Do I really need a screen protector? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Accessories

Hello everyone!
Just bought RN4 Global some days ago and also bought a TPU case and tempered glass before the device was even delivered.
The case is great and I had no issue with it, the tempered glass though produced the known (unluckily not known to me at the time...) halo effect...
So, I decided it looked too ugly (it actually annoyed me A LOT) so I removed it.
Tried to replace it for some softer "sticker" screen protector but I failed over 2 times with dust particles messing it for me and now I'm pissed because of the money I've spent for no reason...
So, my question is:
Do I really need protection for the RN4 Global screen? Should I just keep spending until I get it right?
I bought this device for a budget phone and if I keep spending tenners I just failed... :\
(Let me clear that I never put my device in the same pocket with keys/coins/cards or anything else at all. I still would like to know how scratch-prone it would be with no protection though.)
Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to reply and/or share their experience!

I feel your pain but I'd recommend using a screen protector or your screen will be covered by micro-scratches which personally speaking bother me a lot. In the worst case your screen shatters and you'll have to order a replacement from like China just because you didn't invest in a proper screen protector.

Its always safe to have a screen protector. One small scratch would make a huge difference and if you are ever planning to exchange your phone, that could significantly affect it's resale price.

It's been about 6 months since I bought my phone. Daily use, in and out of pocket. Just a few micro scratches. Doesn't really bother me.

Hi, I am using Redmi note 4 for 7 months without any screen guard. There are no scratches till now. Only thing is that be sure not to slip down your device.

screen protector - good idea or not necessary at all?

simple question that I'm asking myself since I got my n7: should I buy a screen protector or not? I would hate to get scratches on this awesome screen... but maybe the glass is tough enough by itself, like the motorola defy's?
what are your thoughts/experiences?

i got me a invisishield screen protector just because i like to keep my screens looking good and it helps to sell it when all you have to do is take off the protector and the screen looks brand new.
I'm usually pretty anal about screen protectors, but I bought a smart case that covers the screen instead. Unless you use a case also, I'd get one. I'd much rather spend a few bucks on a protector than years regretting it.
A scratch is possible, things happen, so if you're worried then I'd say put one on. I intend to, and have lasted this long, but you just never know. Apart from a dead pixel, a scratched screen is pretty bad. Better safe than sorry, as they say.

it is not so much about the money actually... more about possibly negative effects on screen quality and touch screen experience...
regarding cases... I want to get one anyway... don't want to shove my brand new n7 in my backpack without protection
I don't think a case renders a screen protector obsolete though... there is still the possibility of scratches due to dust particles and stuff while using or cleaning the touch screen....
I always use those anti-glare or anti-finger print screen protector. It defuses the glare and it protect the screen. HOWEVER, you cannot expect 100% clarity on these but I am ok since I use my tablet mainly to read

i usually put screen protectors on all of my electronics. i just like the extra scratch proof protection. i order all of my skins from bestskinsever.com because the prices are good. hope this helps

That said many cases now come with free screen protectors as added 'value'. I've actually bought 3 matt protectors (in a set) and got 6 free gloss ones with the cases I've bought.

Anyone using their device without a screen protector - resaults?

Hello Guys!
I just got my Mi Mix yesteday from wondamobile (2 days shipping to DK, can't believe it!)
Anyway, currently i got a screen protector on my device, but I don't really like it.
I'm wondering if anyone is rocking their beast of a device without one, and hows the resault?
Normally i never use screen protectors on my phones, and they have always been fine - just can't stand the thought about this beauty being scratched
I still have a Z1 without hairline scratches. And that has been going without the pre-glued ASF (Anti shatter film) since day 1. So you should probably not go by me. The scratch test has been referenced countless times which shows it handles itself just as good as any other flagship selling these days. It all depends on you not having sandy pockets. If that is too much maintenance for you, than it is a matter of time.
I also give my babies an oleophobic coating from time to time. Gives no scratch resistance really, but it might help against some hairline scratches. I think some of them occur when people go a long time without cleaning their screen.
I use no protector since I got mine in November, just like with any other phone. Not a slightest scratch.
What I can't stand are ugly, poorly adhered, edge dirt attracting, screen quality limiting screen protectors.
No screen protector on mine, going on 6 weeks now. No hairlines or other scratches.
I do have the OEM leather case as it helps decrease the slipperiness of the Mix.
Cheers
J

Okay, I took mine off, and damn the display looks so much better. Fingers crossed that I won't get any scratches - I never really did on my previously devices, so think I'll be fine.
Anyway, what do you guys think of your devices so far?

