s pen alternatives - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Looking for serious note users. Was wondering the best s pen to use for longer writing sessions. I have tried the one with my note 12.2 pro and the one with my note 8.0 . Looking for some ideas. I thought I saw someone using the tab 3 s pen in a thread but I can't seem to find it. I like the larger style better for sure, for longer writing sessions.
Thanks

Maybe surface pen will work?

Sorry could not resist.
But seriosly the Apple Pencii is really great. I use it at work together with my iPad. It is close to normal writing on paper

From past experience not all wacom pens are fully compatible
The wacom stylus feel for galaxy note is compatible, same size and diameter as a full length pen, very hefty (weight and size), has a mechanical feel to it, ironically i personally never did like how it felt in the hand.
The wacom smart for galaxy note is also compatible, have not tried this one so no personal experience
And finally the s-pen from the galaxy tab S3, which actually is a really nice pen, it's about 3/4 length of a standard pencil, though it's feels a little light in the hand it has a really nice textured finished on the whole barrel (feels like rubber). I personally think it's size and weight is perfect for the note 8.

Been doing some research on this as well. Wacom Styluses using EMR technology will work on our Notes, but not newer technology. This is why only the first and second generation Surface pens work, but not the 3rd generations or newer. The newest Wacom Intuos styluses will also not work.

For the note line of devices Wacom actually uses what they term as "penabled" technology, only penabled compatible devices will work (these tend to be screens that support both capacitive touch and EMR pen). Gen 1 and 2 surface pro were using wacom penabled tech, microsoft brought N-Trig and used that tech for gen 3 onward (it's actually an active pen which requires AAAA batteries to work).
samsung XE700T1A slate 7 line had a full size pen (though some what slim), it was lightweight and had an eraser on the end (note 8 does not seems to recognize the function and acts like a pointer, but have not exhaustively tested against all apps). The Fujitsu lifebooks ive been told supported a pen with 2 buttons, but not had opportunity to test these out. Other notable makers are Asus with it's EEE Slate (full size pen) and lenovo (mini pen, slightly smaller than the galaxy tab S3)

Just a reminder for the OP: when using 3rd party pens, make sure to turn off "Spen detection" in power saving settings. The Note will ignore pen taps when that is enabled and an Spen is in the silo, so you'd think that the new pen is not working.

Oh.... That's what happened. I was wondering why it wouldn't work without the original s pen removed.
Thanks!!

But wouldn't keeping the screen energized for s-pen at all times, use extra battery power? And let me say from the beginning I have no idea if it's substantial amount or not to even worry about.

Yes keeping the screen active will drain some battery, though I don't think by very much as it will still sleep when screen sleeps.
Can also confirm eraser on the Samsung slate 7 pen will work as an eraser if the app can accomodate, sketchbook, Samsung note and artflow will utilise eraser, surprisingly OneNote and Photoshop sketch does not

Got the tab 3 s pen yesterday , what a difference. Feels good and no cramps after lots of writing. I would put up with the Note 8 being a bigger phone if they could fit this full size s pen in it! Today will see how much battery it uses since I set the the phone ro always detect so I don't have to pull the original s pen out.

Ok also got the steadler pencil as well. Works great, a little larger but just like holding and old school pencil. I really like both! Also , after 2 days now, I can tell no difference in battery life leaving the phone set to always detect s pen. I couldn't find a specific item in the battery menu that looked like the wacom screen, but really still awesome battery.

Which one do you prefer nuclearrage? Found no comparison of these 3 together!
- Samsung Galaxy Note 8 s pen
- Samsung Tab S3 s pen
- Steadler digital pencil
I also own a Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 and just love it! I use a S Pen Holder Kit so that if feels like a real pen. It has a et-s100ewegstd S Pen, which is the 1st S Pen ever released for the Note 1. I like it a lot, but not as precise as the original S Pen that comes with the note pro 12.2.
Would also the 2 other Samsung s pens work with the 12.2 ?
Thanks!
Marco

I don't know what u need the all this writing for but if u use it for school or work then I would use a tablet. I still got my beloved note 10.1 tablet and use it at work for quick notes for my daily report.
I wouldn't use a phone for lots of writing as it's too small to write longer S.A's and I can only imagine the annoyance of doing so.
Maybe keep an eye out if Sammy releases a new note tablet in the future if you find the note 10.1 to outdated.
Not that the above has anything to do with spen alternatives but just my two cents.

S pen kit for Note 2?

