Sounds like either you're the dev and trying to get folks to install or you like to install random things trying to get spyware and privacy invasion.

finally a decent scrabble app

just thought i'd share this, it's basically words with friends but strictly for android
its really nice when it works, but the servers have been messing up recently
http://mobiputing.com/2010/08/wordfeud-free-scrabble-or-words-with-friends-clone-for-android/
Seconded, I picked this up a few days ago. Although the servers are a bit troublesome right now, when they get that all sorted out the app itself is very well done, the UI seems quite polished. My only complaint is the ads after each turn can be somewhat intrusive, but otherwise I definitely recommend this to scrabble fans.
first froyo, now this... i officially love my android so much more
this will help me kill plenty of time at work. thanks!
wordwise is another scrabble like game for the android
I have been using word wise (WW) for a while since it has been the only option. A recent update really polished up the UI. I downloaded this and will try it out, I'm hoping it is at least AS good as WW because I don't really like how many permissions WW has access to.
only annoying thing so far are the ads holy crap.
I have been using word wise as well but haven't stopped playing word feud since i got it

Security Apps?

Ok many people on here have their own opinions so let's hear them please, good or not. I have always felt the need to have Kaprasky Mobile Security Pro app installed and I (think) its doing its job or is this just personal self assurance, either way I'd like to know if legitimate security or placebo effect also is it just taking up valuable MB?
Thanks

placebo imo, unless you will be installing apps from sites like haxordfullandroidappz.trojan.ru
I'm running trend micro (full version) as was free with my pc security.
It does block suspect websites, and has other features I find usefull, but like all security, is rarely put into use unless I know I'm doing something risky.
Still, would rather have it and not need it than not have it and need it
I use avast because I install apps indiscriminately & tweak & flash scripts on my ROM. Is like contraception / prophylactic devices, never leave home without it, you don't know who you may meet.

I am using Avast too because of the Anti-Theft mode. In this mode you can find your phone you lost or if it was stolen.
You can also erase your personal data or set it in alarm mode with SMS.
There are some more features and the software is free.
Regards...
I'm using Lookout (paid). Had some good reviews when I was looking for for some av protection. Does backup and has missing device protection. Plus safe browsing setting for base rom browser.
Yeah I just wanted some opinions cuz I was using Kaprasky Pro for 3 months and it has all if what has been mentioned plus Cnet gave it a 4.3 out of 5 for mobile security, I took it off just cuz one guy in a thread I frequent said its a waste of space and its more of a placebo effect even though I saw the protection I just took it off mainly do to the fact that I don't (anymore) install apps from unreliable sources but yet again I do need some space on my phone lol
Thanks All

Can't believe we were anxiously awaiting this..

Android 4.2 doesn't even seem well thought out, let alone designed. Is Google playing the Apple game, tying us into their universe and making us take whatever the deliver?
Do they even care how many apps won't work or have to have multiple purchases to support their multi-user "security"? Should have just left the multi-user thing to 3rd party devs. They fail on this, IMO.

Google doesn't care.. Remember when 4.1.1 broke a bunch of paid apps by sticking them in the asec folder which wasn't mounted at startup? So since it wasn't mounted Android never saw the apps during boot and paid keyboards and widgets disappeared after a reboot. MONTHS went by before it was addressed. Meanwhile developers of those paid apps had angry customers and money lost because of Google
This will be the same song and dance.. Google is getting very sloppy with development and communication with developers pre-release seems to not exist.
I love it.

Stop stereotyping. People are always so quick to hate on Americans. Yes there are bad Americans...but every country has them. Even your country. But I'm not going to go there since I happen to like most people from the UK that I've encountered...it would be unfair to label your entire nation as arrogant, ungrateful, and judgmental because of your behavior.

Anyway thanks for the clean up
But still I agree with the OP. Google is becoming arrogant, sloppy and in its quest to be more user friendly making fiends of the ppl that were with them from version 1.

