Can't get XZ1 Compact into flashboot mode. - Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Questions & Answers

When pressing volume up and plugging in the phone I get "26/025/2017 13:25:15 - INFO - Device connected in fastboot mode", but when doing volume down, all I get in the flashtool program is "26/011/2017 13:11:56 - INFO - Device connected with USB debugging off
26/011/2017 13:11:56 - INFO - For 2011 devices line, be sure you are not in MTP mode", so I can't install any of the ftf files downloaded using flashtool. Does anyone know how to fix this?

1] Flashtool doesn't work with the XZ1c. So stop trying to use it.
- Use newflasher instead.
- Newflasher doesn't use FTF files. It uses the files directly as downloaded by XperiFirm
- READ the newflasher instructions.
2] To put the phone in bootloader mode, you have to:
- Turn it off.
- Hold Vol-
- Plug phone into computer.
- In that order.
3] All of this information is available by searching the XZ1c forums. So I suggest you do a lot more reading before trying to flash your phone, because otherwise you're guaranteed to break something.

Old thread is old but for everyone they have the same issues like me right now it is very important!
FLASHTOOL DOESN'T WORK AT ALL FOR XZ1 COMPACT!
Fun thing this post is the ONLY ONE they mention this AT ALL. To say "You have to do a lot more reading" is wrong because i never heard this before in this clear state. Mostly thje devs or vet are "recommend" one of both.
Like the also very important information that Device decryption IS ON BY DEFAULT NOW and it is written in the code by GOOGLE. So aside to compile your very own ROM there is no easy way to get around these pesky "No write permission for Apps" issues on the Phones SD Card.

What didn't work? According to the Flashtool change log support for the XZ1 compact was added in version 0.9.24.3.

[Q] Help...My phone is totally bricked

I recently flash custom rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2463675 step by step.
after that my phone turn off and won't turn on, i tried on hard reset button, power + vol up key and cannot enter flash mode.
is there any way to solve..please help..
Try flash stock ftf. To enter flashmode you must plug USB cable and press volume down+power. The LED will blink red then green. You're in a boot loop or your phone doesnt even shows anything?

Obviously he can't go to flash mode...
Power button and volume up x3? Should feel the phone vibrate.
When you connect it to your PC, does it stay connected? If so, you can do a reset with PCcompanion.
Flashmode is power button and volume DOWN, not volume up. He may be doing wrong...

Wasn't giving him the commands to Flashmode, just wanted to see after doing that if his phone would reboot. :good:
same here, the phone wouldn't respond to the red hard reset, flash mode, or power + 3x vol up.
Any thoughts?
same as you , thanks monx®。I waist about US$ 130 to change my c6903's motherbroad. This is my first time bricked an android phone , and have to repair hardware. I had try every thing i can do,even open the phone and charge the battery manually. sorry for my pool english,i'm in P.R.C.
thanks for helps and suggestion
i already tried flashmode, fastbootmode, the phone doesn't respond anything and doesn't even charge with wall charger.
Now i have to look for new phone and wait for a solution..
I flashed his rom and it works great. YOU and only YOU did something wrong. You can't blame anyone for your mistakes.
Try to hold power and volume up not like some of you said 3xvolume up. Then it should vibrate 3 times... Then you should try holding down volume down and plugging in a USB cable while holding vol down. It should go into flash mode.
If that doesn't work then try pressing small Square with off writing under the right flap and then try to boot into flash mode the same way with vol down.
If this doesn't work then your phone truly is bricked.
It might have happened because you could flash for example C6903 on a C6943 phone. I think that this is exactly what you did by blindly following the steps without actually reading the entire thread.
Have a good day.
Wysłane z mojego C6903 przy użyciu Tapatalka
Yes it may be, mine was on ihackers v2.0 rom and it's run great.
After that i flashed this rom and it's in boot loop and again i flashed it to stock .534 and rooted with vroot and flash with cwm recovery.
After flashing second time it turn off and never come back.
I don't blame on anyone, I did blame on my self may be i did the wrong steps on flashing.
I doubt the issue is related to monx's ROM, too many others have had 4.3 related issues with symptoms identical to yours for it to be a coincidence. I reckon there is something seriously wrong with the 4.3 release (likely related to battery) which is presenting with these symptoms on some peoples devices. I'd try to get it repaired from Sony before replacing motherboards out of your own pocket. Most likely they are not even gonna check what ROM is on the mainboard since seemingly they are unable to access it themselves, and if they can, then they can repair it and wont charge you $300.
Yeah, going to Sony service center is a must before trying anything related to opening the device and change some parts.
Here in MEA, I asked someone from Sony service center if rooting voids my warranty, he said no. So I asked about unlocking bootloader and he said "Even if you change the OS your warranty won't be void". :silly:
I really doubt that he knows what he's talking about :silly:, but it's good to take it to service center as long as it's still under warranty.

