backup and restore - Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Questions & Answers

Does the phone support the native Android backup and restore including sms, apps, etc

There are two types of backups available, one by Sony and one by Google. Not sure what you mean by "native Android".
Sony's backup and restore can backup SMS and apps in addition to contacts, call log, home screen settings, system settings, and calendar.
Google's backup includes app data, call logs, system settings, Google calendar, Google contacts, and SMS. The only option is to backup to Google Drive, unlike Sony's where you can choose to backup locally to the SD card, an external USB device, or to Sony's cloud service.
I should mention from past experience that I've had varying degrees of success in restoring from Sony's backup feature. Sometimes it'll hang at 50% indefinitely, sometimes only some options can be restored successfully, other times it works perfectly.
I recommend you use both services unless you have some particular beef with your data being stored on Google's servers.

I've tested both and Googles doesn't ever seem to back up SMS but all the other bits are fine (and restore fine).
Sony's definitely is a bit out of date I think as it has trouble backing up lots of the bits and even fails on app backups sometimes.

All of your contacts are backed up to the Google servers. If you go to your Gmail account on the internet and click contacts, you will see them all. My phone went in for repair and 5 minutes after setting up my phone all of my contacts had downloaded to my phone.

Good info!
I use MyBackupPro from Rerware. It backs Data & Apps to your SD card or to their secure website. You can even schedule auto backups either daily or weekly at a specified time.
Free version for testing if you wish.
Small fee for this app if you like it. I used the free verison 2 hot minutes, fell in love and bought the Pro version.

[Q] Automated Backups and new machines

Hi,
in terms of backups wp8 already has a lot of backup .. skydrive.. whatever automation.
But i am wondering what would happen if i swap my phone due to "damage" for example to minimize the backup work.
On my TP3 i had spb backup that backed everything up for me. it was a joy to swap the phone.
Do i need another programm on wp8 or is everything synced in the cloud with skydrive and microsoft account?

You have to turn on backup from settings. I can vouch that backup works well as my 8X keeps breaking... And takes a long time to be fixed. Screw you HTC!
Back on topic, 4 main things are backed up
1. Text messages (REMEMBER TO TURN IT ON)
2. Apps installed on your phone (App data is NOT backed up)
3. Your accent color (Home screen layout is not backed up)
4. Settings (Except home screen layout as stated)
Everything is automated if you TURN IT ON. It is linked to your MIcrosoft account, and AFAIK does not use skydrive storage.
Did I forget to state to TURN BACKUP ON?
Text messaging backup is off by default. TURN IT ON It's a lifesaver.
is the information about email accounts backed up as well? like fb gmail etc? or do i have to add them in manually again
1 there is no full phone backup, in wp, yet
2 there is no 2

[Q] Moving all apps and data from m7 to m8

I'd like my new m8 to be set up as closely as possible to my old m7, but I'm a little confused about the overlapping restore capabilities between Titanium Backup Pro and Google Play (and assume HTC Sync adds nothing those two don't have)
The m7 is running stock 4.4 and TB Pro. The m8 is running stock 4.4.2 and is fresh out of the box except for being rooted.
My plan is to use TB to restore my user apps and data, and then selectively restore system apps, at a minimum things like SMS, Call History, Clock, because I'm under the impression Google Play won't restore those apps and data. But what does Google Play restore? Contacts? Calendar? Phone settings? Do I need to worry about the TB and GP restores stepping on each other?
Or is 4.4 close enough to 4.4.2 that I can just restore all system apps and data using TB and not worry about it?
Any help is much appreciated!