I have a Note 2 on order from Verizon and will be using it mostly for work and meetings. I would like to get a larger pen that I can keep in my shirt pocket. Any word if there is going to be a pen kit similar to the one for the first Note? It also seems that some of Wacom's other products may work with the Note 2, any suggestions on a larger pen that would work? Thanks!
I bought this pen from Samsung. It's the same size as most regular size pens. Works great with the Note 2.

There is a 50% off coupon that's one of the other threads that works with this item too. Not sure if any of the Wacom pens work.

I have the same one as the poster above. At work I use my phone as a note pad all the time. There are two other options but this one has the thinnest barrel size and even has an eraser. On another thread we've found that no Wacom tablet pen works but there are other tablet stylus' that do.
Once again the poster above has it right with the 50% coupon, hell if you have the money buy both. From what I understand the technology didn't really change just the size of the s pens.

The S-pen kit for the Note 1 can be used on the Note 2. I've used it from day one as I find the S-pen uncomfortable to use in its native form.

Did the pen fit well since I thought the dimension for the Note2 Spen was slightly larger? I'm interested in the kit myself.

The Stylus in the pen kit won't fit into the Note 2 . I just wanted a more comfortable pen to use, hence I purchased the pen kit for my Note1 which I also use for my Note2.

A/Market S-Pen?

Just wondering whether anyone knows of any after market (non OEM) S Pens out there (or in development)? Im finding Im using the Note 2 almost exclusively with the S Pen and would like to try a different (high end) stylus.

Thanks for replying mate. Ive done a bit of a look around the internets and there seems to be mixed opinions about whether the wacom styles work or not. Given apparently the pen and the screen is made by Wacom I should be able to find one that does. What I would really like is a high end pen which fits in the phone.
I'm looking for a decent and large Spen too.
Here's another post on the Bamboo pen. I'm waiting for more info on whether it actually works well with the Note 2.

Im looking for an aftermarket one that has a real ink pen on the end. Has anyone seen one?
I think most active wacom styluses will work, I'm using one from my 2007 era tablet pc, the button works, the eraser end works and the pressure sensitivity works perfectly. No issues with alignment either.
I know this isn't an S-pen... it's a blobby capacitive pen emulating your finger: YesPen S1-plus
but this isht is sick as fcxzk. 1)Capacitive stylus - seems about the same (effectively) aside from the mushiness of it - you can still write great on the note; 2) real ink pen; 3)usb drive and sdhc card; 4)bluetooth earpiece; 5) bluetooth speakerphone; 6)integrated out of the box with samsung speak; 7) 3.5mm headphone(s) jack for a2dp stereo; 8) standard universal non-proprietary male usb (without the shield) built in for direct charging, usb memory, and sdhc access... 9) only $50 on ebay - less than half the price of the Samsung spen with bluetooth earpiece but soooo many more features.
CANNOT WAIT FOR THE YESPEN S2 if they ever make it - hopefully with spen too.
Anyone else try this yet or find an english language manual?
I've been using it for about a month and LOVE IT!

A Third Party Metal S-Pen?

Does anyone know of a third party metal S-Pen? Probably not for the Note 5 considering it just released, but what about the Note 4? I love drawing on the Note 5, but I dislike the feel of the plastic body of the S-Pen -_-.
Mont Blanc made a series of pens for the Note 4, but they're pricey. Outside of that the best pen for the Note 4 was the Bamboo Feel pen. It was for the Note 3&4, but I'm not sure about it's compatibility with the Note 5.
But then there's this... The new Bamboo Smart! It's designed for the Samsung Tab A and the Note. It's brand new so I'd imagine this is your best bet. http://www.wacom.com/en-us/products/stylus/bamboo-smart
I was thinking of more on the lines of a replacement that still goes into the slot for the S Pen. I have a graphics tablet for professional work. But for the most part, ive been drawing less and less due to school and stuff. With the Note 5, it has been much more convenient to just draw whenever I can and not bring a computer and tablet.

Oh, I see. I think that would have to come from Samsung then. What's wrong with the one that comes with it then? I get it that you'd like the pen to be real metal instead of the plastic that it is made from, but it works just fine.

It does work but it just doesn't feel right. I have been drawing for a long time now as my hobby (and for a time, job). I am used to metal pens and pencils or wood. At the very least the plastic stylus of my graphics tablet is much more well built and feels more sturdier of a material than the S-Pen. The S-Pen's plastic just feels cheap compared to other plastics and the weight is too light for my tastes.
So while I still plan on using the S-Pen, just wondering if there was a better third party S-Pen.

S Pen alternatives?

