Eonon GA8163 - Where to start with Roms/Firmware? - Android Auto General

I purchased one of these but it's definitely not with-out issues. I've done some reading and see that someone has installed Malaysk's software on an older model and it fixed several issues including audio quality and speed. It's been years since I've last performed a root, firmware and rom installation.
I *really* don't want to brick this thing... and Malaysk's posts are making me dizzy with the broken english translations.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

If you dig that broken english bro, you should head over to the RU forum hahaha. There is some great info there, but you gotta learn what the Google translate really means.
I was gonna purchase this exact unit for my GF and was wondering if you could tell me the build, version, MTCD XXX, etc info from it, I would really appreciate it! I currently have a MTCD XRC 7.1.2 August 15th in my Audi and was wondering how things compared.
Thanks!

Well, I just ordered it for her so I will know the answers to all of this and MORE, on Wed!

I've this unit for 2 weeks now
I have MTCD_WWW_2.59_1
7.1.2
Had some issues with FM (sound is mute every couple seconds), and Eonon send me an update.
The new firmware did a good job for the FM issues, it's better, but not solved.
The new MTCD version is now WWW_2.62_1
But after the update the unit is not long in standby, max 5 minutes... after that its completely off...
They're investigating it now, hope to hear soon.
They are willing to help, like it.

I actually just bought this couple weeks ago..
After several issues with payments, where they asked for my drivers license to verify my credit card, after already charging my credit card.. After denying them my "life-long" identification, I was forced to complete the transaction through PayPal..
Overall, I have already lost about $10 CAD after the refund.
However, I just received my package yesterday and set up just the head unit. I still yet have to finish the GPS, Dash Cam and Reverse Cam.
So far, the WiFi isn't all that great and the Bluetooth is pretty limited in terms of connecting to things other than a phone.
(Tried with a Bluetooth keyboard, won't work)
FM Radio does sometimes mute randomly for a second or more.
I will keep in touch on this forum and hope we can workout our issues together.
P.S.
I'm a computer science student, so I know my code.. just need more familiarization with this specific android product.

Thanks for the info! I have been having the same FM issue on my MTCD XRC, it must be an issue with the newest version. Do you mind posting the update somewhere so I can take a look at it? I am suppose to get delivery today, looking forward to testing and comparing it to mine.

I cannot post any links because of my new account...
I think the FM problem has something todo with the signal strength. In the little town where I live, we've bad signal, the FM is muting every couple seconds for one second. Last Sunday I was on the highway for 2 hours, without any problems....

I did get it, thanks so much bro! The head unit arrived today for my GF as well, it looks pretty nice, but I have not installed it yet.
I can post the link you sent me if you would like? Or we could post it over on the MTCD forums as well.
Yah the FM issue may be due to signal strength, but I do not understand why it gets muted instead of just getting static.

Would be really nice to get some better software on this machine as Eonon's software is garbage.

I notice this issue when streaming audio with Pandora or Soundcloud. Sometimes it stops after a while. Not sure if it's a software or streaming issue.
One thing to note is if you have the Bose system, there is a 6" or so cable with a black box that needs to be plugged into the main stereo cluster going into the car (since the bose system already has an amp.) The mids & lows are horrible with the Eonon unit... I messed around with it for a couple days before I realized that the Eonon equalizer is just garbage. Install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.desaxedstudios.bassbooster&hl=en and use that equalizer.... But don't bother enabling the bass boosting function. The equalizer is all you need to have near factory bose audio.
The bass boost equalizer app has to be launched every time you re-start the car to fix the audio quality.

Hope to hear more from you. Interesting that I'm not the only person having issues with the audio cutting in and out. Starting to regret this purchase honestly. I might ask Eonon for additional help (which we may never really get) and I plan on doing a detailed video review about the unit and customer service once this journey is over.

Please share a link to your video review in the event you do one. I recently got a 2013 Mazda 3 and this unit seems very interesting (moreso with the prospect of custom ROM support), but there doesn't seem to be much detailed info or reviews online for it. I'm definitely keeping my eye on this thread.

