Time to take picture (camera launch speed) - Google Pixel 2 Real Life Review

There! Something just happened! Did you take a picture of it? Rate this thread to express how fast the Google Pixel 2 can go from "zero to picture". A higher rating indicates that launching the camera app and taking a photo is extremely fast such that you never miss an important moment, like when your cat attacks the couch again.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Having used the Pixel 2 in a Verizon store, this aspect of the phone looks VERY promising. Leaps and bounds faster than my Nexus 6P.

Camera launch is actually the fastest I have ever seen on a smartphone, also faster than iPhone 8 Plus.

No issues whatsoever with bringing the camera up. I love the double press the power button to start the camera; so much more fluid than the ridiculous swipe gestures I could never get to go right on iOS.

Camera launch speed is really fast (for now... The phone is still new).
Camera was really slow in my Nexus 6 and 6P. I was always missing occasions. Took almost 5 seconds every time to be ready to take a shot.
Now it's about 1 second at most.

You could try deleting apps data and cache

I figured I'd time the camera "zero to picture". No way, it's too fast. 200ms? It's faster than I am, so I'm the limit in how fast I can get a picture, the app is no limit at all.

Best Camera in the section
Undoubtedly, Google has taken AI into a smartphone camera to another level.

1-2 seconds using double press power button

Camera startup time and click time is really fast. really happy with camera.

Mine has slowed down significantly over the last year... It can take up to 10 seconds until all the buttons are active. Not sure what's wrong...

Interesting. Could be nice to have one, but I'm afraid I don't really have much need for it.
Funny while trying to accomplish a picture of the full moon this past week I dreamed of this exact feature. But i have to agree, without a tripod it would be a blurry mess.
The phone takes incredible close up pictures, or normal high res pictures when i set the focus to center. But without a way to steady the phone, it would be basically useless.
But i would still try it!! Hell yeah.
so till now nobody ever came across something like this???... ...it must possible right?..I just want a small application thats able to keep the shutter open for a few second...
I do not know of any application for this. However, even if you find one I am not sure you would like the results. Small very dense CMOS sensors like the ones in thee phones do not like long exposures. The sensor heats up quickly and creates tons of image noise that has to be removed in post processing. By the time you delete the noise, all the detail is gone as well. I have a $2.5K Leica that takes great pictures at normal exposures, but anything over 1/4 second is unusable to me.
If you want long digital exposures worth keeping, you really need to step up to a higher quality camera with a larger physical sensor. Oddly enough, the lower the megapixel count, the better the image will be.
Doug M.
Its a good idea but i dont think the picture would come out great. Since the phone's camera sensor is so small there would be A LOT of noise. Even on my Canon XSi with long exposures I get some noise, and the cameras sensor is about 20 times bigger than the phones.

And yet, my $1.8K Canon takes AMAZING long exposure shots, even up to 30 seconds.

Yes, my newer Nikon D700 does quite well with low-light and long exposures. I have done some 30 second exposures that just amaze me. The Leica is old by digital standards (4 years). I cannot wait to seewhat the next 4 years will bring. Maybe we can get rid of our flashes forever...
Doug M.
You could just take a video and then convert it to a long exposure photo using an app on your computer
http://www.nimisis.com/projects/exposure.php
I also just saw this app online, haven't tried it yet though.

I know That iphone has one Called Magic Shutter and it replicates some amazing results. Now all we need is to port it to android
long exposure is awesome. even my $400 xti takes some excellent long exposure pictures.
I want to do timelapse star photography and I need 20+ second exposure times per shot. Grrrr.

The OS isnt slow, and it doesnt take 8 seconds to take a picture after loading the camera...it just took me 3 seconds!
EDIT: And more like 5 seconds from a locked phone.
I would never go after a nokia test or benchmark. dude, they're absolutely locked in an ivory castle tower .. what is an N9 after all .. they're way behind all manufacturers hardware/os and still feel they're n1 ...
our handset shoots very sharp pictures in my opinion and night pictures are just the best (compared to my sisters bb9700 bold/w flash and my brother's optimus 7). I am a previous owner of an acer liquid, sammy i900/i780/ centro/ and much more.
I feel the hd7 is an amazing package if you understand how to use/accept a smartphone. screen size is amusing and for the low capacity battery it stays a full day on a single charge utilizing camera, music player wifi, sadly no bt as it is of no use to me atm
peaceout
I agree the native part of the OS is fantastic BUT any market application even after NoDo is painfully slow. I hope this changes with Mango!

