whats ur unlock config? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hi guys. Just wondering what peoples unlock set up is.
I have face recognition and pattern. Even though my hands are big enough i find the finger print scanner to be too much effort. I heard the retina scanner draws a lot of power so i dont use that.
I find the unlock pattern a bit of a nuisance and i get a little frustrated when the facial recognition doesnt work. Sony managed to put the print scanner on the side of their phine im sure samsung could have fit one in the space below the screen..... every method apart from the basic ones require you to pick up the phone.
So what are your unlock preferences?

My Pebble 2 as a trusted device. When I'm with my phone it's therefore unlocked

Fingerprint/pin unlock after 10 min, secure startup (pin).

Fingerprint for me it took like what half hour for me to get used to it being on the back of the phone
fingerprint is way quicker than any other unlock

Ive been using the iris scanner with samsung pay. Its pretty quick. Quicker than face scanner for me

None? I feel like I might be opening myself to bad things, but I like to just press hard on the bottom of the screen and boom, I'm into my phone.

If you've got nothing to hide and don't store any unencrypted sensitive data on your phone, then that's definitely the fastest option.

I use my Huawei watch as a trusted device. This allows a hard press of the home button and I'm in.

Fingerprint scanner too fast!!

I'm finding it quite difficult to turn on the screen of my XZ1C without unlocking the phone...
Sometimes I just want to look at the lock screen without the phone unlocking, but the fingerprint scanner reacts so quickly that the lock screen (along with any notifications) is gone before I've even read the time!!
Is there a way to set a delay (probably not) or set another button (vol? camera?) to wake up the screen without unlocking the phone? I'd rather not have to disable the fingerprint scanner, and I never had this issue with my Z5C.
Seriously?
People complaining about the fp-scanner being too fast nowadays?
As for solutions, you could always use a finger where you haven't stored the print.
Or use your fingernail to press the button.

That's what I'm doing - it's a bit awkward! On the Z5C there was just enough time to remove your finger before the phone unlocked so you could have a quick glance at the screen. It must use more battery to fully wake up the phone everytime the power button is pressed?
I guess "tap to wake" would have been another solution to my (admittedly small) problem.
Oh, come on now. Fast fingerprint scanner is a good thing. There shouldn't be such thing as too fast. I would simply "reserve" my middle fingers for checking the lock screen.
Even if I use the "wrong" finger, the lockscreen bounces to the left because it's tried reading the fingerprint which is also annoying when all I want to do is check the time and for any notifications!
a novel approach i just set up: when scanning your thumb, only scan the pad and not the tip. then you can use the pad to unlock and the tip to check the lock screen.
(doesn't fix the problem of the bounce tho)
Use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jarsilio.android.waveup
Just wave your hand over the proximity sensor and the screen will turn on but won't unlock the phone if you have a lock.
Don't enable the lock screen functionality though, it doesn't support fingerprint unlock.
Lol why don't u just use a another finger?

look on the Play Store for Power Button to Volume Button by TeliApp, the app is old but still works and will allow you to use the volume down button as a second screen on button. it reverts back to being a normal volume down button once the screen is on. no root required. (I would post a link but XDA won't let me because I'm a new user)

P10 how disable wake-up by home button

How to disable the home button when the screen is locked? The screen now activates when you touch the home button (finger reader) - later phone can be unlock by PIN or finger, but how to disable screen wake up by this butto?. I would like to block this possibility so that the screen wakes up only by pressing the on / off button.
Your P10 does this?
I tried it on my P10 a second ago. My phone only vibrates when I tap the homebutton with a finger or part of my skin which isn't getting recognized by the phone. But the screen stays of.
Which version are you on? I'm on VTR-L29C432B162
i have VTR-L29C432B151, and a wanne disable it, because it is very annoying.
Dude, you really don't understand how fingerprint scanner with its features works...
Workaround: just don't tap on that area

When you deactivate the fingerprint reader to unlock your device(settings/fingerprint/screen unlock), then when you tap on the reader, when the device is locked, the screen turns on.
I personally use fingerprint to unlock my device, but have another complain and that is, when i want to check my lock screen for missed calls/recieved messages i have to take the device to my hand and push the on/off button.
would be great to have double tap to wake function.

You misunderstand. I'm having this same grievance as it's so easy to knock the scanner when moving the phone that the next movement then swipes to unlock it and the next thing you know you're opening apps and tapping stuff.
I don't give two hoots about fingerprint scanners as they are inherently insecure so I will never use mine. I'd like the ability to disable it completely so it doesn't even act as a button.

You're using a password that you carry on your person at all times, is always visible, and can't be changed. If someone steals your phone they just need to grab your hand and put it on the reader to have full access.

Do you really think that someone would steal your phone and your hand just to unlock your device? Ok maybe if you are a bilionaire or presdent of the united states...
The same i can say about unlock pins or gestures ..they need just to put you under drugs and you will tell them the code.
Same as with iris scanner, they just need your phone and your eye .
Too paranoic in my opinion. There is way higher probability that you would die in car accident or airplane accident than someone stelas your phone and your hand . 99% of stolen phones are stolen beacuse of value of the device, not because someone would spend hours to get into your device.
But anyway it is your opinion ...

Indeed.
So, getting back on track, does anyone know a way to disable the fingerprint reader in its entirety? I suspect this may only be possible with a custom-ROM or at the very least root access.
Besides it makes no sense, I think there is no oficial way to completly deactivate the fingerprint reader.

Can you pin a regular note to the lock screen?