Honestly the quality of this machine isn't that good. It's unreliable and eonon doesn't care.

ok, i've already signed the drivers perition for the kaiser on his forum but there is something that i do not understand. say htc does agre to give us the drivers, wont this be a hardware change or will it be a software on. if hardware thing then how wil they pull back all of the already sold kaisers? if it's a software change, cam' somebody here cook a rom that will get the drivers working? watching vids on the tilt isn't the greatest so can somebody please explain this to me. thanks

Drivers are a set of instructions for the hardware...
In short:
Software
Well to explain it a little bit, the problem on the actual firmware/drivers is, that they aren't optimized enough for the video performance stuff... so they want htc to work on the drivers for that stuff, to use the full capacity of the current internal hardware!
So the hardware it self is good and has the capacity for improvements, but the htc frimware/drivers are not able to use it.
So if HTC works on the driver they can get a lot more power/performance out of the current hardware
Imagine someone selling computer chips without telling anyone how to use them. Chips need to receive a specific set of instructions and provide a specific set of results.
We are not mad that HTC sold us a device that is missing a chip, we are mad that HTC sold us a chip that doesn't fully function. They have sold us an engine without the timing computer and are telling us we should push our cars everywhere.

I'm so over this whole "HTC owes me", and so on... At the end of the day, it plays back videos. Not as well as it could, agreed - But it plays them. This is not the PRIMARY function of the device - please stop comparing it to the cars engine. Keep it in perspective... I'd say this function is more comparable it to say a cars factory stereo system.
HTC didn't sell you a video player, they sold you a phone, that also has HEAPS of other functions, video playback being ONE of them. So many things about the phone are great, but that doesn't seem to matter apparantly.
The Kaiser is a huge improvement in many ways over the Hermes, so I think it's a fantastic product

Well, they can't cook in software drivers that don't exist yet.
Maybe when a product that uses the same chip that also has the proper drivers comes out.
Now I agree with the poster that says it's not a big deal, it is a phone after all. But if we can get it implemented even better. I wouldn't go crazy over it, but there nothing wrong with keeping the manufacturers honest so they give us the best product possible.

Sorry mate, but even when compared with a car stereo the lack of proper drivers is a major issue.
Imagine buying a new BMW E92 as an upgrade from E46, with a Pioneer/Kenwood/Sony/Altec Lansing/Sehnheiser speaker system installed and wired to a... TAPEDECK, which also happens to be out of sync with the cassete and does not have enough power to drive the speakers, at all, and I'm talking about whisper-level volume. Sure, it gets you around and looks bling-y and has a bundled GPS and audio playback is not a primary feature of a car, but for some reason your old E46 and your neighbours Toyota Corolla does a better job at it (not to mention that it runs longer on one gas refill).
You paid a big wad of cash for a device advertised and priced as "ultimate", yet it lacks a feature you got used to having on your previous one and the manufacturer doesnt even have the decency to admit its mistake, dont you think you have every bit of a reason to be mad at them?

I see your point and I don't feel HTC owes me anything. HTC should at least, deliver on what they advertise.
My 1st generation Kaiser aka Tmobile MDA played back video without any stutters. I would expect that a successor device developed two hardware cycles later work better than it's little brother.

And thats quite simply just one small disappointing factor in the device.
Myself, instead of petitioning and whatever other nonsense, put it down to an aspect of the device that wasn't as good this time around. Next device release, I'd look at it to see if I wanted to go down that path again... If it bothered me that much, I'd move on to a different brand and be done with it...

Another disappointing factor is the so-and-so quality of the 3 MP camera. About half of the photos I have shot with my TyTN II have turned out worse than what I got from my old i-mate JASJAM. Auto focus seems to be missing often on landscape shots and has difficulties with infinity:
(Click on image for full size photo.)
Compare the above TyTN II photo with the JASJAM photo I posted here.
Plus that the photo quality looks like 2 MP photos interpolated up to 3 MP size. So I usually keep the camera set to 2 MP :-(
(Apologies for side-tracking the topic of this thread.)
Overall I would say though that I am fairly satisfied but I doubt that my next smartphone will be anything produced by HTC.