I did all the action, and then the phone completely bricked
I use Android phones for three years, flash ROM for numerous times, and never needed repairs.
Buy this phone it took me a month's salary, now you can understand why I so angry?
My phone does not warranty. I had to spend about $ 130 to replace the motherboard.
If i can go to SONY sale , it might takes me about 2,000 yuan, about $ 300.
I endured the pain, spent a week looking for solutions, but no effect, or even open the phone and re-plug the battery, do not work.
YES! He does not work for me, I did not pay him money, but he produced a ROM without examination BUG carefully,

I searched all similar cases, about LT28 and Google nexus4, or even completely identical performance failures, still can not fix my phone.
Also, I was an electronic product development engineer, I was able to skillfully operate Android phones, know how to update the ROM / Recovery / Kernel / unlock and lock Bootloader, or even modify apk files by myself. After the phone into a brick, I've tried all the known way to repair.
Finally, I open the phone, charging the battery, and then the phone absolutely no response. No flashing red light when charging. At least now you know, open the back cover can not be repaired. Hurry to the maintenance department, there is no other way, at least I think so.

I post this link because I'm still convinced your device isn't bricked. It just changes it's state so Windows doesn't recognize the device well on faulty driver installations and isn't able to detect the Fastboot mode... This is a new approach of facilitating the installation of those drivers...

After flashing the ROM, the phone does not have any reaction, whether you press any key or key combination.
No blue light mode or green light mode, the screen never turns on. Etc.
After the battery is depleted, plug in the charger, the red light will blink once a second.
If you use the IPAD charger to charge, the red light will stay on for about 20 minutes, then turn off.
After plugging the computer will recognize the USB input device.
Flashtool Report: device is connected but not open USB debugging mode.
That's all phenomenon.
After re-plug the charged battery, Windows no longer has any reaction

I understood you perfectly. It was just for your information as Windows ADB installation is quite a headache...
If your phone isn't entering Fastboot there has still to be a possibility to get Sony SUS Recovery working. But the Windows ADB drivers have to tell the proper state and this is not always guaranteed even you think you have the right ones installed as it worked before on other flash attempts. Similar stories happened to Xperias Tablets with the PureDriver STS R5A ADB driver...
Folks having problems with their bricked phone have two possibilities: give it a try or staring at a bricked phone.

It sounds like you killed the battery while flashing, not the phone entirely. It may be possible to either replace the battery or bring it back to life by forcing it to charge. This may also be the same problem @wsdy0001 is having, but he has complicated the matter by trying many things, so I'm not sure.
I don't know the specifications for this battery, so I cannot tell you how to charge it manually.

as I said in the other thread, turn on usb debugging
if you cant do anything and powering on or connecting your phone to computer or charging it just makes the red led blink, it means its hard bricked. you may need to use test point
but if you dont have baseband and your device runs, try to flash a new modem(i dont know if its available for z1 or not)
and as i see you were trying to flash a much old ftf ... after 4.3 , flashing older than them will make the modem not work.so if you can get in to flash mode try to flash a newer frameware

Next time do not be so fast and lazy to read instructions provided by developer of the thing you have flashed. Being fast and thinking wrong and fast sometimes produce fatal thing to the your phone. I am sure you will be no lazy next time and I am sure you will be very careful in operations with your next phone
Whats happening when you press and hold for about 5 secconds power + volumeup button? If you see vibration than you are not in hard brick! If there is no vibration but your phone flashing red all time than its hard brick! If not hard brick you can enter into fastboot mode: disconnect usb cable, press and hold power+volume up until you see vibration, than hold volume up button and in same time connect usb cable. After than you must see blue led! If no blue led than probably try to replace usb drivers by installing sony pc companion, reboot computer after that! Allso make sure comuter device manager detect your phone propertly! After that try again all steps. If this not help and you have red light all time than probably your phone is dead! Hope this help.

I have tried three Sony USB cables.. And If I have to replace the USB port.. Would that be easy or possible for me to do or would I have to take it to a service center? Thanks for reading.. Hope you can help..

It must have been with your computer. I suggest to first try on another computer. If it fails, let us try the "dummy" fix first. Re-flash stock rom (preserving data) through Flashtool. Or have you tried that?