The combination of HTC backup and ES file explorer (app manager) have served me well
and google takes care of my contact list and paid apps. Dropbox comes in handy as well

Google Play will handle all your contacts if you chose to save them on your google account, if not you can manually save them by going to people then pressing menu and put manage contacts, in there there is a import/export contacts option open that up and put export to phone storage, select phone and put no, then ok, this will output a file called pcsc_pcsc_001.vcf to your phone storage so all you have to do is transfer that to your m8 and put import.
Never restore system applications across different devices as it can cause issues, to transfer sms messages open the messages application and put backup/restore sms and select back up and select ok, it will give you the option to backup sms or backup sms via mail, just select backup sms, you can put in a password or select the box that says do not password protect this backup, you can name it if you'd like, after the backup is complete the file is stored under a folder called sms_backup so all you have to do is transfer it to the m8 under the same location and put restore.
For app data you can go with the titanium backup method or under settings there a backup & reset section, inside there's a back up my data just enable that either select and htc account or google account it tells you what it saves, I've personally never used this method but it seems to be easier than transferring everything manually.
Theres also a get content from another phone under the settings, since your transferring to a m8 just put htc android device and it give you the option for quick transfer or full transfer, full transfer requires you to download an application on on your m8 and link the to devices, the transfer is done via a wifi hotspot that is created on your m7 so charges may apply.
All these options are present on sense 5.5, not sure how all these options stand on any of the sense 6 ports or if all are present and done the same way on sense 5. Good luck transferring and enjoy your m8

best way to backup everything?

so now after my ongoing volume issue all the sudden my persistent ? Google search bar seems to partially disappear if almost totally randomly! f#(+ing annoying!!! I need to factory reset I guess.. I don't use backup to Google so cross that out. WHAT can I use to backup apps contacts pics music pics etc..? I've always had a rooted phone until now HATE IT SCREW VERIZON. THANKS GUYS
I've used Helium to back up app data and text messages. Some programs (such as whatsapp) allow you to manually save a backup to your internal storage as well. You can copy the backup to your PC with AirDroid or many other methods. You can also upload it to google drive or another cloud service.

Question Google Services - My Experience

Hello Everyone. I bought the orange 512gb X70 Pro+ from TradingShenZhen, and overall I am satisfied (but not 100% happy) with the CN Rom phone (BTW if I have the chance to flash it with Funtouch Global OS, I would do (pay) it without hesitation!).
After I set it up for first time (english language, wifi connection, etc) I downloaded all google apps I think are necessary for me (drive, photos, play store, etc) and I logged in with my Google account in all of them, downloaded WhatsApp, banking apps, and others. Everything seemed to work well. Then I saw that the phone was not receiving some notificactions like WhatsApp automatically, so I found a Set Up "Guide" from a website that was in German (I google translated it) and follow the instructions to remove CN apps from the Phone, and after that the phone started to receive WhatsApp notifications even if the app is not open.
Not having the Hey Google feature, Android Auto, the Google search bar in the main screen, not having the ability to clone apps (android default feature). Or setting Google as default (phone, messages, gmail, calendar, calculator, chrome). Manually setting up permissions, notifications, removing CN apps, or changing settings in general... I still can live with it, taking in mind those should be done once per each factory reset only.
My only "problem" so far: going Back to Google (mainly Google Drive Backup), the phone is backing up WhatsApp chats, media files, contacts; BUT the phone is not backing up: Apps, SMS messages, and Device Settings. When I launch Google Drive app, and click on "back up now" it says "couldnĀ“t backup data. Try again later", I have tried the disable screen locks, logging out, loggin back in, force stop, clear cache, rebooting, uninstall and reinstall Google Drive, backup from Google One (it is stuck at "Starting first backup..."), and the problem persists. Fortunately for me, most important data is backing up, because in a worst case scenario (if my phone is completely dead) I could restore Google Backed up data and then download all the apps from Play Store, log in, and set the device settings manually.
I hope this information helps in someway and also if you know another step I could try for the Google Drive backup issue, or if there is a reliable app that can create backup for Apps, SMS, and device settings; I would really appreciate You to let me know.
Have a nice day!

You cannot have "G" futures (Hey Google feature, Android Auto, the Google search bar in the main screen..) as all these apps are not system apps. In Chinese model only Google Play Services are system app, all other apps are installed on request.

You can't have Hey Google, Android Auto and complete backup on the Chinese model. Everything else, including search bar, calendar, contacts, Google phone, Messages...goes, as you can see on attached pictures.