Cool, like I say... next time you may decide not buy HTC - thats the price a company can pay if you don't like their product. Doesn't mean that they are obligated to do anything for you now... At the end of the day, their product does what they said it would - even if it's not to the standard of some of these users...
what are the chances that we will get these drivers? high or low? will it be a whole new rom? maybe windows6.1 or just 6? If they're thinking of 6.1 then we probably wont get these drivers till mid next year. photon will almost be out by then. any chances we get them before the end of the year or no?

Did you forget about the crappy camera?

An honest question....

I am still within the grace period with my diamond, meaning that I have a few more days with which to give it back to orange should I not be happy, no questions asked.
I have updated the ROM and Radio. This has made the device's UI a pleasure to use! I appreciate how much the Diamond is capable of despite its miniscule size also - particular its excellent Opera browser and screen resolution combo.
However, there are some faults which it seems are non-rectifiable and could cause me problems in the long-run:
weak battery
poor speaker volume and clarity
So my question is this - all things considered, what would YOU do? Would you stick with the Diamond or go for an alternative like the Samsung Omnia or Blackberry Bold. I ask you all because no-one knows more about the Diamond than the people here.
I can understand this is a subjective issue, but your thoughts and recommendations are most welcome.
Thanks,
S.
In hindsight of all of the problems I have been having and the lack of Windows Mobile support these days, to be honest, I would probably ditch it. It pains me to say this, and I expect I will get flamed for it, but I cannot deal with the bugs and lack of performance anymore.

well all of my grumbles are perfectly legitimate - annoying things that spoil my enjoyment of this otherwise fabulous phone. It doesnt look like these issues are even being acknowledged by HTC too..
The thing that probably annoys me the most is that I never had these issues (A2DP not working, alarm not functioning etc) with my original HTC Touch, which is a vastly inferior phone.

Yeah GPS works fine, but you can catagorically state there is no lag by a few metres?
You can catagorically state that the camera produces sharp clear images with no fuss?
You can catagorically state that A2DP doesnt have any bugs and works flawlessly? Like I said, sure you can listen to music using A2DP, but try recieving a call and going back to the music...
Many many people report these same problems - they are bugs, but people like you deny them and continue to claim that the HTC Diamond runs flawlessly. It doesnt.

Thanks for the responses though!
You've got to be honest with yourself really... what's the most important thing about a phone to you, and can your needs be met with less headache elsewhere?
This was never going to be a phone for everyone, but for me there is nothing else on the market that comes close... why, because I want all the toys in as small a package as possible, if this phone was even a fraction bigger I wouldn't give it a second glance. Indeed, I'd prefer it even smaller, and the diamond is the first phone of the all singing and dancing variety that's finally been made small enough for me to take the plunge. This makes the things about the phone that irritate me rather superfluous... if I can't tweak around it or find a different app, I just live with it or work around it.
Life, along with mobile phones, isn't perfect; compromises have to be made along the way... get your priorities sorted, and one way or another you'll get the answer you require.

Love rooted nook - but hate no bluetooth & mic!