Nexus 5 camera does NOT suck

So sick of reviewers saying the camera is crappy or the software is too slow. I have compared my Nexus 5 camera against these phones below and it is so night and day its sick. The nexus 5 camera takes phenomenal photos. The pics are crisp and clear and full of color. It sucks too because I really love my LG Optimus G pro but the camera is so bad I want to puke. In low light my S4 in night mode comes close but not close enough to the nexus 5. I think the only better camera I have tested was the iphone 5s which might even be on par. So don't worry about the camera as its spot on. The only reason I was going to go back to the OGP was the removable battery and the home button but man this nexus is nice. Guess its going to stay my main phone until something better comes along.

The camera app is horrendous. The iPhone's camera app is beautiful and simple and more functional. The software IS too slow. It takes forever to focus. There is no burst mode to speak of. The iPhone can take a hundred shots in the time it takes the Nexus 5 to take 5.
The camera module in the Nexus 5 is a good one, and the phone is capable of taking great pictures, but every piece of software between the module and your finger hitting the on screen button seems to be getting in the way and making achieving that perfect shot as hard as possible. Sorry to say, but your opinion is wrong. The Nexus 5 in its current state does not have a camera experience even remotely comparable to the iPhone 5s. All of the Galaxy phones take better pictures and have less trouble focusing and have a more feature rich camera app as well. You may be right about the Optimus G Pro, but 1/5 aint that good. Being able to point to a handful of absolutely stunning shots that came from a Nexus 5 doesn't prove anything. It doesn't tell you how many hundreds had to be thrown away or retaken because of being out of focus or having the exposure all wrong, or how frustrating an experience it was to achieve that shot.

Price aside, the Nexus 5 delivers solid if unspectacular image quality. It’s definitely a contender, though if image quality if your absolute priority, there are phones with better-performing cameras: the Nokia Lumia 1020, and (under most conditions) the Sony Xperia Z1, Samsung Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5s will deliver technically superior photos. Even Nokia’s 925 (and the 928 Verizon variant) will usually best the Nexus. The point is that apart from exotics like the 1020, the competition isn’t blowing the Nexus 5 out of the water. It takes good pictures. Just not quite as good as the best.
Where the Nexus 5 falls down is speed: the S4 and 5s don’t keep you waiting. The iPhone in particular is a speed demon. The 1020 lumbers a bit, but it’s mostly fast when it counts. If you’re used to the latest generation or two of phone cameras, the Nexus 5 camera app will frustrate you with its plodding and hesitation. On the other hand, if you’re someone who shoots scenes that hold still, the lack of speed may be a non-issue.

I don't care what what that site says .... I use real life experiences and I never forget its a phone not a camera . the N5 takes great pictures in comparison to my other 16 androids . and well **** an iPhone .
I took this at a concert and it is one of the best phone camera concert pictures I've ever taken. I for one think the optics of the camera are great. The software on the other hand could be better.

No way the Nexus 5 takes a better picture than the iPhone 5s especially with any low light situation. It is capable of taking good pictures in perfect conditions however. The real issue is the software completely sucks (terrible and slow focusing, etc) so no matter what you think, the average person is taking terrible pictures with the phone. And it is all because the camera software is terrible. There is no other way around it. So yes, it CAN take great shots. But most of the time it doesn't.
I have to agree with the guy, the Nexus 5 camera is not horrible but it seems quite a few devices are having issues which are most likely hardware or software related. My Nexus 5 camera is absolutely fine. I did notice the camera doesn't focus correctly on the subject, so don't snap a picture that isn't in focus or not focused on the right spot, that's on you.
I have a N5, iPhone 5, Note 2 and Galaxy S4 within my reach. Took them all for a spin today and lemme rate the cameras:
1. Galaxy S4. Camera is good, not bad software, no real issues at all.
2. Nexus 5. Yes the software sux but with Sur's Camera mod V1.3 it's better and I was able to get a better photo than the next 2 in almost every situation.
3. iPhone 5. Best software but the camera it self seems to be lacking. Especially in darker situations (today it was very wintery dark out there) so I had real trouble getting good clean photos.
4. Note 2. Pretty much on par with the iPhone but worse software and the camera it self is also pretty poor when compared to this bunch.
Honestly, I don't have too many complaints to the N5's camera considering the phone costs so much less than any of those did when they came out. Yes the software is the worst in the bunch but as it is SOFTware it can be changed and fixed and as long as the camera it self seems good, I can't see what all the fuss is about.
All this said, HDR has to be on. If it's off the photos are absolutely terrible for some reason.