Try one of the several liquid sealers available.
Do they work?
It's virtually impossible to prove in real life daily use if it has actually prevented any scraching/etc....
but,it couldn't hurt anything (I've used 'em on several phones w/no ill effects or scratching afterwards).
Haven't applied anything to the Mix just yet & my display looks as new as the day I got it six weeks ago.

I never use any screen protectors and I never had any scratches. Have beeen using the Mi Mix for over a month now and I have also no scratches in the screen.
Very nice to hear the screen holds up!
I peeled mine off, don't regret it
I have used screen protectors very sparsely through the years. Note 4 & 5 without, but Mi Mix I have installed SPs, and recent phone purchases, V20 & Phab 2 Pro I have. Not to be a wet wash-cloth, but I understand the Mix does not have gorilla glass (or other protection), so I am concerned (not to disparage others) about the possibility of a scratch when life's funny little catastrophes occur.
Just doing my job as a wet blanket.
My phone came with a tempered glass screen protector on it. After about two weeks I removed it as it took away from the gorgeous screen.
I later ordered an additional tempered glass screen protector from Amazon but it did not cover the edges of the screen and the edges it did cover appeared to be not sealed in the screen. It was removed within a week.
For the past month I have been rocking the phone with out any screen protection and the following case below and love it. No scratches or drops.

If you haven't bought or used a Mi Mix you probably don't understand how the phone feels in the hand or how fragile it is.
Once you have done one of these two things, then you can better positively comment on your experience.
Until then, your comments are null and void.
The way i see it is like this, case or no case would sometimes depend on phones, but quite often it's down to preference.
Sure, you may put on some extra protected case if the phone is fragile (slippery) like the Mix, but i have seen it sooooo many times people put on extra big case on any phone (iphone, HTC, galaxy...you named it).
Some people just prefer that extra protection and they don't mind the extra weight/bulk the case increase. Some prefer minimal profile case to try keep the phone at it's original style. Some just put on protection back for scratch and slippery protection. And finally some people would rock their phone without protection what so ever no matter what phone they have.
So at the end of the day, you may choose what to use on your phone, and it could change depends on how fragile/scratch resistence the phone is, but deep down, you know you have a preference as long as this isn't your first phone.

I understand. Everyone has their own preference and comfort level. I'm use to snap on rear covers for all of my phones.
I am sure your phone will fair well as you sound like you take care of them.
As far as the screen though. I can't recommend having a tempered glass protection. Just go bare.

Is it really necessary to have a screen protector?

I've had my Note 8 for 9 days now and while I was thinking about buying a screen protector when it arrived, I must admit that I'm quite impressed by the quality of the screen. It just feels so hard to scratch, so much so that one would probably struggle trying to scratch it even on purpose. I don't really see myself scratching it by accident anytime soon, although I must admit I'm this kind of guy who never drops the phone and handles it with extreme care.
I'm just curious to read what you guys think, maybe somebody persuades me to buy a screen protector after all, who knows.
The Gorilla Glass 5 is more shatter-resistant than previous versions and that means it is softer also. I had my Note 7 only a few days before it started picking up micro scratches on the front and back. Your mileage may vary. I'm putting on a Whitestone done and a skin on the back of mine.
I bought a screen protector but am debating putting it on. I may try it and see how it goes
Many of us do fine with no protection. Others report getting scratches no matter how hard they try not to.
I've always put a protector on my previous phones but I'm using my Note 8 without a screen protector. Like you, I'm always very careful with my phone and never drop it. The pocket that I put my phone in only contains my phone; I never put loose change or key in there. My Spigen Slim Armor case protects most of the phone and keeps the screen off the table surface if I do put it face down. With all of the issues people have had with curved tempered glass screen protectors, it just seems like more hassle than it's worth. The only one I'd get is the Whitestone Dome but that costs $60 here. Bit pricey.
I always run a protectors. Better safe then sorry.
I take very good care of my stuff. If a scratch did happen you cant take it back. So there would be no way ti fit it without buying a no front glass or new phone.
With a protector you can simply remove it and put on another one.
Fwiw, 5 days and i have a scratch, no clue where it came from. Have never used screen protectors, but will now

