Why don't ES File Explorer / a bunch of other file managers not work properly? - Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Questions & Answers

I can use the internal file manager and I've found one by cm_filemanager that works. But ES just doesn't show any files and a few others I tried seem to work but you just don't see any of your files on the phone.
Anyone know why this happens or have a way to fix it?
Thanks

I think this is because many apps, file explorers in particular, need to be updated to work properly with Oreo (android 8.0) as there have been changes in background process usage, permissions, security etc.
I think I read somewhere a list of file explorers that work 100% with oreo so you may wish to have a google.
Secondly, I would recommend to NOT use ES File Explorer as it is apparently a shady piece of $hit software

ES works at least better for me than Solid Explorer (which seems to have its development stopped), it doesn't obtain write access to the memory card.

There's always Amaze file manager.
Works for me. Though, as with all FM apps now, the first time you perform an action on a file located on the external SD card, you will be prompted to grant access and need to do so by navigating to the root of the external SD card with the built-in file manager and hitting the "select" button.

I don't think it's 8.0 related because I have 8.0 on my pixel and ES File Explorer works perfectly.
I guess I'll just try giving some more FMs a try.
I thought I remembered this being a problem on my old z5 compact, but maybe I'm just making that up.

I use Total Commander [free, ad-free], the UI is not the most user friendly or intuitive, but it gets the job done, has tons of features, and works on this phone.

Lol r u seriously using ES? Dude that is just a garbage app full of spyware.

Totaly agree with @Dany XP
Avoid ES as soon as possible. Here is explorer coming from XDA which great (used since a couple of years) > FX file explorer

MiXplorer is still one of the best file management apps for any Android device. Open source and extensible.

I can recommend x-plore.
Really nice, very powerfull, and no ads!

Root explorer

Just about everyone I've talked to about a good way to explore a rooted phone recommends Root explorer. I was a little put off on that it was not a free application, but I did attempt to buy it, only to end in failure. I can only assume that since I am a United States system ,and the Root Explorer's price is registered in £'s, that there is an issue when purchasing applications with currency other than what is listed. So my question is this:
Is there an American equivalent to the Root Explorer, a way to get around the currency issue, or a free alternative?
there is a root option on ES File Explorer (free app). i have never used it tho, so i can't say if it works at all.
I like Astro File Manager, a free app in the Market. I like it.

astro is nice, but you can't view root system files.
I just SSH in, you can see everything I think.

You can try to use EStrongs File Explorer, there is a root user option in the prefs. I have not had success so far but feel free to give it a try should you feel comfortable with the risk.
It works, give it root access and the check the Mount image as.... and it works as a root explorer with all the functionality.
Just remember to also check the Show hidden files - option.

Thanks to You both I was able to use EStrongs File Explorer to load The Htc fm radio widget and app to my system/app folder. Adb is pretty unreliable for me on Win7 64 bit.
Cheers

Rooted Evo on Sprint Lovers 3.7 1-10-11 update, Estrong's method worked for me. Need to enable Root in settings for Estrong and then choose the "Hiapk" option( CM was the only other option, and I wasn't on that, had no idea what hiapk was but went for it anyway!). Was able to easily copy my personalized widget.txt to the \system\customize folder, reboot, and the widgets that I wanted showed up right away.
Flawless.
try super manager in the market it works for me
ES explorer works very good. It has the option to explore as root but is disabled by default.
Enable the option in ES File Explorer and try it.

In ES Explorer you must set the option to mount the /system partition as writable first. Once done you can do anything there
take a look at androotfile on google code it does the trick for me
http://code.google.com/p/androotfile/updates/list
i would also like to "vote" for super manager.
can't say i like the layout of the file list but it just works.
there is a less popular free alternative called "yaffs explorer" which IMO has an AWESOME file list layout (no huge icons... very slender, great overview) but unfortunately keeps crashing on me. i've only used it for maybe two minutes total and it crashed twice already. and just randomly while i was e.g. changing folders too.
would be nice if others here could try it out and if it doesn't crash on your phone - good for you. but if it does, i hope we'd be able to put a little pressure on the developer to iron out those bugs because i'd LOVE to use this thing as my primary file manager. hell, if it would be stable i'd pay a couple of bucks for it.