I'm replying to you, but this goes to everybody that says the camera isn't slow or problematic when focusing:
You must not have kids or pets.
Trying to focus on something that is moving is an *impossible* feat with this phone. The phone can take great photos, but the image quality is *not* better than the iPhone 5S or Galaxy S4. Thinking it is means you're delusional, because every review site (including photography sites, where they specialize in determining exactly what we're talking about) agrees with me. The camera is adequate, but it is not a superb shooter. Most of that is arguably the software...since, with the right conditions, the phone *can* take great pictures. Until it's reliable though, in doing so, the camera isn't that helpful.
Have you thought that maybe your opinion is a bit biased? After taking side-by-side pictures using my GS4, iPhone 5S, and Nexus 5 I can easily see that the Nexus 5 only keeps up when people aren't moving or I'm able to really take the time to set up the shot. It takes *FAR* too long to open the camera app (which is a huge factor for a smartphone camera), and it takes *FAR* too long to actually take the shot (shutter-lag). I can go from hitting the power button to getting a well-focused picture on my GS4 or iPhone 5S in under 2 seconds...with the Nexus 5 that stretches to around 6-7 seconds, minimum. That's a huge difference when your kid just smacked herself in the face with cake and you want to get a picture before she wipes it off and starts screaming.
The Nexus 5 camera is adequate, but not superb.

Ok, moving targets noted but lets leave that out for a second and talk about standing still objects. Here the nexus camera takes the best photos. Plenty more detail, colors and light than all the others. This is what I am saying. I would attribute the lack of focusing on moving targets a software problem that hopefully will get fixed but in the end the Nexus 5 has the best camera module than the others. That is really what I am saying and honestly that is what really counts. If I want to take actions shots I will use my Canon 7D.

This is when I was taking a video. In video mode you can tap on the screen to take a picture while shooting video. I found that most of the pictures I took like this weren't blurry The weird thing also is that when you're in video mode there's ZSL (zero shutter lag) which there isn't normally. So for parts of the concert i'd just throw it into video mode and tap on the screen for the pictures. NOW, I know that the pictures would only be 1920x1080 instead of 3264x2448, but I prefer this. I HATE the 3264x2488 format, it looks to squareish for me lol. Also i'd rather the pictures be crisp and not blurry and a tad bit smaller then having them be blurry and bigger lol. Just my thoughts
The camera is fine, the software is terrible so the camera might as well suck. Pictures are typically out of focus after repeat attempts to get it to focus.

You are a looser tester.
S4 camera is way much better than N5. It's higher mpix and it focuses twice much faster.
Hasn't Google already addressed the camera issue? It's already been said that Google are working on the software side since they know it's ruining photos.
I seriously love my Nexus 5 camera, sure it has some downsides like shooting time etc.. but overall the quality of pictures I took and HDR+ was a huge improvement over my nexus 4 and even my GS4. OIS was a huge help I do have shaky hands

Time to take picture (camera launch speed)

There! Something just happened! Did you take a picture of it? Rate this thread to express how fast the Moto Z Force can go from "zero to picture". A higher rating indicates that launching the camera app and taking a photo is extremely fast such that you never miss an important moment, like when your cat attacks the couch again.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
The camera app opens incredibly quickly. Couple that with the "double twist" moto gesture, and I have my phone off my belt clip with the camera app open and shooting before my friends even have their phones out of their pockets.
Am I the only one who feels that the camera's shutter speed is incredibly slow? Most of the time, as I start to take a photo, it'll start the flash and I'll pull the camera away thinking the shot was taken. When I do this it takes a darn photo of the world around me in all of its motion blurred glory. I really wish there was some way to speed up the shots.
Sent from my XT1650 using Tapatalk
You can turn HDR. That helps some people. Using the pro mode also gives faster results for some people.
I downloaded the Google Camera and the shutter speed increased just by that alone but I second the Pro mode.

Slow. 6 secs for taking a screenshot

I need to take screenshots quite often for work. Each takes about 6 seconds!
During this period, basically you can't do anything but edit the shot which I don't actually need to.
It is very annoying.
Anyone experiencing this?

I found the solution by myself. Under developer options, with animation speed all off. It takes the longest time : 6 seconds. Wth 1X speed: 4 seconds and 0.5X speed 3 seconds. So 0.5 speed is the answer
Btw, i come from S8 too and really impressed by P20P's battery, camera and overall smoothness.