I'm just venting, but I've spent more than my fair share of time screwing with this thing, and in spite of having to play with cooked software, it's great - with two exceptions! This thing would be perfect it had: gps, mic, and bluetooth!
Okay forget the gps but the Mic and Bluetooth would have rocked! Okay, just the mic....man this thing is driving me so crazy! I can't use Skype! I just wish the executives at Barnes and Noble would have been a little more considerate of my needs when they built this thing!!!
I know what you do you want for $250....simple a mic!!! I would have paid $260!!
Merry Christmas!
Heh I agree that the lack of a microphone is troublesome.
I got the nook for the sole purpose to root and tinker with.
I knew what I bought, but still the lack of a mic is the one thing that is nagging me. But to use the nook as an XBMC remote is awesome, so I take comfort in that
Sent from my NOOK Color using XDA App
Instead of venting, why don't you donate to the NC teardown fund? Once a NC has been taken apart piece by piece, we may reveal the ability to activate bluetooth.
Wonder if there's some way to write drivers to share my Android phone's mic/camera with the NC over wifi. I know there's a GPS over Bluetooth driver. Conceptually it should be possible to access devices over Wifi, just a matter of someone writing the software.
i am falling in love with nook color and would buy it right know if it had 3g (gsm) module.
Do you guys think it is possible to have 3g in next version of nook color? i found on net that the chip the nook is running on is capable of 3g module (i think its the same chip the ipad is using), so i am wondering...or if the chip is capable of 3g, i read the donation and teardown forum, will it be possible to have it on this device?
sorry if off topic.. i am new to this forums thanks

There is a pretty thin line between unlocking functionality and stealing. Even if 3G could be unlocked, you'd need credentials from a carrier to use it. None of the carriers are going to allow you to register a hacked device on their network so the only way to get actual 3g would be to steal it...
Even if you happen to have a data plan from the correct company (Verizon, Id guess) you could use to login, carriers charge per device with access. Tethering is sort of a moral grey area, but I don't think this would be... it'd be stealing 3g from Verizon (or whoever).

i see...i was more towards the option of BN making version of nook color with 3g, cause i can see what u ment with just allowing 3g.
thanks for reply, i will wait a bit maybe to see how things evolve...

I saw a post that Bluetooth is coming with the Android 2.2 update in January - which will allow for audio books.
Occip got BT reenabled. Check the Development section for instructions if you're running Froyo.

Can you provide a link to that post? So far what I've heard is that B&N have an update for 2.2 planned but denied that it was being released in January. Also, I don't recall them saying squat about BT.

Yeah, where did you hear this? Sounds like an echo of a rumour of a wish to me.

Careful with the wording... since at this point even Occip would not claim full success... he has verified that it is connected to power and the CPU.
(of course logic leads us to the conclusion that bluetooth will work since the hardware hurdles have been leapt)

Heh I agree that the lack of a microphone is troublesome.
I got the nook for the sole purpose to root and tinker with.
I knew what I bought, but still the lack of a mic is the one thing that is nagging me. But to use the nook as an XBMC remote is awesome, so I take comfort in that

Merry Christmas!

you realise that the nook color was made primarily as an Ebook reader right. there is no need for a mic on an ebook reader. also the nook was made for the public not for root happy techies. if it was built for us it would come with a stock rom ffc and all other android goodness

Can you back that up with something better than "My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris enabling Bluetooth at B&N last night"?
Where did you hear that? Is it credible?

The 2.2 in January came from a retracted story at various sites - it was confirmed to be wrong several times on the forum here. B&N said 2.2 next year sometime...they're still pretty vague about it.
For what it is worth (should be as good as a my brother's girlfriend's mother's cousin's friend) - it was posted on the facebook/NookInColor group from BN. It should be somewhat reliable....

I wouldn't count on anything for the NC. I wish, I rooted mine, but returned...
Calvin,
A couple of thoughts here:
1) The developer program where you've landed here is precisely to support the folks who are building such apps to enhance the user experience on the device
2) There are no plans to just throw open the doors on the device. Don't hold your breath for open access to the Android Market on the device...
Thanks for your interest.

Will the NC ever be able to utilize a "word" type program to write, cut, and paste. This is such a great device and for BN to not forward this device to it's potential capability would be economically stupid. You open this device up it'll blow the ipad to the back shelf.
I have a NC and have till the end of Jan. to return...for me, if there seems to be no forward movement to 2.2 or other apps. I will return mine.
Hopefully you have the same thoughts from NC lovers, BTW it is a GREAT reading device...time to take it to another level!