But what i am seeing mostly is app compatibility Being Broke.. This is something that will be fixed Quickly by most Developers.
Android is and always will be "A WORK IN PROGRESS". My opinion only but if you want bland and safe sell your nexus 7 to me for .50 cents and get a ipad mini.
People who are having issues Please go to the developers web site and let them know your app is not working properly .Give them exact details. You can do the same to google at groups.google.com. Just be Patient
Now my GRIPE The multi user cluster (word here im not typing) as others said was not well though through by google. My guess is they made a date promise and pushed out only part of the Feature.. Typical Google.

I suppose YMMV, but I love 4.2. Smoother than 4.1, and nice features. The only thing that really seems half-assed is the multiuser support.
What is your problem with multi-user? For me and my daughter it is working great - could not be better.
I did add my account to her user ID Play store so she could see the apps we own and install the link.
Performance is good - all our preferences and accounts are separated - and I really can't think of any other features I would want.

I haven't played with multi-user yet, can you add the account just for the play store and not have someone access the gmail account associated with it?
That's my gripe, I want to be able to for ex, have my nephew play with my tablet and all the games etc, but don't want him to access to my gmail etc. I thought this was perfect for that but then read about the app issue. Also, I assume there is no type of limited user, in that a secondary account can still uninstall apps, but at least they can't delete files from the other users home dir.
Yes - my account is just added to my daughter's play store. Open play store and look at add account option.
Works perfectly to give her access to the apps we share.
NO shared Gmail.
Forgot something important:
When you add a second account to play store, you are given a bunch of items you can synch, like contacts.
Uncheck them all!

Stick mount wasn't a feature of 4.1. It was hacked in which is why you had to be rooted and use an app. You'll get USB support again. Multiuser support screwed with the storage. That's all.
New tweaks are a little rough around the edges but will be smoothed out soon enough. Give it time, damn guys. I personally think its no better or worse then 4.1.2. We just have a few new toys now.

Sure, I kinda miss the bells & whistles I had on Codename Android, and I'll definitely check out any forthcoming 4.2 updates, but scrosler's stock, rooted, deodexed ROM is far & away the smoothest, quickest ROM I've used on any Android device. Stock kernel, no tweaks, plain vanilla is for me for now. Way better Google experience. OK, I sideloaded the AOSP browser for Flash, but that's it. Chrome is much more responsive on 4.2 than 4.1.2 - Everything is noticeably quicker - I even detect better wireless response. Your results may vary, but I'm not going back!

Well, I do belive that you are right. I also feared (and expected, to tell the truth) that something EXACTLY like this would happen. I tried NOT to update the system, but why the hell did they keep forcing it when we obvoiusly do not want it? And probably, they must have known that it will broke a lot of things...
Just to explain: for me, there was a message with three buttons: upgrade, more info (which leads to seme text and bigger "upgrade" button and "later", but that "later" means only "ask at next screen unlock" which made the tablet realy hard to use. So, what choice have I had?

i freakin HATE 4.2

Since updating to 4.2, my screen brightness keeps going up and down from moment to moment, things generally run a bit slower, the lock screen is buggy and Quickoffice can no longer save changes to files. Not exactly a forward step.

The majority of people come here for solid technical advice, and some of this discussion hardly inspires confidence. We also need confidence in Google as we have invested in their product and it is perfectly legitimate to raise concerns about the 4.2 update that they pushed to our devices
If you use Bluetooth, for example to tether, then you will have been thrown by the changes to the interface. It was not obvious how to connect, and is actually quite inconsistent in that clicking the device name disconnects which is different to what's needed to connect.
One of the advantages the Nexus has over the Mini is the 16:10 screen great for widescreen movies. It's no surprise then that loss of USB mount (a feature available when many of us decided to buy the Nexus) has hit us hard. Yes there is a paid App which might allow movie streaming but I use the USB to extend storage for the huge game files we must download and so this is a major loss.

Screen brightness is an isolated issue I suspect not caused directly by Android, as most people don't see it.
Everything runs just as fast as 4.1.
Quick Office has a coding problem, not Android.
Stop.
I have only seen 1 real bug in 4.2 and that's the missing December bug.

I actually love 4.2. A little lag here and there, but I owned a Huawei Ascend with like a 500 mHz processor, a Samsung Sidekick 4G with a 1 gHz processor, and a Kindle fire. Seriously Google isn't perfect (but they are damn close) they released an update you don't like, does that mean you should cry and hit the new thread button? No, it means you should just flash 4.1.2 and save server space. Especially when there are 100 other topics exactly as useless as yours. We don't need more of them.

