Nokia 8 physical buttons hard to press? - Nokia 8 Questions & Answers

Hello,
I got my Nokia 8 a few days ago and I don't know if it's the same for everyone but my volume up/down buttons are very hard to press depending on the angle I use to push on them. It's alright when there is no case on the phone, but with one of my cases it's very hard to press and with the other one I just can't use these buttons at all.
I was wondering if it was a fault with my phone or if they're all made like this.
Thanks for the help!

Hmm, at my side all is fine. For me it's nearly the same as at my HTC 10.

Yes, my powerbutton has to be pressed at a very specific angle upwards towards the screen. If pressed level with the side it doesn't depress without excessive force and makes a really nasty sound when you do this.

I would return it and demand a replacement instantly. All buttons work perfectly on mine.

I returned my phone but due to **** regulations in this godforsaken home of Nokia I had to send it to Warranty Service (a DOA device so to say).
This is **** customer service on all levels but that is not Nokia (HMD's) fault as so but the store I purchased it from.

Mine works fine too.
Im using my Nokia 8 with a Terrapin Nokia 8 Case

I sent mine back yesterday so hopefully should get a fully working one soon.

Must be with the case then? I use this one from eBay and it works well. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenuo-Uniqu...d=172810757479&_trksid=p2047675.c100012.m1985

I tried two different cases and even without any case the button would not feel right.

Very same issue here. The buttons are kind of sunk in the side of the device, it's a bit weird, and some of the cases can't cope. Annoying, to say the least.

I had ordered mine on mobiles.co.uk and since it was within one month managed to return it for free and get a new one, and the new one works perfectly! Maybe return yours as well if possible.

I made a little hole into the case. Now it works. It is a cheap case, so I am not really bothered.
Thank you anyway, I don't know why I didn't even think of sending it back.

Galaxy note home button

Has anybody's home button become really hard to push down?
When I push mine down, the initial click does not do anything, I have to further press down on the button pretty firmly.

Mine is fine, an easy press. Sounds like it's misaligned a bit.
A little update: the home button has completely stopped working
If it is misaligned, do you know how I could align it back?
I disassembled the my note today, but the button is actually part of the screen module and I did not want to take that apart.
Thanks.
Mine is also working great. I think you may consider sending it to Samsung to check it out
Yeah, I think that's what will most likely have to happen.
I purchased the phone from handtec and I've already sent them an email asking about the warranty and sending it back for repair.
I just hope the return postage won't cost an arm and a leg.
Mine is fine too.
This is why I'm afraid of buying an international version, I hate physical buttons because they can break or wear down. I also want the exzynos processor though, so I don't know if I should get the AT&T version.

Well I got the Infuse 4G now, so I only have one way anyhow. lol Do you know if CM9 has an option to add screen buttons? If so, then who cares if the Home button dies? I'll just use on screen.

In my opinion, use your phone heavily for the first 30 days. If it doesn't break by then, you've surely had a 95% chance of getting any manufacturing defects out of the way. The rest will just be usual wear and tear.
I mean, you do know that the homescreen button was likely designed to survive a crap load of presses right? Like thousands and thousands of presses.
Think of button phones not too long ago. I was sporting a w800i that lasted 4 years and the buttons were all functioning (and still do today but it's in cold storage) and I was pressing them almost unconsciously even though the phone was locked. It ain't that hard to just transfer those old school tech over.
Just pick one, and enjoy the phone. But strictly probability speaking, your AT&T power button should wear out faster. =)

Very true, and you're right about the power button. I am using the Inspire, I not the Infuse, and the lock button has started wearing off so it's harder to press.

Nexus 5 power button rattle fix....

Right, I may or may not be alone in this but the rattle from my power button was really starting to p**s me off. I could hear it clearly when the phone was at arms length and I tapped the screen anywhere in the top half. I thought it was the camera at first, then found holding the power button still whilst using the phone stopped it. This morning I was using my phone and decided to do something about it.
First can I say this was not any normal rattle (i.e camera lens), you could clearly hear it at arms length whilst tapping the screen in the top half. I made this video because people have told me they have the same issue. If you take your phone apart and break it, that's not my fault.
For those that have this problem and decide to do this, I hope it helps It has made me a hell of a lot happier with the phone.