Thankyou for your suggesstion
I tried with couple of other computers and different USB cables. I'm sure the problem is with the Android 4.3 which is disabling the USB during boot process because I can charge the phone after poweroff. It fails to charge when powered ON.
IS there a way to enable USBdevices from Android by taking a terminal session(running commands). I found one thread to just put an entry in /sys/bus/usb/devices/1-1/bConfigurationData to enable USB. I tried this and Permission is denied due to lack of root.
Is there a way to take temporary root without bootloader unlock. Please help

Well let's us do the dummy fix first. That may restore the original functionality of your phone. Follow this guide here:
You'll need Flashtool and a proper drivers installation. Follow these steps
This should be easy to recover. The prerequisites are a stock ROM ftf and Flashtool
Install flashtool
Move the stock ftf into "firmwares" folder within Flashtool's install directory (default C:\Flashtool\firmwares)
Execute the drivers installer located within "drivers" folder inside Flashtool's install directory (default C:\Flashtool\drivers)
Tick "flashmode drivers", "fastboot drivers" and lastly scroll down a little bit, find "Common drivers for Viskan board" and tick that as well. Finish the installation
Open flashtool. Make sure you ran it as an administrator to avoid conflicts.
Hit the lightning icon
Choose flashmode
Choose the firmware you have downloaded
Under the WIPE section, untick DATA if you want to preserve data
Continue. This is ask you to connect your XSP in flashmode. To do so, make sure your phone is turned off completely, hold volume rocker down and connect it to your computer. Once the LED bar lights green, you may release the volume rocker.
Flashing process will run. It is important not to interrupt the process!
Once complete, remove the cable from your phone and turn it on. You have your phone back.

Before flashing my XSP, want to check it.
My phone runs 12.1.A.1.207_China version. Is it possible to downgrade to 12.1.A.1.205_INDIA ?
Please advice.

Just leave them by default. DRM keys are well baked into the TA partition.
By default the given partions are NOT excluded.
I'am afraid that TA partion will get over written if not excluded
Am I right ?

When the flashtool requests to plug the USB cable with vol down, I plugged the cable, GREEN light came. But Windows notification is "USB Device Not Recognised". Flashtool also not sensing the phone. :crying:
I cancelled it manually after there is no activity found in Flashtool for 7min.

Hard Bricked Z3compact

Hi evryone.
I was trying to install cyanogenmod on my phone, but after getting the root acess, when i tried to to install it, it said that there was some kind of problem because the nightly rom i had on my Sd wasnt the right one for my model.
I wanted to place the links for the cyanogenmod rom i downloaded and the tutorial i followed to install it, but since this is my first post, XDA doesnt allow me to place any outside links.
Now whenever i boot my phone it stops on the Sony experia screen and it doens do anything else. No other menus. Just the Sony screen. The only command it receives is the Power and Vol up to turn it down again.
Please, is there any solution? Is my phone 100% bricked? Is there anyway to connect it to the pc and place the Xperia original files/rom manually??
I sent an email to sony even tough i know my warranty is voided. I have had some other problems with their assistence so i dont expect much help.
I just cant afford another selfphone and my mother´ll be super mad if i tell her i bricked it.
Thank you.

This is becoming common
It is only a soft brick DO NOT WORRY - I have also done this, and seems most common with older versions of TWRP
Download flashtool and download a .ftf file from HERE (anyone will do they are all the same)
now open up flashtool and it will tell you to move files from *folder* to *.flashtool folder* also place the .ftf file in the new folder
now click the lightning symbol - flashmode
click the firmware you downloaded
and click flash
now on your device hold down the POWER + VOLUME buttons until the device vibrates 3 times (this will turn it off)
hold the VOLUME DOWN ( & nothing else - make sure the phone is off for this) while holding vol down, plug the phone into the computer. You should see the led turn red then green/blue
flashtool will now see the device in flashmode and flash the firmware (when the firmware has been read by flashtool)

I am now downloading the files. Thank you so much for your help.
I think it is important to mention that I have formatted the internal storage. and wiped the data and user cache. The error message saying it wasnt the right rom appeard after e formatted it. Is this still a soft brick? :/

Yep, from experience I don't think it is actually possible to hard brick the Z3C (I might be wrong)
If the device still reboots when the volume buttons are pressed, your phone is recoverable <--- Soft Brick
If the device is on a black screen and it won't reboot, the phone is not recoverable <--- Hard Brick