Droid Explorer not overwriting

I recently downloaded droid explorer and a loving it. But one problem i have been encountering is that i can copy from my phone to my PC but copying from my PC to the phone on anything but the sd card doesn't work. Also deleting doesn't work either on all but the sd card.
Now i know i could use adb in cmd but droid explorer is so much easier.
I don't think he ever made it change the folders to read/write. I would ask this question in the Droid explorer in the apps and games section.
ok will do. thanks
This is coming, honest. I have been working on a "side project" that is basically ADB for .net. It is a modified port of the original java version of the Android Debug Bridge, for .net. Actually it is the DDMS library.
I am going to start the change over to that library in Droid Explorer, and when I do, it has the stuff built in to it to make a partition RW/RO, and check the current state of the partition. Also, once it is implemented in Droid Explorer, the "Root + busybox" will be dropped, unless you want to do things that would require root. But you will be able to browse and copy from the device and such with out the need for root, or busybox...
If you have any questions, honestly, your best bet is to ask them in the Apps thread. I very rarely visit the Q&A forum.

[Q] Htc Nexus one wifi error

Hi guys:
to start off i need to point out im a total n00b, so i have a nexus one thats rooted with cm7 however the wifi wont turn on and i get error message just saying error.
i have looked around the net and from what i could find was that i probably need to flash my radio but i dont know what that means, i know im supposed to find a radio rom and flash it by putting it into my sd card and entering bootloader and flashing it.
is this the right way to fix my wifi and if so where do i get the proper radio image and is it that simple that all you have to do is just flash it???
if that doesnt work any ideas on what else could be causing the problem??
please help and thanks.
CM ROM's keep getting larger and larger leaving less room in \system. Use a root file explorer and check how much storage you have left in \system. If you have anything less than 1MB, you may need to delete or move some system apps and then reflash.
Radio image is probably not your problem as even though the newer radios (5.08 or 5.12) are preferred, last I heard the older radio's were still compatable with CM as the CM Team removed the radio qualifier from Gingerbread.
I have 1.46 gb so i dont think thats the problem, any other suggestions??
That's impossible because the nexus one has 512MB system partition. Try downloading titanium backup then on the bottom there should be 3 or 4 (depending on if you have app2ext or not) little bars that are somewhat filed the top one should say "system ROM" (no quotes) next to it tell us how much free space that one has left.
yeah sorry about that the internal storage (hoping thats what u want) says available space as 192 mb so it doesnt seem to be the memory.
any other suggestions?????
That's strange are you sure there is none that says "system ROM" because "internal" is the storage for apps and such.
BTW just a correction for what I said before it's not 512mb system partition it's 512 total of all 7 partition just correcting my mix up.
Yeah, you dont have 192MB free in \system. Download root explorer from the market and navigate to the \system folder. It will then tell you how much memory you have in \system.
downloaded titanium backup no such bars at the bottom whatsoever just writing??
Ok on the home page (the one with check for updates problems ? and pro version buttons) if you don't see the bars then look in the writing there should be "root access" somewhere check if it says "OK (busybox <version something>)" next to it.
Or you could also just download root explorer or estrong file manager and check how big the "system" folder is.
root access ok busybox 1.16.2 androidfull from system
hypershell fast =}yes
thats what it says
Ok well I have a later version of busybox so maybe it's that but oh well to save ourselves some trouble just use root explorer or estrong file manager. And check the size of the system folder.
finally got es file manager on the htc, could only manage to see the sd memory where do i go to see the phones system memory im absolutley cluelesss????
You might need to go into the settings and enable a "root mode" or something similar. I know I had to do that with File Expert before I could start doing stuff in the restricted folders.
i downloaded file expert, how do i see how much memory i have in my system folder???
go the the root directory (in no folders) then look through the folders one should say system long press that folder and select properties then you should get size that is how much is used the full size of the partition is 152mb.
i looked in the root directory no folders shown at all, i did a search for system long nothing either???
That means the file explorer your using probably doesn't have root access go to settings and see if you can find anything about root explorer.
If not you'll need to get another file explorer like estrong or root explorer for example
i have estrong doesnt show anything in root directory, installed root explorer but get force closer??
any other ideas
Edit: seems i need one for a rooted phone, will update after i download one for a rooted phone, same thinh wont start and get a force close
With estrong you need to go to settings -> and select root explorer, and root explorer is made for rooted phones.
got root explorer to work, looked in root nothing there????