Ah, forgot to mentiom, this is my 2nd one. Bought my first one and heard the rattle, took it back after 2 hours. The replacement does the same thing and looking on here in the defects thread it seems a few people have the problem. There's no sort of warranty seal inside the phone and the stuff can easily be taken out again should it die for some reason and I need to get a new one under warranty.

The battery seems easy enough to remove, so if there were one available I suppose it wouldn't take more than a few minutes to change

Some people analyse small insignificant things too much, surely it couldn't have made an audible noise level outside of a sound proof box.
Did the sales person look at you bemused or did he test the rattle and end up deafened by it?

He agreed that he could hear the rattle. It may not have seemed that important to him in a loud and busy shop, but when you're sat on your sofa in the evening and even the slightest of taps near the top of the screen make it rattle it doesn't take long before it becomes very annoying. If it were just when I shook the phone near my ear or something then I would have just accepted it, but it's the fact it is hard to ignore, even at arms length, made me want to do something about it.

Fair enough I guess.
I did the very same with my Nexus 4. Using tiny bits of tissue. Dunno why everyone is crying about it, its a very simple fix!
Thanks mate

I have a case for it that I got off ebay, a clear tpu gel one. It muffles the sound but it is still there, plus I really like the feel of the phone and in the case you lose that.

[VIDEO] Pressing the screen in a certain spot makes an audible clicking noise

Pressing on a certain spot of the screen (about 1/3 of the way from the top) makes an audible click and I can kind of feel it under my thumb too. I've had the phone for less than a week and it seems to work fine otherwise. I'll bring it into the Sony store on Monday to see what they say.
What could it be? Does this happen to anyone else? Do you think it's worth getting fixed?

How did you find out about this problem? Did you read about it somewhere and decided to try pressing your screen as well?
I'm pretty sure you'd never have found out about it during normal usage. Or did you randomly think to yourself "hey, I should really press my new phone's screen unusually hard and see if it make any noises" ?

I posted a thread about it a couple of days ago but should have mentionned it here as well that my phone wouldn't turn on after sleeping with it. I was checking for damage and I noticed this and assumed it was related. Though looking back, I'm pretty sure it was an unrelated software malfunction (kernel panic?), mainly because the battery kept draining during that time. It was at 60% when it was seemingly bricked (wouldn't even react to being plugged into multiple chargers and computers). then 24 hours later it magically let itself get charged, but for some reason was completely discharged at 0%. Everything worked normally from then on.

I'm a little worried about screen rigidity. After reading the other post about pressing the screen and seeing a rainbow and then seeing a YouTube video about a popping sound when you press on the screen. Hope Sony didn't go cheap here. I think it is, it definitely shouldn't be doing that. But I've decided to leave it be. I've ordered some tempered glass screen protectors - should stiffen up the screen a bit among other benefits.

Seems like they all do this sound
I purchased my Z3 yesterday and I also noticed this weird sound while I was putting the case on. So today I went back to the store to see if it was just mine.
I tested 4 different Z3 with the dude a the sony store and they all seem to be doing the same sound at the same spot. However i still got mine replaced for one that seemed a little better than the others.
So yeah it looks like it's normal...
Guess what? I found the same issue somehow couple of weeks back and thought it was weird. I wasnt trying to test anything specifically and just clicking on phone for something at that time and heard the noise. So I did some more checks and saw it happening on the top half of the screen only.
Mind does the same thing. I bought it yesterday and noticed it this morning...hopefully it isn't something that I need to return it for.

They all do it, z3 and z3 compact. I tested 4 different z3 and 2 z3 compact at the sony store when I went to get an exchange for mine.
I took one which seemed a little less worst, but still do it.
I'm probably gonna buy a tempered glass, it might help lessen the default.

