great Minds,
Sorry for posting a question unrelated to rooting here, but I assume those who can root this phone would know something about its hardware well.
I was so excited to learn SM-G977P's bootloader can be unlocked until I realized Sprint is a CDMA company. My carrier is T-Mobile, which is based on GSM. Then I came across several guys on eBay selling this model and claiming it would work with T-Mobile/AT&T.
When a phone is built for a CDMA company like Sprint, how does it even work with a GSM network like AT&T or T-Mobile, even if it is carrier unlocked? Unless of course the hardware on this phone supports both technologies. Can someone please confirm if this is a dual band phone?
Secondly, if the hardware to support GSM is there, after it is unlocked from Sprint, do I have to flash a new ROM for T-Mobile in order to get on their GSM network?
Thank you