It's def worth it. On my S8 there was a scratch after few days and I am very careful about my phone so really don't know how it happened.
Same here...it is so minor and you cannot even feel it. Babied it too. Also a small one on the back and it had a case day 1. Something tells me it came like that
Going naked for now. Just watch out for sand, fine sand , seems to be the only thing. If it was a flat screen I would have tempered glass on it.

ANY sharp instrument will scratch if the point is pressed in to the display, period. It is MUCH easier to bang on it with a long blade edge and look like you did nothing than the tip of an x-acto knife. That is what those demos do. Resisting attack across a large area is really what you are seeing. Keys are small like that etc...
Finally, a big part of Gorilla Glass is that it also HIDES or better put doesnt show minor damage as much as other glass. In other words, its there you just don't see it.
I bet a screen for this will be $300-$400. How much is a protector that looks good?
Better safe than sorry. Once it's scratched it would bug the hell out of me. It's a £1000 device.
Throw a screen protector on it. In time, micro-scratches will appear on your screen if you dont!
Note FE, had it on the ironing board (and forgot about it). Folded the ironing board and it very gently slid down it onto the floor face down....very gently....resulted in a 7mm scratch.
Not got one on this yet but it does highlight how pathetically weak GG5 is.
I put one on from iq shield...works great with my ringke wave
Since its a huge pain to find a glass protector that fits and doesn't screw up touch sensitivity I just grabbed the $8 Skinomi wet install protector, works great including with the edge display and S-Pen.
I believe the micro-scratches are not the actual "glass" screen itself. It's the oleophobic coating that we see scratched.

But if it still looks like a scratch....
I personally really don't get the mentality of people who put huges cases and screen protectors on their phones. Most people here are obsessive on having 'the latest' and upgrade yearly when new stuff comes out so they can have the nicest, thinnest, prettiest shiny piece of hardware - Then they go wrap it all up in a thick rubber/plastic case and make it look sh*t. Why buy a device with no bezel if you're gonna put a huge thick case bezel around it!
I've had all my smartphones without cases/screen protectors as that's how they're meant to be and to honest I look after my devices. I usually get 2 year contracts on phones and at the end of 2 years, worst case, a few micro scratches on the screen - That's it. Do these guys bubble wrap their cars? It's a phone, it's designed to be used, it'll get the odd small scratch, just enjoy it for what it is IMO.
I have dropped my Pixel XL and the screen protector cracked but the screen was fine. Same on my Nexus 6. Dropped it on it's face from about 5' and the screen protector cracked all over it but the screen remained crack free. I fell that a glass screen protector takes the abuse of a drop. Granted, I've never dropped a phone with a screen protector so not sure if they would have cracked the screen without a protector but to me, It used to be relatively cheap protection. Some of the better protectors are 40+ now so it's not as easy a decision as it used to be for me.

Screen Scratches?