I find the ability to pin a screen off memo to the AOD very useful, cause I get quite busy at work and tend to forget to follow up with things, and this kind of forces me to see it. However, screen off memo seems a little finicky in terms of how long it stays up for, making sure my screen is actually locked when I pull out the pen, etc. Sometimes if I have the phone already on and I want to pin a note, I have to lock it, put the pen in, then pull the pen back out just to get screen off memo to activate.
Is there a way to just pin any note I make in samsung notes to the AOD? This would be a lot more usable in many situations.
I also am looking for a solution to this. My scenario is very similar to yours.
The closest option I could find was pinning a note to the home screen.
I am hoping this is just a minor oversight by Samsung and the function may be added in something like "SmartLock"

Activate screen off memo by locking screen while spen is out and double tapping it by spen button pressed.
Always worked for me. No need to reinsert spen.
Neat feature to add multiple screen off memos too.

Ya? I cant get that to work. Two taps doesn't do anything.
I did note that you can change the Note Type in the Notes app. I changed one to a screen off memo but I still cant get it on lock screen :crying:

It one click of the spen button if your spen is already out and you turn off the screen. Make sure the spen is hovering over the screen or it will just try to unlock your phone.

Serious practical problem lock screen

Strange thing is happening recent to me...
Namely, while using headphones while talking on the phone, the unit gets unlocked while in pocket and problems arise with spontaneous keys getting activated.
If even cannot be explicitly locked by pressing the power button.
Have not found a solution to this problem, and it's strange why the proximity sensor does not work in pocket.
Cannot remember whether this was previously, or is it since last ROM upgrade.
Anyone having same problem?

Yep I have the same thing... Today my pocket took 9599295 pictures and movies.. also when I'm a bit sweat my pocket dial random numbers. I've noticed that when screen is touched and disnt recognize fingerprint then whole lockscreen shows up and its easy way to random open dial or camera... Its rly anoying, because I dont want to hide phone screen outside of the skin. (Its easier to break screen if I hit something with my leg.)
Dunno why it doesnt use proximity sensor to recognize that phone is in the pocket like every other brand... :/
Do you have the double tap to wake up activated?
I had this problem a while ago and it was the double tap that played all kinds of tricks calling emergency and taking pictures in my pocket! Disable double tap to wake up screen and the problem goes away.

Tried everything but the problem is eventually still there. Actually I've found a bug, namely the display will wake up once touched several times near the center of the fingerprint reader. Try it yourself.
Not nice - cannot avoid to happen it sometimes even if all options are disabled.

I didn't have this problem. If I try now and touch the part with the scanner, doesn’t have to be just the centre of the scanner, rapidly around ten times the lock screen will turn on, but nothing happens when I touch the shortcuts. Perhaps they are disabled, so the only thing that happens if the scanner is touched again is that the numpad to unlock with pin appears.
This is not good as it may severely affect battery life if it happens a lot. This clearly must be a bug!

Even worse, since it is happening all the time while on a call via BT and my phone is in the pocket. I am now thinking about to switch over to my old MI8...
Cannot understand why the keyboard is not disabled in the pocket. Seems so easy to do it but it's as it seems on.

My only solution was to buy a flip case. At first, I disabled the fingerprint reader by removing all fingerprints and setting up face recognition, but this didn’t fix the problem you are talking about. I don’t really like flip cases, but the Nillkin QIN Smartcase is rather good.
So now I ‘m eagerly awaiting a fix from Xiaomi so I can strip the Mi9 again!

Disabling the fingerprint icon has no effect on the problem we are talking about here. The only way to make the problem go away is to remove all the stored fingerprints thus disabling the use of fingerprints all together. This will shut off the fingerprint sensor doing away with this problem in a crude way.
If you really are looking for a setting, please use the search function at the top of the settings.

Question Phone unlocking in pocket

I often find that my phone is unlocked or pocket dialed in my pocket, occasionally feeling a little vibration when I guess it is trying to unlock.
I unlock with fingerprint usually. My trouser pockets clearly don't have my fingerprints pressing against the sensor.
I've turned on the "pocket mode" option in advanced settings but it still does it.
Is there any way I can fix this? I am not rooted and have locked bootloader.
Thanks

At least they are consistent
I'm using Pocket Lock from Play Store, I set it to lock my phone when it's upside down and the screen is getting turned on.
It's not perfect, but solves the above problem which annoyed me as well as you.
Edit: I've turned off the phone's own pocket mode, Pocket Lock alone is sufficient enough.

Big problem also for me, I've made like a thousand call or multiple WhatsApp forward...
I solved turning off face unlock. Just using the fingerprint or sequence
The most confusing thing here is how on earth does the phone accept the unlock while in pocket? When using my finger it rejects it often enough.. in my pocket my thigh has a higher success rate? I doubt it randomly would draw the right pattern so often.
So all a thief would have to do is put the phone in their pocket and it unlocks eventually!
Use a case/care when placing in pocket and place the back the phone against your skin, not the display.
What's really disturbing is when you find it has opened setup pages you don't even recognize
Has anybody tried Pocket Lock? ASUS' built-in pocket mode is very buggy, it would be more than enough to check the gyroscope if the phone is in mostly vertical position (upside down or vice versa), and when the proximity sensor shows almost 0 distance to something, the screen should stay off and the phone locked. That's what Pocket Lock provides a working solution for - I'm not the developer, so I'm not advertising it, but as somebody who had the same problem as you have in this subtopic, I bought the pro version and the "ghost unlocking" is now gone.

There's an alternative locking method to keep fingerprint unlocking, but seemingly it doesn't work under A12 - still, you can keep using the fingerprint reader until Pocket Lock has locked your device, which is better than call anybody from your pocket.
BTW, your pocket won't unlock your phone as stated in one of the previous posts, but an incoming call will turn your screen on, and if you're unlucky, on the virtual dial pad your pocket will enter numbers.