Anyone know of an S Pen alternative that would be larger and easier to handle? Of course it wouldn't fit in the phone, something that would stay on my desk.

I'm gonna guess that those would work exactly like our SPen...since it's Wacom tech.

The Staedtler pencil is sweet. Very long, if you like the way a pencil feels after it's very first sharpening, strength and weight wise, it's great. And it comes with a cap, albeit a delicate one, to protect the tip. It does not have a side button and comes with no replaceable tips, though I suspect the standard ones that come with the phones stylus will fit.
The new spen that comes with A3 and galaxy book is the best imo. No cap, which I don't like. A $70 pen should have something to protect the sensitive tech in the tip.. Like the Surface Pro 4 pen its magnetic and has a clip.
The Wacom Bamboo Smart (Galaxy Note Version) is as good as the Stad pencil or s3 spen. It has a cap and side button.
Last and pictured to the far left is the Wacom Bamboo Stylus Feel for Galaxy Note. It's the oldest and predecessor to the Bamboo Smart. It uses replaceable tips but not like the newer ones used in the pens mentioned above. Though all plastic and the same texture and weight as the Bamboo Smart, it is painted to have some silver accents, and is more attractive imo than Wacom's Bamboo Smart, which is matte black throughout.
I have owned the second variation of Samsung's Spen with eraser (There are 2 models: 1 released after Note 2 and one after Note 8.o and 10.1) I lost it during a recent move. It was good. Used same older style tips as Bamboo Feel and the eraser was handy. Good luck finding one of these for sale.
There is a bluetooth spen (model 5100??) that was released around the same time as note 8.0. Once paired it answers calls, plays music, and so on...
Any wacom emr or penabled stylus will work.
I'm using Bamboo stylus. All features seem to work fine. Got it at Best buy after they ran out of Surface pens with the intent to return if it didn't work. Had it for a few months now. No regrets.
I've bought spen from tab S3. In meeting is better for take notes
why not just get one from ebay?

3 Note8 SPens have broken between my fingers. Is there a sturdier 3rd party option?

idk if I'm the only person whose had this problem. The Note8's Spen is thinner than previous model SPens, and I broke 3 (2 Samsung brand, one AWinner brand) between my fingers during normal use within the first 4 or 5 months of buying my Note 8.
I gave up after the 3rd one, but miss the pen sometimes.
Does anyone know of a sturdier 3rd party offering?
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
thx
I don't see how you can break your S-Pen as I find the S-Pen on the Note 8 to be quite sturdy.
I think that Spens are sufficiently strong and durable, only tip may ware out (after very intensive use) but those can be replaced...
Replacement S-pens will be cheapest option and the only option to fit in the phone.
There are third party - wacom compatible - pens available, e.g. from Bamboo, that will work with your Note 8 and may be stronger.

I tend to disagree. I also own a Steadler Norris Digital. I find it quite fragile, mainly due to it's length. While it may not break during active use, I think it is vulnerable during transport/storage. Also the Steadler Norris lacks a button , which prevents use of functionalities in some apps (like activation of air command). It is a very nice replacement stylus though for specific purposes, I agree to that, but for me only for drawing on my larger Samsung Notebook 9 Pro.
Basically all S-pens are compatible between the Note series, and Samsung also has offered alternatives:
The full size pen for the Note 10.1 may be an option:
https://www.google.nl/url?sa=i&sour...ZXj_qC79Xn&ust=1540924536466923&ictx=3&uact=3
Samsung also has a stylus that holds a Note 1 S-pen, which I also own, and is quite sturdy as well:
https://www.google.nl/url?sa=i&sour...ZXj_qC79Xn&ust=1540924536466923&ictx=3&uact=3
Not sure whether the Samsung pens linked above are easy to buy...

I have that one since long time. I bought it when I owned a Note 2. Works flawlessly with all samsung Notes I have/had (Note 2, Note 4, Note 5, Note 10.1, Note 8, Notebook 9 Pro).
Holds much better than small S-pen from phone. Button is also easier to use. The stylus holder can only accommodate the Note 1 S-Pen - it was included with holder.
Althouth sensitivity of the S-pen has supposedly improved over the note series, when using the holder with enclosed Note 1 S-pen with Note 8 I do not notice the limited pressure sensitivity of that old S-Pen compared to the Note 8's own S-pen.
You may find the holder on ebay or other site...

I don't have pics but they all just broke in half. not much to see
S Pen from Note10+ fits and works, and more S Pen is newer version made from one plastic part instead of two pars on original Note 8, and much harder to break The downside - it's shorter, so to press push button you need to use little finger nail