I think important and useful steps and tutorials like these should be gathered in a FAQ thread and be sticked. All frequent problems and solutions are all over the place and we need such tutorials an solutions in an easy accesible place.
I think I really hard-bricked my Z3C... flashed a recovery with TWRP, which got a custom theme with extra features (able to flash .img files) made by @z31s1g. Now my device won't reboot nor enter flash mode or fastboot mode - just red LED is blinking when connecting to USB, screen is black (no Sony logo or anything). When trying to boot it vibrates one time, but doesn't do anything...
Any chance to get it working again without sending it to Sony?
Edit:
Sony sent me a new phone, did not have to pay anything, as it seems they couldn't repair it and weren't even able to recognize that my TA was deleted... So got it as a warranty "repair".
What?!?! Ive been reading it all wrong, i can get a new phone for making a problem, as they dont care about their own faults
btw how did you brick it? just curious for developement

Same thing happened to me. I downloaded an older version of flashtool (0.9.18.6) because I couldn't get the newer versions to work and I flashed a stock kitkat rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/general/list-stock-firmwares-d5803-d5833-t2906706 (Specifically the "23.0.A.2.93 - Unbranded - USA (1289-7524)" version - make sure you get the right version for your model). With this process, you don't need to turn your phone on. Just make sure you know how to use flashtool correctly.
That's all I did. Let me know if it doesn't work.

Did it complain about not being able to find drivers for your device? That's what it says when I plug my Z3c in. And I've attempted to install drivers using the drivers tool in flashtool/drivers/.

I created an account to say that this method works. However, using flashtool (using windows 10) can create a small problem because on mine (at least at the start) the drivers would not load. The workout involves going to advanced startup and getting windows to boot without driver signing. I'm sure that you can download something that permanently disables it, also. Using that, I was able to install every driver without a problem. Just be sure to reboot normally or you might run into issues when flashing (I was unable to flash properly until I restarted).

Thanks! This worked! Any idea on how to avoid getting stuck in this loop while rooting the phone?
Hi Guys,
Unfortunately, I think I'm closer to the subject title: HardBricked
My compact Z3 is completely bricked ... due to severe, numerous & disorganized flash.
- No boot at all: backlight but no display.
- No more access to fastboot or TWRP recovery
- FlashTool and its flashmode seem to work: I manage to block / unblock the bootloader,
- But flashing does not work.
I'm under Gnu/Linux, but I'Ve tried with Win7 (drivers Ok) with the same result.
Here is FlashTool log:

Hi
Can someone suggest a way fwd, I have an z3c I was trying to press back into life with an OS new enough for messenger etc.
I was following the instructions from LinageOS 16, got thru unlocking and into fastboot, all going as described until it said sideload the package. When I did this the UI on the phone said the package was for z3c and that my phone was a ".".
Part of the linageos instructions were to wipe parts of memory and cache, which I think is why when I reboot the phone now, it just sticks on the logo, I cannot get back to the fastboot UI either.
Using the flashtool on my PC I can still connect and load the stock fw but it makes no difference.
I did backup a couple of sections, with TWRP, I thought to the sdcard, before I started, but I cannot see them on the card now, could they be hidden?
Or have I done the impossible and really bricked a z3c?
Chris

softbricked z3c

hi!
first off all thank you all for contributing to this forum, you guys really rule!
i have a problem....
as the title say i softbricked my z3 compact trying to flash MM on it.
i forgot to click the "allow unknown sources" on the phone before he procedure
i know, i`m stupid. my bad
but now when i tried to flash even stock kitkat on it the flashtool errors in one moment sayin "for flashtool unknown sources has to be enabled"
going thru the forum i saw a thread about the usb debugging mode
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2778437
he fixed it with using an older version of flashtool, but when i install an older version it asks to connect by pressing the back button not the volume down to enable flashing mode...
so i have 2 questions...
is there a way to flash without having the unknown sources on?
i installed the adb all-in-one but not successful to implement the command using the terminal
how to enable flashmode by using an older version when i dont have a back button? (its not arc s )
1. You don't need unknown sources enabled to flash
2. To flash hold down the volume down button while plugging your phone into the computer

Do you have the the Sony drivers installed?
Did you install the ADB drivers (run the exe in the drivers folder within Flashtool folder). If you have Windows 10 this last step is difficult, you have to restart the machine in safe mode and disable driver signature checking.
You must have your phone turned off completely before you start (power button and volume up till you get three vibrations), leave it unplugged from the PC
Start flashtool and select which ftf you want to use, Exclude TA, press build. wait for the invitation from flashtool to plug your phone in. Then hold the volume down as you insert the usb plug, you can let go as soon as it starts doing something
There is a guide to the flashtool here, beware it's a powerful tool capable of bricking your phone