[APP] CarAudio

Well, i decided to write a CarAudio app! I've been messing with car audio for years and i remember back in the day when i was less experienced (hell even today) that i had to go double check the wiring diagrams, or whip out my volt meter and calculator to get it tuned just right.
This app has almost everything you could want to install car audio, and lets face it. At least once or twice a year you get roped into helping a buddy install a system.
I will be updating the app's faq with any suggestions etc as i think of them or get them by you the users.
Here are the pics.. FREE no ads as always..
Let me know what you guys think..
Download Here:

This looks good. Let me know if you want to best test it out.
That looks pretty impressive man ... im pretty bad with math when it comes to ohm loads and bridging ,etc ..this will come in handy . Not to mention the UI looks fantastic . Do you have other apps out ? I noticed you said "as always" .
Cant wait for this app!
Thanks for the interest guys, the app has been submitted for certification and should be out by friday.
The other app i have on the market is BandWidth.
Wow.. most impressive (FYI: was an IASCA national judge, high-end custom car audio installer back in the day, etc).
To you sir... BRAVO!
wow great work
makes me want to crank up my car audio business again.
And its out!

Version 1.1 already pushed for certification as well!
will it be available in the German marketplace as well?
Thanks
It should be, i did world wide. Unfortunately the local is English though.
Guys, is this app available to you outside of USA?
When checking up on stats i noticed that i was only allowed to view Canada and USA for reviews..
I selected GLOBAL but it might have detected the local?
Someone Please Confirm.
Edit***
Confirmed. Somehow i only made it available to North and South america only!!!!
Ok guys, its out for all REGIONS now, it will start showing up in ~7 hours so tomorrow it should be out everywhere.

[Q] Android auto for tablets?

I'm obviously a newbie, but since I"m using a Nexus 7 (with Autodroid currently) as the head unit for my car, I'm wondering if it's possible to use (or adapt?) Auto, when it comes out, to the Nexus 7? I'm sure it's possible, but what might be involved? Is it practicle?
I have some programming experience, but it's been a long time. Nevertheless, it might be fun to try if it's not too involved.
Thanks to all who contribute to these forums!
I'm pretty sure it comes built in with cars so unless your willing to buy the hardware idk...
I might be wrong though. xx

Check out AutoMate!
Im also running a nexus 7 as my head unit. Came back this forum with the same question..... would android auto be ported to a tablet? Im pretty happy with my my nexus running pure android but you know curiosity killed the cat....
AutoMate? That looks very interesting.
Maybe I don't know where to click, but I don't see much about it other than it's "Android Auto, re-imagined for phones and tablets". It's a horrible search name, since the search noise makes it impossible to search for.
I can't see it on Google Play. I joined the community, but there's no news from anywhere or anyone that I can see about it, only unanswered comments from other people who have joined. What am I missing? Can I download this somewhere?
Thanks!
The g+ community has a small description section explaining what AutoMate is, along with some screen shots. It's currently under development with a target for early April.

Thanks for that. I see it now.
I'll be very interested in how this plays out. Currently I've got my Nexus 7 running pretty well as a head unit, but it could always be better!

I think this will be figured out.
But Google is likely to resist and may not allow apps that help on Google Play.
Who cares, there is a lot of apps available only on xda, it will be one of it !

Everything Is just processing and everything just happens on phone, video is just sent to head car unit and displayed on screen, it's 100% sure that there is a way to baypass this and just use phone screen as head unit screen, that's it

From Google's perspective, to some extent, yes.
But head units can add "external" features, like Pioneer's AM/FM and HD radio.
These "external" features might even be possible to "internalize" to some extent, to avoid the hassles and UI discrepancies that mode buttons bring. (Not positive yet.)
I have noted there is a protocol between phone and head unit. It's not a simple hardware type connection like HDMI/DVI for video for example.
This is an extensible protocol of course, and future possibilities are limitless. I'll write some more of what I've found on the developer mode thread I started.