Guys,Please post snap of your back panel, near the volume keys

I believe my back panel is slightly raised near the volume keys, I see small gap there. I don't have any other phone to post snaps at this moment, Will you please put zoomed snaps of your back panel near the volume keys.. Would like to confirm if it is a issue with my handset only or it looks same for other handset too.
Thanks a lot.
plss guys help
This has been brought up a few times in the forums already. From what I have heard, Moto has already acknowledged the issue and will take care of it. If you look at these two threads, you can see pictures of member's phones with the issue, from very minor all the way to extreme circumstances.

If you must have a photo, here is mine. The issue on my personal phone is very minor (I wouldn't have even realized it if it weren't for those links above) and gets just a little bit worse if the phone gets warm. However, even at its worst, I can barely get under the back cover with my fingernail.
I am not able to post a photo right now, but I can confirm the back cover is ever so slightly raised between power and volume buttons on my Nexus 6. I can't say if it has been like that from day one, but is so minor right now that it doesn't bug me. If it gets worse I'd probably get a cheap replacement back from eBay instead of going through an RMA process.
Here's a picture of mine, which has an almost undetectable gap. Unchanged since I purchased it.

Thanks to all those who posted. Mine is quite similar to you guys, very slightly raised. I guess ill keep an eye , if its get worse then go for replacement.
I just took mine back yesterday to T-Mobile store and had it replaced. Mine was slightly raised at store then when I got home and set it up and actually played a few games I decided to take the back off because I felt dampness on my right hand and was confused. Thought maybe it was sweat, but to my surprise when I took case off the back panel had a huge gap/bulge right around the volume buttons.!? But what really freaked me out is the liquid that was coming out of it as well. I managed to push the panel back down and as I was doing this this liquid was oozing out from that whole side. I immediately call T-Mobile store where I purchased it and was told not to use the device and turn it off and don't charge it.
When I took device to store they where vary concerned and the rep. Actually called a rep. At Motorola about the situation. At least that's what the sale rep. At T-Mobile said. They immediately gave me a new device and a free case / cover for the phone and sent me on my way.
I don't know what the rep at Motorola told the sale rep. But he did say they are taking a serious look at this issue. It seems to be a battery issue and some batteries are actually bursting. IDK but I have a new one now with no issues and love this device.

Hi
I just got mine from Tmo and start to notice this problem just like yours, i need to ask if the back case does help in this situation?
do i have to worry about it?
This means most of the devices have this back panel issue. Mine is 64GB one, so its not just 32GB that have the issue
I just called Tmo and they were very helpful and after 5 minutes of hanging up the phone they had shipped a new-brand device (as he told me they will). and i have to ship them the defective device. they also credit my account 10$ for me to ship the device
it should arrive tomorrow i hope the new one will be OK

I would return as soon as possible if your seeing any gaps in back panel. I not only had a bulge in mine but also had a mysterious liquid coming out of it. I know its hard to believe ,I wish I would have taken a picture but I didn't. Trust me just return it for another device.

I have something similar however its very minor. If I push with my nail it maybe moves 0.5mm
Mine looks like this http://images.anandtech.com/doci/8687/IMG_0152.JPG
I replaced my back cover when they became available on ebay because there were some scuffs from the factory and the covers were only about $8. The new one is raised slightly. You can push it down but it raises back up over time. I would imagine any replacement will do the same until they address the adhesive on the back,

S-Pen doesn't work after two weeks. (Ghost touches)

So after less than two weeks with my brand new device, the S-Pen stopped working (from one day to another). The phone recognizes it when I take it off, but soon after I hover it on the screen, starts interacting with it. It's like putting a piece of tape on the S-Pen tip and trying to write with it. Air Command doesn't work, neither the little circle that appears when you put the S-Pen close to the screen. I bought a $1000 device and now the most important/marketed feature stops working. What should I do? I've imported it so I don't have any warranty other than the one Seller gave to me (which now he's saying that the SPen is an accessory and it's not covered by their warranty).