Cannot access SD-card

Hi together
I just got my new S2 tab 9.7" wifi. I took the SD-card from my S4 phone and put it in the tab. Now it sees how much free space is on the card, it also sees the folders, but no files. I also can't write on the card.
What do I do wrong?
Many tks!

If you are using mm, you need to give the file manager explicit permission to write to the sdcard.
The file manager should ask for this permission.

MM = Marshmallow
Tks
I felt it's a stupid question...
It's strange. Android sees the card in Settings/memory. It also sees that 51 GB of 59 are full. But only sometimes it also sees the files. Sometimes it only sees the folders, and when opening them they seem to be empty. Just no files can be seen. But once it even worked to open Fotos on the SD-card, change something and save it again...
That's really strange, and I have no more idea what I could try else?

Use a different file manager. If you're rooted the best is root explorer.
They also have a free non root version called Explorer or try ES Explorer.

I already did that. The phone is rooted, TWRP on it. Since Total Commander didn't work on the SD card, and also the built in file manager from Samsung I installed ES file explorer. And then it worked. But only for a short time. It's really strange.
Thanks for your help anyhow! I keep on trying and hoping...
Same here, tried several fm, and reformatted my Samsung evo+ 128gb from the tablet and win 7 still having issues.

You won't have any issues with root explorer.
Also MM manages sdcard access on a per app basis. The app must be mm compatible and request access permission.
App permissions can also be enabled/disabled in app manager.

tks ashyx. Yes, I already bought a new Samsung superfast card. This works now. Merry Christmas!
Had the same issue, it was definitively the card. Works perfectly with any file manager after getting a new one. Cheers

[GUIDE/HOW TO] Disable Ads in ES File Explorer

Advertising in itself is not bad but when it gets a bit intrusive and repeated, it can be a big thing for a lot of people.
ES File Explorer is one of the most used file manager in the world. One of the file explorers I use everyday. Except that after a while his advertisements were already a little too generous. The Pro version (paying) bringing almost nothing as an addition, I found a way to block the ads of the free version. So I share with you my method - which some people are already using:laugh:.
Prerequisites:
/Be root
/BusyBox(installed)
/ROM Toolbox Prop)(installed)
Methodology:
Open ROM Toolbox Pro
Grant SuperUser Rights
in Tools, open "App Manager"
Search "ES File Explorer app"
Clicked on app
Swipe to the "ADVANCED" tab
Clicked on "Advanced Freeze"
Now here is the list of activities to disable:
AdActivity
ADUnlockActivity
AudienceNetworkActivity
DialogActivity(New)
DuWebActivity
MoPubBrowser
MraidVideoPlayerActivity(New)
SearchFragmentActivity(New)
WebActivity
AlarmReceiver
DuSearchPackageChangeReceiver
DuAdCacheProvider
MobulaCacheProvider
Restart ES File Explorer and finish intrusive and invasive advertisements.:good:
Rather use it the old version ES File Explorer (3.2.55) from apkmirror with no advertising. Just do not update it! He knows everything he needs. It has the "old" usable interface and no advertising. No need to root, no busybox and others stuff! You're downloading, installing, and all happy

...... Right. Or you buy the app and give the developer his money..... You are kinda ripping off the creator with this method.
Or just get the pro version from Blackmart. No root needed, just download and install.
PS I don't have a credit card so that's the only way for me, if i could i would buy it but i just can't xd

It's still calling for baidoo. Right now blocking it with Netguard or XPrivacy. So you only get rid of visible Ads not of tracking ads at all.

Their advertising has become too intrusive. Far from the idea of killing the developer, it is the same as a blocker of commercials on PC. The paid version was no longer up to date for a long time but I think they have recently updated it.