Any one else notice how easily the screen on this phone scratches? I have 3 massive scratches and lots of small ones.
Screen protector is a must. I have not noticed as I wont even touch a phone without at least film on it.
Gorilla glass always has gotten micro scratches so that is my reasoning.
I have not had a screen protector on any or my phones till now this Ive had the phone like 2 weeks it looks worse then phones I have had for years
I've never had a screen protector on a phone, mainly because I suck at putting them on and even a speck of dust or a small air bubble will anger me. This phone, though... I've heard a lot of issues with micro scratches. It seems to scratch very easily. I thought that Gorilla Glass was supposed to be scratch resistant. I had my Note 4 for three years and had one minor scratch the entire time.
I am totally babying this thing. I barely touch it lol. I am really rethinking the screen protector thing.
Everyone is different. Screen protector and case is a must if I don't want damage.
My wife uses phones for at least 12-15 months and most of her stuff look brand new.
House rule, I can't leave carpet without screen protector.
In the note 7 forum, there is the same exact topic, then, it was exacerbated by the faulty jerry rig miscarried test, later it was overly accepted that the screen was not the problem, that people tend to not recognize when the scratches were made, I do not know if that is the case now, with the note 8
I've had my Note8 for a month now with a screen protector on and off of it. No scratches on the screen yet (fingers crossed) and I'm switching between the Alcantera and Plastic Samsung cases. But my girlfriend's phone got super scratched on the back while in a case no idea how it happened there was no debris and the case is TPU. Her screen protector is already showing scratches as well but that's what it's there for.
Composed on Galaxy Note8
No screen protector since release day, all is good on my end. Was the same with my Note 5 for the entire time I had that phone. I guess it's just a personal habit/luck/environment factors that play into it. Sucks that you're having to deal with it. Maybe a screen protector can help hide some of the effects.

Same here. I never use a case or screen protector. My Note8, like all my previous phones, has no scratches whatsoever on the screen; the back is scratch-free as well. I've been using the phone extensively for more than a month.

Yup. Many people report scratch-free unprotected phones, while others report being as careful as they know how but still getting scratches or cracks.
The note 7 and note 8 I believe use gorilla glass 5.
It is more shatter resistant, but seems mote prone to scratches. Corning disputed that stating it was material transfer.
For me, it doesn't matter what you call it if I can't wipe it off.
I started using screen protectors when I bought the Note 2. I didn't want to take a chance in damaging my s-pen then using it and scratching my screen.
I've never used a screen protector until the Note 7 with Gorilla Glass 5. I tried the film protectors and they turn my flagship phone into a K-Mart device. I was going to spend the $$ on the protector shown here.
http://www.mobilezap.com.au/64792-w...galaxy-note-8-full-cover-screen-protector.htm
Before I spent the money on this I thought I'd try a cheap one and make sure I didn't hate having it on there. I ordered one of these cheap protectors from eBay (link below) for $10 and it is actually decent. I don't think there's any reason to get the nicer full adhesive loca glue SP. One thing I like better about the cheap eBay SP is that it is truly full coverage without the notch at the top. Sensitivity is great and not a speck of dust in over 2 weeks.

I've had the Whitestone dome on for a week now and I love it.
I got my original note 8 on October 1st and left the original protector in place, until the Dome came in. After the second day the factory protector started to peel. Once I peeled it off there was as scratch within a day. I started a warranty exchange to get it replaced. The replacement had a bare screen for less than 5 minutes before I installed the Whitestone dome.
I also left the temporary screen protector on until my actual screen protector arrived. It's odd that the Note 7 had a screen protector installed out of the box but the Note 8 didn't.
I pull my pocket out and Flick all that I can off of it in the morning before I put my phone in...seems to work.
So I thought it would never happen to me! Pull my phone out my pocket, check the screen and bam, two nice ugly glaring scratches.
What's going on?? I have babied this thing since I got it, even putting napkins down on any surface before placing the phone down. Pockets had nothing but the phone in.
Very sissapoonted, especially after having to return my 1st note 8 because of insane bezel light bleed!
NEVER have used screen protectors either, as I dont usually keep phones longer than 3-4 months. However, I did notice minor scratching on my S8+, were I never had scratches on any phone before. Going to throw a protector on this as I agree, as mentioned earlier, these screens lately seem to be way more prone to scratching...almost like they are going backwards, shouldnt they be getting less prone??

Ouch. Is there any way to fix or minimize that, besides getting a new screen put on? I'm getting nervous to even touch my phone.