I see in your sig you've had other Notes, do you still have any of them? Try the Spen from one of your older Notes & see if it works. They are compatible, just be sure to take the Spen out of the Note 8 first, unless you have Spen Power Saver turned off, or the Spen won't work. That will tell you if you simply have a defective Spen or not. Although I've never had an Spen go bad, it is possible, hopefully it's just the Spen.
I had the same issue with my note 7, after 1 week the s pen started to behave erratic, I tried the s pen of my note 4, and it worked fine, as the note 7 was recalled and I did not want to surrender it, I bought another s pen, case solved, try with another s pen from another device, if you can not claim warranty, get another s pen, I have seen them for some 25-40 dollars

I see in your sig you've had other Notes, do you still have any of them? Try the Spen from one of your older Notes & see if it works. That's the first thing I've did. Even the first gen S-pen works fine. The phone works perfectly. I've also tested the 8's pen with the other devices and it also had issues. Luckly, the problem is the pen. Unfortunately, it's near impossible to get a new one in Argentina

Yup, the main problem is that I'm unable to find the original pen here in my country, only knockoffs. I need to import it from the States, which is a pain in the ass and I don't meet the requirements to do such a thing. I guess I need to ask to some friends if they would import it for me. The worst thing is that I need to bother a lot of people to get a fix for a thousand dollars phone. I just can't believe it..

You can buy it from Mexico too, is easier than import from USA. Here you can buy official spen. Try use Mercado libre

Well at least it's just the Spen & not the phone. Yeah that sucks how Argentina banned online international purchases. I used to forward stuff to someone I knew in Argentina but even he got hit with duty fees even though I declare as gift. For my buddies in the EU they rarely got hit with duties.
Is it possible to purchase one through Samsung in Argentina, like is there a Samsung store there?
If worse comes to worse I can offer to purchase one & forward to you but shipping costs might not be worth it even if you can get one there for more than what it should originally cost.
Did you try changing the tip?

Right now the seller says that he's awaiting response from his provider, I hope they'll give it to me without charge. There's a Samsung Store here, and they even promote the Note 8. But they don't even have a case for it so I doubt they would have an S-Pen, but I'll contact them if my seller doesn't have one. As you said, even as a "gift", you can't import anything without having Grade 3 tributary (or taxpaying?) identification code, named CUIT here. As I'm a student, I don't have one yet so It's impossible to me to get things outside of my country. Thankfully the situation is different than two years ago (even with that code, you wouldn't be able to import anything). I really appreciate your intention btw!

That's the second thing I did. I've tried all the 6 tips and none of them made a difference. Heck even without the tip is still malfunctioning. It's like something being stuck inside, but that's impossible since I didn't replaced the tip since the day I bought it.
why don't you try and go down to the Samsung store there and show them the problem, if you do that and are polite about it they might just organise a new pen for you
If your seller will not solve isseu, just buy new S Pen on Ebay:

are you using a case that has a magnet? Magnets are known to not play well with the spen

Well thats way too old lol. The restriction was deleted in 2016-17 by the actual president. However, I'm unable to import it as I dont have a tributary code because I'm a student. I may have to contact Samsung here, but I'm pretty sure that the pen would cost me up to $150 if I get it from Samsung Argentina.

I'm not using any case with a magnet, I'm using a silicone case.

Fun fact is that my device now won't recognize if the S Pen is inside, resulting in a heavy battery drain and a constant alarm saying that I've lost the S-Pen. Same thing happened with the Note 5 when you broke the internal switch by inserting the Pen backwards. The thing is, now I don't know if the problem is the S Pen only, or the S Pen/Note combo. So now I really need a little help here:
I want to know how does the device recognizes the pen inside: is it a mechanical switch like older Notes, or an electronic sensor?. If it's mechanical/physical switch, then I'm done. It's broke, forever. If it's a sensor, it may stopped detecting the Pen because the pencil itself is broken, so If I replace the Pen only, it should be good.
I've seen JerryRigEverything's video about how Samsung made the Note 7 waterproof. Since the N8 S-Pen is the same as the N7 one, I came to the conclusion that the S-Pen holder is the same too. As you can see in this video at 3:19 mark, there isn't any plastic switch, but there's a cable coming from the upper part that snaps on the motherboard. I'm assuming that's the sensor. If I'm right, then my device is fine as I wouldn't be able to break that sensor. I don't know. I'll have to try a new S Pen and see what happens..

Doesn't make any difference. Sadly it's a hardware issue.