Has nothing to do with Prism, the heuristics on the backlight seems to allow it to ramp up and down faster than it did before. In fact before the N7 seemed to be very stubborn to change levels, now it's a little too fast perhaps.
No matter what version or ROM I'm using I don't use automatic brightness. I use the lowest setting and adjust when I need to.

Hating it and loving it ? - wow these are strong words for an OS. Just like W8 people just can't work out whether its the cool thing to be for it or against it yet even though there's no need to take sides or feel possessive about it - we're all here just users equally dependant upon the working of Google aren't we?
One sure thing though - bugs will iron out but things like the way Bluetooth works now and the loss of USB mount are major hits for those of use dependant on those features for the last 4 months.
USB mounting was never part of 4.1... why are people suggesting it was? You needed root and stickmount or a custom ROM.
Stickmount will update eventually. Stop blaming Google for breaking something they never supported in the first place.

[Q] Nexus 6 owner with quite a lot of questions.

Hi all,
After spending 3 years on the iOS side after departing from my S2 and Sensation XE, I've finally decided to come back to the Green side and see how this works out for me. Naturally, I still have a bad aftertaste of the Samsung phones, and seeing as the Nexus phones now have flagship specs, I might as well go for the Nexus. So I did, and I'm the proud owner of a 64 GB Midnight Blue Nexus 6. However, I've grown quite accustomed to some things on iOS for which I still need help after swapping over to Android, and I hope I won't get shot down immediately for this. Very well then, off to my shot in the dark and list my questions:
1. Battery percentage. I cannot seem to find an option to enable this anywhere in the system. Is this a feature missing from stock Android?
2. Swiping to navigate back and forward doesn't seem to be in the browser. Any way to enable this?
3. Is there a function to avoid popups from showing on top of my screen while playing games? I play a lot of rhythm games and the pop ups mess my rhythm up. I tried the None option, but it still allowed notifications to get through.
4. Is there a way to allow YouTube videos to play in the background? Or even with the screen locked?
5. There seems to be some considerable lag while moving through the UI as well as in games and such. Is this due to the encryption?
Now onto some other kind of questions which most likely will be answered by doing my own research (which I will be doing, but might as well ask them here while I investigate in hopes of finding even quicker answers. As I find out about them, I'll either add in the answers to the questions or remove the questions entirely to avoid people getting annoyed at me.)
6. If encryption is causing the lag in my games as well as UI (Compared to my old i6+), will decrypting the device improve much? If yes, is there a quick and easy way to do so?
7. Has rooting become easier and with less risks of the user F-ing it up?
8. I vaguely remember custom ROMs as well as Kernels, and I've been reading up a bit. Are there any bug free 5.0.2 Roms/Kernels out yet? Specifically looking for performance increases with less battery drain.
9. CMRecovery it was called back in the day I believe. Is this still around to save me from massive F-ups?
10. Is the utility ODIN still required to flash Roms? I remember it as being a terribly counter-intuitive application to use.
11. Is CyanogenMod supporting the Nexus 6 officially? If not, any plans for it?
Well, those are it for now. Don't hate me, please! I will start my research after posting this. Just thought I'd try and hit 2 birds with one rock, cutting down the overall time.

I only seem to have the basic YouTube app provided by Lollipop itself. Is that removable? If so, I'd gladly use one you could provide me. I'm not looking for an amazing list of features, but it would be nice if it adhered to the Material Design as well. But if it doesn't, no big deal either.
If you feel comfortable flash Liquid Smooth ROM and root your phone. It provides the best of all world's for smoothness and features. I've been using LS for a while and its great. You can enable many different styles of battery icons with % inside or outside the batter icon. You can also have the % battery in the icon via an app if you search the play store. You can uninstall the app once its enabled.
Rooting doesn't cause issues, its what you Dow with root that can potentially cause issues. Since this is a Nexus you can easily fix a bootloop should you get one somehow.
AOSP browser has a similar swiping method for the browser but it uses pie controls which in my opinion is better.
YouTube can play in the background, I use this frequently and even with the screen off from what I remember.