I too had retired my unprotected phones in pristine condition until the S8+, which somehow accumulated several small scratches on the rear glass (but none on the front). But my unprotected Note8 is still scratch-free, front and back, after almost six weeks now.
I've seen speculation that the oleophobic coating may be too thick on some of these phones, and the coating may be what's showing shallow scratches. That sounds plausible, but I don't know how to tell if it's true.
Lol... there is nothing wrong with the Note 8 screen nor the 8/8+. My son has the 8 and no screen protector. And. .has dropped it.. in his pocket all the time..with keys.. and I just checked it yesterday.. Not ONE TINY LITTLE scratch. So.. if there is some scratch.. you/i did it some how. Like so many things in life its ALWAYS someone else.. not just .. I did it. There will always be some that drop the phone get a crack on the screen and then post and blame Samsung. Yet..happens all the time.
I have had this phone since September 7th with not screen protector on it with not one scratch on it. But my phone only goes in one pocket my left pocket always and nothing else goes in that pocket ever. That pocket is for phones only. Now I do have the Nano liquid screen protector on it. So maybe they work really good. Look on YouTube and see the scratch test on this phone. It is the same as any phone with Gorilla glass 5. The glass on this phone is so slick surprised that anything scratches it.

Question Did you remove your preinstalled screen protector?

Really curious. It's next to impossible to get a replacement here in the states. Does it bother you, or have you left it on? Please respond with your logic as well as answering the poll.
Mi 11 series all have similar screen. Considering early release of mi 11, it shouldn't be a big issue. I received a glass protector in 10 days from China.
And why would you remove it? Is bad?
It depends how you use your phone.
If you "baby" it you should be more than fine.
On my mi9 i have removed for the past year or more. I only have one or two very fine scratches and those are from some drops
So yeah, on general use and being a bit careful ( using a case that would prevent the screen to make contact to the surface) you should be perfectly fine.
I personally have the one that came with the phone still on and will remove it when it gets worn out.

Thanks for this tip. I did a quick look up on GSM arena. Screens seem to be identical size and shape. I went ahead and ordered two packs of protectors from Amazon. They'll be here Sunday.
My original protector got caught on the edge of a dog cage in the most unfortunate scenario ever. My phone was okay but the screen protector had a huge gash in it.
I've gone with no protector for about a week. I've collected one tiny scratch that can only be seen with the screen off and the light hitting it just the right way. I've babied this thing so I'm not sure how it happened. Either way Gorilla glass victus hasn't impressed me all that much.
oleophobic coating on this screen protector is iiiiinsane ! I surprised that no one said that yet. But I hate sharp edges on it.... Gestures and that no good together

Curved screens are a flawed design imo
This is what I would classify as a highly breakable device
Between the weight of it and the slab of glass on the back and the wrap around screen your nearly guaranteed a breakage no matter what side it lands on.....
Gorilla glass Victus is junk compared to whatever is on the iPhone 12 pro
In every drop test I've watched the android phone with Victus smashed and the iPhone survived.... although the iPhone has the benefit of being flat
Yeah ditched the screen protector as soon as I got it.
It looks like a peel off screen protector which you get on new devices.
Colors and sharpness improves a bit and the touch is not plastic feel.
I like the screen protector. It feels almost the same like OnePlus7 Pro without a screen protector.
I keep it as long as possible
Hello do you need to remove originally pre installed plastic film protection before putting a newly bought tempered glass ?? Thanks for answering
Hi - I would not use 2 screen protectors at the same time. So if you want to put tempered glass on you should remove the preinstalled one. Otherwise you can get difficulties with the touch screen. I myself removed the preinstalled immediately and installed another (better) on.
Remove it or not eventually it will come off, better get hands on some tempered glass to protect those expensive curvy screen.
i dropped my phone about a week after buying it, was sick to stomach until i realized that the preinstalled screen protector was cracked but not the actual phone. im pretty sure it saved the phone
Many people think that pre-aplied screen protector is a feature therefore, they expect to see a better quality option. In reality, due to strict laws of EU and return policy of retailers such as Amazon, they want phone to be as much refurbishable as possible with given protection . That is why, we get a cheap quality phone case and screen protector that can barely live 4 weeks of legal limit and are really ugly non-characteristic additions. They have to make it looking boring because other case producers have to earn money too. So, my suggestion is change the original screen protector with a liquid self-repair one and buy a sturdy case for your own sake.
I don't see why you would wanna do that unless it breaks or you wanna install a better sturdier screen protector, keep the old one if it doesn't bother you.
